We report the discovery of a $z\sim7$ group of galaxies that contains two Little Red Dots (LRDs) just 3.3 kpc apart, along with three satellite galaxies, as part of the Canadian NIRISS Unbiased Cluster Survey (CANUCS). These LRDs are massive ($M_\star\sim10^{10}\,M_\odot$) and dusty (A(V) $>1$ mag) whereas the three satellites are lower-mass objects ($M_\star\sim10^{8-9}\,M_\odot$) subject to low dust attenuations. The spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of this LRD pair show strong evidence for a Balmer Break, consistent with a recent ($\sim 100$ Myr) quenching of star formation. In contrast, the satellites are compatible with a recent-onset ($\sim 100$ Myr), ongoing burst of star formation. LRD1's SED is consistent with a dust-free AGN as the source of the UV excess in the galaxy. The optical continuum would be powered by the emission from an obscured post-starburst and the AGN at a subdominant level. LRD2's SED is more ambiguous to interpret, but it could also be indicative of a dust-free AGN. The proximity of the two LRDs suggests that their interaction may be responsible for their recent star formation histories, which can be interpreted as environmental bursting and quenching in the Epoch of Reionization., Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures, 6 tables. Scalar-tensor theories with derivative interactions form backgrounds which spontaneously break Lorentz invariance. We investigate the dynamics of free scalar perturbations on general anisotropic backgrounds. We demonstrate that the phonons move on null geodesics of an acoustic spacetime described by its own metric and own connection featuring nonmetricity with respect to the usual spacetime metric. We give distinct physical interpretations to the acoustic metric and its inverse. The first defines rays and their phase velocities. The latter defines momenta and the dispersion relation. We classify possible acoustic geometries and provide a physical interpretation for them. We discuss the phonon properties that moving observers, inequivalent owing to the breaking of Lorentz invariance, would measure. Ghosts and true gradient instabilities are to be read off from invariant properties of the acoustic metric - its signature and determinant. However, the choice of the observer's frame can cause some confusion and paradoxes, including apparent instabilities. For instance, complex phonon energies can appear entirely due to the ill-posedness of the Cauchy problem in the frame chosen. On the other hand, unbounded negative phonon energies can appear, without ghosts or gradient instabilities, for observers moving supersonically, when phonon Cherenkov radiation can be emitted. The action for phonons also gives an acoustically covariantly conserved energy-momentum tensor (EMT) which is, however, not conserved in the usual spacetime. Nonetheless, in the presence of an acoustic timelike Killing vector, the acoustic Hamiltonian functional is a conserved charge in both the acoustic and in the usual spacetimes, and even has the same value in both. Thus, the acoustic Hamiltonian can be used to bound the motion of phonons interacting with other species living in the usual spacetime., Comment: 56 pages but 6 figures. Happy New Year!

Antiferromagnets with broken time-reversal symmetry, such as Mn3Sn, have emerged as promising platforms for exploring topological and correlated electron physics. Mn3Sn is known to show two magnetic phase transitions: a non-collinear inverse triangular antiferromagnetic (IT-AFM) spin configuration is formed below its Neel temperature, whereas at T1 that usually locates below room temperature, it transits to an incommensurate spin state. Accordingly, intriguing properties such as a strong anomalous Hall effect, observed from TN to T1, disappear below T1, limiting its utility at low temperatures. While bulk Mn3Sn has been extensively studied, the magnetic phase transitions and their tunability in thin films remain largely unexplored. Here, we investigate the magnetic and magneto-transport properties of Mn3+xSn1-x epitaxial thin films prepared by magnetron sputtering, systematically varying the Mn-Sn composition. Our results reveal that intrinsic alloying with Mn provides us with a handle to tune T1, with the IT-AFM phase stabilized down to liquid helium temperatures for x > 0.15. From a magnetic phase diagram for epitaxial thin films, we also find a consistent magnetic anomaly ~55 K below TN, accompanied by thermal hysteresis. Furthermore, the reduction of TN in thin films relative to bulk values is shown to correlate with lattice parameter changes. These findings extend the accessible temperature range for Mn3Sn's topological properties, paving the way for novel applications and further investigations into the interplay of spin, lattice, and electronic degrees of freedom in thin-film geometries., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, supplementary information

We present a resolved study of $>900$ progenitors of Milky Way Analogs (MWAs) at $0.3

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has recently discovered a new population of objects at high redshift referred to as `Little Red Dots' (LRDs). Their nature currently remains elusive, despite their surprisingly high inferred number densities. This emerging population of red point-like sources is reshaping our view of the early Universe and may shed light on the formation of high-redshift supermassive black holes. Here we present a spectroscopically confirmed LRD CANUCS-LRD-z8.6 at $z_{\rm spec}=8.6319\pm 0.0005$ hosting an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN), using JWST data. This source shows the typical spectral shape of an LRD (blue UV and red optical continuum, unresolved in JWST imaging), along with broad H$\beta$ line emission, detection of high-ionization emission lines (CIV, NIV]) and very high electron temperature indicative of the presence of AGN. This is also combined with a very low metallicity ($Z<0.1 Z_\odot$). The presence of all these diverse features in one source makes CANUCS-LRD-z8.6 unique. We show that the inferred black hole mass of CANUCS-LRD-z8.6 ($M_{\rm BH}=1.0^{+0.6}_{-0.4}\times 10^{8}\rm ~M_\odot$) strongly challenges current standard theoretical models and simulations of black hole formation, and forces us to adopt `ad hoc' prescriptions. Indeed if massive seeds, or light seeds with super-Eddington accretion, are considered, the observed BH mass of CANUCS-LRD-z8.6 at $z=8.6$ can be reproduced. Moreover, the black hole is over-massive compared to its host, relative to the local $M_{\rm BH}-M_*$ relations, pointing towards an earlier and faster evolution of the black hole compared to its host galaxy., Comment: 4 main figures; 8 supplementary figures; 5 supplementary tables

Galaxies are predicted to assemble their stellar haloes through the accretion of stellar material from interactions with their cosmic environment. Observations that trace stellar halo buildup probe the processes that drive galaxy size and stellar mass growth. We investigate stellar halo assembly over $0.2 \leq z \leq 1.1$ in a mass-complete ($M_{\star} \geq 10^{9.5}M_{\odot}$) sample of 242,456 star-forming and 88,421 quiescent galaxies (SFGs and QGs) from the CLAUDS and HSC-SSP surveys. We extract galaxy rest-frame $g$-band surface brightness ($\mu_g$) profiles to study faint, extended emission in galaxy outskirts. We examine trends in galaxy assembly by analyzing the median $\mu_g$ profiles in different SFG and QG \msS ranges with decreasing redshift and connecting evolution in galaxy $\mu_g$ profiles with the underlying stellar mass growth in galaxies. Since $z=1.1$, the majority of evolution in the median $\mu_g$ profiles of galaxies ($\sim$64$\%$ in SFGs and $\sim$71$\%$ in QGs) occurs throughout their stellar halo regions (2-10$R_e$). More massive galaxies assemble stellar halo material more rapidly at $0.2 \leq z \leq 1.1$. Over this period, QGs grow a larger fraction of their stellar haloes than SFGs at fixed $M_{\star}$ (factor of $\sim$1.2). Although star formation can account for the stellar halo growth observed in low-mass SFGs ($10^{9.5}M_\odot \leq M_\star < 10^{10.5}M_\odot$), high-mass SFGs ($M_\star \geq 10^{10.5}M_\odot$) and both low- and high-mass QGs require an additional assembly mechanism. Our results suggest accretion via minor mergers drives additional stellar halo growth in these galaxies. The contribution from accretion is larger in more massive galaxies (over $M_{\star} \geq 10^{9.5}M_{\odot}$), and QGs exhibit larger fractional increases to their ex-situ fractions over $0.2 \leq z \leq 1.1$ than SFGs at fixed $M_{\star}$., Comment: 29 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables. We study consequences of applying formalism of symplectic geometry to quantum mechanics. We propose a physical interpretation of a symplectic indicator of entanglement, introduced in [1], given by the degeneracy of the symplectic form on manifolds of locally unitary equivalent states. We show that this degeneracy can be understood as an ambiguity of some classical dynamic.

We present a new analytical model for the attenuation to Epoch of Reionization (EoR) galaxies by proximate neutral hydrogen gas. Many galaxy spectra in the EoR taken by JWST have shown a flux deficit at wavelengths just redward of the Lyman break, and this has been regarded as resulting from Ly$\alpha$ damping wing absorption by the increasing amount of neutral hydrogen in the line-of-sight. However, previous attenuation models for the intergalactic medium (IGM) commonly used in photometric redshift template-fitting codes assume that the Lyman break is rather sharp, which leads to systematic overestimation of photometric redshifts at $z>7$. In this letter, we build and empirically calibrate a new attenuation model that takes the increased Ly$\alpha$ damping wing absorption into account. Our model consists of the canonical IGM absorption and an additional absorption component due to dense neutral hydrogen gas clouds proximate to the galaxy, and we derive the redshift evolution of HI column density of the proximate clouds by calibrating the model using CANUCS JWST observations. The resulting total transmission curve resolves the photometric redshift bias at $z>7$, an improvement that is robust to choice of template-fitting code, template set, and photometric catalog used. The new attenuation model can be easily implemented in existing template-fitting codes, and significantly improves the photometric redshift performance in the EoR., Comment: Submitted to ApJL. We present galaxy MACS0416-Y1 at z$_{\rm{spec}} = 8.312$ as observed by the CAnadian NIRISS Unbiased Cluster Survey (CANUCS). MACS0416-Y1 has been shown to have extreme dust properties, thus, we study the physical properties and star formation histories of its resolved components. Overall, we find that MACS0416-Y1 is undergoing a star formation burst in three resolved clumps. The central clump is less massive compared to the other clumps and possibly formed in the merging process of the two larger clumps. Although the star formation history indicates an ongoing star formation burst, this gas-rich galaxy shows comparable star formation efficiency to cosmic noon galaxies. Using NIRSpec prism spectroscopy, we measure metallicity, $12 +\log\rm{(O/H)} = 7.76\pm0.03$ , ionisation parameter, $\log U = -2.48\pm0.03$, and electron temperature $\rm{T}_e = 18000\pm 4000 K $. The emission line ratios of the galaxy indicate an evolved Interstellar medium (ISM) similar to $z\sim2$ star-forming galaxies. Further, we find possible presence of ionisation from an active galactic nuclei (AGN) using emission line diagnostics, however, we do not detect broad line component in H$\beta$ emission line. As this gas-rich galaxy is undergoing a major merger, we hypothesise that the high dust temperature in MACS0416-Y1 is caused by the star formation burst or a possible narrow-line AGN.

The Cosmic Dawn Survey (DAWN survey) provides multiwavelength (UV/optical to mid-IR) data across the combined 59 deg$^{2}$ of the Euclid Deep and Auxiliary fields (EDFs and EAFs). Here, the first public data release (DR1) from the DAWN survey is presented. DR1 catalogues are made available for a subset of the full DAWN survey that consists of two Euclid Deep fields: Euclid Deep Field North (EDF-N) and Euclid Deep Field Fornax (EDF-F). The DAWN survey DR1 catalogues do not include $Euclid$ data as they are not yet public for these fields. Nonetheless, each field has been covered by the ongoing Hawaii Twenty Square Degree Survey (H20), which includes imaging from CFHT MegaCam in the new $u$ filter and from Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) in the $griz$ filters. Each field is further covered by $Spitzer$/IRAC 3.6-4.5$\mu$m imaging spanning 10 deg$^{2}$ and reaching $\sim$25 mag AB (5$\sigma$). All present H20 imaging and all publicly available imaging from the aforementioned facilities are combined with the deep $Spitzer$/IRAC data to create source catalogues spanning a total area of 16.87 deg$^{2}$ in EDF-N and 2.85 deg$^{2}$ in EDF-F for this first release. Photometry is measured using The Farmer, a well-validated model-based photometry code. Photometric redshifts and stellar masses are computed using two independent codes for modeling spectral energy distributions: EAZY and LePhare. Photometric redshifts show good agreement with spectroscopic redshifts ($\sigma_{\rm NMAD} \sim 0.5, \eta < 8\%$ at $i < 25$). Number counts, photometric redshifts, and stellar masses are further validated in comparison to the COSMOS2020 catalogue. The DAWN survey DR1 catalogues are designed to be of immediate use in these two EDFs and will be continuously updated. Future data releases will provide catalogues of all EDFs and EAFs and include $Euclid$ data.

Euclid will provide deep NIR imaging to $\sim$26.5 AB magnitude over $\sim$59 deg$^2$ in its deep and auxiliary fields. The Cosmic DAWN survey complements the deep Euclid data with matched depth multiwavelength imaging and spectroscopy in the UV--IR to provide consistently processed Euclid selected photometric catalogs, accurate photometric redshifts, and measurements of galaxy properties to a redshift of $z\sim 10$. We examine the local density environments around 67 quasars at $z\sim3$, by combining the imaging data of Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) and Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Large Area U-band Survey (CLAUDS) over about 20 deg$^{2}$. Our measurements exploit $U$-dropout galaxies in the vicinities of quasars taken from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We find that the quasars have the indistinguishable surrounding density distribution from the $U$-dropout galaxies, and that three quasars are associated with protocluster candidates within a projected separation of 3 arcmin. According to a halo evolutionary model, our results suggest that quasars at this epoch occupy haloes with a typical mass of $1.3^{+1.4}_{-0.9} \times 10^{13} h^{-1} \mathrm{M_{\odot}}$. We also investigate the dependence of the local galaxy overdensity on ultraviolet (UV) luminosities, black hole (BH) masses, and proximity zone sizes of the quasars, but no statistically-significant correlation was found. Finally, we find that the local density of faint $U$-dropout galaxies are lower than that of bright $U$-dropout galaxies within a projected distance of $0.51\pm0.05$ physical Mpc, where the quasar UV radiation is 30 times intenser than backgroung UV radiation. We study the major merger fraction along the massive galaxy quenching channel (traced with rest-frame $\mathrm{NUV}-r$ color) at $z=$ 0.2-0.7, aiming to examine the Cosmic Web Detachment (CWD) scenario of galaxy quenching. In this scenario, the major merger fraction is expected to be high in green valley galaxies as compared with those in star-forming and quiescent galaxies of similar stellar mass. We used photometry in the E-COSMOS field to select 1491 (2334) massive ($M_\ast>10^{9.5}$ $M_\odot$) galaxies with $m_i<22$ mag ($m_z<22$ mag) at $z=$ 0.2-0.4 ($z=$ 0.4-0.7) in the rest-frame color range of $0.8

We present the number densities and physical properties of the bright galaxies spectroscopically confirmed at $z\sim7-14$. Our sample is composed of 60 galaxies at $z_\mathrm{spec}\sim7-14$, including recently-confirmed galaxies at $z_\mathrm{spec}=12.34-14.32$ with JWST, as well as new confirmations at $z_\mathrm{spec}=6.583-7.643$ with $-24< M_\mathrm{UV}< -21$ mag using ALMA and Keck. Our JWST/NIRSpec observations have also revealed that very bright galaxy candidates at $z\sim10-13$ identified from ground-based telescope images before JWST are passive galaxies at $z\sim3-4$, emphasizing the necessity of strict screening and spectroscopy in the selection of the brightest galaxies at $z>10$. The UV luminosity functions derived from these spectroscopic results are consistent with a double power-law function, showing tensions with theoretical models at the bright end. To understand the origin of the overabundance of bright galaxies, we investigate their morphologies using JWST/NIRCam high-resolution images obtained in various surveys including PRIMER and COSMOS-Web. We find that $\sim70\%$ of the bright galaxies at $z\sim7$ exhibit clumpy morphologies with multiple sub-components, suggesting merger-induced starburst activity, which is consistent with SED fitting results showing bursty star formation histories. At $z\gtrsim10$, bright galaxies are classified into two types of galaxies; extended ones with weak high-ionization emission lines, and compact ones with strong high-ionization lines including NIV]$\lambda$1486, indicating that at least two different processes (e.g., merger-induced starburst and compact star formation/AGN) are shaping the physical properties of the brightest galaxies at $z\gtrsim10$ and are responsible for their overabundance., Comment: 34 pages, 22 figures, Accepted for Publication in ApJ

The epoch of reionisation progressed through the emission of ionising photons from galaxies to their local intergalactic medium. In this work, we characterise the dwarf star-forming galaxies as candidates for the source of ionising photons that drove EoR. We investigate the ionising properties and star formation histories of star-forming dwarf galaxies at the last stages of EoR at $4.8<\rm{z}<7$ using observations from the CAnadian NIRISS Unbiased Cluster Survey (CANUCS). The magnification due to gravitational lensing allows us to probe large dynamic ranges in stellar mass ($2\times 10^{6}\leq\rm{M}_*/\rm{M}_\odot\leq5\times 10^{9}$) and UV magnitudes ($-22.68\leq$M$_{UV}\leq=-15.95$).We find a median UV slope \buv of $-2. 56\pm0.23$ and the production efficiency of ionising photons $\log$ \xiion $=25.39\pm0.6$ for the full sample ($4.8<\rm{z}<7$) with a median stellar mass of $6.3\pm0.5\times10^{7} \rm{M}_\odot$. We find both \buv and \xiion are marginally correlated with the stellar mass of the galaxy, indicating a possible greater contribution of dwarf galaxies to the reionisation of the Universe. We find that on average, galaxies in our sample are experiencing a recent rise/burst of star formation which translates to a higher scatter in \xiion and a large scatter in H$\alpha$ equivalent widths. Finally, we investigate the trends of H$\alpha$ and [OIII]+H$\beta$ EWs with UV magnitude and find M$_{UV}$ is correlated between H$\alpha$ but not with [OIII]+H$\beta$ EWs indicating low metallicities and recent burst in the UV faint galaxies., Comment: Accepted For Publication in MNRAS

Spatially resolved studies are key to understanding when, where, and how stars form within galaxies. Using slitless grism spectra and broadband imaging from the CAnadian NIRISS Unbiased Cluster Survey (CANUCS) we study the spatially resolved properties of a strongly lensed ($\mu$ = 5.4$\pm$1.8) z = 0.8718 galaxy pair consisting of a blue face-on galaxy (10.2 $\pm$ 0.2 log($M/M_\odot$)) with multiple star-forming clumps and a dusty red edge-on galaxy (9.9 $\pm$ 0.3 log($M/M_\odot$)). We produce accurate H$\alpha$ maps from JWST/NIRISS grism data using a new methodology that accurately models spatially varying continuum and emission line strengths. With spatially resolved indicators, we probe star formation on timescales of $\sim$ 10 Myr (NIRISS H$\alpha$ emission line maps) and $\sim$ 100 Myr (UV imaging and broadband SED fits). Taking the ratio of the H$\alpha$ to UV flux ($\eta$), we measure spatially resolved star formation burstiness. We find that in the face-on galaxy both H$\alpha$ and broadband star formation rates (SFRs) drop at large galactocentric radii by a factor of $\sim$ 4.7 and 3.8 respectively, while SFR over the last $\sim$ 100 Myrs has increased by a factor of 1.6. Additionally, of the 20 clumps identified in the galaxy pair we find that 7 are experiencing bursty star formation, while 10 clumps are quenching and 3 are in equilibrium (either being in a state of steady star formation or post-burst). Our analysis reveals that the blue face-on galaxy disk is predominantly in a quenching or equilibrium phase. However, the most intense quenching within the galaxy is seen in the quenching clumps. We report magnetization changes generated by an electric field in ferromagnetic Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$N grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Two classes of phenomena have been revealed. First, over a wide range of magnetic fields, the magnetoelectric signal is odd in the electric field and reversible. Employing a macroscopic spin model and atomistic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert theory with Langevin dynamics, we demonstrate that the magnetoelectric response results from the inverse piezoelectric effect that changes the trigonal single-ion magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Second, in the metastable regime of ferromagnetic hystereses, the magnetoelectric effect becomes non-linear and irreversible in response to a time-dependent electric field, which can reorient the magnetization direction. Interestingly, our observations are similar to those reported for another dilute ferromagnetic semiconductor Cr$_x$(Bi$_{1-y}$Sb$_y$)$_{1-x}$Te$_3$, in which magnetization was monitored as a function of the gate electric field. Those results constitute experimental support for theories describing the effects of time-dependent perturbation upon glasses far from thermal equilibrium in terms of an enhanced effective temperature., Comment: 18 pages, 10 Figures

Strong gravitational lensing in galaxy clusters has become an essential tool in astrophysics, allowing us to directly probe the dark matter distribution and study magnified background sources. The precision and reliability of strong lensing models rely heavily on the number and quality of multiple images of background sources with spectroscopic redshifts. We present an updated strong lensing model of the galaxy cluster MACS J0416.1-2403 with the largest sample of multiple images with spectroscopic redshifts in a galaxy cluster field to date. Furthermore, we aim to demonstrate the effectiveness of JWST particularly its NIRISS camera, for strong lensing studies. We use the JWST 's NIRCam imaging and NIRSpec and NIRISS spectroscopy from the CAnadian NIRISS Unbiased Cluster Survey (CANUCS). The cluster mass model is constrained using Lenstool software. Our new dataset, used for constraining the lens model, comprises 303 secure multiple images from 111 background sources and includes systems with previously known MUSE redshift and systems for which we obtained spectroscopic redshift for the first time using NIRISS and NIRSpec spectroscopy. The total number of secure spectroscopic systems is >20% higher than in the previous strong lensing studies of this cluster. The derived strong lensing model can reproduce multiple images with the root-mean-square distance of 0.53''. We also provide a full catalogue with 415 multiple images, including less reliable candidates. We furthermore demonstrate the effectiveness of JWST particularly NIRISS, for strong lensing studies. As NIRISS F115W, F150W, and F200W grism spectroscopy captures at least two of the [OII] {\lambda}3727, [OIII] {\lambda}{\lambda}4959, 5007, and H{\alpha} lines at 1

This paper explores the potential for spin-triplet superconductivity in molecular beam epitaxy-grown IV-VI semiconductor superlattices. The findings present compelling evidence for spin-triplet pairing in PbTe/SnTe by the method of soft point-contact spectroscopy and spin-polarised point-contact spectroscopy. The experimental data are understood with the Anderson-Brinkman-Morel model of p-wave electron pairing. Galaxy clusters are crucial to understanding role of the environment in galaxy evolution. However, due to their rarity, only a limited number of clusters have been identified at $z\gtrsim2$. In this paper, we report a discovery of seven cluster candidates with massive quiescent galaxies at $z\sim2$ in the $3.5\,\mathrm{deg}^{2}$ area of the XMM-LSS field, roughly doubling the known cluster sample at this frontier redshift if confirmed. We construct a photometric redshift catalog based on deep ($i\sim26$, $K_\mathrm{s}\sim24$) multi-wavelength photometry from $u^*$-band to $K$-band gathered from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program and other collaborative/public surveys. We adopt a Gaussian kernel density estimate with two different spatial scales (10" and 60") to draw a density map of massive ($\log(M_{*}/M_{\odot})>10.5$) and quiescent ($\log(\mathrm{sSFR\, [\mathrm{yr^{-1}}]})<-10$) galaxies at $z\sim2$. Then, We identify seven prominent overdensities. These candidates show clear red sequences in color-magnitude diagrams ($z-H$ vs. $H$). Moreover, one of them shows an extended X-ray emission with $L_\mathrm{X}=(1.46\pm0.35)\times10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$, suggesting its virialized nature. There is no clear evidence of enhancement nor suppression of the star formation rate of the main sequence galaxies in the clusters. We find that cluster galaxies have a higher fraction of transition population with $-10.5<\log(\mathrm{sSFR\, [\mathrm{yr^{-1}}]})<-10$ ($12\%$) than the field ($2\%$), which implies the ongoing star formation quenching. The quiescent fraction in the cluster candidates also exceeds that in the field. We confirm that the excess of a quiescent fraction is larger for higher-mass galaxies. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry shows that epitaxial CuMnSb films exhibit a coexistence of two magnetic phases, coherently intertwined in nanometric scales. The dominant $\alpha$~phase is half-Heusler cubic antiferromagnet with the N\'{e}el temperature of 62~K, the equilibrium structure of bulk CuMnSb. The secondary phase is its ferromagnetic tetragonal $\beta$ polymorph with the Curie temperature of about 100~K. First principles calculations provide a consistent interpretation of experiment, since (i) total energy of $\beta$--CuMnSb is higher than that of $\alpha$--CuMnSb only by 0.12~eV per formula unit, which allows for epitaxial stabilization of this phase, (ii) the metallic character of $\beta$--CuMnSb favors the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida ferromagnetic coupling, and (iii) the calculated effective Curie-Weiss magnetic moment of Mn ions in both phases is about $5.5~\mu_\mathrm{B}$, favorably close to the measured value. Calculated properties of all point native defects indicate that the most likely to occur are $\mathrm{Mn}_\mathrm{Cu}$ antisites. They affect magnetic properties of epilayers, but they cannot induce the ferromagnetic order in CuMnSb. The current standard model of cosmology successfully describes a variety of measurements, but the nature of its main ingredients, dark matter and dark energy, remains unknown. Euclid is a medium-class mission in the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme of the European Space Agency (ESA) that will provide high-resolution optical imaging, as well as near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, over about 14,000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky. In addition to accurate weak lensing and clustering measurements that probe structure formation over half of the age of the Universe, its primary probes for cosmology, these exquisite data will enable a wide range of science. This paper provides a high-level overview of the mission, summarising the survey characteristics, the various data-processing steps, and data products. Diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS) have attracted significant attention for their potential in spintronic applications. Particularly, magnetically-doped GaN is highly attractive due to its high relevance for the CMOS industry and the possibility of developing advanced spintronic devices which are fully compatible with the current industrial procedures. Despite this interest, there remains a need to investigate the spintronic parameters that characterize interfaces within these systems. Here, we perform spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) measurements to evaluate the spin transfer at a Pt/(Ga,Mn)N interface. We determine the transparency of the interface through the estimation of the real part of the spin mixing conductance finding $G_r = 2.6\times 10^{14} \, \Omega^{-1} m^{-2}$, comparable to state-of-the-art yttrium iron garnet (YIG)/Pt interfaces. Moreover, the magnetic ordering probed by SMR above the (Ga,Mn)N Curie temperature TC provides a broader temperature range for the efficient generation and detection of spin currents, relaxing the conditions for this material to be applied in new spintronic devices., Comment: 14 pages, 3 main figures

We present follow-up spectroscopy on a protocluster candidate selected from the wide-field imaging of the Hyper SuprimeCam Subaru Strategic Programme. The target protocluster candidate was identified as a $4.5\sigma$ overdense region of $g$-dropout galaxies, and the redshifts of $g$-dropout galaxies are determined by detecting their Ly$\alpha$ emission. Thirteen galaxies, at least, are found to be clustering in the narrow redshift range of $\Delta z<0.05$ at $z=3.699$. This is clear evidence of the presence of a protocluster in the target region. Following the discovery of the protocluster at $z=3.699$, the physical properties and three-dimensional distribution of its member galaxies are investigated. Based on spectroscopically-confirmed $g$-dropout galaxies, we find an overabundance of rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) bright galaxies in the protocluster. The UV brightest protocluster member turns out to be an active galactic nucleus, and the other UV brighter members tend to show smaller Ly$\alpha$ equivalent widths than field counterparts. The member galaxies tend to densely populate near the centre of the protocluster, but the separation from the nearest neighbour rather than the distance from the centre of the protocluster is more tightly correlated to galaxy properties, implying that the protocluster is still in an early phase of cluster formation and only close neighbours have a significant impact on the physical properties of protocluster members. The number density of massive galaxies, selected from an archival photometric-redshift catalogue, is higher near the centre of the protocluster, while dusty starburst galaxies are distributed on the outskirts. Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) are promising probes for clustering measurements at high redshift, $z>2$, a region only covered so far by Lyman-$\alpha$ forest measurements. In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of selecting LBGs by exploiting the existence of a strong deficit of flux shortward of the Lyman limit, due to various absorption processes along the line of sight. The target selection relies on deep imaging data from the HSC and CLAUDS surveys in the $g,r,z$ and $u$ bands, respectively, with median depths reaching 27 AB in all bands. The selections were validated by several dedicated spectroscopic observation campaigns with DESI. Visual inspection of spectra has enabled us to develop an automated spectroscopic typing and redshift estimation algorithm specific to LBGs. Based on these data and tools, we assess the efficiency and purity of target selections optimised for different purposes. Selections providing a wide redshift coverage retain $57\%$ of the observed targets after spectroscopic confirmation with DESI, and provide an efficiency for LBGs of $83\pm3\%$, for a purity of the selected LBG sample of $90\pm2\%$. This would deliver a confirmed LBG density of $\sim 620$ deg$^{-2}$ in the range $2.3

This study introduces a robust planning framework that utilizes a model predictive control (MPC) approach, enhanced by incorporating signal temporal logic (STL) specifications. This marks the first-ever study to apply STL-guided trajectory optimization for bipedal locomotion, specifically designed to handle both translational and orientational perturbations. Existing recovery strategies often struggle with reasoning complex task logic and evaluating locomotion robustness systematically, making them susceptible to failures caused by inappropriate recovery strategies or lack of robustness. To address these issues, we design an analytical stability metric for bipedal locomotion and quantify this metric using STL specifications, which guide the generation of recovery trajectories to achieve maximum robustness degree. To enable safe and computational-efficient crossed-leg maneuver, we design data-driven self-leg-collision constraints that are $1000$ times faster than the traditional inverse-kinematics-based approach. Our framework outperforms a state-of-the-art locomotion controller, a standard MPC without STL, and a linear-temporal-logic-based planner in a high-fidelity dynamic simulation, especially in scenarios involving crossed-leg maneuvers. Additionally, the Cassie bipedal robot achieves robust performance under horizontal and orientational perturbations such as those observed in ship motions. These environments are validated in simulations and deployed on hardware. Furthermore, our proposed method demonstrates versatility on stepping stones and terrain-agnostic features on inclined terrains.

Static black holes in general relativity modified by a linear scalar coupling to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant always carry hair. We show that the same mechanism that creates the hair makes it incompatible with a cosmological horizon. Other scalar-tensor models do not have this problem when time-dependence of the scalar provides a natural matching to cosmology. Scalar-Gauss-Bonnet is particularly rigid and such a scenario does not help. An extra operator makes the theory behave like the other models and the cosmological horizon can be accommodated. We measure the evolution of the rest-frame $NUV-V$ colors for early-type galaxies in clusters at $03$. The blue UV colors of early-type galaxies at low-intermediate redshifts are likely driven by this sub-population being enriched in helium up to $\sim44\%$. We report an updated mass and magnification model of galaxy cluster Abell 370 using new NIRCam and NIRISS data from the CAnadian NIRISS Unbiased Cluster Survey (CANUCS). Using Lenstool and a combination of archival HST and MUSE data with new JWST data as constraints, we derive an improved gravitational lensing model and extract magnifications of background galaxies with uncertainties. Using our best fit model, we perform a search for new multiply imaged systems via predicted positions. We report no new multiply imaged systems with identifiable redshifts, likely due to already very deep HST and Spitzer data, but confirm a $z\sim8$ multiply imaged system by measuring its redshift with NIRISS and NIRSpec spectra. We find that the overall shape of the critical curve for a source at $z = 9.0$ is similar to previous models of Abell 370, with small changes. We investigate the $z\sim8$ galaxy with two images observable with an apparent magnitude in the F125W band of $26.0\pm0.2$ and $25.6\pm0.1$. After correcting for the magnifications of the images, 7.2$^{+0.2}_{-1.2}$ and 8.7$^{+0.4}_{-0.4}$, we use SED fitting to find an intrinsic stellar mass of log($M^*/M_{\odot})$ = 7.35$^{+0.04}_{-0.05}$, intrinsic SFR of 3.5$^{+2.2}_{-1.4}$ M$_{\odot}$/yr, and $M_{UV}$ of -21.3$^{+0.2}_{-0.2}$, which is close to the knee of the luminosity function at that redshift. We investigated the gas obscuration and host galaxy properties of active galactic nuclei (AGN) during the peak of cosmic accretion growth of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) at redshift 0.8-1.8 using X-ray detected AGN with mid-infrared and far-infrared detection. The sample was classified as type-1 and type-2 AGN using optical spectral and morphological classification while the host galaxy properties were estimated with multiwavelength SED fitting. For type-1 AGN, the black hole mass was determined from MgII emission lines while the black hole mass of type-2 AGN was inferred from the host galaxy's stellar mass. Based on the derived parameters, the distribution of the sample in the absorption hydrogen column density ($N_{\rm H}$) vs. Eddington ratio diagram is examined. Among the type-2 AGN, $28\pm5$\% are in the forbidden zone, where the obscuration by dust torus cannot be maintained due to radiation pressure on dusty material. The fraction is higher than that observed in the local universe from the BAT AGN Spectroscopic Survey (BASS) data release 2 ($11\pm3$\%). The higher fraction implies that the obscuration of the majority of AGN is consistent with the radiation pressure regulated unified model but with an increased incidence of interstellar matter (ISM) obscured AGN. We discuss the possibility of dust-free absorption in type-1 AGN and heavy ISM absorption in type-2 AGN. We also find no statistical difference in the star-formation activity between type-1 and type-2 AGN which may suggest that obscuration triggered by a gas-rich merging is not common among X-ray detected AGN in this epoch., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The most distant galaxies detected by JWST are assembling in a Universe that is less than 5\% of its present age. At these times, the progenitors of galaxies like the Milky Way are expected to be about 10,000 times less massive than they are now, with masses quite comparable to that of massive globular clusters seen in the local Universe. Composed today primarily of old stars and correlating with the properties of their parent dark matter halos, the first globular clusters are thought to have formed during the earliest stages of galaxy assembly. In this article we explore the connection between star clusters and galaxy assembly by showing JWST observations of a strongly lensed galaxy at zspec = 8.304, exhibiting a network of massive star clusters (the 'Firefly Sparkle') cocooned in a diffuse arc. The Firefly Sparkle exhibits the hallmarks expected of a future Milky Way-type galaxy captured during its earliest and most gas-rich stage of formation. The mass distribution of the galaxy seems to be concentrated in ten distinct clusters, with individual cluster masses that straddle the boundary between low-mass galaxies and high-mass globular clusters. The cluster ages suggest that they are gravitationally bound with star formation histories showing a recent starburst possibly triggered by the interaction with a companion galaxy at the same redshift at a projected distance of $\sim$2 kpc away from the Firefly Sparkle. The central star cluster shows nebular-dominated spectra consistent with high temperatures and a top-heavy initial mass function, the product of formation in a very metal poor environment. Combined with abundance matching that suggests that this is likely to be a progenitor of galaxies like our own, the Firefly Sparkle provides an unprecedented case study of a Milky Way-like galaxy in the earliest stages of its assembly in only a 600 million year old Universe., Comment: submitted, comments are welcome! 36 pages, 9 figures

The Cosmological Advanced Survey Telescope for Optical and ultraviolet Research (CASTOR) is a proposed Canadian-led 1m-class space telescope that will carry out ultraviolet and blue-optical wide-field imaging, spectroscopy, and photometry. CASTOR will provide an essential bridge in the post-Hubble era, preventing a protracted UV-optical gap in space astronomy and enabling an enormous range of discovery opportunities from the solar system to the nature of the Cosmos, in conjunction with the other great wide-field observatories of the next decade (e.g., Euclid, Roman, Vera Rubin). FORECASTOR (Finding Optics Requirements and Exposure times for CASTOR) will supply a coordinated suite of mission-planning tools that will serve as the one-stop shop for proposal preparation, data reduction, and analysis for the CASTOR mission. We present the first of these tools: a pixel-based, user-friendly, extensible, multi-mission exposure time calculator (ETC) built in Python, including a modern browser-based graphical user interface that updates in real time. This paper presents a comprehensive comparative analysis of explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) ensembling methods. Our research brings three significant contributions. Firstly, we introduce a novel ensembling method, NormEnsembleXAI, that leverages minimum, maximum, and average functions in conjunction with normalization techniques to enhance interpretability. Secondly, we offer insights into the strengths and weaknesses of XAI ensemble methods. Lastly, we provide a library, facilitating the practical implementation of XAI ensembling, thus promoting the adoption of transparent and interpretable deep learning models.

We present a methodology for modeling and removing light from cluster galaxies and intracluster light (ICL) from $James\ Webb\ Space\ Telescope$ ($JWST$) images of gravitational lensing clusters. We apply our method to Webb's First Deep Field the SMACS 0723 Early Release Observations and use the ICL subtracted images to select a sample of globular clusters (GCs) and dwarf galaxies within the cluster. We compare the spatial distributions of these two samples with our models of the galaxy and ICL light, finding significant similarity. Specifically we find that GCs trace the diffuse ICL, while dwarf galaxies are centrally concentrated near the cluster center We quantify the relationship between the surface density of compact sources and total cluster light, demonstrating a significant, tight correlation. We repeat our methodology and compare distributions of GCs with dark matter surface density and find a comparable result. Lyman-Alpha Emitting galaxies (LAEs) are typically young, low-mass, star-forming galaxies with little extinction from interstellar dust. Their low dust attenuation allows their Ly$\alpha$ emission to shine brightly in spectroscopic and photometric observations, providing an observational window into the high-redshift universe. Narrowband surveys reveal large, uniform samples of LAEs at specific redshifts that probe large scale structure and the temporal evolution of galaxy properties. The One-hundred-deg$^2$ DECam Imaging in Narrowbands (ODIN) utilizes three custom-made narrowband filters on the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) to discover LAEs at three equally spaced periods in cosmological history. In this paper, we introduce the hybrid-weighted double-broadband continuum estimation technique, which yields improved estimation of Ly$\alpha$ equivalent widths. Using this method, we discover 6032, 5691, and 4066 LAE candidates at $z =$ 2.4, 3.1, and 4.5 in the extended COSMOS field ($\sim$9 deg$^2$). We find that [O II] emitters are a minimal contaminant in our LAE samples, but that interloping Green Pea-like [O III] emitters are important for our redshift 4.5 sample. We introduce an innovative method for identifying [O II] and [O III] emitters via a combination of narrowband excess and galaxy colors, enabling their study as separate classes of objects. We present scaled median stacked SEDs for each galaxy sample, revealing the overall success of our selection methods. We also calculate rest-frame Ly$\alpha$ equivalent widths for our LAE samples and find that the EW distributions are best fit by exponential functions with scale lengths of $w_0$ = 53 $\pm$ 1, 65 $\pm$ 1, and 59 $\pm$ 1 Angstroms, respectively., Comment: Accepted to ApJ, 24 pages, 14 figures
