Abstract

This Data Point examines the school start time for public high schools in the United States by selected characteristics and state. It uses data from the School Questionnaire of the 2017-18 National Teacher and Principal Survey (NTPS), which is both a state and nationally representative sample survey of public and private K-12 schools, principals, and teachers in the 50 states and the District of Columbia. The selected school samples include about 10,600 traditional and charter public schools and 4,000 private schools.

5. The Impact of College Drug Policy on Students' Drug Usage

Abstract

Illicit drug usage at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) is a topic of limited research. The research questions that guided this study were (a) What is the relationship between college policy on illicit drugs and students' frequency of drug usage after controlling for college location (urban or rural) and students' age, gender and GPA (b) What is the relationship between the availability of drugs and students' perception of drug usage effects on GPA after controlling for students' age, gender, GPA, college location and policy on drugs? Between two HBCUs, 93 Full-time Black students between 18 and 24 years old whose status was non-transfer and live on campus, took the online survey summer 2011. Students' response to the online survey instrument provided data on (a) frequency of drug usage; (b) gender; (c) perception of the effects of drug usage on GPA; (d) age; (e) GPA; (f) drug availability; (g) college policy on drugs and (h) college location. Data was collected and analyzed through descriptive statistics, bivariate analysis and ordinal regression. Based upon the results of the descriptive statistics analysis, majority of the students (50.5%) were from both an institution with no policy on drugs in an urban location. Majority of the sample was female 52.7%. The age for majority of participants was between 20 and 21. The highest GPA was between 2.0 and 2.4, a C average. The main areas of themes that emerged from participant responses included frequency of drug usage, drug availability and drug usage effects on GPA. In this study, the finding indicated that college policy on illicit drugs impacted students' frequency of drug usage. Controlling variable, student's GPA had a significant relationship with students' frequency of drug usage. The findings also indicated that there is no significant relationship between the availability of drugs and students' perception of drug usage effects on GPA. None of the controlling variables: college location, age, gender and GPA had a significant relationship with students' perception of drug usage effects on GPA. The frequencies to which students' use drugs are based on their campus policy on drugs. The findings of this study may have implications for educational stakeholders responsible for policies on drug usage. Educational stakeholders could use the findings of this study to foster and reframe teaching and learning. The findings of this study may help the participating colleges to focus on increasing student achievement through a comprehensive plan of college improvement through a policy on drug usage based on the students' perceptions and frequency of drug usage. Thus, the findings of this study may shed further light on drug policy development to support HBCU students. Abstract

The rate of reaction, Arrhenius preexponential factors, and activation energies of cyclopropane and difluoromethoxydifluoromethane, reacting with hydroxyl radical were measured by a relative method. Ethane was used as a reference and eight measurements were obtained in the range from 25 to 186 degree C that yielded an Arrhenius fit for the reaction of cyclopropane with hydroxyl radical.

Abstract

The asynchronous learning environment is characterized by complexities such as maintaining proficiency with organizational and technology changes, class management, perceptions of isolation, and classroom performance review. The purpose of this research is to identify and describe stress management techniques used by University of Phoenix (UOPX) online faculty to counteract identified stressors associated with teaching in the online environment. The isolation, depersonalization, and low sense of personal accomplishment reported by online faculty contribute to stress, burnout, and retention problems. Faculty burnout results in the loss of experienced faculty and increased costs associated with the recruitment of replacement faculty. The loss of experienced faculty can inhibit quality of learning, and contribute to student attrition. Since work-related stress and time-management in the asynchronous learning environment require online faculty to employ a wide variety of coping techniques, this study may help online faculty develop or expand current strategies that are effective in dealing with stress associated with teaching in the asynchronous online learning environment. This quantitative correlational case study will examine coping strategies used by University of Phoenix online faculty to decrease their stress load. The status variable for this study's research is stress. The independent variables are identified as common stressors for University of Phoenix online faculty include (a) maintaining proficiency with organizational and technology changes; (b) class management; (c) isolation and (d) classroom performance review. The dependent variables are coping mechanisms commonly used to manage stressors. Data will be collected by administering a voluntary, anonymous, online survey to be distributed through email. The survey instrument will gather data on the coping methods used for the different types of stressors typical for the online learning environment. Current research indicates that faculty coping mechanisms include talking with others, physical/recreational activities, support groups/mental health counselors, self-destructive behaviors, such as increased alcohol and other substance use, self-awareness, self-reflection, and project management. 21. The zebrafish gene cloche acts upstream of a flk-1 homologue to regulate endothelial cell differentiation

Abstract

The zebrafish cloche mutation affects both the endothelial and hematopoietic lineages at a very early stage (Stainier, D. Y. R., Weinstein, B. M., Detrich, H. W., Zon, L. I. and Fishman, M. C. (1995). Development 121, 3141-3150). The most striking vascular phenotype is the absence of endocardial cells from the heart. Microscopic examination of mutant embryos reveals the presence of endothelial-like cells in the lower trunk and tail regions while head vessels appear to be missing, indicating a molecular diversification of the endothelial lineage. Cell transplantation experiments show that cloche acts cell-autonomously within the endothelial lineage. To analyze further the role of cloche in regulating endothelial cell differentiation, we have examined the expression of flk-1 and tie, two receptor tyrosine kinase genes expressed early and sequentially in the endothelial lineage. In wild-type fish, flk-1-positive cells are found throughout the embryo and differentiate to form the nascent vasculature. In cloche mutants, flk-1-positive cells are found only in the lower trunk and tail regions, and this expression is delayed as compared to wild-type. Unlike the flk-1-positive cells in wild-type embryos, those in cloche mutants do not go on to express tie, suggesting that their differentiation is halted at an early stage. We also find that the cloche mutation is not linked to flk-1. These data indicate that cloche affects the differentiation of all endothelial cells and that it acts at a very early stage, either by directly regulating flk-1 expression or by controlling the differentiation of cells that normally develop to express flk-1. cloche mutants also have a blood deficit and their hematopoietic tissues show no expression of the hematopoietic transcription factor genes GATA-1 or GATA-2 at early stages. Because the appearance of distinct levels of flk-1 expression is delayed in cloche mutants, we examined GATA-1 expression at late embryonic stages and found some blood cell differentiation that appears to be limited to the region lined by the flk-1-expressing cells. The spatial restriction of blood in the ventroposterior-most region of cloche mutant embryos may be indicative of a ventral source of signal(s) controlling hematopoietic differentiation. In addition, the restricted colocalization of blood and endothelium in cloche mutants suggests that important interactions occur between these two lineages during normal development.

Abstract

Chemists are constantly striving for techniques that add dimensions of orthogonality with increased throughput and sample complexity. Ion mobility spectrometry (IM) is a gas-phase separation method that adds new dimensions to mass spectrometry (MS). IM separates gas-phase ions based on their collision cross-section and can be coupled with time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometry to yield a powerful tool used in the identification and characterization of proteins and peptides. A fundamental introduction to IM is presented with a focus on resolution, sensitivity, and orthogonality coupled with TOF-MS.
