Specialized computational chemistry packages have permanently reshaped the landscape of chemical and materials science by providing tools to support and guide experimental efforts and for the prediction of atomistic and electronic properties. In this regard, electronic structure packages have played a special role by using first-principle-driven methodologies to model complex chemical and materials processes. Over the past few decades, the rapid development of computing technologies and the tremendous increase in computational power have offered a unique chance to study complex transformations using sophisticated and predictive many-body techniques that describe correlated behavior of electrons in molecular and condensed phase systems at different levels of theory. In enabling these simulations, novel parallel algorithms have been able to take advantage of computational resources to address the polynomial scaling of electronic structure methods. In this paper, we briefly review the NWChem computational chemistry suite, including its history, design principles, parallel tools, current capabilities, outreach, and outlook.

Hepatitis B is a well-documented occupation hazard for health care workers, including both laboratory and nursing personnel. Since the development of effective hepatitis B vaccines, the Immunization Practices Advisory Committee (ACIP) has recommended that health care workers receive the vaccine. In this study, 78 laboratory training programs and 83 nursing training programs were surveyed regarding availability and usage of hepatitis B vaccine. The hepatitis B vaccine was made available to students in 81 percent of the laboratory programs and 23 percent of the nursing programs. In those programs making the vaccine available, only 59 percent of the laboratory programs and 5 percent of the nursing programs reported a high (greater than 75 percent) use by students. Concern about cost and payment for the vaccine was the most common reason (80 percent) noted by laboratory schools that did not have hepatitis B vaccination programs for students. Of the nursing schools that did not have vaccine programs, 58 percent had not yet considered a program. At laboratory schools with vaccination programs, who paid for the vaccine (hospital or school versus student) was among the most important determinants for vaccine usage by students. These findings point out that some laboratory schools and many nursing schools have not applied the ACIP recommendations to their own programs. Educational efforts and creative payment plans for the vaccine are needed to increase the availability and use of hepatitis B vaccine among laboratory and nursing students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Catalysis stands as an indispensable cornerstone of modern society, underpinning the production of over 80% of manufactured goods and driving over 90% of industrial chemical processes. As the demand for more efficient and sustainable processes grows, better catalysts are needed. Understanding the working principles of catalysts is key, and over the last 50 years, surface-enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) has become essential. Discovered in 1974, SERS has evolved into a mature and powerful analytical tool, transforming the way in which we detect molecules across disciplines. In catalysis, SERS has enabled insights into dynamic surface phenomena, facilitating the monitoring of the catalyst structure, adsorbate interactions, and reaction kinetics at very high spatial and temporal resolutions. This review explores the achievements as well as the future potential of SERS in the field of catalysis and energy conversion, thereby highlighting its role in advancing these critical areas of research.

Quantum information processing demands efficient quantum light sources (QLS) capable of producing high-fidelity single photons or entangled photon pairs. Single epitaxial quantum dots (QDs) have long been proven to be efficient sources of deterministic single photons; however, their production via molecular-beam epitaxy presents scalability challenges. Conversely, colloidal semiconductor QDs offer scalable solution processing and tunable photoluminescence, but suffer from broader linewidths and unstable emissions. This leads to spectrally inseparable emission from exciton (X) and biexciton (XX) states, complicating the production of single photons and triggered photon pairs. Here, we demonstrate that colloidal semiconductor quantum shells (QSs) achieve significant spectral separation (∼75-80 meV) and long temporal stability of X and XX emissive states, enabling the observation of exciton-biexciton bunching in colloidal QDs. Our low-temperature single-particle measurements show cascaded XX-X emission of single photon pairs for over 200 s, with minimal overlap between X and XX features. The X-XX distinguishability allows for an in-depth theoretical characterization of cross-correlation strength, placing it in perspective with photon pairs of epitaxial counterparts. These findings highlight a strong potential of semiconductor quantum shells for applications in quantum information processing.

We report a strategy to accelerate the synthesis and increase the crystallinity of colloidal crystals (CCs) engineered with DNA. Specifically, by holding the DNA-modified Au particle building blocks above the T m of the DNA bonding elements (i.e., free from the particles), but slightly below the T m of the anticipated CC during the assembly process, crystallinity is increased, and enthalpically favored phases with high degrees of facet registration are observed. We studied the utility of this approach with systems for which the commonly adopted slow-cooling approach yielded primarily amorphous aggregates. In particular, we used it to synthesize high-volume fraction CCs from large (80 nm) anisotropic nanoparticles (cubes and rhombic dodecahedra) with short (<14 nm) DNA designed to restrict the degrees of freedom for the DNA bonds and maintain the anisotropy of the particle building block. Small-angle X-ray scattering and electron microscopy studies show that the crystalline phases synthesized via this method are more thermally stable than their corresponding aggregate phases, likely due to an increased number of DNA-DNA bonds between particles. Crystal size tunability (between 0.5 and 15 μm edge lengths) and epitaxial growth were demonstrated using this strategy by modulating the NaCl concentration in tandem with previously synthesized CC nuclei. Taken together, this isothermal strategy demonstrates how to deliberately crystallize a wide variety of anisotropic colloidal materials and expands the phase space accessible to nanoparticles modified with DNA.

Electrochemical reactivity is known to be dictated by the structure and composition of the electrocatalyst-electrolyte interface. Here, we show that optically generated electric fields at this interface can influence electrochemical reactivity insofar as to completely switch reaction selectivity. We study an electrocatalyst composed of gold-copper alloy nanoparticles known to be active toward the reduction of CO 2 to CO. However, under the action of highly localized electric fields generated by plasmonic excitation of the gold-copper alloy nanoparticles, water splitting becomes favored at the expense of CO 2 reduction. Real-time time-dependent density functional tight binding calculations indicate that optically generated electric fields promote transient-hole-transfer-driven dissociation of the O─H bond of water preferentially over transient-electron-driven dissociation of the C─O bond of CO 2 . Coherent phonon modes supported by plasmonic nanoparticles offer prospective applications in chemical and biological sensing. Whereas the characterization of these phonon modes often requires single-particle measurements, synthetic routes to narrow size distributions of nanoparticles permit ensemble investigations. Recently, the synthesis of highly monodisperse gold tetrahedral nanoparticles with tunable edge lengths and corner sharpnesses has been developed. Herein, we characterize a size series of these nanoparticles in colloidal dispersion via transient absorption spectroscopy to examine their mechanical and plasmonic responses upon photoexcitation. Oscillations of transient absorption signals are observed in the plasmon resonance and correspond to the lowest-order radial breathing modes of the nanoparticles, the frequencies of which are affected by the edge length and truncation of the corners. Homogeneous quality factor values ranging from 24 to 34 are observed for the oscillations that convey potential utility in mass-sensing and plasmon-exciton-coupling photonics schemes. Finite-difference time domain and finite element analysis calculations establish specific optically relevant phonon modes.

Investigations of entangled and classical two-photon absorption have been carried out for six donor (D)-acceptor (A)-donor (D) compounds containing the dithieno pyrrole (DTP) unit as donor and acceptors with systematically varied electronic properties. Comparing ETPA (quantum) and TPA (classical) results reveals that the ETPA cross section decreases with increasing TPA cross section for molecules with highly off-resonant excited states for single-photon excitation. Theory (TDDFT) results are in semiquantitative agreement with this anticorrelated behavior due to the dependence of the ETPA cross section but not TPA on the two-photon excited state lifetime. The largest cross section is found for a DTP derivative that has a single photon excitation energy closest to resonance with half the two-photon excitation energy. These results are important for the possible use of quantum light for low-intensity energy-conversion applications.

The field of molecular scattering is reviewed as it pertains to gas-gas as well as gas-surface chemical reaction dynamics. We emphasize the importance of collaboration of experiment and theory, from which new directions of research are being pursued on increasingly complex problems. We review both experimental and theoretical advances that provide the modern toolbox available to molecular-scattering studies. We distinguish between two classes of work. The first involves simple systems and uses experiment to validate theory so that from the validated theory, one may learn far more than could ever be measured in the laboratory. The second class involves problems of great complexity that would be difficult or impossible to understand without a partnership of experiment and theory. Key topics covered in this review include crossed-beams reactive scattering and scattering at extremely low energies, where quantum effects dominate. They also include scattering from surfaces, reactive scattering and kinetics at surfaces, and scattering work done at liquid surfaces. The review closes with thoughts on future promising directions of research.

Copper(I) bis-diimine complexes have played important roles in light-activated processes that can lead to their potential applications in photocatalysis and chemical sensing. Their metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) excited-state properties are tunable by various structural factors. Dimeric Cu(I) complexes with connecting diimine derivative ligands offer another structural tuning platform for the excited-state properties. Here, we investigate excited-state properties in two covalently connected dimeric Cu(I)'s with varying structural constraints exerted by the number of carbons in the polyethylene bridge ( C0 and C4 ) connecting the two copper(I) diimine moieties. An interesting feature of Cu(I) diimine complexes is their ability to flatten following a photoinduced structural change. Herein, we observe larger structural constraints and more structural rearrangement required upon excitation of the longer bridged complex C4 to achieve a conformation toward a more flattened tetrahedral coordination geometry compared to the shorter bridged C0 . Vibrational wavepacket analysis of these complexes further supports the effect of these structural constraints where we observe a more rapid dephasing of the C0 complex, as opposed to the C4 complex, despite similar normal mode vibrations. The experimental results were supplemented by TDDFT calculations. The studies provide insight into using metal-metal interactions through constraints to tune excited-state dynamics and pathways.

In this study, we investigate second- and third-harmonic generation processes in Au nanorod systems using the real-time time-dependent density functional tight binding method. Our study focuses on the computation of nonlinear signals based on the time dependent dipole response induced by linearly polarized laser pulses interacting with nanoparticles. We systematically explore the influence of various laser parameters, including pump intensity, duration, frequency, and polarization directions, on harmonic generation. We demonstrate all the results using Au nanorod dimer systems arranged in end-to-end configurations, and disrupting the spatial symmetry of regular single nanorod systems is crucial for second-harmonic generation processes. Furthermore, we study the impact of nanorod lengths, which lead to variable plasmon energies, on harmonic generation, and estimates of polarizabilities and hyper-polarizabilities are provided., (© 2024 Author(s). We report on an electron donor-electron acceptor-stable radical (D-A-R • ) molecule in which an electron spin state first prepared on R • is followed by photogeneration of an entangled singlet 1 [D •+ -A •- ] spin pair to produce D •+ -A •- -R • . Since the A •- and R • spins within D •+ -A •- -R • are uncorrelated, spin teleportation from R • to D •+ occurs with a maximal 25% efficiency only for the singlet pair 1 (A •- -R • ) by spin-allowed electron transfer from A •- to R • . However, since 1 [D •+ -A •- ] is sufficiently long-lived, coherent spin mixing involving the unreactive 3 (A •- -R • ) population affects entanglement and teleportation within D •+ -A •- -R • . Pulse electron paramagnetic resonance experiments show a direct correlation between electron spin flip-flops and entanglement loss, providing information for designing molecular materials to serve as nanoscale quantum device interconnects.

Plasma-driven solution electrochemistry (PDSE) uses plasma-generated reactive species to drive redox reactions in solution. Nonthermal, atmospheric pressure plasmas, when irradiating water, produce many redox species. While PDSE is a promising chemical tool, there is limited insight into the mechanisms of the reactions due to the variety of short-lived reagents produced. In this study, we use aniline as a model system for studying redox mechanisms of PDSE. We show that the plasma irradiation of aqueous aniline solutions drives the formation of polyaniline oligomer, which is suppressed under acidic starting conditions. The addition of (2,2,6,6-Tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl)oxyl (TEMPO), a radical scavenger, decreases the formation of oligomer by 80%, and the addition of superoxide dismutase fully hinders oligomerization. These results lead us to conclude that the oligomerization of aniline by plasma irradiation is initiated by superoxide. This discovery provides novel insights into PDSE mechanisms and illustrates a potential method of harnessing superoxide for chemical reactions.

Excited atomic nitrogen atoms play an important role in plasma formation in hypersonic shock-waves, as happens during spacecraft reentry and other high velocity vehicle applications. In this study, we have thoroughly studied collision induced excitation associated with two colliding nitrogen atoms in the N(4S), N(2D), and N(2P) states at collision energies up to 6 eV, using time-independent scattering calculations to determine cross sections and temperature-dependent rate coefficients. The calculations are based on potential curves and couplings determined in earlier multireference configuration interaction calculations with large basis sets, and the results are in good agreement with experiments where comparisons are possible. To properly consider the spin-orbit coupling matrix, we have developed a scaling method for treating transitions between different fine-structure components that only require calculations with two coupled states, and with this, we define accurate degeneracy factors for determining cross sections and rate coefficients that include all states. The results indicate that both spin-orbit and derivative coupling effects can play important roles in collisional excitation and quenching, and that although derivative coupling is always much stronger than spin-orbit, there are many transitions where only spin-orbit can contribute. As part of this, we identify two distinct pathways associated with N(2P) relaxation and one Auger-like mechanism leading to two N(2D) that could be important at high temperatures., (© 2024 Author(s). The interaction between low-temperature plasma and liquid enables highly reactive solution phase chemistry and fast reaction kinetics. In this work, we demonstrate the rapid synthesis of stabilizer-free, spherical and crystalline gold nanoparticles (AuNP). More than 70% of gold ion complex (AuCl - 4 ) conversion is achieved within a droplet residence time in the plasma of ∼10 ms. The average size of the AuNPs increases with an increase in the droplet residence time and the particle synthesis showed a power threshold effect suggesting the applicability of the classical nucleation theory. Leveraging UV-vis absorption and emission spectroscopy, and nanoparticle size distributions obtained from TEM measurements, we showed that the AuCl - 4 conversion exceeded by 250 times the maximum faradaic efficiency. We identified important roles of both short-lived reducing species including solvated electrons and possibly vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photons, and long-lived species, H 2 O 2 , in the reduction of AuCl - 4 . A quantitative investigation was performed by a 1-D reaction-diffusion model which includes transport, plasma-enabled interfacial reduction of AuCl - 4 , classical nucleation, monomer absorption and autocatalytic surface growth enabled by H 2 O 2 . The model shows good agreement with the experimental results. The timescale analysis of the simulation revealed that nucleation is enabled by fast reduction of gold ions, and autocatalytic growth mainly determines the particle size and is responsible for the majority of the ion precursor conversion while also explaining the excessively large faradaic efficiency found experimentally., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Chemical modification is a powerful strategy for tuning the electronic properties of 2D semiconductors. Here we report the electrophilic trifluoromethylation of 2D WSe 2 and MoS 2 under mild conditions using the reagent trifluoromethyl thianthrenium triflate (TTT). Chemical characterization and density functional theory calculations reveal that the trifluoromethyl groups bind covalently to surface chalcogen atoms as well as oxygen substitution sites. Trifluoromethylation induces p-type doping in the underlying 2D material, enabling the modulation of charge transport and optical emission properties in WSe 2 . After five decades of investigation since the 1970s, the nature of photon-induced or electron-induced water dissociation is still largely studied only in the gas phase, with a notable absence of dynamics studies of water clusters and bulk water. We study the problem with density functional theory and the nonadiabatic fewest switches surface hopping technique considering both singlet and triplet excited states to study the dissociation of water clusters leading mainly to OH + H. For clusters of 40 water molecules, the mean dissociation time was found to be <10 fs, and the threshold energy was ∼6 eV. Dissociation is almost exclusively associated with the cluster surface due to the lower energy of surface water excited states relative to the bulk. Recombination plays a major role in vacuum ultraviolet dissociation. O + H 2 is found as a minor product in the dissociation and is mostly produced in "roaming" trajectories.

Elucidating the relationship between metal-ligand interactions and the associated conformational change of the ligand is critical for understanding the separation of lanthanides via ion binding. Here we examine DTPA, a multidentate ligand that binds lanthanides, in its free and metal bound conformations using ultrafast polarization dependent vibrational spectroscopy. The polarization dependent pump-probe spectra were analyzed to extract the isotropic and anisotropic response of DTPA's carbonyl groups in the 1550-1650 cm -1 spectral region. The isotropic response reports on the population relaxation of the carbonyl stretching modes. We find that the isotropic response is influenced by the identity of the metal ion. The anisotropy decay of the carbonyl stretching modes reveals a faster decay in the lanthanide-DTPA complexes than in the free DTPA ligand. We attribute the anisotropy decay to energy transfer among the different carbonyl sites - where the conformational change results in an increased coupling between the carbonyl sites of metal-bound DTPA complexes. DFT calculations and theoretical simulations of energy transfer suggest that the carbonyl sites are more strongly coupled in the metal-bound conformations compared to the free DTPA. The stronger coupling in the metal bound DTPA conformation leads to efficient energy transfer among the different carbonyl sites. Comparing the rate of anisotropy decay across the series of metal bound DTPA complexes we find that the anisotropy is sensitive to the charge density of the central metal ion, and thus can serve as a molecular scale reporter for lanthanide ion binding.

Rare earth elements (REEs), critical to modern industry, are difficult to separate and purify, given their similar physicochemical properties originating from the lanthanide contraction. Here, we systematically study the transport of lanthanide ions (Ln 3+ ) in artificially confined angstrom-scale two-dimensional channels using MoS 2 -based building blocks in an aqueous environment. The results show that the uptake and permeability of Ln 3+ assume a well-defined volcano shape peaked at Sm 3+ . This transport behavior is rooted from the tradeoff between the barrier for dehydration and the strength of interactions of lanthanide ions in the confinement channels, reminiscent of the Sabatier principle. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal that Sm 3+ , with moderate hydration free energy and intermediate affinity for channel interaction, exhibit the smallest dehydration degree, consequently resulting in the highest permeability. Our work not only highlights the distinct mass transport properties under extreme confinement but also demonstrates the potential of dialing confinement dimension and chemistry for greener REEs separation.

Many applications involving plasma-liquid interactions depend on the reactive processes occurring at the plasma-liquid interface. We report on a falling liquid film plasma reactor allowing for in situ optical absorption measurements of the time-dependence of the ferricyanide/ferrocyanide redox reactivity, complemented with ex situ measurement of the decomposition of formate. We found excellent agreement between the measured decomposition percentages and the diffusion-limited decomposition of formate by interfacial plasma-enabled reactions, except at high pH in thin liquid films, indicating the involvement of previously unexplored plasma-induced liquid phase chemistry enabled by long-lived reactive species. We also determined that high pH facilitates a reduction-favoring environment in ferricyanide/ferrocyanide redox solutions. In situ conversion measurements of a 1:1 ferricyanide/ferrocyanide redox mixture exceed the measured ex situ conversion and show that conversion of a 1:1 ferricyanide/ferrocyanide mixture is strongly dependent on film thickness. We identified three dominant processes: reduction faster than ms time scales for film thicknesses >100 µm, •OH-driven oxidation on time scales of <10 ms, and reduction on 15 ms time scales for film thickness <100 µm. We attribute the slow reduction and larger formate decomposition at high pH to HO2- formed from plasma-produced H2O2 enabled by the high pH at the plasma-liquid interface as confirmed experimentally and by computed reaction rates of HO2- with ferricyanide. Emulating angstrom-scale dynamics of the highly selective biological ion channels is a challenging task. Recent work on angstrom-scale artificial channels has expanded our understanding of ion transport and uptake mechanisms under confinement. However, the role of chemical environment in such channels is still not well understood. Here, we report the anomalously enhanced transport and uptake of ions under confined MoS 2 -based channels that are ~five angstroms in size. The ion uptake preference in the MoS 2 -based channels can be changed by the selection of surface functional groups and ion uptake sequence due to the interplay between kinetic and thermodynamic factors that depend on whether the ions are mixed or not prior to uptake. Coupling plasmonic and functional materials provides a promising way to generate multifunctional structures. However, finding plasmonic nanomaterials and elucidating the roles of various geometric and dielectric configurations are tedious. This work describes a combinatorial approach to rapidly exploring and identifying plasmonic heteronanomaterials. Symmetry-broken noble/non-noble metal particle heterojunctions (~100 nanometers) were synthesized on multiwindow silicon chips with silicon nitride membranes. The metal types and the interface locations were controlled to establish a nanoparticle library, where the particle morphology and scattering color can be rapidly screened. By correlating structural data with near- and far-field single-particle spectroscopy data, we found that certain low-energy plasmonic modes could be supported across the heterointerface, while others are localized. Furthermore, we found a series of triangular heteronanoplates stabilized by epitaxial Moiré superlattices, which show strong plasmonic responses despite largely comprising a lossy metal (~70 atomic %). These architectures can become the basis for multifunctional and cost-effective plasmonic devices.

While niobium and tantalum are found together in their mineral ores, their respective applications in technology require chemical separation. Nb/Ta separations are challenging due to the similar reactivities displayed by these metals in the solution phase. Coordination complexes of these metals have been studied in the contexts of catalysis, small-molecule activation, and functional group insertion reactivity; relatively few studies exist directly comparing the properties of isostructural Nb/Ta complexes. Such comparisons advance the development of Nb/Ta separation chemistry through the potential for differential reactivity. Here, we explore fundamental physicochemical properties in extensively characterized Nb/Ta coordination complexes [Na(DME) 3 ][MClamp], (Clamp 6- = tris -(2-(3',5'-di- tert- butyl-2'-oxyphenyl)amidophenyl)amine; M = Nb, Ta) to advance the understanding of the different electronic, optical, and excited-state properties that these metals exhibit in pi-loaded coordination complexes.

This paper describes a nanofabrication procedure that can generate multiscale substrates with quasi-random microregions of nanoparticle arrays having different periodicities and metals. We combine cycles of large-area nanoparticle array fabrication with solvent-assisted wrinkle lithography to mask and etch quasi-random areas of prefabricated nanoparticles to control the fill factors of the arrays. The approach is highly flexible, and parameters, including nanoparticle size and material, array geometry, and fill factor, can be tailored independently. Multimetallic nanoparticle arrays can support surface lattice resonances at fill factors as low as 20% and can function as nanoscale cavities for lasing action with as few as 10% of the nanoparticles in an array. We demonstrated that multimetallic nanoparticle substrates that combine two or three arrays with different periodicities can exhibit lasing responses over visible and near-infrared wavelengths. Our work showcases the robust optical responses of multimetallic and periodic devices for broadband light manipulation.

Low-temperature plasmas in and in contact with liquids have emerged as a catalyst-free approach for the selective, electrode-free, and green synthesis of novel materials. For the synthesis of nanomaterials, short-lived solvated electrons have been proposed to be the critical reducing species, while the role of ultraviolet (UV) photons from plasma is less explored. Here, we demonstrate that UV radiation contributes ∼70% of the integral plasma effect in synthesizing silver (Ag) nanoparticles within a glycerol solution. We suggest that the UV radiation causes C-H bond cleavage of the glycerol molecules, with an experimentally and theoretically determined threshold photon energy of only 5 eV. The photon-induced dissociation leads to the formation of glycerol fragmentation radicals, causing the reduction of Ag + ions to Ag neutrals, enabling nanoparticle formation in the liquid phase.

This paper describes how two-dimensional plasmonic nanoparticle lattices covered with microscale arrays of dielectric patches can show superlattice surface lattice resonances (SLRs). These optical resonances originate from multiscale diffractive coupling that can be controlled by the periodicity and size of the patterned dielectrics. The features in the optical dispersion diagram are similar to those of index-matched microscale arrays of metal nanoparticle lattices, having the same lateral dimensions as the dielectric patches. With an increase in nanoparticle size, superlattice SLRs can also support quadrupole excitations with distinct dispersion diagrams. The tunable optical band structure enabled by patterned dielectrics on plasmonic nanoparticle arrays offers prospects for enhanced nonlinear optics, nanoscale lasing, and engineered parity-time symmetries.

Multiphoton absorption of entangled photons offers ways for obtaining unique information about chemical and biological processes. Measurements with entangled photons may enable sensing biological signatures with high selectivity and at very low light levels to protect against photodamage. In this paper, we present a theoretical and experimental study of the excitation wavelength dependence of the entangled two-photon absorption (ETPA) process in a molecular system, which provides insights into how entanglement affects molecular spectra. We demonstrate that the ETPA excitation spectrum can be different from that of classical TPA as well as that for one-photon resonant absorption (OPA) with photons of doubled frequency. These results are modeled by assuming the ETPA cross-section is governed by a two-photon excited state radiative linewidth rather than by electron-phonon interactions, and this leads to excitation spectra that match the observed results. Further, we find that the two-photon-allowed states with highest TPA and ETPA intensities have high electronic entanglements, with ETPA especially favoring states with the longest radiative lifetimes. These results provide concepts for the development of quantum light-based spectroscopy and microscopy that will lead to much higher efficiency of ETPA sensors and low-intensity detection schemes.

Energy transfer and exciplex emission are not only crucial photophysical processes in many living organisms but also important for the development of smart photonic materials. We report, herein, the rationally designed synthesis and characterization of two highly charged bischromophoric homo[2]catenanes and one cyclophane incorporating a combination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, i.e., anthracene, pyrene, and perylene, which are intrinsically capable of supporting energy transfer and exciplex formation. The possible coconformations of the homo[2]catenanes, on account of their dynamic behavior, have been probed by Density Functional Theory calculations. The unique photophysical properties of these exotic molecules have been explored by steady-state and time-resolved absorption and fluorescence spectroscopies. The tetracationic pyrene-perylene cyclophane system exhibits emission emanating from a highly efficient Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) mechanism which occurs in 48 ps, while the octacationic homo[2]catenane displays a weak exciplex photoluminescence following extremely fast (<0.3 ps) exciplex formation. The in-depth fundamental understanding of these photophysical processes involved in the fluorescence of bischromophoric cyclophanes and homo[2]catenanes paves the way for their use in future bioapplications and photonic devices.

This paper presents a comprehensive study of the theory of entangled two-photon emission/absorption (E2P-EA) between a many-level cascade donor and a many-level acceptor (which could be quantum dots or molecules) using second-order perturbation theory and where the donor-acceptor pair is in a homogeneous but dispersive medium. To understand the mechanism of E2P-EA, we analyze how dipole orientation, radiative lifetime, energy detuning between intermediate states, separation distance, and entanglement time impact the E2P-EA rate. Our study shows that there are quantum interference effects in the E2P-EA rate expression that lead to oscillations in the rate as a function of entanglement time. Furthermore, we find that the E2P-EA rate for a representative system consisting of two quantum dots can be comparable to one-photon emission/absorption (OP-EA) when donor and acceptor are within a few nm. A plasmonic nanolaser architecture that can produce white-light emission is reported. A laser device is designed based on a mixed dye solution used as gain material sandwiched between two aluminum nanoparticle (NP) square lattices of different periodicities. The (±1, 0) and (±1, ±1) band-edge surface lattice resonance (SLR) modes of one NP lattice and the (±1, 0) band-edge mode of the other NP lattice function as nanocavity modes for red, blue, and green lasing respectively. From a single aluminum NP lattice, simultaneous red and blue lasing is realized from a binary dye solution, and the relative intensities of the two colors are controlled by the volume ratio of the dyes. Also, a laser device is constructed by sandwiching dye solutions between two Al NP lattices with different periodicities, which enables red-green and blue-green lasing. With a combination of three dyes as liquid gain, red, green, and blue lasing for a white-light emission profile is realized., (© 2021 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

The effect of the protonation state of glutamic acid on its translocation through cyclic peptide nanotubes (CPNs) was assessed by using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Anionic (GLU-), neutral zwitterionic (GLU0), and cationic (GLU+) forms of glutamic acid were selected as three different protonation states for an analysis of energetics and diffusivity for acid transport across a cyclic decapeptide nanotube. Based on the solubility-diffusion model, permeability coefficients for the three protonation states of the acid were calculated and compared with experimental results for CPN-mediated glutamate transport through CPNs. Potential of mean force (PMF) calculations reveal that, due to the cation-selective nature of the lumen of CPNs, GLU-, so-called glutamate, shows significantly high free energy barriers, while GLU+ displays deep energy wells and GLU0 has mild free energy barriers and wells inside the CPN. The considerable energy barriers for GLU- inside CPNs are mainly attributed to unfavorable interactions with DMPC bilayers and CPNs and are reduced by favorable interactions with channel water molecules through attractive electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding. Unlike the distinct PMF curves, position-dependent diffusion coefficient profiles exhibit comparable frictional behaviors regardless of the charge status of three protonation states due to similar confined environments imposed by the lumen of the CPN. The calculated permeability coefficients for the three protonation states clearly demonstrate that glutamic acid has a strong protonation state dependence for its transport through CPNs, as determined by the energetics rather than the diffusivity of the protonation state. In addition, the permeability coefficients also imply that GLU- is unlikely to pass through a CPN due to the high energy barriers inside the CPN, which is in disagreement with experimental measurements, where a considerable amount of glutamate permeating through the CPN was detected. To resolve the discrepancy between this work and the experimental observations, several possibilities are proposed, including a large concentration gradient of glutamate between the inside and outside of lipid vesicles and bilayers in the experiments, the glutamate activity difference between our MD simulations and experiments, an overestimation of energy barriers due to the artifacts imposed in MD simulations, and/or finally a transformation of the protonation state from GLU- to GLU0 to reduce the energy barriers. Overall, our study demonstrates that the protonation state of glutamic acid has a strong effect on the transport of the acid and suggests a possible protonation state change for glutamate permeating through CPNs.

Supramolecular-covalent hybrid polymers have been shown to be interesting systems to generate robotic functions in soft materials in response to external stimuli. In recent work supramolecular components were found to enhance the speed of reversible bending deformations and locomotion when exposed to light. The role of morphology in the supramolecular phases integrated into these hybrid materials remains unclear. We report here on supramolecular-covalent hybrid materials that incorporate either high-aspect-ratio peptide amphiphile (PA) ribbons and fibers, or low-aspect-ratio spherical peptide amphiphile micelles into photo-active spiropyran polymeric matrices. We found that the high-aspect-ratio morphologies not only play a significant role in providing mechanical reinforcement to the matrix but also enhance photo-actuation for both light driven volumetric contraction and expansion of spiropyran hydrogels. Molecular dynamics simulations indicate that water within the high-aspect-ratio supramolecular polymers exhibits a faster draining rate as compared to those in spherical micelles, which suggests that the high-aspect-ratio supramolecular polymers effectively facilitate the transport of trapped water molecules by functioning as channels and therefore enhancing actuation of the hybrid system. Superposing two or more periodic structures to form moiré patterns is emerging as a promising platform to confine and manipulate light. However, moiré-facilitated interactions and phenomena have been constrained to the vicinity of moiré lattices. Here we report on the observation of ultralong-range coupling between photonic lattices in bilayer and multilayer moiré architectures mediated by dark surface lattice resonances in the vertical direction. We show that two-dimensional plasmonic nanoparticle lattices enable twist-angle-controlled directional lasing emission, even when the lattices are spatially separated by distances exceeding three orders of magnitude of lattice periodicity. Our discovery of far-field interlattice coupling opens the possibility of using the out-of-plane dimension for optical manipulation on the nanoscale and microscale., (© 2023. Two-dimensional (2D) materials have attracted attention for quantum information science due to their ability to host single-photon emitters (SPEs). Although the properties of atomically thin materials are highly sensitive to surface modification, chemical functionalization remains unexplored in the design and control of 2D material SPEs. Here, we report a chemomechanical approach to modify SPEs in monolayer WSe 2 through the synergistic combination of localized mechanical strain and noncovalent surface functionalization with aryl diazonium chemistry. Following the deposition of an aryl oligomer adlayer, the spectrally complex defect-related emission of strained monolayer WSe 2 is simplified into spectrally isolated SPEs with high single-photon purity. Density functional theory calculations reveal energetic alignment between WSe 2 defect states and adsorbed aryl oligomer energy levels, thus providing insight into the observed chemomechanically modified quantum emission. Motivated by recent advances in the development of single photon emitters for quantum information sciences, here we design and formulate a quantum cascade model that describes cascade emission by a quantum dot (QD) in a cavity structure while preserving entanglement that stores information needed for single photon emission. The theoretical approach is based on a photonic structure that consists of two orthogonal cavities in which resonance with either the first or second of the two emitted photons is possible, leading to amplification and rerouting of the entangled light. The cavity-QD scheme uses a four-level cascade emitter that involves three levels for each polarization, leading to two spatially entangled photons for each polarization. By solving the Schrodinger equation, we identify the characteristic properties of the system, which can be used in conjunction with optimization techniques to achieve the "best" design relative to a set of prioritized criteria or constraints in our optical system. The theoretical investigations include an analysis of emission spectra in addition to the joint spectral density profile, and the results demonstrate the ability of the cavities to act as frequency filters for the photons that make up the entanglements and to modify entanglement properties. The results provide new opportunities for the experimental design and engineering of on-demand single photon sources.

Dissociative electron attachment (DEA) reactions of water result in the production of hydrogen atoms and hydroxide anions. This has been studied for a long time and is relatively slow in liquid water for thermalized hydrated electrons but much faster with a higher-energy electron. Here, we probe the nonadiabatic molecular dynamics after the addition of a hot electron (6-7 eV) to a neutral water cluster (H 2 O) n , where n = 2-12, considering the 0-100 fs time scale using the fewest switches surface hopping method, in conjunction with ab initio molecular dynamics and the Tamm-Dancoff approximation density functional theory method. The nonadiabatic DEA occurs within 10-60 fs, and with high probability, giving H + OH - above an energy threshold. This is faster than time scales estimated previously for autoionization or adiabatic DEA. The change in threshold energy with cluster size is modest, ranging from 6.6 to 6.9 eV. Dissociation on a femtosecond time scale is consistent with pulsed radiolysis experiments.

We report a copolymeric fluorescent sensor that is selective for lithium chloride. The two constituent polymers comprise pendent triphenylethylene (TPE) moieties for aggregate induced emission (AIE) along with either strapped-calix[4]pyrrole or secondary ammonium groups that drive aggregation via self-assembly upon polymer mixing. Addition of LiCl in acetonitrile disrupts the strapped-calix[4]pyrrole/secondary ammonium chloride salt host-guest crosslinks leading to disaggregation of the polymer chains and a decrease in TPE emission. The lack of AIE perturbation upon addition of NaCl, KCl, MgCl 2 or CaCl 2 provides for high selectivity for LiCl relative to potential interferants. Developing an eco-friendly, efficient, and highly selective gold-recovery technology is urgently needed in order to maintain sustainable environments and improve the utilization of resources. Here we report an additive-induced gold recovery paradigm based on precisely controlling the reciprocal transformation and instantaneous assembly of the second-sphere coordinated adducts formed between β-cyclodextrin and tetrabromoaurate anions. The additives initiate a rapid assembly process by co-occupying the binding cavity of β-cyclodextrin along with the tetrabromoaurate anions, leading to the formation of supramolecular polymers that precipitate from aqueous solutions as cocrystals. The efficiency of gold recovery reaches 99.8% when dibutyl carbitol is deployed as the additive. This cocrystallization is highly selective for square-planar tetrabromoaurate anions. In a laboratory-scale gold-recovery protocol, over 94% of gold in electronic waste was recovered at gold concentrations as low as 9.3 ppm. This simple protocol constitutes a promising paradigm for the sustainable recovery of gold, featuring reduced energy consumption, low cost inputs, and the avoidance of environmental pollution., (© 2023. Cocrystal engineering, involving the assembly of two or more components into a highly ordered solid-state superstructure, has emerged as a popular strategy for tuning the photophysical properties of crystalline materials. The reversible co-assembly and disassembly of multicomponent cocrystals and their reciprocal transformation in the solid state remain challenging objectives. Herein, we report a color-tunable upconversion-emission switch based on the interconversion between two cocrystals. One red- and one yellow-emissive cocrystal, composed of an electron-deficient naphthalenediimide-based triangular macrocycle and different electron donors, have been obtained. The red- and yellow-emissive cocrystals undergo reversible transformations on exchanging the electron donors. Benefiting from intermolecular charge transfer interactions, the two cocrystals display superior two-photon excited upconversion emission. Accompanying the interconversion of the two cocrystals, their luminescent color changes between red and yellow, forming a dual-color upconversion-emission switch. This research provides a rare yet critical example involving precise control of cocrystal-to-cocrystal transformation and affords a reference for fabricating color-tunable nonlinear optical materials in the solid state.

The ability to gradually modify the atomic structures of nanomaterials and directly identify such structural variation is important in nanoscience research. Here, we present the first example of a high-pressure single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of atomically precise metal nanoclusters. The pressure-dependent, subangstrom structural evolution of an ultrasmall gold nanoparticle, Au 25 S 18 , has been directly identified. We found that a 0.1 Å decrease of the Au-Au bond length could induce a blue-shift of 30 nm in the photoluminescence spectra of gold nanoclusters. From theoretical calculations, the origins of the blue-shift and enhanced photoluminescence under pressure are investigated, which are ascribed to molecular orbital symmetry and conformational locking, respectively. The combination of the high-pressure in situ X-ray results with both theoretical and experimental optical spectra provides a direct and generalizable avenue to unveil the underlying structure-property relations for nanoclusters and nanoparticles which cannot be obtained through traditional physical chemistry measurements.

Next-generation structural materials are expected to be lightweight, high-strength and tough composites with embedded functionalities to sense, adapt, self-repair, morph and restore. This Review highlights recent developments and concepts in bioinspired nanocomposites, emphasizing tailoring of the architecture, interphases and confinement to achieve dynamic and synergetic responses. We highlight cornerstone examples from natural materials with unique mechanical property combinations based on relatively simple building blocks produced in aqueous environments under ambient conditions. A particular focus is on structural hierarchies across multiple length scales to achieve multifunctionality and robustness. We further discuss recent advances, trends and emerging opportunities for combining biological and synthetic components, state-of-the-art characterization and modelling approaches to assess the physical principles underlying nature-inspired design and mechanical responses at multiple length scales. These multidisciplinary approaches promote the synergetic enhancement of individual materials properties and an improved predictive and prescriptive design of the next era of structural materials at multilength scales for a wide range of applications., (© 2022.
