Phonons in solid-state quantum emitters play a crucial role in their performance as photon sources in quantum technology. For resonant driving, phonons dampen the Rabi oscillations resulting in reduced preparation fidelities. The phonon spectral density, which quantifies the strength of the carrier-phonon interaction, is non-monotonous as a function of energy. As one of the most prominent consequences, this leads to the reappearance of Rabi rotations for increasing pulse power, which was theoretically predicted in Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 227403 (2007). In this paper we present the experimental demonstration of the reappearance of Rabi rotations.

We study numerically the effects of time delay in networks of delay-coupled excitable FitzHugh Nagumo systems with dissipation. The generation of periodic self-sustained oscillations and its threshold are analyzed depending on the dissipation of a single neuron, the delay time, and random initial conditions. The peculiarities of spatiotemporal dynamics of time-delayed bidirectional ring-structured FitzHugh-Nagumo neuronal systems are investigated in cases of local and nonlocal coupling topology between the nodes, and a first-order nonequilibrium phase transition to synchrony is established. It is shown that the emergence of oscillatory activity in delay-coupled FitzHugh-Nagumo neurons is observed for smaller values of the coupling strength as the dissipation parameter decreases. This can provide the possibility of controlling the spatiotemporal behavior of the considered neuronal networks. The observed effects are quantified by plotting distributions of the maximal Lyapunov exponent and the global order parameter in terms of delay and coupling strength., Comment: 14 pages, 17 figures

Photonic quantum technologies$^1$, with applications in quantum communication, sensing as well as quantum simulation and computing, are on the verge of becoming commercially available. One crucial building block are tailored nanoscale integratable quantum light sources, matching the specific needs of use-cases. Several different approaches to realize solid-state quantum emitters$^2$ with high performance$^3$ have been pursued. However, the properties of the emitted single photons are always defined by the individual quantum light source and despite numerous quantum emitter tuning techniques$^{4-7}$, scalability is still a major challenge. Here we show an emitter-independent method to tailor and control the properties of the single photon emission. We demonstrate a laser-controlled down-conversion process from an excited state of a quantum three-level system$^8$. Starting from a biexciton state, a tunable control laser field defines a virtual state in a stimulated process. From there, spontaneous emission to the ground state leads to optically controlled single photon emission. Based on this concept, we demonstrate energy tuning of the single photon emission with a control laser field. The nature of the involved quantum states furthermore provides a unique basis for the future control of polarization and bandwidth, as predicted by theory$^{9,10}$. Our demonstration marks an important step towards tailored single photon emission from a photonic quantum system based on quantum optical principles.

Dynamical effects on healthy brains and brains affected by tumor are investigated via numerical simulations. The brains are modeled as multilayer networks consisting of neuronal oscillators, whose connectivities are extracted from Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) data. The numerical results demonstrate that the healthy brain presents chimera-like states where regions with high white matter concentrations in the direction connecting the two hemispheres act as the coherent domain, while the rest of the brain presents incoherent oscillations. To the contrary, in brains with destructed structure traveling waves are produced initiated at the region where the tumor is located. These areas act as the pacemaker of the waves sweeping across the brain. The numerical simulations are performed using two neuronal models: a) the FitzHugh-Nagumo model and b) the Leaky Integrate-and-Fire model. Both models give consistent results regarding the chimera-like oscillations in healthy brains and the pacemaker effect in the tumorous brains. These results are considered as a starting point for further investigation in the detection of tumors with small sizes before becoming discernible on the MRI recordings, as well as in tumor development and evolution., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures

We study patterns of partial synchronization in a network of FitzHugh-Nagumo oscillators with empirical structural connectivity measured in human subjects. We report the spontaneous occurrence of synchronization phenomena that closely resemble the ones seen during epileptic seizures in humans. In order to obtain deeper insights into the interplay between dynamics and network topology, we perform long-term simulations of oscillatory dynamics on different paradigmatic network structures: random networks, regular nonlocally coupled ring networks, ring networks with fractal connectivities, and small-world networks with various rewiring probability. Among these networks, a small-world network with intermediate rewiring probability best mimics the findings achieved with the simulations using the empirical structural connectivity. For the other network topologies, either no spontaneously occurring epileptic-seizure-related synchronization phenomena can be observed in the simulated dynamics, or the overall degree of synchronization remains high throughout the simulation. This indicates that a topology with some balance between regularity and randomness favors the self-initiation and self-termination of episodes of seizure-like strong synchronization.

Classical chimera states are paradigmatic examples of partial synchronization patterns emerging in nonlinear dynamics. These states are characterized by the spatial coexistence of two dramatically different dynamical behaviors, i.e., synchronized and desynchronized dynamics. Our aim in this contribution is to discuss signatures of chimera states in quantum mechanics. We study a network with a ring topology consisting of N coupled quantum Van der Pol oscillators. We describe the emergence of chimera-like quantum correlations in the covariance matrix. We show that amplitude chimeras in ring networks of Stuart-Landau oscillators with symmetry-breaking nonlocal coupling represent saddle-states in the underlying phase space of the network. Chimera states are composed of coexisting spatial domains of coherent and of incoherent oscillations. We calculate the Floquet exponents and the corresponding eigenvectors in dependence upon the coupling strength and range, and discuss the implications for the phase space structure. The existence of at least one positive real part of the Floquet exponents indicates an unstable manifold in phase space, which explains the nature of these states as long-living transients. Additionally, we find a Stuart-Landau network of minimum size $N=12$ exhibiting amplitude chimeras

The effects of nonlocal and reflecting connectivity are investigated in coupled Leaky Integrate-and-Fire (LIF) elements, which assimilate the exchange of electrical signals between neurons. Earlier investigations have demonstrated that non-local and hierarchical network connectivity often induces complex synchronization patterns and chimera states in systems of coupled oscillators. In the LIF system we show that if the elements are non-locally linked with positive diffusive coupling in a ring architecture the system splits into a number of alternating domains. Half of these domains contain elements, whose potential stays near the threshold, while they are interrupted by active domains, where the elements perform regular LIF oscillations. The active domains move around the ring with constant velocity, depending on the system parameters. The idea of introducing reflecting non-local coupling in LIF networks originates from signal exchange between neurons residing in the two hemispheres in the brain. We show evidence that this connectivity induces novel complex spatial and temporal structures: for relatively extensive ranges of parameter values the system splits in two coexisting domains, one domain where all elements stay near-threshold and one where incoherent states develop with multileveled mean phase velocity distribution., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures

We study synchronization in heterogeneous FitzHugh-Nagumo networks. It is well known that heterogeneities in the nodes hinder synchronization when becoming too large. Here, we develop a controller to counteract the impact of these heterogeneities. We first analyze the stability of the equilibrium point in a ring network of heterogeneous nodes. We then derive a sufficient condition for synchronization in the absence of control. Based on these results we derive the controller providing synchronization for parameter values where synchronization without control is absent. We demonstrate our results in networks with different topologies. Particular attention is given to hierarchical (fractal) topologies, which are relevant for the architecture of the brain.

Chimera states are complex spatiotemporal patterns in networks of identical oscillators, characterized by the coexistence of synchronized and desynchronized dynamics. Here we propose to extend the phenomenon of chimera states to the quantum regime, and uncover intriguing quantum signatures of these states. We calculate the quantum fluctuations about semiclassical trajectories and demonstrate that chimera states in the quantum regime can be characterized by bosonic squeezing, weighted quantum correlations, and measures of mutual information. Our findings reveal the relation of chimera states to quantum information theory, and give promising directions for experimental realization of chimera states in quantum systems., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, and supplemental material. We study synchronization in delay-coupled neural networks of heterogeneous nodes. It is well known that heterogeneities in the nodes hinder synchronization when becoming too large. We show that an adaptive tuning of the overall coupling strength can be used to counteract the effect of the heterogeneity. Our adaptive controller is demonstrated on ring networks of FitzHugh-Nagumo systems which are paradigmatic for excitable dynamics but can also -- depending on the system parameters -- exhibit self-sustained periodic firing. We show that the adaptively tuned time-delayed coupling enables synchronization even if parameter heterogeneities are so large that excitable nodes coexist with oscillatory ones.

Using the model of a generalized Van der Pol oscillator in the regime of subcritical Hopf bifurcation we investigate the influence of time delay on noise-induced oscillations. It is shown that for appropriate choices of time delay either suppression or enhancement of coherence resonance can de achieved. Analytical calculations are combined with numerical simulations and experiments on an electronic circuit.

This paper studies the stability of synchronized states in networks where couplings between nodes are characterized by some distributed time delay, and develops a generalized master stability function approach. Using a generic example of Stuart-Landau oscillators, it is shown how the stability of synchronized solutions in networks with distributed delay coupling can be determined through a semi-analytic computation of Floquet exponents. We show that oscillation death as a specific type of oscillation suppression, which implies symmetry breaking, can be controlled by introducing time-delayed coupling. In particular, we demonstrate that time delay influences the stability of an inhomogeneous steady state, providing the opportunity to modulate the threshold for oscillation death. This paper studies the effects of distributed delay coupling on the dynamics in a system of non-identical coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators. For uniform and gamma delay distribution kernels, conditions for amplitude death are obtained in terms of average frequency, frequency detuning and parameters of the coupling, including coupling strength and phase, as well as the mean time delay and the width of the delay distribution. To gain further insight into the dynamics inside amplitude death regions, eigenvalues of the corresponding characteristic equations are computed numerically. Oscillatory dynamics of the system is also investigated using amplitude and phase representation. This paper studies the effects of coupling with distributed delay on the suppression of oscillations in a system of coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators. Conditions for amplitude death are obtained in terms of strength and phase of the coupling, as well as the mean time delay and the width of the delay distribution for uniform and gamma distributions. Analytical results are confirmed by numerical computation of the eigenvalues of the corresponding characteristic equations. These results indicate that larger widths of delay distribution increase the regions of amplitude death in the parameter space. In the case of a uniformly distributed delay kernel, for sufficiently large width of the delay distribution it is possible to achieve amplitude death for an arbitrary value of the average time delay, provided that the coupling strength has a value in the appropriate range. For a gamma distribution of delay, amplitude death is also possible for an arbitrary value of the average time delay, provided that it exceeds a certain value as determined by the coupling phase and the power law of the distribution. This paper studies the effects of a time-delayed feedback control on the appearance and development of spatiotemporal patterns in a reaction-diffusion system. Different types of control schemes are investigated, including single-species, diagonal, and mixed control. This approach helps to unveil different dynamical regimes, which arise from chaotic state or from traveling waves. In the case of spatiotemporal chaos, the control can either stabilize uniform steady states or lead to bistability between a trivial steady state and a propagating traveling wave. Furthermore, when the basic state is a stable traveling pulse, the control is able to advance stationary Turing patterns or yield the above-mentioned bistability regime. In each case, the stability boundary is found in the parameter space of the control strength and the time delay, and numerical simulations suggest that diagonal control fails to control the spatiotemporal chaos., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures

We present an analysis of time-delayed feedback control used to stabilize an unstable steady state of a neutral delay differential equation. Stability of the controlled system is addressed by studying the eigenvalue spectrum of a corresponding characteristic equation with two time delays. An analytic expression for the stabilizing control strength is derived in terms of original system parameters and the time delay of the control. Theoretical and numerical results show that the interplay between the control strength and two time delays provides a number of regions in the parameter space where the time-delayed feedback control can successfully stabilize an otherwise unstable steady state., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

Spectral properties and transition to instability in neutral delay differential equations are investigated in the limit of large delay. An approximation of the upper boundary of stability is found and compared to an analytically derived exact stability boundary. The approximate and exact stability borders agree quite well for the large time delay, and the inclusion of a time-delayed velocity feedback improves this agreement for small delays. We show that a tilted magnetic field transforms the structure and THz dynamics of charge domains in a biased semiconductor superlattice. At critical field values, strong coupling between the Bloch and cyclotron motion of a miniband electron triggers chaotic delocalization of the electron orbits, causing strong resonant enhancement of their drift velocity. This dramatically affects the collective electron behavior by inducing multiple propagating charge domains and GHz-THz current oscillations with frequencies ten times higher than with no tilted field., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

We theoretically study chaos synchronization of two lasers which are delay-coupled via an active or a passive relay. While the lasers are synchronized, their dynamics is identical to a single laser with delayed feedback for a passive relay and identical to two delay-coupled lasers for an active relay. Depending on the coupling parameters the system exhibits bubbling, i.e., noise-induced desynchronization, or on-off intermittency. We associate the desynchronization dynamics in the coherence collapse and low frequency fluctuation regimes with the transverse instability of some of the compound cavity's antimodes. The influence of time delay in systems of two coupled excitable neurons is studied in the framework of the FitzHugh-Nagumo model. Time-delay can occur in the coupling between neurons or in a self-feedback loop. The stochastic synchronization of instantaneously coupled neurons under the influence of white noise can be deliberately controlled by local time-delayed feedback. By appropriate choice of the delay time synchronization can be either enhanced or suppressed. In delay-coupled neurons, antiphase oscillations can be induced for sufficiently large delay and coupling strength. We study the effect of a time-delayed feedback within a generic model for a saddle-node bifurcation on a limit cycle. Without delay the only attractor below this global bifurcation is a stable node. Delay renders the phase space infinite-dimensional and creates multistability of periodic orbits and the fixed point. We propose a new method to control the roughness of a growing surface, via a time-delayed feedback scheme. As an illustration, we apply this method to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation in 1+1 dimensions and show that the effective growth exponent of the surface width can be stabilized at any desired value in the interval [0.25,0.33], for a significant length of time. The method is quite general and can be applied to a wide range of growth phenomena. A possible experimental realization is suggested., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Based on a cellular automaton model the growth kinetics and the critical surface dynamics of cell monolayers is systematically studied by variation of the cell migration activity, the size of the proliferation zone and the cell cycle time distribution over wide ranges. The model design avoids lattice artifacts and ensures high performance. The monolayer expansion velocity derived from our simulations can be interpreted as a generalization of the velocity relationship for a traveling front in the Fisher-Kolmogorov-Petrovskii-Piskounov (FKPP) equation that is frequently used to model tumor growth phenomena by continuum models. The critical surface dynamics corresponds to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class for all parameters and model variations studied. While the velocity agrees quantitatively with experimental observations by Bru et al, the critical surface dynamics is in contrast to their interpretation as generic molecular-beam-epitaxy-like growth.

We investigate feedback control of the cooperative dynamics of two coupled neural oscillators that is induced merely by external noise. The interacting neurons are modelled as FitzHugh-Nagumo systems with parameter values at which no autonomous oscillations occur, and each unit is forced by its own source of random fluctuations. Application of delayed feedback to only one of two subsystems is shown to be able to change coherence and timescales of noise induced oscillations either in the given subsystem, or globally. We refute an often invoked theorem which claims that a periodic orbit with an odd number of real Floquet multipliers greater than unity can never be stabilized by time-delayed feedback control in the form proposed by Pyragas. Using a generic normal form, we demonstrate that the unstable periodic orbit generated by a subcritical Hopf bifurcation, which has a single real unstable Floquet multiplier, can in fact be stabilized. We derive explicit analytical conditions for the control matrix in terms of the amplitude and the phase of the feedback control gain, and present a numerical example. We show that elastic interactions of an array of self-assembled quantum dots in a parent material matrix are markedly distinct from the elastic field created by a single point defect, and can explain the observed abrupt correlation--anticorrelation transition in semiconductor quantum dot stacks. Finite volume effects of the quantum dots are shown to lead to sharper transitions. Our analysis also predicts the inclination angle under which the alignment in successive quantum dot layers occurs in dependence on the material anisotropy.

We show that time-delayed feedback methods, which have successfully been used to control unstable periodic ortbits, provide a tool to stabilize unstable steady states. We theoretically consider charge transport through two quantum dots coupled in series. The corresponding full counting statistics for noninteracting electrons is investigated in the limits of sequential and coherent tunneling by means of a master equation approach and a density matrix formalism, respectively. We clearly demonstrate the effect of quantum coherence on the zero-frequency cumulants of the transport process, focusing on noise and skewness. Moreover, we establish the continuous transition from the coherent to the incoherent tunneling limit in all cumulants of the transport process and compare this with decoherence described by a dephasing voltage probe model., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Tunneling through two vertically coupled quantum dots is studied by means of a Pauli master equation model. The observation of double peaks in the current-voltage characteristic in a recent experiment is analyzed in terms of the tunnel coupling between the quantum dots and the coupling to the contacts. Different regimes for the emitter chemical potential indicating different peak scenarios in the tunneling current are discussed in detail. We show by comparison with a density matrix approach that the interplay of coherent and incoherent effects in the stationary current can be fully described by this approach., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

Time--delayed feedback is exploited for controlling noise--induced motion in coherence resonance oscillators. Namely, under the proper choice of time delay, one can either increase or decrease the regularity of motion. It is shown that in an excitable system, delayed feedback can stabilize the frequency of oscillations against variation of noise strength. Also, for fixed noise intensity, the phenomenon of entrainment of the basic oscillation period by the delayed feedback occurs. Due to the Fermi-Dirac statistics of electrons the temporal correlations of tunneling events in a double barrier setup are typically negative. Here, we investigate the shot noise behavior of a system of two capacitively coupled quantum dot states by means of a Master equation model. In an asymmetric setup positive correlations in the tunneling current can arise due to the bunching of tunneling events. We present a novel scheme to stabilize high-frequency domain oscillations in semiconductor superlattices by a time-delayed feedback loop. Applying concepts from chaos control theory we propose to control the spatio-temporal dynamics of fronts of accumulation and depletion layers which are generated at the emitter and may collide and annihilate during their transit, and thereby suppress chaos. The double barrier resonant tunneling diode exhibits complex spatio-temporal patterns including low-dimensional chaos when operated in an active external circuit. We demonstrate how autosynchronization by time--delayed feedback control can be used to select and stabilize specific current density patterns in a noninvasive way. We compare the efficiency of different control schemes involving feedback in either local spatial or global degrees of freedom. The low-frequency shot noise properties of two electrostatically coupled semiconductor quantum dot states which are connected to emitter/collector contacts are studied. A master equation approach is used to analyze the bias voltage dependence of the Fano factor as a measure of temporal correlations in tunneling current caused by Pauli's exclusion principle and the Coulomb interaction. In particular, the influence of the Coulomb interaction on the shot noise behavior is discussed in detail and predictions for future experiments will be given. This paper considers the self-consistent Coulomb interaction within arrays of self-assembled InAs quantum dots (QDs) which are embedded in a pn structure. Strong emphasis is being put on the statistical occupation of the electronic QD states which has to be solved self-consistently with the actual three-dimensional potential distribution. A model which is based on a Green's function formalism including screening effects is used to calculate the interaction of QD carriers within an array of QDs, where screening due to the inhomogeneous bulk charge distribution is taken into acount. We apply our model to simulate capacitance-voltage (CV) characteristics of a pn structure with embedded QDs. We present a general method for studying front propagation in nonlinear systems with a global constraint in the language of hybrid tank models. The method is illustrated in the case of semiconductor superlattices, where the dynamics of the electron accumulation and depletion fronts shows complex spatio-temporal patterns, including chaos. We show that this behavior may be elegantly explained by a tank model, for which analytical results on the emergence of chaos are available. The shot noise suppression in a sample containing a layer of self-assembled InAs quantum dots has been investigated experimentally and theoretically. The observation of a non-monotonic dependence of the Fano factor on the bias voltage in a regime where only few quantum dot ground states contribute to the tunneling current is analyzed by a master equation model. Bistability in quantum dot structures is examined by a drift-diffusion model in combination with electron capture and emission processes. Our simulations provide a dynamic scenario with extremely long switching times of the order of months and the results are in good agreement with the experimental findings of Yusa and Sakaki [Appl.
