Let's say you are a Grades 3-5 teacher in search of an activity sheet on different fraction notations. A search in May 2022 on the popular resources sharing site TeachersPayTeachers (TpT) yielded 2,832 results, 105 of which were free. With so many options, how would you go about choosing a resource for your students? What would factor into your decision? How would your learning goals, mathematics standards, or other factors influence your choice? How much would you consider visual appeal? Would cost affect your choice? Asking these types of questions when searching for and choosing or adapting resources is extremely important. The article provides two examples that highlight some of the different activity sheets. Both focus on representing fractions in various forms. Activity 1 is free, is decorated for St. Patrick's Day, and emphasizes two types of fraction notations. A teacher might choose it in March to focus students on commonly used fractions and their decimal equivalents. Activity 2 is for sale, is decorated with children holding dice, emphasizes three types of fraction notations along with a visual representation, and is part of a packet with additional matching and cut-paste activities. A teacher might choose it for its options of ways to focus on multiple representations with visual connections. Although this is a made-up example, it highlights a growing phenomenon. Following the rise of online teacher-created resource-sharing sites such as Amazon Ignite, Pinterest, and TeachersPayTeachers, the availability of teacher-created mathematics resources has increased exponentially, leading many teachers to supplement their district-supplied curricula (Silver, 2021).

Online teacherpreneurs are teachers who use social media platforms to create, sell, and distribute educational resources to others. For many teachers, they have become the new curriculum developers in our virtually intensive world. Curriculum development in mathematics education has a large impact on how students understand concepts, but little is known about these online mathematics teacherpreneurs influences on the curriculum. Therefore, as part of a larger study investigating the top 500 free elementary mathematics educational resource developers on TeachersPayTeachers.com (TpT), we surveyed the teacherpreneurs who created these top resources. Using the constant comparative method, we analyzed 58 responses to learn more about the online mathematics TpT teacherpreneurs: who they are, how they believe they became popular, and what they believe their teacher customers want when searching for resources. We found these teacherpreneurs identified themselves as teachers with typically over 10 years of experience creating classroom resources. Many attributed their popularity to advertising their resources via social media and having a large number of products available for teachers. They identified beliefs that teachers want easy to use, free, quality materials that are visually appealing. Implications, including findings that indicate a misalignment between what teachers say they want and what the teacherpreneurs believe teachers want, are discussed.

In this essay, we describe some challenges that mathematics teacher educators may face when teaching content courses for future elementary and middle school teachers. We summarize research that suggests students in content courses may have fixed mindsets, unproductive beliefs, and mathematics anxiety that can interfere with their ability to learn mathematics content. We suggest possible interventions to address these affective issues, including student-centered instruction, valuing mistakes, process praise, self-directed learning, and activities that inspire student reflection related to his or her own mathematical understandings.

Despite increasing attention on suicidality in autistic people, we know little about suicidal presentations when autistic individuals present to hospital emergency departments (ED). We conducted an exploratory retrospective chart review of suicidal thoughts and behaviours (STB) of autistic adults who presented to a psychiatric ED. The analysis included 16 charts over a 10-week period. Findings highlight that reported STB were not always the presenting issue. Life transitions and interpersonal conflicts were common antecedents, and active rumination about STB was distressing and fatiguing. Findings imply that ED visits serve as important opportunities for suicidal risk reduction for autistic individuals, through implementation of strategies for identification of STB such as active screening, and the provision of suicide resources tailored to autistic people.

Some researchers found that preservice mathematics teacher education programs have little effect on elementary mathematics teacher beliefs. A preservice teacher education program can influence beliefs for some mathematics teachers. However, the question still remains as to what happens to these beliefs after the first 2 years of teaching. In this study, I interviewed and observed three elementary mathematics teachers 10 years after their preservice education program ended to investigate their current beliefs about the nature of mathematics, teaching mathematics, and learning mathematics and how these beliefs compared to those they held during their second year of teaching. The data show that teacher education programs might not initially influence individuals, but later, the individuals could become aware of their beliefs and take practices taught in teacher education programs into consideration. The data also support the finding that teacher education programs can have a lasting impact on these participants.

I investigated a reform based teachers' beliefs about the nature of mathematics, teaching mathematics, and learning mathematics, and the factors leading to their formation. I interviewed and observed a reform-based elementary mathematics teacher with 13 years' experience teaching first grade. She held a Platonist/problem solver view of mathematics, explainer view of teaching, and an active view of learning and was influenced by her husband, preschool son, past teachers, certification, professional development, and teaching experience. I found personal factors outside of education could significantly support beliefs in reform-based teaching and speculate that reflection on personal factors could initiate belief change. From 2007 to 2009, the United States experienced one of the greatest economic declines reported in the previous decades, known as the Great Recession (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2012). While a great deal of media attention focused on the immediate financial effects of the recession, little discussion was made about the influence of this crisis upon students' lives and education (Isaacs & Healy, 2012). Therefore, I investigated what happened to the education of these students. In this case study, three elementary teachers who taught over 10 years identified how the Great Recession affected their teaching practices. This investigation highlights how economic situations change how teachers address students' emotional, physical, and academic needs and how educators can assist teachers in these changing environments by providing differentiated strategies to reach their evolving student population.

Although much is known about the benefits of student teaching in developing preservice teachers, less is known about preservice teachers' earlier field experiences at the freshman and sophomore academic levels. This study examined a student-led educational organization that provided an early, whole-school immersive field experience through the creation of the third space. The Whole-School Immersive Program (WISP) that created this third space brought together university faculty, preservice teachers, P-12 educators, and their administrators. Through a qualitative case study approach that utilized semi-structured focus group and individual interviews, alumni surveys, and participants' applications, this study examined the program's influences on preservice teachers. The findings indicated that these preservice teachers gained a deeper understanding of the school context, (dis)confirmed their desire to become educators, and gained knowledge of personal inquiry from participating in this student-led educational organization.

Background: Moral injury occurs when one witnesses or perpetrates an act that transgresses strongly held moral beliefs and expectations. First documented among active military and veterans, moral injury is increasingly studied in healthcare personnel impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. Measurement of moral injury among this population, particularly nurses, is still in its infancy. Objective: To develop the Moral Injury Symptom Scale – Clinician-Short Form and validate it among United States based acute care nurses. Methods: The Moral Injury Symptom Scale – Military Version was modified for a healthcare audience. 174 acute care nurses responded to a survey package including the scale and related instruments. Reliability and validity, including convergent and discriminant validities, were assessed, and a cutoff score was calculated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve. Results: Reliability (Cronbach α =.75) and validity were established and a cutoff score of 41, based on functional impairment caused by moral injury, demonstrated 86.4% sensitivity and 69.6% specificity. Nurses who screened positive for moral injury experienced higher depression, anxiety, work exhaustion, interpersonal disengagement, emotional exhaustion, and depersonalization. Conclusions: The Moral Injury Symptom Scale – Clinician Version – Short Form is a valid and reliable instrument with strong psychometric properties that can assess moral injury in acute care nurses, a population at risk due to the challenges of providing care during the pandemic. Building content knowledge alongside the task of increasing literacy skills has become a goal for many elementary classrooms. Selecting and implementing texts for the literacy block that both increase content knowledge and develop students' literacy skills alongside increasing motivation for reading is a daunting task. The authors share a strategic approach for selecting texts called the quad text set framework. This framework involves first selecting a target text, which is a challenging content-related text, and then selecting easier texts, including visuals, to build background knowledge and a hook text to garner interest in the topic. The teacher then decides how to implement the texts to best support students' content learning. The authors describe considerations for selecting and ordering texts for interdisciplinary units to maximize content learning and literacy and provide examples of how to implement quad text sets related to math, science, and social studies.

Introduction: This study presents demographic and clinical profiles of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities seen at a psychiatric emergency department (ED). Predictors of admission were also identified. Methods: A retrospective chart review conducted from Oct 2016 to Jan 2017. Results: A total of 73 patients representing 105 visits were identified with suicidality or self-harm being the most frequent presentation. Information from third party sources (collateral) was recorded in the hospital chart 43% of the time. Thirty-six percent of the 105 visits resulted in hospitalization. Patients who were admitted were more likely to have collateral obtained (RR = 2.0, p <0.01), restraints used (RR = 2.5, p < 0.001), and friend/family (RR = 2.9, p < 0.01) or the police (RR = 2.3, p = 0.03) present. Conclusion: Study findings suggest that adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities commonly present to the specialized psychiatric emergency department setting. Many of these patients are inadequately supported and need stronger connections to community-based resources. Collateral information should more frequently be obtained and disability considerations could be better incorporated into management plans.

Internet resources abound for preservice teacher (PST) use today, but we do not know how they choose and describe their implementation of them. This study investigates 158 elementary PSTs' lesson plans across eight courses to describe plan inspiration and justification. PSTs reported being inspired by cooperating teachers (CTs), friends and family members, university courses, and Internet resources. In some cases, these PSTs simply followed lesson plans given to them. In other cases, they collected, curated, synthesized, and applied ideas based on inspirations, showing dispositions of New Literacies Theory. This study provides evidence that teacher educators need to engage PSTs in intentionally developing the skills of curation by acknowledging and modeling the depth and breadth of resources, including those that are not necessarily sanctioned. Implications include ways that teacher educators can frame PSTs' understandings as they critically consume online resources through Critical Curation Theory.

A 2017 study found that 87% of elementary teachers reported consulting Pinterest when planning mathematical lessons (Hertel & Wessman-Enzinger, 2017). When searching for resources on Pinterest, preservice teachers identified looking at the number of pins to determine their quality (Author, 2017). Which leaves teacher educators wondering, what is the quality of materials that preservice and inservice teachers are finding on Pinterest? We conducted a document analysis on the top 500 elementary mathematics pins found on Pinterest to determine what kinds of elementary mathematics materials are available, what mathematics topics are represented, the level of cognitive demand of the elementary mathematics activities, and how the image found on the activities relate to the level of cognitive demand. We found that less than two percent of activities are the highest level of cognitive demand and decorative images are correlated with lower level elementary mathematics activities. With this information, teacher educators could help prepare teachers to decide which resources they should use and what they should look for to increase the level of cognitive demand of elementary mathematics activities they implement in their classroom.

This study examined 158 lesson plans at one institution across two teacher education programs, inclusive early childhood and elementary education, to determine the impact of Internet usage as inspiration on preservice teachers' lesson plans. Fisher's exact test determined statistically significant differences between the Internet use of preservice teachers in the two programs. The data revealed that the preservice teachers in the elementary education program used more Internet resources when planning lessons compared to the preservice teachers in the inclusive early childhood program. Follow-up interviews suggest that the preservice teachers in the inclusive early childhood program had more practicum field experiences, thus increasing their use of physical resources and reducing their use of Internet resources.

The question of how elementary teachers choose tasks has been widely discussed in the field of education. However, these studies have not adequately addressed the increasing use of online resources by elementary mathematics teachers. The authors of this study surveyed 601 elementary mathematics teachers in the United States to examine the trends in the teacher selection of elementary math tasks from online resources. They discuss the relationship between different websites, various selection criteria used to find mathematics activities, and teachers' years of experience. They found a significant relationship between number of years teaching and the use of paid resources and the appeal of visual components of an activity, yet they did not find a significant relationship between years of experience and time spent searching online for an elementary math activity. In sum, this project, by closely examining the trends in teacher selection and use of elementary math tasks, sheds new light on the thinly acknowledged issue of the use of websites and tasks by teachers of elementary mathematics.
