14. Short-term noise annoyance towards drones and other transportation noise sources: A laboratory study.

Abstract

Noise from unmanned aerial vehicles, commonly referred to as "drones," will likely shape our acoustic environment in the near future. Yet, reactions of the population to this new noise source are still little explored. The objective of this study was to investigate short-term noise annoyance reactions to drones in a controlled laboratory experiment. Annoyance to (i) two quadcopters of different sizes in relation to common contemporary transportation noise sources (jet aircraft, propeller aircraft, helicopters, single car passbys), and (ii) different drone maneuvers (takeoff; landing; high, medium, and low flybys) flown at different speeds and elevations was systematically assessed. The results revealed that, at the same sound exposure level, drones are perceived as substantially more annoying than other airborne vehicles and passenger cars. Furthermore, for drone maneuvers, landings, and takeoffs are more annoying than flybys, as are maneuvers flown at low speed. Different loudness metrics (LAE, LDE, effective perceived noise level, psychoacoustic loudness level) accounted for drone noise annoyance ratings to an equal degree. An analysis of psychoacoustic parameters highlighted the significant link between drone noise annoyance and tonality, sharpness, and loudness level. Abstract

The European research project ARTEM (Aircraft noise Reduction Technologies and related Environmental iMpact) develops innovative aircraft noise reduction technologies such as advanced engine fan lining, metamaterials and low-noise high-lift systems applied to a vehicle with enhanced shielding of the engine noise, namely, a blended wing body. Using aircraft flyover auralisation in laboratory listening experiments, such future technologies can be evaluated with respect to human sound perception. To assess the reliability of such perception-based evaluations, the simulation chain should be validated with existing aircraft flyovers. This contribution presents a systematic and rigorous hierarchical validation of auralisations of current jet aircraft using field recordings. Uncertainty in the source modelling is considered by using two different prediction tools for partial sound sources. In addition to comparing computed noise indicators, a psychoacoustic validation is done in laboratory listening experiments with a 3D loudspeaker array. The validation comprises three levels: (i) direct comparison of auralisations with recordings to study the identifiability of auralisations, (ii) ranking of auralisations and recordings regarding plausibility, and (iii) subjective annoyance ratings to test whether auralisations and recordings differ with respect to noise effects. Further, first results on the comparison of a future concept with a current aircraft are presented.

Abstract

In the context of aircraft noise simulations, an accurate representation of the aircraft noise sources is crucial so that reliable predictions can be obtained. In this contribution, we present a comparative study between the predictions provided by the emission models based on the DLR in-house code PANAM and the sonAIR simulation software. Both are based on semi-empirical descriptions of the engine and airframe noise contributions, meaning that the emission levels are modeled separately for each noise source according to the operational conditions of the aircraft. This allows the comparison of the emission models not only in terms of the aircraft's overall noise levels, but also regarding its different noise sources. The comparative study considers models representing the noise emissions of an A319 aircraft, which are provided by both simulation tools but further simulated within the sonAIR software environment in order to yield noise immission levels on a large calculation area. In general, a good agreement is observed for the departure procedure due to the similar performance of the engine noise models. In contrast, larger differences are observed during the approach procedure and at larger distances from the runway, which might be explained by differences in the airframe noise models.

Abstract

Aircraft noise affects large areas around airports. Noise calculation programs therefore need to account for air operations with high accuracy. In this contribution, we simulated several thousand single flights with three aircraft noise calculation models, namely sonAIR, FLULA2 and AEDT, and compared the results among each other and with corresponding noise measurements to evaluate their accuracy. While FLULA2 and sonAIR calculations are adjusted to local conditions, AEDT was run with default settings (NPD data and standard procedural profiles) to assess its performance when using unadjusted input data. We found that results of all three programs on average agree well with measurements and with each other. sonAIR is more accurate when using flight configuration data, but also in greater distances to the airports. Exemplarily adaptations of AEDT input data to local conditions showed that such adaptations clearly improve its calculation results. The contribution thus shows that, despite their inherently different modelling approaches, (a) all three programs are on average equally capable of reproducing the sound exposure in the vicinity of airports, (b) adaptions of input data to local conditions substantially improve results and (c) sonAIR is able to reproduce single flights with higher accuracy when provided with flight configuration data. Aims It is unclear whether night-time noise events, including from aeroplanes, could trigger a cardiovascular death. In this study, we investigate the potential acute effects of aircraft noise on mortality and the specific role of different night-time exposure windows by means of a case-crossover study design. Methods and results We selected 24 886 cases of death from cardiovascular disease (CVD) from the Swiss National Cohort around Zürich Airport between 2000 and 2015. 43. Psychoacoustic model for predicting wind turbine noise annoyance

Abstract

Noise annoyance caused by wind turbines is a critical issue for the societal acceptance of wind energy. Wind turbine noise exposure is typically assessed using conventional time–averaged metrics, however, the literature suggests that these metrics do not fully capture the sound properties responsible for the perceived noise annoyance. Therefore, it is questionable to assess wind turbine noise and its abatement strategies using only such metrics. This paper presents a novel psychoacoustic model for predicting wind turbine noise annoyance that combines perception–based sound quality metrics. To establish the psychoacoustic model, the synthetic sound signals of two different wind turbines equipped with four state–of–the–art noise reduction add–ons (two types of trailing–edge serrations and two types of trailing–edge permeable materials inserts) were studied. Using a parametric wind turbine noise generator, the simulated sound signals were auralized at different observer positions and their noise annoyance was evaluated in two laboratory listening experiments with 16 and 10 subjects, respectively. The psychoacoustic annoyance model proposed here provides a very close agreement with the results of the listening experiment and improved accuracy compared to conventional sound metrics., Aircraft Noise and Climate Effects
