In this work we present novel results concerning water quality changes in an eutrophic water body connected with an artificial aeration system installed in it. Sixty one in-situ and laboratory measurements of biogeochemical variables were recorded monthly between October 2008 and June 2011 to evaluate temporal and spatial changes in San Roque reservoir (Argentina). t-Student mean difference tests, carried out over the whole period, showed with 95% confidence that a monitoring point located at the centre of the water body is representative of the chemical behaviour of the reservoir. Thermal stratification was observed in all sampling sites in the summer, but the frequency of these episodes was markedly lower in bubbling zones. Mean chlorophyll-a concentrations were 58.9 μg·dm−3 and 117.0 μg·dm−3 in the absence and in the presence of thermocline respectively. According to the t-Student test, this difference was significant, with p < 0.001. Phosphate release from sediments was corroborated under hypoxia conditions. ANOVA one way analysis did not show significant spatial differences for any variable. Mean normalize spatial index (MENSI) was developed to compare data from different regions affected by high temporal variability. It proved to be useful to quantify spatial differences. Structure analysis of temporal series was used to scrutinize both chemical and spatial association successfully. Three chemically different zones were determined in the reservoir. This study demonstrated that spatial comparisons by means of marginal statistics may not be an adequate method when high temporal variation is present. In such a case, temporal structure analysis has to be considered.

Down syndrome (DS) is characterised by intellectual disability and is caused by trisomy 21. Apoptosis is a programmed cell death process and is involved in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer. People with DS can develop some traits of Alzheimer disease at an earlier age than subjects without trisomy 21. The leucine zipper, down regulated in cancer 1 (LDOC1) appears to be involved in the apoptotic pathways. The aim of the present work was to detect the presence of intracellular synthesis of LDOC1 protein and LDOC1 mRNA in fibroblast cultures from DS subjects. The western blot shows the presence of LDOC1 protein in fibroblasts of DS subjects but no evidence of LDOC1 protein in fibroblasts of normal subjects. LDOC1 gene mRNA expression is increased in fibroblasts from DS subjects compared to fibroblasts from normal subjects. The data obtained from this study strengthen the hypothesis that the over-expression of LDOC1 gene could play a role in determining the phenotype of individuals with DS but does not exclude that this results from apoptotic mechanisms.

Research has demonstrated beneficial effects of acute exercise on memory for neutral materials, such as word lists of neutral valence/low arousal. However, the impacts of exercise on emotional memory is less understood. Across three laboratory experiments in college students, we tested if acute exercise could enhance both neutral and emotional memory performance, anticipating a greater effect for emotional memory. We examined effects of exercise at varying intensities (Experiment 1: high-intensity; Experiment 2: low- and high-intensity; Experiment 3: moderate-intensity), of diverse modalities (Experiment 1: treadmill jogging; Experiment 2: cycling; Experiment 3: open-skill (racquetball) and closed-skill (treadmill jogging) exercise), and on emotional memory performance assessed at increasing levels of hippocampal dependency (Experiment 1: Y/N recognition task; Experiment 2: paired-associative recognition task; Experiment 3: cued-recall task). We found that, in all experiments, acute exercise did not significantly influence emotional or neutral memory performance relative to sedentary control conditions. However, we observed several noteworthy outcomes indicating that acute exercise may be linked to improvements in memory confidence and accuracy for central aspects of emotional memory stimuli, and that select exercise modalities (e.g. treadmill exercise) may also be associated with increased frequency of memory intrusions.

Glucose potently enhances cognitive functions whether given systemically or directly to the brain. The present experiments examined changes in brain extracellular glucose levels while rats were trained to solve hippocampus-sensitive place or striatum-sensitive response learning tasks for food or water reward. Because there were no task-related differences in glucose responses, the glucose results were pooled across tasks to form combined trained groups. During the first 1-3 min of training for food reward, glucose levels in extracellular fluid (ECF) declined significantly in the hippocampus and striatum; the declines were not seen in untrained, rewarded rats. When trained for water reward, similar decreases were observed in both brain areas, but these findings were less consistent than those seen with food rewards. After the initial declines in ECF glucose levels, glucose increased in most groups, approaching asymptotic levels ∼15-30 min into training. Compared to untrained food controls, training with food reward resulted in significant glucose increases in the hippocampus but not striatum; striatal glucose levels exhibited large increases to food intake in both trained and untrained groups. In rats trained to find water, glucose levels increased significantly above the values seen in untrained rats in both hippocampus and striatum. The decreases in glucose early in training might reflect an increase in brain glucose consumption, perhaps triggering increased brain uptake of glucose from blood, as evident in the increases in glucose later in training. The increased brain uptake of glucose may provide additional neuronal metabolic substrate for metabolism or provide astrocytic substrate for production of glycogen and lactate., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier B.V. Objectives: Nutritional intake during gestation is known to impact health outcomes for progeny. Correlational evidence in humans suggests that increased fruit consumption of pregnant mothers enhances infant cognitive development. Moreover, wild-type Drosophila supplemented with a combination of orange and tomato juice showed robust enhancements in performance on an associative olfactory memory task. The current study aimed to experimentally test the effects of prenatal fruit juice exposure in a non-human, mammalian model of learning and memory., Methods: Across three separate birth cohorts, pregnant rats were given access to diluted tomato and orange juice (N = 2 per cohort), with control rats (N = 2 per cohort) receiving only water, in addition to standard rodent chow, throughout the duration of gestation, ending at parturition. Following weaning, male offspring were tested for learning and memory in a spatial version of the circular water maze and an auditory-cued fear-conditioning task., Results: All pregnant rats increased fluid and food intake over the gestational period. Fruit juice-fed pregnant rats had increased fluid intake compared to control pregnant rats. When testing progeny, there were no effects of prenatal fruit juice on spatial learning, while it appeared to impair learning in fear conditioning relative to controls. However, we measured significant enhancements in both spatial memory and conditioned fear memory in the prenatal fruit-juice group compared to controls. Measures of vigilance, in response to the conditioned cue, were increased in prenatal fruit rats compared to controls, suggesting less generalized, and more adaptive, anxiety behaviours., Discussion: Our results corroborate the human and Drosophila findings of prenatal fruit effects on behaviour, specifically that prenatal fruit juice exposure may be beneficial for early-life memory consolidation in rats., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Wildfires are a major threat to people and property in Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) communities worldwide, but while the patterns of the WUI in North America, Europe and Oceania have been studied before, this is not the case in Latin America. Our goals were to a) map WUI areas in central Argentina, and b) assess wildfire exposure for WUI communities in relation to historic fires, with special emphasis on large fires and estimated burn probability based on an empirical model. We mapped the WUI in the mountains of central Argentina (810,000 ha), after digitizing the location of 276,700 buildings and deriving vegetation maps from satellite imagery. The areas where houses and wildland vegetation intermingle were classified as Intermix WUI (housing density > 6.17 hu/km 2 and wildland vegetation cover > 50%), and the areas where wildland vegetation abuts settlements were classified as Interface WUI (housing density > 6.17 hu/km 2 , wildland vegetation cover < 50%, but within 600 m of a vegetated patch larger than 5 km 2 ). We generated burn probability maps based on historical fire data from 1999 to 2011; as well as from an empirical model of fire frequency. WUI areas occupied 15% of our study area and contained 144,000 buildings (52%). Most WUI area was Intermix WUI, but most WUI buildings were in the Interface WUI. Our findings suggest that central Argentina has a WUI fire problem. WUI areas included most of the buildings exposed to wildfires and most of the buildings located in areas of higher burn probability. Our findings can help focus fire management activities in areas of higher risk, and ultimately provide support for landscape management and planning aimed at reducing wildfire risk in WUI communities., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Down syndrome (DS) is a chromosomal disorder caused by chromosome 21 trisomy and is the most frequent genetic cause of intellectual disability. The gene for the kinesin family member 21A (KIF21A), is a member of the kinesin superfamily involved in the anterograde fast axonal transport. In this study, we have evaluated the possible differential expression of KIF21A mRNA, by qRT-PCR, in peripheral blood leukocytes of DS subjects and it compared with the normal population. In the assumption that changes in KIF21A gene expression levels may affect the axonal transport and the development of the nervous system of subjects with DS. In the present case-control study, KIF21A gene expression was increased in 72.72 % of DS samples compared with normal subjects. This finding suggests that changes in the expression levels of KIF21A in DS subjects may affect the axonal transport and the development of the nervous system.

The spreading dynamic of the 2004 dengue fever outbreak that occurred in Tartagal, Northwestern Argentina, was investigated. A total of 487 suspected dengue cases were recorded and geo-referenced. Maps of daily cases were generated for the 109 days of the outbreak. The epidemic affected the majority of the city within 11 days. The age-distribution of the cases was different from the population age-distribution. The spatio-temporal clustering of the cases was analyzed using Knox test concept. Results of the space and time geo-referencing of the cases showed outbreak spotlights and spreading patterns that could be related to entomologic and epidemiologic factors. An environmental risk prediction model was developed based on a synthetic multi-band image created from LandSat 5 TM satellite image. The potential and limitations of remote sensing data and spatial statistics as landscape epidemiology tools for a dengue surveillance strategy and prevention are discussed.

Chromosomal fragility and other chromosomal abnormalities were frequently observed in subjects with neuropsychiatric disorders, such as fragile X syndrome, autism or schizophrenia, but only for the first one the fragility is accepted to be associated to a specific pathology, so that it is used as a diagnostic marker. In this study the authors analyzed 50 schizophrenic males, searching for the rare fragile sites or other aberrations with the method suitable for fra(X) detection. Chromosomes from schizophrenic patients resulted more fragile than those from normal controls, especially chromosome 9. The authors discuss the implications of a possible association of these data with the aetiopathogenesis of schizophrenic syndrome.
