Since May 2018 till the end of 2021, Mayotte island has been the locus of a major submarine volcanic eruption characterized by the offshore emission of more than 6.5 km$^{3}$ of basanitic magma. The eruption occurred along a WNW–ESE trending submarine ridge on the east flank of the island where, in addition, several seemingly recent phonolitic bodies were also identified close to the island. To define realistic scenarios of magma ascent and potentially predict the style of an upcoming event, it is crucial to have a precise understanding on the plumbing system operating below volcanoes. The putative relationships between basanites emitted by the new volcano and these recent phonolites have been experimentally explored by performing crystallization experiments on a representative basanite over a large range of pressures (up to 400 MPa). The results show that the crystallization of basanite at crustal levels (${\le }$12–15 km) yields a phonolitic residual liquid containing up to 3–4 wt% $\mathrm{H}_{2}\mathrm{O}$ after ${\ge }$65 wt% of an assemblage of olivine$+$plagioclase$+$amphibole$+$clinopyroxene$+$biotite$+$magnetite$+$ilmenite$+$apatite. The final iron content of the residual phonolitic liquids is strongly controlled by the depth/pressure of fractionation. Fe-rich phonolites from the submarine ridge are produced at 6–8 km depth, while a shallower differentiation (${\le }$4–5 km) results in the production of liquids with trachyte–benmoreite affinities. If the fractionation process occurs at depths higher than 8 km, the resulting phonolitic melts are progressively enriched in $\mathrm{SiO}_{2}$–$\mathrm{Al}_{2}\mathrm{O}_{3}$ but depleted in FeO*, ie unlike those erupted. We therefore conclude that phonolitic magma production and storage at Mayotte is a rather shallow process.

Identifying precursory phenomena is central to the short-range assessment and anticipation of volcanic hazards. The chemistry of gases, which may separate from magma at depth, is operationally monitored at many volcanoes worldwide to manage risk. However, owing to the complexity of volcanic degassing, decoding the message of gas geochemistry has proven challenging. Here, we report an approach to restoration of measured volcanic gas compositions that enables tracking of variations in the temperature and/or oxidation state of the source magma. We validate the approach with reference to independent estimates of melt oxidation state obtained by X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy at the iron K-edge. We then apply the method to a global database of high temperature volcanic gases and to extended gas geochemical timeseries at Unzen, Aso, and Asama volcanoes, identifying hitherto unreported but significant changes in magma intensive parameters that preceded or accompanied changes in volcanic activity. Restoration of volcanic gas compositions offers a promising complement to monitoring strategies at active volcanoes, calling for more systematic operational surveillance of redox-sensitive gas species.

We present new H2O and CO2 solubility data in mafic to intermediate alkaline magmas from Fasnia and Garachico volcanoes, Tenerife. H2O- and CO2-saturated experiments were conducted at ${\sim }$50–400 MPa, 1200 °C, and $f$O2 from 2 log units below the NiNiO solid buffer to 3.2 log units above it. Although existing solubility models for alkali-rich mafic magmas broadly describe H2O and CO2 behaviour, associated errors are worthy of consideration since they usually exceed 15–20%. For this reason, we have determined the specific solubility laws of basanitic and phonotephritic melts from the Canary Islands. Results show similar H2O solubilities for both compositions, whereas the basanite can dissolve an average of ${\sim }$45% more CO2 than the phonotephrite. By combining these data, we have established a simple empirical model that allows us to calculate melt inclusion entrapment pressures accurately and, therefore, better understand the inner workings of volcanic oceanic islands. Today, volcanic sulfur emissions into the atmosphere are measured spectroscopically from the ground, air and space. For eruptions prior to the satellite era, two main sulfur proxies are used, the rock and ice core records, as illustrated by Peccia et al. (2023, https://doi.org/10.1029/2023gl103334). The first approach is based on calculations of the sulfur content of the magma, while the second uses traces of sulfur deposited in ice. Both approaches have their limitations. For glaciochemistry, the volcano responsible for a sulfur anomaly is often unknown and the atmospheric pathway by which the sulfur reached the ice uncertain. The petrologic method relies, too, on uncertain estimates of eruption size and a number of geochemical assumptions that are hard to verify. A deeper knowledge of processes occurring both within magma bodies prior to eruption, and within volcanic plumes in the atmosphere is needed to further our understanding of the impacts of volcanism on climate. Plain Language Summary: Volcanic emissions of sulfur gases during large eruptions can change the global climate. Today, advanced spectroscopic tools allow us to measure sulfur from the ground, air and space. But to understand the impacts of volcanic activity on climate back through history we need to estimate volcanic sulfur releases in other ways. The behavior of Fe3+ during mantle partial melting strongly influences the oxidation state of the resulting magmas, with implications for the evolution of the atmosphere's oxidation state. Here, we challenge a prevailing view that low‐degree partial melts are more oxidized due to the incompatible behavior of Fe3+. Our study is based on measurements of Fe3+/∑Fe along with major, minor, trace and volatile elements in olivine‐ and plagioclase‐hosted melt inclusions of CO2 undersaturated mantle melts in South West Indian Ridge lava. These inclusions record minimum entrapment pressures equivalent to depths up to 10 km below the seafloor, record magma ascent rates of 0.03–0.19 m/s, and display exceptionally high CO2/Ba, CO2/Rb, and CO2/Nb ratios, indicative of a CO2‐rich mantle source. Accounting for fractional crystallization, we find a uniform melt oxidation state (with an Fe3+/ΣFe at 0.140 ± 0.005 at MgO = 10 wt.%) that displays no systematic variation with major, minor, volatile or trace element contents, thus providing no evidence for a relationship between the degree of partial melting and Fe3+/ΣFe. This can be explained by efficient buffering of Fe3+/∑Fe and fO2 of mid‐ocean ridge basalt melts by their surrounding mantle and/or a decrease in the bulk peridotite‐melt Fe2O3 partition coefficient with increasing partial melting. We conclude that changes in the Earth's upper mantle temperature over geological time need not have affected the oxidation state of volcanic products or of the atmosphere.
