Abstract

The diversification of products increases the complexity of production, which intensifies the demands placed on employees. Digital assistance is expected to improve employee performance and flexibility. This paper examines the impact of digital assistance on labor productivity (hourly output) and experience of use in dependence on process complexity and employee competence. Within the framework of an empirical study in the process learning factory CiP of the TU Darmstadt, the effect was quantified using the example of a typical assembly process. This paper presents the concept and the results of the study. After the classification of an assembly task, these results can be used to support the selection decision for a digital assistance system according to cost–benefit aspects.

8. Lightweight hybrid CFRP design for machine tools with focus on simple manufacturing

Abstract

There is a continuing demand in machine tools for an increase in productivity. This can be achieved by higher speeds and process parameters, which demand structures with a high stiffness to weight ratio including the use of materials with a high specific modulus. The lack of standardized interfaces and more complex design and manufacturing process prevent the broad use of these materials. This applies especially for CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced polymer) which has the highest specific modulus compared to conventional construction materials. Due to that and the higher material damping in comparison with steel, parts out of CFRP can improve the precision of machine tools. These advantages often remain unutilized because of the challenging integration of CFRP parts. Therefore, this paper presents an innovative approach to use CFRP in a hybrid design for machine tool structures focusing on improved dynamic behavior, increased specific stiffness, and ease of manufacture.

Abstract

The increase in cyber-attacks impacts the performance of organizations in the industrial sector, exploiting the vulnerabilities of networked machines. The increasing digitization and technologies present in the context of Industry 4.0 have led to a rise in investments in innovation and automation. However, there are risks associated with this digital transformation, particularly regarding cyber security. Targeted cyber-attacks are constantly changing and improving their attack strategies, with a focus on applying artificial intelligence in the execution process. Artificial Intelligence-based cyber-attacks can be used in conjunction with conventional technologies, generating exponential damage in organizations in Industry 4.0. The increasing reliance on networked information technology has increased the cyber-attack surface. In this sense, studies aiming at understanding the actions of cyber criminals, to develop knowledge for cyber security measures, are essential. This paper presents a systematic literature research to identify publications of artificial intelligence-based cyber-attacks and to analyze them for deriving cyber security measures. The goal of this study is to make use of literature analysis to explore the impact of this new threat, aiming to provide the research community with insights to develop defenses against potential future threats. The results can be used to guide the analysis of cyber-attacks supported by artificial intelligence.

Abstract

The industry relies on interdisciplinarity to promote advancements. The diverse engineering domains, information technologies, management and social sciences are combined in the industrial environment and oriented o society’s ever-changing demands. In parallel, the demographic shifts caused by population aging present room for innovation on many fronts, such as in health, technology, industry, products, and services, and in the same way in product development processes. In an attempt to tackle such issues, this article discusses how the addressing of the elderly population demands, particularly the demand for smart products, might be supported by the principles of production digitalization. In doing so, it proposes a conceptual framework for the development of smart products for the elderly, sustained by three core pillars: specific product lifecycle stages, Industrie 4.0 requirements for smart product development; and Industrie 4.0 enabling technologies which are integrated by the User-Centered Design philosophy. Their combination into a framework aims at addressing two main points: assist in the translation of elderly real consumers’ expectations and demands into more adequate, appealing products and in creating a transition path for companies who wish to incorporate the principles and technologies of production digitalization in their value chain. Furthermore, the article discusses how this proposal could be validated in the real industrial environment.

47. Intergated Process Planning Based On A Federative Factory Data Management

Abstract

Manufacturing companies are confronted with short product life cycles, more variety of products and short cycles of leap innovations. This results in a higher frequency of changes in factory structures and an increasing importance of factory planning processes. Factory planning processes are characterized by participative and interdisciplinary processes due to various actors dealing in different domains and working in distributed environments. The result is a heterogeneous IT-landscape based on increasing use of multiple isolated and domain-specific IT tools and systems and hereby an increasing redundant, inhomogeneous and inconsistent data-holding. The control of these factory planning processes can be reached by holistic approaches and consistent system integration. The mean of system integration is the consideration of all domains involved in planning processes, used IT tools and systems and business processes. In this paper, the approach of a Federative Factory Data Management (FFDM) based on Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and Semantic Model funded by the DFG (Germany) and CAPES (Brazil) will be described, which faces up the described challenges of factory planning processes. The focus of this approach is on the integration of isolated used IT tools for the dimensioning and structuring of factory systems, the generated domain-specific partial models as well as the coordination and synchronization of engineering workflows. In order of the control of factory planning processes the integration and coupling of the views of products, processes and resources on metadata level is required for a communication between different isolated and domain-specific IT tools of the various involved domains without losses or redundancies. The integration and coupling of these three views is based on a document independent factory structure description linked with factory defining metadata. In order to integrate and couple these different views, the relevant information and independencies are identified. Current reference process models for production and factory planning as well as the current methods to describe domain-specific models are analyzed. This is the basis for the development of the FFDM to build up a semantically coherent information model as a common communication and integration framework to represent the factory and to define and to access factory data. The goal of the presented approach is the increasing of planning harmonization, certainty, quality and frequency by a consistent information flow as well as the reduction of time of product development and factory planning processes.
