Abstract

Copper metal nanoparticles (Nps) have received increasing interest during the last years due to their potential applications in several fields of science and technology. Their optical properties depend on the characteristics of the dielectric function of the metal, their size, and the type of environment. The contribution of free and bound electrons on the dielectric function of copper Nps is analyzed as well as their influence on its plasmonic properties. The contribution of free electrons is corrected for particle size under 10 nm, introducing a term inversely proportional to the particle's radius in the damping constant. For bound electron contribution, interband transitions from the d-band to the conduction band are considered. For particles with sizes below 2 nm, the larger spacing between electronic energy levels must be taken into account by making the electronic density of states in the conduction band size-dependent. Considering these specific modifications, optical parameters and band energy values could be determined by fitting the bulk complex dielectric function. The obtained values were coefficient for bound electron contribution Kbulk = 2 × 1024, gap energy Eg = 1.95 eV, Fermi energy EF = 2.15 eV, and bound electrons damping constant γb = 1.15 × 1014 Hz. Based on the dielectric function determined in this way, experimental extinction spectra of colloid suspensions generated by ultrafast laser ablation of a solid copper target in liquids was fitted using the Drude-interband model and Mie's theory. Depending on the experimental conditions and liquid medium, the particles in the suspension may have nanometric or subnanometric core size and may be capped with a shell of oxide. From the fitting, it was possible to determine the structure and size distribution of spherical bare core and core-shell copper Nps in the nanometer-subnanometer size range. These results were compared with those obtained by standard microscopy techniques such as AFM and HRTEM. There is a very good agreement between the three techniques, showing that optical extinction spectroscopy (OES) is a good complementary technique to standard high resolution electron microscopy and AFM for sizing spherical nanometric-subnanometric Nps. OES has also the advantage of a very good measurement statistics, due to the large number of probed particles across the sample cell. Abstract

Studies of fragmentation process of gold nanoparticles (Nps) in deionized water after generation by femtosecond laser ablation were performed. To analyze the fragmentation process, direct IR ultrafast pulses or super-continuum (SC) radiation focused in the colloidal solution were used in separate steps. IR pulses and SC generated externally in a sapphire crystal or directly inside the water were applied under low fluence regime. In the latter cases, to evaluate the effect on fragmentation of the different spectral bands present in the SC, we have determined different efficiency regions characterized by means of the product between the spectral response and the optical extinction spectrum corresponding to the initial Nps solution. From the analysis of this product function, we can conclude that the main fragmentation mechanism is due to linear absorption in the visible region. Likewise, the SC generated in water resulted more efficient than the SC obtained externally by a sapphire crystal. This fact may be attributed to the blue broadening of the water SC spectrum (as compared with the sapphire SC) due to the large intensity used for its generation. Transmission electron microscopy and small angle x-ray scattering measurements support the results found from optical extinction spectroscopy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In recent papers, it has been theoretically shown that by using dual-period wire gratings, it is possible to control the relative efficiencies of the diffracted orders, regardless of the wires’ material, incident polarization and wavelength. In this Letter, we experimentally demonstrate, for the first time, that by appropriately choosing the geometrical parameters of a nanometric periodic structure, it is possible to control the optical response in the visible range. We show examples of nanostructures designed to cancel out or to intensify a particular diffraction order. Such nanostructures allow a broad control over the directionality and the intensity of the diffracted light, which makes them useful for applications such as highly directional optical nanoantennas and photonic multiplexers.

20. Fotofísica de colorantes polimetínicos : estudio del DTCI

Abstract

Continuando con el estudio de colorantes polimetínicos, se analizan las propiedades fotofísicas y los parámetros espectroscópicos del ioduro de 3-3'- dictiltiacarbocianina (DTCI). Esta molécula es utilizada en Iáseres de colorantes y, al igual que otras cianinas, presenta una dinámica de isomerización reversible con un isómero cuya vida media es aproximadamente de 10 ms. a temperatura ambiente. Los espectros de absorción de la forma estable y del isómero son semejantes y se superponen en la misma región espectral. A su vez, los espectros de fluorescencia no presentan variaciones con la energía y la longitud de onda de excitación. La obtención de información y la determinación de parámetros presenta, en estos casos, un alto grado de dificultad. Hemos desarrollado una combinación de técnicas láser que involucran métodos de detección y de análisis por absorción y fluorescencia en función de la potencia de excitación, que permite estudiar el comportamiento relativo de la especie fotoisomérica respecto de la normal. Se discute la dinámica de desactivación del primer singlete excitado del fotoisómero, su espectro de absorción y valores de diversos parámetros cinéticos de esta especie, tales como eficiencias cuánticas de isomerización, eficiencia cuántica de fluorescencia y sección eficaz de absorción del fotoisómero Fil: Di Paolo, . Abstract

Fueron desarrolladas un conjunto de técnicas de fluorescencia y de absorción para la determinación de parámetros foto físicos de cianinas fotoisomerizables. La aplicación de estas técnicas, tales como fluorescencia saturada, fluorescencia por doble excitación y absorción en función de la temperatura al caso específico del DODCI, permitió estudiar particularmente el estado excitado del fotoisómero y sus procesos de decaimiento. Se obtuvieron la eficiencia de fluorescencia y el tiempo de vida del fotoisómero en función de la temperatura. Se determinó la energía de activación y el factor pre-exponencial de los procesos de decaimiento no radiactivos. 22. Photophysical characterization of a photochromic system: The case of merocyanine 540

Abstract

The fluorescence emission of merocyanine 540 (MC540) in 95% ethanol was studied under continuous irradiation. Fluorescence spectra from excited states of both normal (N) and photoisomeric (P) species are identical. The laser fluence dependence of the fluorescence intensity is interpreted on the basis of a photochromic system involving N and P ground states and first excited singlet states. Common flash photolysis equations are generalized in order to include a photoequilibrium between isomers. The emission data are used together with previous flash photolysis and optoacoustic results to obtain P fluorescence and photoisomerization quantum yields as 0.07 ± 0.02 and 0.20 ± 0.04, respectively, P absorption cross section at the maximum (560 nm) as 4.74 × 10-16 cm2 (125 × 103 M-1·cm-1), and the energy difference between the ground states as 165 kJ·mol-1. Internal conversion, which can take place as a direct process or through a twisted state, is the main deactivation pathway for excited singlet P. © 1990 American Chemical Society. Fil:Aramendía, P.F. Abstract

This open access book proposes an in-depth study on a vast range of issues connected to the regulation of Novel Foods in the European Union, pursuing an interdisciplinary approach and thus providing a comprehensive picture of this complex topic. Particular attention is paid not only to the current EU legislative framework, its positive innovations, unsolved problems and limits, but also to food safety issues and the potential impact of Novel Foods on sustainability and food security. In addition, the book focuses on a particular category of Novel Foods: insects for human consumption. These products recently gained momentum after the first EU Commission authorisation of dried yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor)in 2021. The book contributes to the lively public debate following this long-awaited authorisation by examining the legal issues arising from the application of the Novel Foods Regulation to these peculiar new foods; the EFSA risk assessment evaluations; the consumers’ perceptions and potential future of insect-based products’ market in the EU. By providing such an extensive analysis, including recent developments and future prospects, the book represents a valuable tool for students and academics, but also institutions and public authorities, helping them understanding the various challenges related to Novel Foods and edible insects. Furthermore, it seeks to promote an informed debate in order to find innovative solutions to pressing problems concerning how to feed the world of tomorrow.

31. Population mechanisms in visible carbon monoxide pulsed lasers

Abstract

The population mechanism in the Ångstrom system of a CO pulsed laser are studied through analysis of the rotational intensities distribution of the emitted bands. The observed spectra were simulated by using a simple excitation model. The results suggest that, apart from electron impact, there is a strong radiative contribution of the VUV 4^+ system to the gain of the visible emission through a selective depletion of the lower laser level.

32. Cascade population mechanism in nitrogen lasers

Abstract

The way in which a cascade mechanism from the C^3∏u state affects the population of the υ = 0 level of the B^3∏g state in a N_2 laser is studied. The spectra of the 0–1 IR laser band are fit by using simple theoretical calculations that account for the population of the three laser levels involved, C^3∏u, B^3∏g, and A^3∑u+ and two excitation mechanisms, direct electron impact and cascade. The inhibition of the 0–0 UV laser band showed a strong influence on the 0–1 IR laser band output.

33. Estereogramas de objetos en movimiento mediante 'Speckle' modulado

Abstract

La holografía es una técnica corrientemente utilizada en el registro de imágenes tridimensionales de objetos que se encuentran tanto en reposo como en movimiento. Sin embargo, la realización de estereogramas por técnicas de Speckle, como en el propuesto en este trabajo, está justificada al tener en consideración el exceso de información normalmente presente en holografía, así como las limitaciones de la visión. La utilización de un láser de colorante pulsado coherente y de energía suficiente permite la obtención de estereograma de objetos en movimiento. El par estereográfico es logrado al registrar simultáneamente dos perspectivas levemente diferentes sobre una película. Mediante un sistema de polarizadores adecuadamente colocados y una pupila compuesta por dos sectores circulares se logra por una imágen formada por un registro de speckle modulados, que al ser iluminada en la reconstrucción, conservan una selectividad angular que permite visualizar en forma independiente ambas perspectivas de la imágen real Fil: Bolognini, N.. Abstract

The essay starts with a comparison between the different definitions of the concept of home restaurant proposed by experts, suppliers, home cookers, on-line platforms, and the one provided by a bill drafted during the XVII legislature. The Author describes the activity of those who offer such kind of service in the market, proposing some reflections on the nature of such activity, on the necessity of ensuring food’s health standards, on consumer’s health and wealth, on the protection of competitors professional restaurant’s cookers (if they can be considered as such), on the mechanisms through which demand and offer match together through on-line platforms, social networks or apps. These issues are investigated also through a constant reference to frequent praxis, interpretations and administrative provisions provided by the Ministry of the Economic Development, in order to underlines pro and cons of the Bill drafted by the Government. At the same time, the essay offers also some comparative insights on the regulatory models provided (or voluntary not) by other legal systems.

Abstract

Questo contributo offre un breve commento all'articolo 56 della Costituzione italiana, avente ad oggetto la Camera dei Deputati, la sua natura elettiva, i principi e le regole per la sua composizione. Viene preso in esame il testo costituzionale del 1948 ed il significato delle elezioni democratiche; il rapporto fra eletti ed elettori e le revisioni costituzionali del 1963 e del 2001; il problema della forza prescrittiva dell'articolo 56: l'esigenza di adattamento della Costituzione all'evoluzione del quadro politico; l'articolo 56 della Costituzione come limite per il legislatore in materia elettorale: il ruolo della magistratura e della Corte costituzionale.

46. Photothermal characterization and stability analysis of polymeric dye lasers.

Abstract

The millisecond heat dissipation of pump energy in polymeric, solid-state dye lasers has been studied with photothermal deflection spectroscopy (PTDS) to determine the contribution of that process to photodegradation of the active material. The samples were solutions of Rhodamine 6G in 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate copolymerized with various amounts of methyl methacrylate or ethylene glycol dimethylacrylate to change the microstructure properties of the matrix. Values of the thermal diffusivity measured with PTDS were in the range 0.6-1.1 x 10(-3) cm(2) s(-1) for all the compositions studied here. A comparison of these values with previous optical data on lasing efficiency and photostability for the same samples indicates that the macroscopic rate of thermal diffusion is not the key factor that limits the efficiency and stability of these lasers, at least for low pump repetition rates (<1 Hz).
