Search

Computation, if treated as a set of physical processes that act on information represented by states of matter, encompasses biological systems, digital systems, and other constructs, and may be a fundamental measure of living systems. The opportunity for biological computation, represented in the propagation and selection-driven evolution of information-carrying organic molecular structures, has been partially characterized in terms of planetary habitable zones based on primary conditions such as temperature and the presence of liquid water. A generalization of this concept to computational zones is proposed, with constraints set by three principal characteristics: capacity (including computation rates), energy, and instantiation (or substrate, including spatial extent). Computational zones naturally combine traditional habitability factors, including those associated with biological function that incorporate the chemical milieu, constraints on nutrients and free energy, as well as element availability. Two example applications are presented by examining the fundamental thermodynamic work efficiency and Landauer limit of photon-driven biological computation on planetary surfaces and of generalized computation in stellar energy capture structures (a.k.a. Dyson structures). It is suggested that computational zones involving nested structures or substellar objects could manifest unique observational signatures as cool far-infrared emitters. First contact with another civilization, or simply another intelligence of some kind, will likely be quite different depending on whether that intelligence is more or less advanced than ourselves. If we assume that the lifetime distribution of intelligences follows an approximately exponential distribution, one might naively assume that the pile-up of short-lived entities dominates any detection or contact scenario. However, it is argued here that the probability of contact is proportional to the age of said intelligence (or possibly stronger), which introduces a selection effect. We demonstrate that detected intelligences will have a mean age twice that of the underlying (detected + undetected) population, using the exponential model. We find that our first contact will most likely be with an older intelligence, provided that the maximum allowed mean lifetime of the intelligence population, $\tau_{\rm max}$, is $>e$ times larger than our own. Older intelligences may be rare but they disproportionality contribute to first contacts, introducing what we call a 'contact inequality', analogous to wealth inequality. The circumstellar habitable zone and its various refinements serves as a useful entry point for discussing the potential for a planet to generate and sustain life. But little attention is paid to the quality of available energy in the form of stellar photons for phototrophic (e.g. photosynthetic) life. This short paper discusses the application of the concept of exergy to exoplanetary environments and the evaluation of the maximum efficiency of energy use, or maximum work obtainable from electromagnetic radiation. Hotter stars provide temperate planets with higher maximum obtainable work with higher efficiency than cool stars, and cool planets provide higher efficiency of radiation conversion from the same stellar photons than do hot planets. These statements are independent of the details of any photochemical and biochemical mechanisms and could produce systematic differences in planetary habitability, especially at the extremes of maximal or minimal biospheres, or at critical ecological tipping points. We model the settlement of the galaxy by space-faring civilizations in order to address issues related to the Fermi Paradox. We explore the problem in a way that avoids assumptions about the intent and motivation of any exo-civilization seeking to settle other planetary systems. We first consider the speed of an advancing settlement via probes of finite velocity and range to determine if the galaxy can become inhabited with space-faring civilizations on timescales shorter than its age. We also include the effect of stellar motions on the long term behavior of the settlement front which adds a diffusive component to its advance. The results of these models demonstrate that the Milky Way can be readily 'filled-in' with settled stellar systems under conservative assumptions about interstellar spacecraft velocities and launch rates. We then consider the question of the galactic steady-state achieved in terms of the fraction of settled planets. We do this by considering the effect of finite settlement civilization lifetimes on the steady states. We find a range of parameters for which the galaxy supports a population of interstellar space-faring civilizations even though some settleable systems are uninhabited. Both results point to ways in which Earth might remain unvisited in the midst of an inhabited galaxy. Finally we consider how our results can be combined with the finite horizon for evidence of previous settlements in Earth's geologic record. Our steady-state model can constrain the probabilities for an Earth visit by a settling civilization before a given time horizon. These results break the link between Hart's famous "Fact A" (no interstellar visitors on Earth now) and the conclusion that humans must, therefore, be the only technological civilization in the galaxy.

Planetary rotation rate has a significant effect on atmospheric circulation, where the strength of the Coriolis effect in part determines the efficiency of latitudinal heat transport, altering cloud distributions, surface temperatures, and precipitation patterns. In this study we use the ROCKE-3D dynamic-ocean general circulation model to study the effects of slow rotations and increased insolations on the 'fractional habitability' and silicate weathering rate of an Earth-like world. Defining the fractional habitability f_h to be the percentage of a planet's surface which falls in the 0 <= T <= 100 C temperature regime, we find a moderate increase in f_h with a 10% and 20% increase in insolation and a possible maximum in f_h at sidereal day-lengths between 8 and 32 times that of the modern Earth. By tracking precipitation and run-off we further determine that there is a rotational regime centered on a 4-day period in which the silicate weathering rate is maximized and is particularly strongly peaked at higher overall insolations. Because of weathering's integral role in the long-term carbonate-silicate cycle, we suggest that climate stability may be strongly affected by the anticipated rotational evolution of temperate terrestrial-type worlds, and should be considered a major factor in their study. This whitepaper discusses the diversity of exoplanets that could be detected by future observations, so that comparative exoplanetology can be performed in the upcoming era of large space-based flagship missions. The primary focus will be on characterizing Earth-like worlds around Sun-like stars. However, we will also be able to characterize companion planets in the system simultaneously. This will not only provide a contextual picture with regards to our Solar system, but also presents a unique opportunity to observe size dependent planetary atmospheres at different orbital distances. It has been established theoretically that atmospheric thermal tides on rocky planets can lead to significant modifications of rotational evolution, both close to synchronous rotation and at faster rotations if certain resonant conditions are met. Here it is demonstrated that the normally considered dissipative gravitational tidal evolution of rocky planet rotation could, in principle, be 'stalled' by thermal tide resonances for Earth-analog worlds in the liquid water orbital zone of stars more massive than ~0.3 Msolar. The possibility of feedback effects between a planetary biosphere and the planetary rotational evolution are examined. A simple, heuristic formula with parallels to the Drake Equation is introduced to help focus discussion on open questions for the origins of life in a planetary context. This approach indicates a number of areas where quantitative progress can be made on parameter estimation for determining origins of life probabilities. We also suggest that the probability of origin of life events can be dramatically increased on planets with parallel chemistries that can undergo the development of complexity, and in solar systems where more than one planet is available for chemical evolution, and where efficient impact ejecta exchange occurs, increasing the effective chemical search space and available time., Comment: 13 pages, submitted to Science

A small percentage of normal stars harbor giant planets that orbit within a few tenths of an astronomical unit. At such distances the potential exists for significant tidal and magnetic field interaction resulting in energy dissipation that may manifest as changes within the stellar corona. We examine the X-ray emission of stars hosting planets and find a positive correlation between X-ray luminosity and the projected mass of the most closely orbiting exoplanets. We investigate possible systematics and observational biases that could mimic or confuse this correlation but find no strong evidence for any, especially for planets more massive than ~0.1 MJ. Luminosities and upper limits are consistent with the interpretation that there is a lower floor to stellar X-ray emission dependent on close-in planetary mass. Under the hypothesis that this is a consequence of planet-star magnetic field interaction, and energy dissipation, we estimate a possible field strength increase between planets of 1 and 10 MJ of a factor ~8. Intriguingly, this is consistent with recent geodynamo scaling law predictions. In the outer regions of the habitable zone, the risk of transitioning into a globally frozen "snowball" state poses a threat to the habitability of planets with the capacity to host water-based life. We use a one-dimensional energy balance climate model (EBM) to examine how obliquity, spin rate, orbital eccentricity, and ocean coverage might influence the onset of such a snowball state. For an exoplanet, these parameters may be strikingly different from the values observed for Earth. Since, for constant semimajor axis, the annual mean stellar irradiation scales with (1-e^2)^(-1/2), one might expect the greatest habitable semimajor axis (for fixed atmospheric composition) to scale as (1-e^2)^(-1/4). We find that this standard ansatz provides a reasonable lower bound on the outer boundary of the habitable zone, but the influence of obliquity and ocean fraction can be profound in the context of planets on eccentric orbits. For planets with eccentricity 0.5, our EBM suggests that the greatest habitable semimajor axis can vary by more than 0.8 AU (78%!) depending on obliquity, with higher obliquity worlds generally more stable against snowball transitions. One might also expect that the long winter at an eccentric planet's apoastron would render it more susceptible to global freezing. Our models suggest that this is not a significant risk for Earth-like planets around Sun-like stars since such planets are buffered by the thermal inertia provided by oceans covering at least 10% of their surface. Since planets on eccentric orbits spend much of their year particularly far from the star, such worlds might turn out to be especially good targets for direct observations with missions such as TPF-Darwin. Although the Earth's orbit is never far from circular, terrestrial planets around other stars might experience substantial changes in eccentricity that could lead to climate changes, including possible "phase transitions" such as the snowball transition (or its opposite). There is evidence that Earth has gone through at least one globally frozen, "snowball" state in the last billion years, which it is thought to have exited after several million years because global ice-cover shut off the carbonate-silicate cycle, thereby allowing greenhouse gases to build up to sufficient concentration to melt the ice. Due to the positive feedback caused by the high albedo of snow and ice, susceptibility to falling into snowball states might be a generic feature of water-rich planets with the capacity to host life. This paper has two main thrusts. First, we revisit one-dimensional energy balance climate models as tools for probing possible climates of exoplanets, investigate the dimensional scaling of such models, and introduce a simple algorithm to treat the melting of the ice layer on a globally-frozen planet. We show that if a terrestrial planet undergoes Milankovitch-like oscillations of eccentricity that are of great enough magnitude, it could melt out of a snowball state. Second, we examine the kinds of variations of eccentricity that a terrestrial planet might experience due to the gravitational influence of a giant companion. We show that a giant planet on a sufficiently eccentric orbit can excite extreme eccentricity oscillations in the orbit of a habitable terrestrial planet. Terrestrial exoplanets are on the verge of joining the ranks of astronomically accessible objects. Interpreting their observable characteristics, and informing decisions on instrument design and use, will hinge on the ability to model these planets successfully across a vast range of configurations and climate forcings. A hierarchical approach that addresses fundamental behaviors as well as more complex, specific, situations is crucial to this endeavor and is presented here. Recent imaging campaigns indicate the likely existence of massive planets (~ 1-10 MJ) on ~1000 year orbits about a few percent of stars. Such objects are not easily explained in most current planet formation models. In this Letter we use ensembles of 100 N-body simulations to evaluate the potential for planet scattering during relaxation of dynamically active systems to explain the population of giant planets with projected separations up to a few 100 AU. We find that such a mechanism could indeed be at play, and that statistical samples of long period planets could place interesting constraints on early stage planet formation scenarios. We present the first results of a survey of 14 low redshift galaxy clusters using Suzaku. Although luminous (L_x> 1\times 10^{43} erg s^{-1} (0.1-2.4 keV)), these clusters have no prior pointed X-ray data. Together with 47 other systems they form a flux limited sample (f_x >1.0 \times 10^{-11} erg s^{-1}cm^{-2} (0.1-2.4 keV)) with z<0.1 in the northern celestial hemisphere. Using this total sample we evaluate the local $L-T$ relationship and the local cluster temperature function. Suzaku temperature measurements appear to be in accord with those of other missions. General agreement is found with other published estimates of the low redshift cluster temperature function, however the sample used here exhibits slightly lower space densities at gas temperatures below 4-5 keV. We find a corresponding deficit in the number of clusters with temperatures between approximately 4.5 and 5.5 keV. Although at low significance, a similar feature exists in previous low redshift cluster datasets. Extrasolar terrestrial planets with the potential to host life might have large obliquities or be subject to strong obliquity variations. We revisit the habitability of oblique planets with an energy balance climate model (EBM) allowing for dynamical transitions to ice-covered snowball states as a result of ice-albedo feedback. Despite the great simplicity of our EBM, it captures reasonably well the seasonal cycle of global energetic fluxes at Earth's surface. It also performs satisfactorily against a full-physics climate model of a highly oblique Earth-like planet, in an unusual regime of circulation dominated by heat transport from the poles to the equator. Climates on oblique terrestrial planets can violate global radiative balance through much of their seasonal cycle, which limits the usefulness of simple radiative equilibrium arguments. High obliquity planets have severe climates, with large amplitude seasonal variations, but they are not necessarily more prone to global snowball transitions than low obliquity planets. We find that terrestrial planets with massive CO2 atmospheres, typically expected in the outer regions of habitable zones, can also be subject to such dynamical snowball transitions. Some of the snowball climates investigated for CO2-rich atmospheres experience partial atmospheric collapse. Since long-term CO2 atmospheric build-up acts as a climatic thermostat for habitable planets, partial CO2 collapse could limit the habitability of such planets. According to the standard liquid-water definition, the Earth is only partially habitable. We reconsider planetary habitability in the framework of energy-balance models, the simplest seasonal models in physical climatology, to assess the spatial and temporal habitability of Earth-like planets. We quantify the degree of climatic habitability of our models with several metrics of fractional habitability. Previous evaluations of habitable zones may have omitted important climatic conditions by focusing on close Solar System analogies. For example, we find that model pseudo-Earths with different rotation rates or different land-ocean fractions have fractional habitabilities that differ significantly from that of the Earth itself. Furthermore, the stability of a planet's climate against albedo-feedback snowball events strongly impacts its habitability. Therefore, issues of climate dynamics may be central in assessing the habitability of discovered terrestrial exoplanets, especially if astronomical forcing conditions are different from the moderate Solar System cases., Comment: Accepted by ApJ. The timing and duration of exoplanet transits has a dependency on observer position due to parallax. In the case of an Earth-bound observer with a 2 AU baseline the dependency is typically small and slightly beyond the limits of current timing precision capabilities. However, it can become an important systematic effect in high-precision repeated transit measurements for long period systems due to its relationship to secular perspective acceleration phenomena. In this short paper we evaluate the magnitude and characteristics of transit parallax in the case of exoplanets using simplified geometric examples. We examine the X-ray luminosity of galaxy groups in the CNOC2 survey, at redshifts 0.1 < z < 0.6. Previous work examining the gravitational lensing signal of the CNOC2 groups has shown that they are likely to be genuine, gravitationally bound objects. Of the 21 groups in the field of view of the EPIC-PN camera on XMM-Newton, not one was visible in over 100 ksec of observation, even though three of the them have velocity dispersions high enough that they would easily be visible if their luminosities scaled with their velocity dispersions in the same way as nearby groups' luminosities scale. We consider the possibility that this is due to the reported velocity dispersions being erroneously high, and conclude that this is unlikely. Moons of giant planets may represent an alternative to the classical picture of habitable worlds. They may exist within the circumstellar habitable zone of a parent star, and through tidal energy dissipation they may also offer alternative habitable zones, where stellar insolation plays a secondary, or complementary, role. We investigate the potential extent of stable satellite orbits around a set of 74 known extrasolar giant planets located beyond 0.6 AU from their parent stars - where moons should be long-lived with respect to removal by stellar tides. Approximately 60% of these giant planets can sustain satellites or moons in bands up to $\sim 0.04$ AU in width. For comparison, the Galiean satellites extend to $\sim 0.013$ AU. We investigate the stellar insolation that moons would experience for these exoplanet systems, and the implications for sublimation loss of volatiles. We find that between 15 and 27% of {\em all} known exoplanets may be capable of harboring small, icy, moons. In addition, some 22-28% of all known exoplanets could harbor moons within a ``sublimation zone'', with insolation temperatures between 273 K and 170 K. A simplified energy balance model is applied to the situation of temperate moons, maintained by a combination of stellar insolation and tidal heat flow. We demonstrate that large moons ($>0.1 $M$_{\oplus}$), at orbital radii commensurate with those of the Galilean satellites, could maintain temperate, or habitable, surface conditions during episodes of tidal heat dissipation of the order 1-100 times that currently seen on Io. We present evidence for a highly obscured X-ray source in one of two giant Ly-alpha emission nebulae in the z=3.09 proto-cluster region SSA22. Neither Ly-alpha nebula is associated with significant radio emission. While one has a significant submillimeter detection and is undetected in the X-ray, the other is a factor of 2-10 times less submillimeter bright and appears to contain a hard-band X-ray source. We discuss our analysis and techniques for assessing the X-ray properties of this source and suggest that we have detected an embedded AGN source in one of these nebulae which may be at least partially responsible for exciting the Ly-alpha emission through a mechanism that is essentially decoupled from the radio, submillimeter, or optical luminosities. We explore the possibility of resolving an image of a damped Lyman alpha (DLA) system in absorption against an extended, diffuse background X-ray source. Typical columns of neutral hydrogen in DLAs are high enough to block out up to ~30% of the soft X-ray flux at an observed photon energy of 0.5 keV, and we find that ~ 1% of the area of extended X-ray sources at z > 1 have their 0.5 keV flux reduced by at least 20%. We discuss the observability of such absorption and find that < 2 arcsecond resolution, and > 300 photons per angular resolution element are required in the 0.3-8 keV band for its detection, and in order to distinguish it from intrinsic surface brightness fluctuations. For the surface brightness of the currently known high-redshift extended X-ray sources, this requires an integration time of a few Msec on Chandra. The origin of the diffuse extragalactic, high-energy gamma-ray background (EGRB) filling the Universe remains unknown. The spectrum of this extragalactic radiation, as measured by the EGRET on-board CGRO, is well-fit by a power law across nearly four decades in energy, from 30 MeV to 100 GeV. It has been estimated that not more than a quarter of the diffuse gamma-ray background could be due to unresolved point sources. Recent studies have suggested that much of the diffuse background could originate from the up-scatter of CMB photons by relativistic electrons produced by shock waves in the IGM during large-scale structure formation. In this work we search for evidence of gamma-ray emission associated with galaxy clusters by cross-correlating high Galactic latitude EGRET data with Abell clusters. Our results indicate a possible association of emission with clusters at a >3-sigma level. For a subset of the 447 richest (R>=2) clusters the mean surface brightness excess is 1.2x10^-6 ph cm^-2 s^-1 sr^-1 (>100MeV), corresponding to a typical non-thermal bolometric luminosity of L_{gamma} ~ 1x10^44 erg s^-1. Extrapolating this measurement and assuming no evolution we conservatively estimate that ~ 1-10 of the EGRB could originate from clusters with z<1. For this cluster population the predicted non-thermal luminosity is in excellent agreement with our measurement, suggesting that the clusters have experienced mass accretion within the last 10^9 yrs. In this short paper I present the results of a calculation which seeks the maximum, or optimal, signal-to-noise energy band for galaxy group or cluster X-ray emission detected by the Chandra and XMM-Newton observatories. Using a background spectrum derived from observations and a grid of models I show that the "classical" 0.5-2 keV band is indeed close to optimal for clusters with gas temperatures >2 keV, and redshifts z<1. For cooler systems however, this band is generally far from optimal. Sub-keV plasmas can suffer 20-60% signal-to-noise loss compared to an optimal band, and worse for z>0. The implication is that current and forthcoming surveys should be carefully constructed in order to minimize bias against the low mass, low temperature end of the cluster/group population., Comment: 9 pages, 4 postscript figures, uses AASTEX, accepted ApJ

We present a comparison of X-ray and optical luminosities and luminosity functions of cluster candidates from a joint optical/X-ray survey, the ROSAT Optical X-Ray Survey. Completely independent X-ray and optical catalogs of 23 ROSAT fields (4.8 deg2) were created by a matched-filter optical algorithm and by a wavelet technique in the X-ray. We directly compare the results of the optical and X-ray selection techniques. The matched-filter technique detected 74% (26 out of 35) of the most reliable cluster candidates in the X-ray-selected sample; the remainder could be either constellations of X-ray point sources or z>1 clusters. The matched-filter technique identified approximately 3 times the number of candidates (152 candidates) found in the X-ray survey of nearly the same sky (57 candidates). While the estimated optical and X-ray luminosities of clusters of galaxies are correlated, the intrinsic scatter in this relationship is very large. We can reproduce the number and distribution of optical clusters with a model defined by the X-ray luminosity function and by an LX Lambda cl relation if H0=75 km s-1 Mpc-1 and if the LX Lambda cl relation is steeper than the expected LX Lambda 2cl. On statistical grounds, a bimodal distribution of X-ray luminous and X-ray faint clusters is unnecessary to explain our observations. Follow-up work is required to confirm whether the clusters without bright X-ray counterparts are simply X-ray faint for their optical luminosity because of their low mass or youth or are a distinct population of clusters that do not, for some reason, have dense intracluster media. We suspect that these optical clusters are low-mass systems, with correspondingly low X-ray temperatures and luminosities, or that they are not yet completely virialized systems., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures. We present and analyze the optical and X-ray catalogs of moderate-redshift cluster candidates from the ROSAT Optical X-ray Survey, or ROXS. The survey covers 4.8 square degrees (23 ROSAT PSPC pointings). The cross-correlated cluster catalogs were constructed by comparing two independent catalogs extracted from the optical and X-ray bandpasses, using a matched filter technique for the optical data and a wavelet technique for the X-ray data. We cross-id cluster candidates in each catalog. In Paper II we present the cluster catalogs and a numerical simulation of ROXS. We also present color-magnitude plots for several cluster candidates, and examine the prominence of the red sequence in each. We find that the X-ray clusters analyzed in this way do not all have a prominent red sequence. We conclude that while the red sequence may be distinct for massive, virialized clusters, it may be less so for lower-mass clusters at even moderate redshifts. Cosmological simulations predict that a large fraction of the baryonic mass of the Universe exists as 10^5-10^7 K diffuse, X-ray emitting gas, tracing low density filament and sheet-like structures exterior to massive clusters of galaxies. If present, this gas helps reconcile the current shortfall in observed baryon counts relative to the predictions of the standard Big Bang model. We present here the discovery and analysis of a 5-sigma significance half-degree filamentary structure, present in both I-band galaxy surface density and unresolved X-ray emission in a deep ROSAT PSPC field. The estimated diffuse X-ray emission component of this structure has a surface brightness of \~ 1.6 x 10^(-16) erg/s/cm^2/arcmin^2 (0.5- 2 keV), comparable to the predictions for inter-cluster gas and may represent a direct detection of this currently unconfirmed baryonic component., Comment: 10 pages, uses aaspp4.sty, 2 figures included, accepted ApJ Letters

The thermodynamics of the diffuse, X-ray emitting gas in clusters of galaxies is linked to the entropy level of the intra cluster medium. In particular, models that successfully reproduce the properties of local X-ray clusters and groups require the presence of a minimum value for the entropy in the center of X-ray halos. Such a minimum entropy is most likely generated by non-gravitational processes, in order to produce the observed break in self-similarity of the scaling relations of X-ray halos. At present there is no consensus on the level, the source or the time evolution of this excess entropy. In this paper we describe a strategy to investigate the physics of the heating processes acting in groups and clusters. We show that the best way to extract information from the local data is the observation of the entropy profile at large radii in nearby X-ray halos (z~0.1), both at the upper and lower extremes of the cluster mass scale. The spatially and spectrally resolved observation of such X-ray halos provides information on the mechanism of the heating. We demonstrate how measurements of the size of constant entropy (adiabatic) cores in clusters and groups can directly constrain heating models, and the minimum entropy value. We also consider two specific experiments: the detection of the shock fronts expected at the virial boundary of rich clusters, and the detection of the isentropic, low surface-brightness emission extending to radii larger than the virial ones in low mass clusters and groups. We report on our ASCA, Keck, and ROSAT observations of MS1137.5+6625, the second most distant cluster of galaxies in the Einstein Extended Medium Sensitivity Survey (EMSS), at redshift 0.78. We now have X-ray temperatures, velocity dispersions, and X-ray images for a complete, high-redshift sample of EMSS clusters. ASCA observations of MS1137.5+6625 yield a temperature of 5.7 +2.1, -1.1 keV and a metallicity of 0.43 +0.40,-0.37 solar (90% confidence). Keck-II spectroscopy of 22 cluster members reveals a velocity dispersion of 884 +185, -124 km/s. ROSAT observations show that MS1137.5+6625 is regular and centrally concentrated. A beta-model fit yields a core radius of only 71 h^{-1} kpc (q_0=0.1) with beta=0.70 +0.45,-0.15. The gas fraction is 0.06 +/-0.04 h^{-3/2}. This is the highest redshift EMSS cluster with a possible cooling flow (~20-400 solar masses/yr). The velocity dispersion, temperature, gas fraction, and iron abundance of MS1137 are statistically the same as those properties in low-z clusters of similar luminosity. We derive a high-z temperature function for EMSS clusters with 0.5 < z < 0.9 and compare it with temperature functions at lower redshifts, showing that evolution of the temperature function is relatively modest. Supplementing our high-z sample with other data, we demonstrate that neither the cluster L-T relation, nor cluster metallicities, nor the cluster gas fraction has detectably evolved with redshift. The very modest degree of evolution in the L-T relation inferred from these data is inconsistent with the absence of evolution in the X-ray luminosity functions derived from ROSAT cluster surveys if a critical-density structure formation model is assumed., Comment: 29 pages, 7 figures. We examine the relationship between the mass and x-ray gas temperature of galaxy clusters using data drawn from the literature. Simple theoretical arguments suggest that the mass of a cluster is related to the x-ray temperature as $M \propto T_x^{3/2}$. Virial theorem mass estimates based on cluster galaxy velocity dispersions seem to be accurately described by this scaling with a normalization consistent with that predicted by the simulations of Evrard, Metzler, & Navarro (1996). X-ray mass estimates which employ spatially resolved temperature profiles also follow a $T_x^{3/2}$ scaling although with a normalization about 40% lower than that of the fit to the virial masses. However, the isothermal $\beta$-model and x-ray surface brightness deprojection masses follow a steeper $\propto T_x^{1.8-2.0}$ scaling. The steepness of the isothermal estimates is due to their implicitly assumed dark matter density profile of $\rho(r) \propto r^{-2}$ at large radii while observations and simulations suggest that clusters follow steeper profiles (e.g., $\rho(r) \propto r^{-2.4}$)., Comment: 25 pages, 10 figures, accepted by ApJ

We present an attempt to measure the large angular scale fluctuations in the X-Ray Background (XRB) from the HEAO1-A2 data, expressed in terms of spherical harmonics. We model the harmonic coefficients assuming a power spectrum and an epoch-dependent bias parameter, and using a phenomenological scenario describing the evolution of the X-ray sources. From the few low-order multipoles detected above shot noise, we estimate the power-spectrum normalization on scales intermediate between those explored by local galaxy redshift surveys (~ 100 Mpc) and by the COBE Microwave Background measurements (~ 1000 Mpc). We find that the HEAO1 harmonics are consistent with present epoch rms fluctuations of the X-ray sources bx(0)sigma8 ~ 1-2 in 8 Mpc spheres. Therefore the observed fluctuations in the XRB are roughly as expected from interpolating between the local galaxy surveys and the COBE CMB experiment. We predict that an X-ray all-sky surface brightness survey resolving sources a factor of 10 fainter than HEAO1, may reveal fluctuations to significantly larger angular scales and therefore more strongly constrain the large scale structure of the Universe on scales of hundreds of Mpcs., Comment: 14 pages, 3 Postscript figures, uses aaspp4.sty and psfig.
