We implement individual addressing and readout of ions in a rigidly rotating planar crystal in a compact, permanent magnet Penning trap. The crystal of ^{40}Ca^{+} is trapped and stabilized without defects via a rotating triangular potential. The trapped ion fluorescence is detected in the rotating frame for parallel readout. The qubit is encoded in the metastable D&#95;{5/2} manifold enabling the use of high-power near-infrared laser systems for qubit operations. Addressed σ&#95;{z} operations are realized with a focused ac Stark shifting laser beam. We demonstrate addressing of ions near the center of the crystal and at large radii. Simulations show that the current addressing operation fidelity is limited to ∼97% by the ion's thermal extent for the in-plane modes near the Doppler limit, but this could be improved to infidelities <10^{-3} with sub-Doppler cooling. The techniques demonstrated in this Letter complete the set of operations for quantum simulation with the platform.

Introduction: Use of fully automated solutions to perform analysis of immunohematology tests is highly desirable as it delivers an improved level of safety and security of results. However, full automation may not be feasible financially and practically in all circumstances. A solution that addresses most of the process step hazards of manual testing can assist in achieving a higher level of confidence in and safety of test results., Methods: The study utilized a column agglutination technology (ORTHO BioVue ® System) to test a variety of samples on the ORTHO VISION ® Analyzer and compare to the reader capability of the ORTHO OPTIX™ Reader. Both direct agglutination and direct/indirect antiglobulin test methods were evaluated. The data was analysed for per cent agreement and for concordance at the lower bound 95% confidence interval. The acceptance criteria for concordance for direct agglutination was ≥ 99.4% and for indirect agglutination was ≥ 98.0% at a lower bound 95% confidence interval., Results: There were 13,805 columns producing 5174 interpreted tests for direct agglutination and 5998 columns producing 2958 interpreted direct/indirect antiglobulin tests evaluated. Testing demonstrated that direct agglutination and direct/indirect antiglobulin testing generated greater than 99% concordance between the fully automated instrument system and the reader., Conclusions: The reader exceeded the approval criteria set for the study which demonstrates the capability to address the desire for a solution that moves manual testing to an enhanced level which achieves improved safety and security in immunohematology testing., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Ltd. Background: Evenness of protein intake is associated with increased lean mass, but its relationship with muscle strength and performance is uncertain., Objectives: We determined the association of evenness of protein intake with lean mass, muscle strength and endurance, and functional ability., Design: This was a cross-sectional study., Setting: Data were collected at a research university in the upper midwestern United States., Participants: One hundred ninety-two healthy women, aged 18 to 79 years, mean ± SEM 41.9 ± 1.3, completed the study., Measurements: Dietary intake was assessed using 3-day food diaries verified with food frequency questionnaires. To assess evenness of protein intake, the day was divided into 3 periods: waking to 11:30, 11:31 to 16:30, and after 16:30. Lean mass was measured with dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Lower-body muscle strength and endurance were determined using isokinetic dynamometry. Upper-body muscle strength was maximal handgrip strength. Functional ability was assessed using 6-m gait speed and 30-second chair stand tests. Accelerometry measured physical activity., Results: Intakes of 25 g or more of protein at 1 or more of the 3 periods was positively associated with lean mass (β ± S.E.; 1.067 ± 0.273 kg, P  < .001) and upper-body (3.274 ± 0.737 kg, P  < .001) and lower-body strength (22.858 ± 7.918 Nm, P  = .004) when controlling for age, body mass index, physical activity, and energy and protein intakes. Consuming at least 0.24 g/kg/period for those under 60 years and 0.4 g/kg/period for those 60 years and older was related to lean mass (0.754 ± 0.244 kg, P  = .002), upper-body strength (2.451 ± 0.658 kg, P  < .001), and lower-body endurance (184.852 ± 77.185 J, P  = .018), controlling for the same variables., Conclusions: Evenness of protein intake is related to lean mass, muscle strength, and muscular endurance in women. We implement a 2-qubit entangling Mølmer-Sørensen interaction by transporting two cotrapped ^{40}Ca^{+} ions through a stationary, bichromatic optical beam within a surface-electrode Paul trap. We describe a procedure for achieving a constant Doppler shift during the transport, which uses fine temporal adjustment of the moving confinement potential. The fixed interaction duration of the ions transported through the laser beam as well as the dynamically changing ac Stark shift require alterations to the calibration procedures used for a stationary gate. We use the interaction to produce Bell states with fidelities commensurate to those of stationary gates performed in the same system. This result establishes the feasibility of actively incorporating ion transport into quantum information entangling operations.

Entanglement generation in trapped-ion systems has relied thus far on two distinct but related geometric phase gate techniques: Mølmer-Sørensen and light-shift gates. We recently proposed a variant of the light-shift scheme where the qubit levels are separated by an optical frequency [B. C. Sawyer and K. R. Brown, Phys. Rev. A 103, 022427 (2021)PLRAAN2469-992610.1103/PhysRevA.103.022427]. Here we report an experimental demonstration of this entangling gate using a pair of ^{40}Ca^{+} ions in a cryogenic surface-electrode ion trap and a commercial, high-power, 532 nm Nd:YAG laser. Generating a Bell state in 35  μs, we directly measure an infidelity of 6(3)×10^{-4} without subtraction of experimental errors. The 532 nm gate laser wavelength suppresses intrinsic photon scattering error to ∼1×10^{-5}.

Trapped ions offer a pristine platform for quantum computation and simulation, but improving their coherence remains a crucial challenge. Here, we propose and analyze a new strategy to enhance the coherent interactions in trapped ion systems via parametric amplification of the ions' motion-by squeezing the collective motional modes (phonons), the spin-spin interactions they mediate can be significantly enhanced. We illustrate the power of this approach by showing how it can enhance collective spin states useful for quantum metrology, and how it can improve the speed and fidelity of two-qubit gates in multi-ion systems, important ingredients for scalable trapped ion quantum computation. Our results are also directly relevant to numerous other physical platforms in which spin interactions are mediated by bosons.

In trapped-ion quantum information processing, interactions between spins (qubits) are mediated by collective modes of motion of an ion crystal. While there are many different experimental strategies to design such interactions, they all face both technical and fundamental limitations to the achievable coherent interaction strength. In general, obtaining strong interactions and fast gates is an ongoing challenge. Here, we extend previous work [W. Ge, B. C. Sawyer, J. W. Britton, K. Jacobs, J. J. Bollinger, and M. Foss-Feig, Phys. Rev. Lett. 122 , 030501 (2019)] and present a general strategy for enhancing the interaction strengths in trapped-ion systems via parametric amplification of the ions' motion. Specifically, we propose a stroboscopic protocol using alternating applications of parametric amplification and spin-motion coupling. In comparison with the previous work, we show that the current protocol can lead to larger enhancements in the coherent interaction that increase exponentially with the gate time.

We present a technique to measure the amplitude of a center-of-mass (c.m.) motion of a two-dimensional ion crystal of ∼100 ions. By sensing motion at frequencies far from the c.m. resonance frequency, we experimentally determine the technique's measurement imprecision. We resolve amplitudes as small as 50 pm, 40 times smaller than the c.m. mode zero-point fluctuations. The technique employs a spin-dependent, optical-dipole force to couple the mechanical oscillation to the electron spins of the trapped ions, enabling a measurement of one quadrature of the c.m. motion through a readout of the spin state. We demonstrate sensitivity limits set by spin projection noise and spin decoherence due to off-resonant light scattering. When performed on resonance with the c.m. mode frequency, the technique demonstrated here can enable the detection of extremely weak forces (<1  yN) and electric fields (<1  nV/m), providing an opportunity to probe quantum sensing limits and search for physics beyond the standard model.

Quantum simulation of spin models can provide insight into problems that are difficult or impossible to study with classical computers. Trapped ions are an established platform for quantum simulation, but only systems with fewer than 20 ions have demonstrated quantum correlations. We studied quantum spin dynamics arising from an engineered, homogeneous Ising interaction in a two-dimensional array of (9)Be(+) ions in a Penning trap. We verified entanglement in spin-squeezed states of up to 219 ions, directly observing 4.0 ± 0.9 decibels of spectroscopic enhancement, and observed states with non-Gaussian statistics consistent with oversqueezed states. The good agreement with ab initio theory that includes interactions and decoherence lays the groundwork for simulations of the transverse-field Ising model with variable-range interactions, which are generally intractable with classical methods., (Copyright © 2016, American Association for the Advancement of Science.)

Atomic ions confined in multi-electrode traps have been proposed as a basis for scalable quantum information processing. This scheme involves transporting ions between spatially distinct locations by use of time-varying electric potentials combined with laser or microwave pulses for quantum logic in specific locations. We report the development of a fast multi-channel arbitrary waveform generator for applying the time-varying electric potentials used for transport and for shaping quantum logic pulses. The generator is based on a field-programmable gate array controlled ensemble of 16-bit digital-to-analog converters with an update frequency of 50 MHz and an output range of ±10 V. The update rate of the waveform generator is much faster than relevant motional frequencies of the confined ions in our experiments, allowing diabatic control of the ion motion. Numerous pre-loaded sets of time-varying voltages can be selected with 40 ns latency conditioned on real-time signals. Here we describe the device and demonstrate some of its uses in ion-based quantum information experiments, including speed-up of ion transport and the shaping of laser and microwave pulses.

We demonstrate spectroscopy and thermometry of individual motional modes in a mesoscopic 2D ion array using entanglement-induced decoherence as a method of transduction. Our system is a ~400 μm-diameter planar crystal of several hundred 9Be(+) ions exhibiting complex drumhead modes in the confining potential of a Penning trap. Exploiting precise control over the 9Be(+) valence electron spins, we apply a homogeneous spin-dependent optical dipole force to excite arbitrary transverse modes with an effective wavelength approaching the interparticle spacing (~20 μm). Center-of-mass displacements below 1 nm are detected via the entanglement of spin and motional degrees of freedom.

The presence of long-range quantum spin correlations underlies a variety of physical phenomena in condensed-matter systems, potentially including high-temperature superconductivity. However, many properties of exotic, strongly correlated spin systems, such as spin liquids, have proved difficult to study, in part because calculations involving N-body entanglement become intractable for as few as N ≈ 30 particles. Feynman predicted that a quantum simulator--a special-purpose 'analogue' processor built using quantum bits (qubits)--would be inherently suited to solving such problems. In the context of quantum magnetism, a number of experiments have demonstrated the feasibility of this approach, but simulations allowing controlled, tunable interactions between spins localized on two- or three-dimensional lattices of more than a few tens of qubits have yet to be demonstrated, in part because of the technical challenge of realizing large-scale qubit arrays. Here we demonstrate a variable-range Ising-type spin-spin interaction, J(i,j), on a naturally occurring, two-dimensional triangular crystal lattice of hundreds of spin-half particles (beryllium ions stored in a Penning trap). This is a computationally relevant scale more than an order of magnitude larger than previous experiments. We show that a spin-dependent optical dipole force can produce an antiferromagnetic interaction J(i,j) proportional variant d(-a)(i,j), where 0 ≤ a ≤ 3 and d(i,j) is the distance between spin pairs. These power laws correspond physically to infinite-range (a = 0), Coulomb-like (a = 1), monopole-dipole (a = 2) and dipole-dipole (a = 3) couplings. Experimentally, we demonstrate excellent agreement with a theory for 0.05 ≲ a ≲ 1.4. This demonstration, coupled with the high spin count, excellent quantum control and low technical complexity of the Penning trap, brings within reach the simulation of otherwise computationally intractable problems in quantum magnetism.

Cold molecules promise to reveal a rich set of novel collision dynamics in the low-energy regime. By combining for the first time the techniques of Stark deceleration, magnetic trapping, and cryogenic buffer gas cooling, we present the first experimental observation of cold collisions between two different species of state-selected neutral polar molecules. This has enabled an absolute measurement of the total trap loss cross sections between OH and ND(3) at a mean collision energy of 3.6 cm(-1) (5 K). Due to the dipolar interaction, the total cross section increases upon application of an external polarizing electric field. Cross sections computed from ab initio potential energy surfaces are in agreement with the measured value at zero external electric field. The theory presented here represents the first such analysis of collisions between a (2)Π radical and a closed-shell polyatomic molecule.

We propose a method for laser cooling and trapping a substantial class of polar molecules and, in particular, titanium (II) oxide (TiO). This method uses pulsed electric fields to nonadiabatically remix the ground-state magnetic sublevels of the molecule, allowing one to build a magneto-optical trap based on a quasicycling J' = J'' -1 transition. Monte Carlo simulations of this electrostatically remixed magneto-optical trap demonstrate the feasibility of cooling TiO to a temperature of 10 micrpK and trapping it with a radiation-pumping-limited lifetime on the order of 80 ms.

Cold, neutral hydroxyl radicals are Stark decelerated and efficiently loaded into a permanent magnetic trap. The OH molecules are trapped in the rovibrational ground state at a density of approximately 10;{6} cm;{-3} and temperature of 70 mK. Collision studies between the trapped OH sample and supersonic beams of atomic He and molecular D2 determine absolute collision cross sections. The He-OH and D2-OH center-of-mass collision energies are tuned from 60 cm;{-1} to 230 cm;{-1} and 145 cm;{-1} to 510 cm;{-1}, respectively, yielding evidence of quantum threshold scattering and resonant energy transfer between colliding particles.

We report magnetic confinement of neutral, ground state OH at a density of approximately 3 x 10(3) cm(-3) and temperature of approximately 30 mK. An adjustable electric field sufficiently large to polarize the OH is superimposed on the trap in various geometries, making an overall potential arising from both Zeeman and Stark effects. An effective molecular Hamiltonian is constructed, with Monte Carlo simulations accurately modeling the observed single-molecule dynamics in various trap configurations. Magnetic trapping of cold polar molecules under adjustable electric fields may enable study of low energy dipolar interactions.

We report precise measurements of ground-state, Lambda-doublet microwave transitions in the hydroxyl radical molecule (OH). Utilizing slow, cold molecules produced by a Stark decelerator we have improved over the precision of the previous best measurement 25-fold for the F'=2-->F=2 transition, yielding (1 667 358 996 +/- 4)Hz, and by tenfold for the F'=1-->F=1 transition, yielding (1 665 401 803 +/-12)Hz. Comparing these laboratory frequencies to those from OH megamasers in interstellar space will allow a sensitivity of 1 ppm for Delta(alpha/alpha) over approximately 10(10) yr.

The effects of an oral administration of carbon tetrachloride on various liver microsomal and supernatant components were studied 1hr. and 2hr. after dosing. The modifications of such early changes resulting from a concomitant administration of promethazine together with the carbon tetrachloride were also investigated. The microsomal components studied were: cytochromes P-450 and b(5); inorganic pyrophosphatase; NADH- and NADPH-cytochrome c reductases; NADH- and NADPH-neotetrazolium reductases; a lipid-peroxidation system associated with the oxidation of NADPH and stimulated by ADP and Fe(2+). NAD- and NADP- DT-diaphorases were measured in the supernatant solution remaining after isolation of liver microsomes, and the distribution of RNA phosphorus between the microsomes and supernatant solution was also determined. Carbon tetrachloride produced a rapid fall in inorganic pyrophosphatase activity, a rather slower decrease in cytochrome P-450 content of the microsomes and small increases in the activities of NADH-cytochrome c reductase and neotetrazolium reductases. The activities of NADPH-cytochrome c reductase, the NADPH-ADP/Fe(2+)-linked lipid-peroxidation system, DT-diaphorases and the content of cytochrome b(5) in the microsomes were unchanged. There was also a loss of RNA phosphorus from the microsomes into the supernatant solution. The RNA phosphorus redistribution, the decrease in inorganic pyrophosphatase and the increases in neotetrazolium reductase activities were at least partially prevented by a concomitant dosing with promethazine. However, the decrease in cytochrome P-450 was not affected by promethazine treatment. These early changes are discussed in terms of the liver necrosis produced by carbon tetrachloride and which is greatly retarded in its onset by the administration of promethazine.

1. The actions of various inhibitors of the microsomal NADPH-cytochrome P-450 electron-transport chain have been studied on the stimulatory effect of carbon tetrachloride on malonaldehyde production. 2. Carbon monoxide, p-chloromercuribenzoate, beta-diethylaminoethyl-3,3'-diphenylpropyl acetate (SKF 525A) and nicotinamide did not decrease the stimulatory action of carbon tetrachloride on malonaldehyde production when present in concentrations shown to be capable of strongly inhibiting the demethylation of aminopyrine. 3. In contrast with the effects of the substances mentioned above, low concentrations of cytochrome c strongly depressed the stimulatory action of carbon tetrachloride on malonaldehyde production while increasing the endogenous rate of peroxidation. 4. Aging the microsomal suspensions at 0 degrees C caused a rapid decrease in aminopyrine demethylation activity and in lipid peroxidation catalysed by ADP and Fe(2+). The stimulation of malonaldehyde production by carbon tetrachloride was relatively unaffected, however, by aging the microsomes at 0 degrees C for 3 days; during this period cytochrome P-450 decreased by more than 30%. 5. The conclusion is reached that the interaction between carbon tetrachloride and the NADPH-cytochrome P-450 electron-transport chain necessary for the stimulation of malonaldehyde production involves a locus near to if not identical with the NADPH-cytochrome c reductase flavoprotein.

1. The effects of a number of free-radical scavengers and other agents on the stimulation of malonaldehyde production due to low concentrations of carbon tetrachloride have been studied in rat liver microsome suspensions. 2. Promethazine, propyl gallate and NN'-diphenyl-p-phenylenediamine were extremely active in inhibiting the stimulation of malonaldehyde production due to carbon tetrachloride; inhibitory effects were demonstrable with these agents at 0.1mum. 3. Low concentrations (1-100nm) of vitamin E-polyethylene glycol 1000-succinate increased the stimulation of malonaldehyde production due to carbon tetrachloride, but higher concentrations of the vitamin E preparation decreased both the stimulation due to carbon tetrachloride and the endogenous peroxidation that occurs in the absence of carbon tetrachloride. 4. Other agents tested that were effective in the range 1-20mum in decreasing the stimulation of malonaldehyde production due to carbon tetrachloride were inosine, desferrioxamine and EDTA. Agents tested that were not effective, except at very high concentrations (100mum or greater), were Nupercaine, Cetab and sodium phenobarbitone. 5. The results are discussed in terms of the mechanisms responsible for the observed inhibitions of malonaldehyde production, and of the relevance of the in vitro system to the liver damage produced by carbon tetrachloride in vivo.

1. The general features of the reaction by which carbon tetrachloride stimulates lipid peroxidation have been elucidated in rat liver microsomal suspensions and in mixtures of microsomes plus cell sap. The production of lipid peroxides has been correlated with malonaldehyde production in the systems used. 2. The stimulation of malonaldehyde production by carbon tetrachloride requires a source of reduced NADP(+) and is dependent on the extent of the endogenous peroxidation of the microsomal membranes: if extensive endogenous peroxidation occurs during incubation then no stimulation by carbon tetrachloride is apparent. 3. The stimulation of malonaldehyde production by carbon tetrachloride has been shown to be proportional to the square root of the carbon tetrachloride concentration in the incubation mixture. It is concluded that the stimulation of malonaldehyde production by carbon tetrachloride results from an initiation process that is itself dependent on the homolytic dissociation of carbon tetrachloride to free-radical products. 4. The increased production of malonaldehyde due to carbon tetrachloride is accompanied by a decreased activity of glucose 6-phosphatase in rat liver microsomal suspensions. 5. The relative activities of bromotrichloromethane, fluorotrichloromethane and chloroform have been evaluated in comparison with the effects of carbon tetrachloride in increasing malonaldehyde production and in decreasing glucose 6-phosphatase activity. Bromotrichloromethane was more effective, and fluorotrichloromethane and chloroform were less effective, than carbon tetrachloride in producing these two effects. It is concluded that homolytic bond fission of the halogenomethanes is a requisite for the occurrence of the two effects observed in the endoplasmic reticulum.
