New search modes have been introduced recently to support the exploratory search on the basis of automatically linked references and citations. References are therefore linked to the complete data corpus via specific matching procedures. This represents a step towards a navigable citation index in the field of social sciences in German language. In SOWIPORT werden anhand von automatisch verlinkten Referenzen und Zitationen seit kurzem neue Suchmodi zur Unterstützung explorativer Suche angeboten. Literaturreferenzen werden dazu über spezifische Matching-Verfahren mit den Dokumenten aus dem gesamten Datenbestand verlinkt. Damit ist ein erster wichtiger Schritt in Richtung eines navigierbaren Zitati-onsindex für die deutschsprachigen Sozialwissenschaften getan.

Der Beitrag schließt an die Ausarbeitungen zu wissenschaftlichen Suchmaschinen, Query Understanding und Spezialsuchen der Bände 1 und 2 an. Es soll gezeigt werden, wie durch die Konvergenz von qualitativem Fach-Content und Suchtechnologien Mehrwerte gerade für Expertensuchen generiert werden können. Die Beispiele aus unterschiedlichen akademischen Suchmaschinen (u.a. BASE, Web of Knowledge, Pubmed, Scopus, sowiport, Google Scholar und Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek) sollen das illustrieren, insofern sie grundsätzliche Fragen und Lösungsvorschläge zeigen, die aber über den einzelnen Anwendungsfall hinausweisen. Als in der Praxis erprobte State-of-the-Art-Dienste werden sie gleichwohl mit konkreten Beschreibungen der informationstechnischen Grundlagen untermauert.

We will report on the participation of GESIS at the first CHiC workshop (Cultural Heritage in CLEF). Being held for the first time, no prior experience with the new data set, a document dump of Europeana with ca. 23 million documents, exists. The most prominent issues that arose from pretests with this test collection were the very unspecific topics and sparse document representations. Only half of the topics (26/50) contained a description and the titles were usually short with just around two words. Therefore we focused on three different term suggestion and query expansion mechanisms to surpass the sparse topical description. We used two methods that build on concept extraction from Wikipedia and on a method that applied co-occurrence statistics on the available Europeana corpus.
