In this research, the Omicron variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus was simulated and exposed to electron radiation with up to 20 keV energy. Absorbed energy was measured for spike protein, nucleocapsid protein, and envelope of the virus. Simulations were performed by Geant4-DNA in a water environment at temperature of 20 °C and pressure of 1 atm. Since the viral RNA is kept inside the nucleocapsid protein, damage to this area could destroy the viral RNA strand and create an inactive virus. Our findings showed that electron beams with an energy of 2.5 keV could cause a maximum absorption dose and consequently maximum damage to the nucleocapsid and effectively be used for inactivation virus.

Sulfate is an important anion in natural waters, and its excessive concentration can be harmful. Therefore, in this study, the efficiency of sulfate removal using nanoclay montmorillonite (adsorbent) from water was investigated by determining the effect of adsorbent concentration, pH, time, and temperature to determine the optimal conditions. The sulfate adsorption isotherms were also examined. The highest sulfate removal was achieved at a concentration of 1 g/l of nanoclay montmorillonite, resulting in 4.47 mg/g or 23% removal, at pH 3 with 2.87 mg/g or 27% removal, at a time of 90 minutes with 2.15 mg/g or 21% removal, and at a temperature of 25°C with 3.54 mg/g or 35% removal. Thermodynamic constants indicated that sulfate adsorption on the adsorbent surfaces is endothermic and spontaneous. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model provided a better fit to the time data, indicating chemical adsorption of sulfate. Among the isotherm equations, the Langmuir equation showed a better fit compared to Freundlich, indicating monolayer adsorption surfaces. Furthermore, the maximum adsorption capacity of nanoclay montmorillonite for sulfate (SO4˭-S) was found to be 9.7 mg/g. SEM-EDX analysis also revealed surface adsorption of sulfur and changes in the surface. Therefore, this nanoclay was effective in removing sulfate from water.

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the impact of two different aerobic exercise programs on the Body Mass Index (BMI) and progranulin (PGRN) levels of overweight or obese female students. Methods: In this quasi-experimental study, 36 overweight or obese female students from Kashan University of Medical Sciences and Islamic Azad University volunteered to participate. They were randomly divided into three groups: two groups underwent progressively increasing interval or continuous aerobic exercise programs, while the third group served as a control. The exercise programs lasted for 8 consecutive weeks, with blood samples collected before and after the intervention. Progranulin levels were measured using the ELISA technique with Human PGRN, and BMI was assessed at the beginning and end of the program. Results: The results of a one-way ANOVA test showed a significant decrease in progranulin levels (P=0.00) and BMI in both exercise groups compared to the control group (P=0.029).Conclusion: Both interval and continuous aerobic exercise programs were effective in reducing circulating progranulin levels and BMI in overweight or obese female college students. The exercise interventions led to a significant decrease in both variables. Further research is warranted to explore the effects of different aerobic exercise protocols on BMI and progranulin levels in normal adults.

The management of wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and the assessment of uncertainty in its design are crucial from an environmental engineering perspective. One of the key mechanisms in WWTP operation is activated sludge, which is related to the biological oxygen demand (BOD) parameter. In the modeling of BOD, the conventional approach utilizing ordinary differential equations (ODEs) fails to incorporate the stochastic nature of this parameter, leading to a considerable level of uncertainty in the design of WWTP. To address this issue, this study proposes a stochastic model that utilizes stochastic differential equations (SDEs) instead of ODE to simulate BOD activities of microorganisms and wastewater flow rate (Q). The SDEs and integral It̂o are solved using the Euler–Maruyama method for a period of 15 sequential days and the timespan of 2019–2020 for a WWTP in Tabriz City. SDE improves the design of WWTP facilities by identifying uncertainties and enhancing reliability. This, in turn, increases the reliability of the technical structures within the WWTP and improves the performance of its biological system. By considering the randomness of the problem, the proposed method significantly improves the results, with an enhancement of 11.47 and 10.11% for the BOD and Q models, respectively. HIGHLIGHTS This study suggests using stochastic differential equations (SDEs) and the Euler–Maruyama method instead of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) to model BOD and Q in WWTP design, addressing uncertainty.; A 15-day simulation was conducted to evaluate the variations of BOD and Q pollution parameters in the biological section of WWTP for the first time.;

UNLABELLED: This study introduced the novel concept of Centeredness, a measure of the emotional atmosphere of the family of origin and a target adult individuals perception of feeling safe, accepted, and supported from childhood primary caregivers and other family members. This study developed a Centeredness scale for adult respondents and tested hypotheses that higher levels of overall Centeredness would predict lower levels of depression and anxiety symptoms; suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs); and aggressive behavior; and higher levels of life satisfaction. Predictive effects of Centeredness were compared against attachment-related anxiety and avoidance, and adverse and benevolent childhood experiences (ACEs and BCEs). Participants were recruited via the Prolific-Academic (Pro-A) survey panel into two large independent samples of US young adults aged 19-35 years [Sample 1 (test sample), N = 548, 53.5% female, 2.2% gender non-conforming, 68.3% White, recruited before the pandemic; Sample 2 (replication sample), N = 1,198, 56.2% female, 2.3% gender non-conforming, 66.4% White; recruited during the pandemic]. Participants completed the novel Centeredness scale, which showed strong psychometric properties, and standardized, publicly available assessments of childhood experiences and mental health outcomes. Centeredness was the only variable that significantly predicted each mental health outcome across both samples. BCEs predicted all outcomes except aggressive behavior in the test sample. Centeredness and BCEs were also the only two variables that significantly predicted a dimensional mental health composite in both samples. Neither attachment-related anxiety and avoidance nor ACEs were as broadly predictive. The Centeredness scale assesses emotional aspects of childhood family relationships with individuals of diverse backgrounds and family compositions. Clinical and cultural implications are discussed. Syngas- to- Olefins ,Fischer-Tropsch catalysts ,Catalyst selectivity ,unsupported catalysts ,Supported catalyst ,Technology - Abstract
Light olefins are critical chemical materials with high global demand. The syngas-to-olefins (STO) process offers a promising pathway for light olefin production due to the versatility of syngas production technologies from various energy sources. However, achieving high carbon monoxide (CO) conversion and selectivity for olefins remains a challenge in catalytic development. This review categorizes STO catalysts into conventional Fischer-Tropsch catalysts, including unsupported and supported metal-based catalysts (with supports such as carbon, graphene, graphene oxide, zeolites, and metal oxides), as well as bifunctional, hybrid, and emerging core@shell structured catalysts. Another type of catalyst is core@shell structure catalyst, which is a developing method widely used for FT reactions. The performance of these catalysts is influenced by their materials, chemical compositions, operating conditions, and synthesis techniques. Unsupported catalysts, especially Fe-based and Co-based, exhibit high CO conversion but face issues like rapid deactivation and complex processing requirements. Supported catalysts enhance surface area, metal dispersion, and stability, with promoters such as Na, Mg, K, Mn, Zn, V, Zr, and Cu oxides improving catalytic activity through better CO adsorption and bond modulation. Zeolites, due to their acidic properties, significantly impact reactant adsorption and activation. Catalyst preparation methods, including impregnation, co-precipitation, sol-gel, and hydrothermal synthesis, alongside post-synthesis treatments like calcination and reduction, critically affect catalyst performance. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the light olefin production from syngas, detailing the roles of various catalysts and the impact of material types, operating conditions, and synthesis techniques on catalyst activity, and selectivity. The insights aim to guide future research and development towards more efficient and sustainable light olefin production processes.

Objective To evaluate longitudinal changes in peripapillary vessel density (VD) following coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) using optical coherence tomography angiography. Methods As part of a prospective longitudinal observational study, we studied healthy individuals with a history of mild COVID-19 confirmed via real-time polymerase chain reaction. After recovery, we used the Optovue RTVue XR Avanti machine to perform optic nerve head (ONH) imaging. We also assessed the VD of all vessels and of small vessels in the disc and the radial peripapillary capillary (RPC) network at 1 and 3 months post-recovery. Results We included 17 patients (34 eyes; mean age: 36.9 ± 10.2 years, range: 24–62 years) who had recovered from COVID-19. No changes were observed in the ONH parameters. However, there was a noticeable trend of increased small vessel VD values in the RPC. These increases were significant for the peripapillary whole, superior hemifield, inferior-temporal, temporal-superior, and superior-temporal small vessels. Moreover, the evaluation of all vessel VD values in the RPC revealed a significant decrease in the inside disc and a significant increase in a grid-based inferior region. Conclusion COVID-19 may affect VD of the RPC in the ONH, and should be considered in ONH evaluations.

Spiking Neural Networks (SNN) are quickly gaining traction as a viable alternative to Deep Neural Networks (DNN). In comparison to DNNs, SNNs are more computationally powerful and provide superior energy efficiency. SNNs, while exciting at first appearance, contain security-sensitive assets (e.g., neuron threshold voltage) and vulnerabilities (e.g., sensitivity of classification accuracy to neuron threshold voltage change) that adversaries can exploit. We investigate global fault injection attacks by employing external power supplies and laser-induced local power glitches to corrupt crucial training parameters such as spike amplitude and neuron's membrane threshold potential on SNNs developed using common analog neurons. We also evaluate the impact of power-based attacks on individual SNN layers for 0% (i.e., no attack) to 100% (i.e., whole layer under attack). We investigate the impact of the attacks on digit classification tasks and find that in the worst-case scenario, classification accuracy is reduced by 85.65%. We also propose defenses e.g., a robust current driver design that is immune to power-oriented attacks, improved circuit sizing of neuron components to reduce/recover the adversarial accuracy degradation at the cost of negligible area and 25% power overhead. We also present a dummy neuron-based voltage fault injection detection system with 1% power and area overhead., Comment: Design, Automation and Test in Europe Conference (DATE) 2022

Background: Diabetes is known to be linked with a high risk of liver stiffness in non-alcoholic fatty liver patients. Previous studies have faced challenges in examining the association between prediabetes and liver stiffness. This study aimed to compare liver fibrosis in diabetes and prediabetes patients. Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on patients with diabetes and prediabetes who were referred to Imam Khomeini Hospital in Ahvaz from March 2022 to March 2023. The study aimed to clear the relationship between liver stiffness and age, gender, BMI, AST, ALT, ALKP, Bilirubin, and the type of treatment. The normality of quantitative variables was checked using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. The chi-square test examined two qualitative variables with more than two levels. Results: Out of the total participants, 53 people (63.9%) had diabetes, while 30 people (36.1%) had prediabetes. There was a significant difference between the mean severity of liver fibrosis in diabetic and pre-diabetic patients (P=0.014). The frequency of liver stiffness in all levels except in the group with mild or no fibrosis (F0-F1) was higher in diabetic than pre-diabetic patients. In both diabetes and prediabetes groups, there was no significant relationship between gender, age, BMI, ALT, and ALKP with liver fibrosis. However, there was a significant direct relationship between HbA1C% and liver fibrosis (P≥0.003) in both groups. In diabetic patients, a significant relationship between FBS and liver fibrosis was observed (P=0.001). In pre-diabetic patients, significant direct relationship was seen between the severity of liver fibrosis and AST levels (P=0.026). Conclusion: Diabetic patients showed a higher severity of liver fibrosis compared to pre-diabetic patients. No statistically significant relationship was seen between liver fibrosis and age, sex, body mass index, ALT, and ALKP in both groups. Additionally, both diabetes and prediabetes groups showed significant relationship between liver fibrosis and HbA1C (P≥0.003). Prediabetes was also found to be associated with an elevated risk of liver fibrosis.

Abstract Antipsychotic drugs are the first line of treatment in schizophrenia; although antipsychotic responses indicate a wide interindividual variety in patients with schizophrenia. This study aimed to investigate the association between four polymorphisms in DRD2, DRD4 and COMT genes and their gene-gene interactions with antipsychotic treatment response in patients with schizophrenia. A total of 101 patients with schizophrenia were recruited and stratified in treatment responder and treatment resistant groups based on the published criteria of resistant to treatment using PANSS. Clinical and demographic factors were analyzed. Genomic DNA was extracted from whole blood and genotyping for the four polymorphisms were done by ARMS-PCR, PCR-RFLP and gap-PCR. Gene-gene interactions were analyzed by logistic regression. In case of DRD2 A-241G, G allele was significantly associated with resistant to treatment. Regarding DRD4 120-bp duplication, 240/240 genotype was significantly associated with resistant to treatment comparing to other genotypes in a dominant model. The genotype combination of DRD4 240/240 and COMT Val/Val was significantly associated with treatment resistant. Among DRD2 AA genotype, COMT met allele carriers which also had a 120 bp allele of DRD4 had a significantly better response to antipsychotics. Moreover, analysis of clinical and demographic factors demonstrated a significantly longer duration of hospitalization and higher chlorpromazine-equivalent daily dose in resistant to treatment patients. Discovering the polymorphisms which effect treatment response to antipsychotics will provide the possibility of genetic screening before starting an antipsychotic treatment which enhances the chance of responding to antipsychotics and decreases drugs side effects and costs.

Background and purpose: Many obese people have different psychological symptoms such as anxiety, depression, emotional regulation problems, etc., food addiction is also another psychological problem associated with obesity. In this research, for the first time, we investigated the effect of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) treatment on anxiety, depression, difficulty in emotional regulation, and food addiction in obese people. Materials and methods: In this clinical trial, 40 obese women were selected from urban health centers in Kashan, 2018. They were recruited using purposive convenience sampling. They were then randomly divided into an intervention group (MBSR, n=20) or a control group (educational session without any treatment, n=20). The MBSR was implemented according to the Kabat Ziin protocol during weekly sessions of 90-minute for eight weeks. The participants were evaluated at pre-test, post-test and three-month follow-up using the anxiety, stress, depression scale (DASS-21), difficulty in emotion regulation scale (DERS), and the Yale food addiction scale (YFAS). Data analysis was performed applying repeated measures ANOVA in SPSS16. Results: The intervention group was found with a significant reduction in the levels of anxiety (P0.05). Conclusion: Mindfulness-based stress reduction treatment could be considered as a part of comprehensive medical care for obese people. (Clinical Trials Registry Number: IRCT20190804044436N1)

Due to the necessity of resistance training for athletes conditioning, loading patterns in order to improve training outcomes have received more attention in recent decades. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to assess the impact of 8-week resistance training performed with double pyramid (DP) and reverse step (RS) systems on some physical fitness components of elite female athletes. 30 young female handball players are randomly assigned to the three groups of DP (age: 17.43±1.63 year, weight: 70.28±10.14 kg, fat percentage: 15.60±1.17), RS (age: 17.13±1.32 year, weight: 67.80±7.78 kg, fat percentage: 15.40±1.69), and control groups (age: 17.33±1.71 year, weight: 61.04±6.61 kg, fat percentage: 16.50±1.43). Training programs was performed for an eight-week, 3 sessions per week with loading pattern of DP or RS. Measurements including fat percentage, anaerobic power (RAST), agility (Illinois), Speed (45 meter sprint), strength (1RM), and muscle endurance (60% 1RM) are taken before and after the training course. After the training period, DP and RS groups had significant effects on the mean power, upper and lower body muscular endurance, fat percentage, agility and speed (p lt;0.05). Also, DP showed a significantly more increase in upper body strength compared to RS groups and RS showed a significantly more increase in lower body strength compared to DP groups (p lt;0.05). Also, comparison of DP and RS groups showed a significant difference in lower and upper body muscle endurance between the two groups (P lt;0.05); While, there was not a significant difference in anaerobic power, upper and lower body strength, fat percentage, speed, and agility tests between training groups. DP resistance training appears that to have more impact in improving anaerobic power, upper body strength and speed. While, RS ones showed a greater effect on increasing the lower body strength, muscular endurance, agility and fat percentage of female handball players.

Background: Surgery and radiotherapy are two main modalities of breast cancer treatment. However, surgery affects the tumor microenvironment negatively and promotes the growth of possible malignant cells remaining in the tumor bed. Objective: The present study aimed to investigate the effects of intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) on the tumor microenvironment. Therefore, the effect of surgical wound fluid (WF), collected from operated and irradiated patients on the growth and motility of a breast cancer cell line (MCF-7) was assessed. Material and Methods: In this experimental study, preoperative blood serum (PS) and secreted WF from 18 patients who underwent breast-conserving surgery (IORT-) and 19 patients who received IORT following surgery (IORT+) were collected. The samples were purified and added to MCF-7 cultures. Two groups of the cells were treated with and without fetal bovine serum (FBS) and used as positive and negative controls. Applying 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) and scratch wound healing assays, the growth and motility of MCF-7 cells were measured. Results: Cell growth of the cells receiving WF from IORT+ patients (WF+) was statistically higher than the corresponding values of the cells received PS or WF from IORT- patients (WF-) (P

Abstract Investigating long-term potentiation (LTP) in disease models provides essential mechanistic insight into synaptic dysfunction and relevant behavioral changes in many neuropsychiatric and neurological diseases. Toxoplasma (T) gondii is an intracellular parasite causing bizarre changes in host’s mind including losing inherent fear of life-threatening situations. We examined hippocampal-dependent behavior as well as in vivo short- and long-term synaptic plasticity (STP and LTP) in rats with latent toxoplasmosis. Rats were infected by T. gondii cysts. Existence of REP-529 genomic sequence of the parasite in the brain was detected by RT-qPCR. Four and eight weeks after infection, spatial, and inhibitory memories of rats were assessed by Morris water maze and shuttle box tests, respectively. Eight weeks after infection, STP was assessed in dentate gyrus (DG) and CA1 by double pulse stimulation of perforant pathway and Shaffer collaterals, respectively. High frequency stimulation (HFS) was applied to induce LTP in entorhinal cortex-DG (400 Hz), and CA3-CA1 (200 Hz) synapses. T. gondii infection retarded spatial learning and memory performance at eight weeks post-infection period, whereas inhibitory memory was not changed. Unlike uninfected rats that normally showed paired-pulse depression, the infected rats developed paired-pulse facilitation, indicating an inhibitory synaptic network disruption. T. gondii-infected rats displayed strengthened LTP of both CA1-pyramidal and DG-granule cell population spikes. These data indicate that T. gondii disrupts inhibition/excitation balance and causes bizarre changes to the post-synaptic neuronal excitability, which may ultimately contribute to the abnormal behavior of the infected host.

Apoptosis ,Colon cancer ,Iron oxide ,Papaverine ,Chemistry ,QD1-999 - Abstract
Treating chemoresistant and metastatic colon cancers faces major difficulties. Due to their high biocompatibility and magnetic property, Iron oxide nanoparticles have gained attention for the delivery of anticancer compounds. Papaverine is an alkaloid from opium that has shown anticancer properties on several cancer cells. Therefore, in this work, Iron oxide nanoparticles were conjugated with Papaverine through glucose (Glu) functionalization, and the anticancer effect of Fe3O4@Glu-Papaverine on colon cancer cells was investigated. Characterization of the synthesized NPs was confirmed by fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-Ray diffraction analysis (XRD), energy dispersive spectroscopy-mapping (EDS-Mapping), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and zeta potential analysis. The antiproliferative effect of the nanoparticles on colon cancer cells (HT29 cell line) and normal human cells (HFF-19 cell line) was studied by (3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5 diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) (MTT) assay at 24 h. The apoptogenic property and cell cycle of nanoparticle treated cells were studied by flow cytometry by Annexin V and PI Apoptosis method. The Real-time polymerase chain reaction was used to investigate the effect of Fe3O4@Glu-Papaverine on the expression of the CASP8 and GAS6-AS1 genes by 2-ΔΔCT method. Physicochemical characterization revealed that the particles were synthesized properly, without impurities, and were in the size range of 20 to 50 nm. Also, the magnetic saturation was measured 50 emu/g. The particles were considerably more toxic for cancer cells than normal cells with IC50 values of 187 and 356 µg/mL, respectively. An increased level of cell cycle arrest at the sub-G1 phase was observed and the frequency of apoptotic cells was increased from 0.89 % to 87.2 %. Also, treating cancer cells with the nanoparticles significantly induced the CASP8 gene (3.5 folds) while attenuated the GAS6-AS1 gene by 0.54 folds. This study represents Fe3O4@Glu-Papaverine NPs as a potent anticancer compound against colon cancer cells.

IntroductionDuring the COVID-19 pandemic, many changes occurred in various cultural, social, and economic fields, leading to the creation of psychological effects, especially anxiety, in the community. Fear and anxiety about emerging diseases (COVID-19) and less participation in preventive behaviors reduce individual resistance and ultimately lower one’s quality of life. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the relationship between health literacy and generalized anxiety disorder during the COVID-19 pandemic in Khuzestan province, Iran.MethodsThis was a descriptive-analytical (cross-sectional) study conducted among participants aged 18–65 in Khuzestan province during the years 2020–2021 through online sampling. Due to the prevalence of COVID-19 and the impossibility of face-to-face communication, the questionnaire was designed on the Porseline Survey website and the questionnaire link was provided to participants through WhatsApp and Telegram. The data collection tool includes the Iranian Health Literacy Questionnaire, which includes 33 items, and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 scale, which has 7 items based on a Likert scale. Data analysis was performed using STATA14 software and descriptive and analytical statistical tests at a significant level less than 0.05.ResultsThe mean (standard deviation) score for health literacy was 52.9 ± 9.3 and for generalized anxiety disorder was 5.2 ± 3.1. A significant negative correlation was found between the mean of anxiety disorder and health literacy (p

Computer Science - Hardware Architecture - Abstract
In-memory computing (IMC) can eliminate the data movement between processor and memory which is a barrier to the energy-efficiency and performance in Von-Neumann computing. Resistive RAM (RRAM) is one of the promising devices for IMC applications (e.g. integer and Floating Point (FP) operations and random logic implementation) due to low power consumption, fast operation, and small footprint in crossbar architecture. In this paper, we propose FAME, a pipelined FP arithmetic (adder/subtractor) using RRAM crossbar based IMC. A novel shift circuitry is proposed to lower the shift overhead during FP operations. Since 96% of the RRAMs used in our architecture are in High Resistance State (HRS), we propose two approaches namely Shift-At-The-Output (SATO) and Force To VDD (FTV) (ground (FTG)) to mitigate Stuck-at-1 (SA1) failures. In both techniques, the fault-free RRAMs are exploited to perform the computation by using an extra clock cycle. Although performance degrades by 50%, SATO can handle 50% of the faults whereas FTV can handle 99% of the faults in the RRAM-based compute array at low power and area overhead. Simulation results show that the proposed single precision FP adder consumes 335 pJ and 322 pJ for NAND-NAND and NOR-NOR based implementations, respectively. The area overheads of SATO and FTV are 28.5% and 9.5%, respectively.

Computer Science - Hardware Architecture - Abstract
In-memory computing architectures provide a much needed solution to energy-efficiency barriers posed by Von-Neumann computing due to the movement of data between the processor and the memory. Functions implemented in such in-memory architectures are often proprietary and constitute confidential Intellectual Property. Our studies indicate that IMCs implemented using RRAM are susceptible to Side Channel Attack. Unlike conventional SCAs that are aimed to leak private keys from cryptographic implementations, SCARE can reveal the sensitive IP implemented within the memory. Therefore, the adversary does not need to perform invasive Reverse Engineering to unlock the functionality. We demonstrate SCARE by taking recent IMC architectures such as DCIM and MAGIC as test cases. Simulation results indicate that AND, OR, and NOR gates (building blocks of complex functions) yield distinct power and timing signatures based on the number of inputs making them vulnerable to SCA. Although process variations can obfuscate the signatures due to significant overlap, we show that the adversary can use statistical modeling and analysis to identify the structure of the implemented function. SCARE can find the implemented IP by testing a limited number of patterns. For example, the proposed technique reduces the number of patterns by 64% compared to a brute force attack for a+bc function. Additionally, analysis shows improvement in SCAREs detection model due to adversarial change in supply voltage for both DCIM and MAGIC. We also propose countermeasures such as redundant inputs and expansion of literals. Redundant inputs can mask the IP with 25% area and 20% power overhead. However, functions can be found by greater RE effort. Expansion of literals incurs 36% power overhead. However, it imposes brute force search by the adversary for which the RE effort increases by 3.04X.

Processes based on electrostatic projection are used extensively in industry, e.g. for mineral separations, electrophotography or manufacturing of coated abrasives, such as sandpaper. Despite decades of engineering practice, there are still unanswered questions. In this paper, we present a comprehensive experimental study of projection process of more than 1500 individual spherical alumina particles with a nominal size of 500 $\mu$m, captured by high-speed video imaging and digital image analysis. Based on flight trajectories of approximately 1100 projected particles, we determined the acquired charge and dynamics as a function of relative humidity (RH) and electric field intensity and compared the results with classical theories. For RH levels of 50\% and above, more than 85\% of disposed particles were projected, even when the electric field intensity was at its minimum level. This suggests that, beyond a critical value of electric field intensity, relative humidity plays a more critical role in the projection process. We also observed that the charging time is reduced dramatically for RH levels of 50\% and above, possibly due to the build-up of thin water films around the particles which can facilitate charge transfer. In contrast, projected particles at 30\% RH level exhibited an excessive amount of electric charge, between two to four times than that of saturation value, which might be attributed to triboelectric charging effects. Finally, the physics of electrostatic projection is compared and contrasted with those of induced-charge electrokinetic phenomena, which share similar field-square scaling, as the applied field acts on its own induced charge to cause particle motion.
