Meat and dairy production and consumption are the subject of ongoing public debates that touch on various sustainability issues such as biodiversity loss, climate change, animal welfare, and social and health aspects. Despite extensive discussions specifically relating to the environmental impacts of livestock farming in conjunction with animal welfare aspects, there have been no substantial changes in production or consumption patterns. Moreover, the focus of extant research is usually on consumers' responses to public concerns around livestock production. In this study, we shed light on the discrepancy between the normative discourse and action of relevant value chain actors with the help of Bandura's theory of moral disengagement, which allows us to identify mechanisms that contribute to the perpetuation of unsustainable production and consumption patterns. In particular, we focus on the shifting of responsibility between actors in the normatively charged field of sustainable livestock production. We collected 109 media interviews on meat and dairy production and consumption from the years 2020-2022, including interviews with actors from agriculture, processing industries, and food retail. Using qualitative content analysis, we investigated the role of moral disengagement in the media discourse on meat and dairy production and explored differences between actors in terms of moral disengagement. We found that shifting of responsibility shows a quasi-circular dynamic of being shifted from all actors to all, in our case most frequently to consumers, politics, and (diffuse) economic forces. Labile copper(II) ions (Cu 2+ ) in serum are considered to be readily available for cellular uptake and to constitute the biologically active Cu 2+ species in the blood. It might also be suitable to reflect copper dyshomeostasis during diseases such as Wilson's disease (WD) or neurological disorders. So far, no direct quantification method has been described to determine this small Cu 2+ subset. This study introduces a fluorometric high throughput assay using the novel Cu 2+ binding fluoresceine-peptide sensor FP4 (Kd of the Cu 2+ -FP4-complex 0.38 pM) to determine labile Cu 2+ in human and rat serum. Using 96 human serum samples, labile Cu 2+ was measured to be 0.14 ± 0.05 pM, showing no correlation with age or other serum trace elements. No sex-specific differences in labile Cu 2+ concentrations were noted, in contrast to the total copper levels in serum. Analysis of the effect of drug therapy on labile Cu 2+ in the sera of 19 patients with WD showed a significant decrease in labile Cu 2+ following copper chelation therapy, suggesting that labile Cu 2+ may be a specific marker of disease status and that the assay could be suitable for monitoring treatment progress., (© 2023. Although therapeutically active proteins are highly efficacious, their content in protective nanoparticles is often too low to elicit adequate plasma levels. A strategy to increase protein loading is the in-situ generation of calcium phosphate as a protein adsorbent. To verify this approach, a highly sensitive and reliable fluorimetric method for quantification of incorporated fluorescein-labelled bovine serum albumin (FITC-BSA) as a model protein drug was developed. Dequenching the fluorescein label by pronase E, which digests the protein backbone, and dissolving the nanoparticle matrix in acetonitrile enabled FITC-BSA quantification in the nanogram per milliliter range. This test was confirmed by a second assay involving alkaline hydrolysis of FITC-BSA and the matrix. Nanoparticles prepared with calcium phosphate contained 40 µg FITC-BSA/mg and nanoparticles without calcium phosphate only 15 µg FITC-BSA/mg, representing a 2.7-fold increase in model protein loading. While many C 4 lineages have Kranz anatomy around individual veins, Salsoleae have evolved the Salsoloid Kranz anatomy where a continuous dual layer of chlorenchyma cells encloses the vascular and water-storage tissue. With the aim of elucidating the evolution of C 4 photosynthesis in Salsoleae, a broadly sampled molecular phylogeny and anatomical survey was conducted, together with biochemical, microscopic, and physiological analyses of selected photosynthetic types. From analyses of photosynthetic phenotypes, a model for evolution of this form of C 4 was compared with models for evolution of Kranz anatomy around individual veins. A functionally C 3 proto-Kranz phenotype (Proto-Kranz Sympegmoid) and intermediates with a photorespiratory pump (Kranz-like Sympegmoid and Kranz-like Salsoloid types) are considered crucial transitional steps towards C 4 development. The molecular phylogeny provides evidence for C 3 being the ancestral photosynthetic pathway but there is no phylogenetic evidence for the ancestry of C 3 -C 4 intermediacy with respect to C 4 in Salsoleae. Traits considered advantageous in arid conditions, such as annual life form, central sclerenchyma in leaves, and reduction of surface area, evolved repeatedly in Salsoleae. The recurrent evolution of a green stem cortex taking over photosynthesis in C 4 clades of Salsoleae concurrent with leaf reduction was probably favoured by the higher productivity of the C 4 cycle., (© The Author 2016. The Macaronesian laurel forests (MLF) are dominated by trees with a laurophyll habit comparable to evergreen humid forests which were scattered across Europe and the Mediterranean in the Paleogene and Neogene. Therefore, MLF are traditionally regarded as an old, 'Tertiary relict' vegetation type. Here we address the question if key taxa of the MLF are relictual. We evaluated the relict hypothesis consulting fossil data and analyses based on molecular phylogenies of 18 representative species. For molecular dating we used the program BEAST, for ancestral trait reconstructions BayesTraits and Lagrange to infer ancestral areas. Our molecular dating showed that the origins of four species date back to the Upper Miocene while 14 originated in the Plio-Pleistocene. This coincides with the decline of fossil laurophyllous elements in Europe since the middle Miocene. Ancestral trait and area reconstructions indicate that MLF evolved partly from pre-adapted taxa from the Mediterranean, Macaronesia and the tropics. According to the fossil record laurophyllous taxa existed in Macaronesia since the Plio- and Pleistocene. MLF are composed of species with a heterogeneous origin. The taxa dated to the Pleistocene are likely not 'Tertiary relicts'. Some species may be interpreted as relictual. In this case, the establishment of most species in the Plio-Pleistocene suggests that there was a massive species turnover before this time. Alternatively, MLF were largely newly assembled through global recruitment rather than surviving as relicts of a once more widespread vegetation. This process may have possibly been triggered by the intensification of the trade winds at the end of the Pliocene as indicated by proxy data.
