Abstract

The influence of space weathering on the observed spectra of C-complex asteroids remains uncertain. This has long hindered our understanding of their composition through telescope observations. Multi-band imaging of Ryugu by ONC-T on Hayabusa2 and that of Bennu by MapCam on OSIRIS-REx found opposite spectral trends of space weathering; Ryugu darkened/reddened while Bennu brightened/blued. How the spectra of Ryugu and Bennu evolved relative to each other would place a constraint for understanding their origins and evolutions. In this study, we compared the space weathering trends on Ryugu and Bennu by applying the results of cross calibration between ONC-T and MapCam. We show that the average Bennu surface is brighter by 18.0 $\pm$ 1.5% at 550 nm and bluer by 0.18 $\pm$ 0.03 $\mu$m$^{-1}$ (480-850 nm slope) than Ryugu. The spectral slopes of surface materials are more uniform on Bennu than on Ryugu at spatial scales $\gtrsim$1 m, but Bennu is more heterogeneous at $\lesssim$1 m. This suggests that lateral mixing due to resurfacing may have been more efficient on Bennu. The reflectance-spectral slope distributions of craters on Ryugu and Bennu appeared to follow two trend lines with an offset before cross calibration, but they converged to a single straight trend without a bend after cross calibration. We show that the spectra of the freshest craters on Ryugu and Bennu are indistinguishable within the uncertainty of cross calibration. These results suggest that Ryugu and Bennu initially had similar spectra before space weathering and that they evolved in completely opposite directions along the same trend line, subsequently evolving into asteroids with different disk-averaged spectra. These findings further suggest that space weathering likely expanded the spectral slope variation of C-complex asteroids, implying that they may have formed from materials with more uniform spectral slopes.

Abstract

Asteroids (162173) Ryugu and (101955) Bennu observed by Hayabusa2 and OSIRIS-REx share many properties, but spectral observations by the telescopic Optical Navigation Camera (ONC-T) and MapCam detected subtle but significant differences, which may reflect differences in their origin and evolution. Comparing these differences on the same absolute scale is necessary for understanding their causes. However, ONC-T and MapCam have a large imager-to-imager systematic error of up to 15% caused by the difference in radiometric calibration targets. To resolve this problem, we cross calibrated albedo and color data between the two instruments using the Moon as the common calibration standard. The images of the Moon taken by ONC-T and MapCam were compared with those simulated using photometry models developed from lunar orbiter data. Our results show that the cross-calibrated reflectance of Ryugu and Bennu can be obtained by upscaling the pre-cross-calibrated reflectance of Bennu by 13.3 +/- 1.6% at b band, 13.2 +/- 1.5% at v band, 13.6 +/- 1.7% at w band, and 14.8 +/- 1.8% at x band, while those for Ryugu are kept the same. These factors compensate for the imager-to-imager bias caused by differences in targets used for radiometric calibration and solar irradiance models used for data reduction. Need for such large upscaling underscore the importance of using the cross-calibrated data for accurately comparing the Ryugu and Bennu data. The uncertainty in these factors show that the reflectance of Ryugu and Bennu can be compared with <2% accuracy after applying our results. By applying our cross calibration, the geometric albedo of Bennu became consistent with those observed by ground-based telescopes and OVIRS. Our result can be simply applied by multiplying a constant to the publicly available data and enables accurate comparison of the optical spectra of Ryugu and Bennu in future studies.

5. Localization of Sepiapterin Deaminase and Pteridines In the Granules In Epidermal Cells of the Silkworm, Bombyx mori

Abstract

A new method for assay of sepiapterin deaminase (3.5.4.24) activity by use of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was developed. By this sensitive method the enzyme activity in the cell organelle was assayed. After cell fractionation, the enzyme was extracted with deoxycholate from pteridine granules of epidermal cells of the lemon mutant silkworm. On stepwise sucrose gradient centrifugation, most of the enzyme activity localized in the aggregated pteridine granules fraction, while the soluble fraction contained only one fourth of the total enzyme activity. The enzyme in the granule fraction had the same properties as the previously reported sepiapterin deaminase. These data show that the enzyme is localized in pteridine granules in the living cells. The attachment of the enzyme to the granule membrane is rather loose and previous papers studied the enzyme released from the granules. Cell fractionation and morphological observation showed that sepiapterin, sepialumazine and other pteridines were also localized in the granules together with uric acid.

Abstract

The ion beam driven nuclear analysis has been developed for many years by using various electrostatic accelerators. A proton micro-beam with the beam diameter of ∼1.5 μm at Takasaki Ion Acceleration for Advanced Radiation Application (TIARA), JAEA was used to analyze the positive electrode of the Li-ion battery with PIGE and PIXE. WThe PIGE and PIXE images of Li and Ni respectively for LixNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2(x = 0.75 ∼ 1.0) anodes have been taken. The PIGE images of LixNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 particles and the depth profile of the Li density have been obtained with high spatial resolution (a few μm). The images of the Li density distribution are very useful for the R&D of the Li ion battery. In order to make the in-situ ion beam analysis of the Li battery possible, a compact accelerator for a high quality MeV proton beam is necessary. Form this point of view, the diagnostics of Li ion battery is an appropriate field for the applications of laser produced ion beams.

Abstract

We discuss approaches for blind source separation where we can use more sensors than sources to obtain a better performance. The discussion focuses mainly on reducing the dimensions of mixed signals before applying independent component analysis. We compare two previously proposed methods. The first is based on principal component analysis, where noise reduction is achieved. The second is based on geometric considerations and selects a subset of sensors in accordance with the fact that a low frequency prefers a wide spacing, and a high frequency prefers a narrow spacing. We found that the PCA-based method behaves similarly to the geometry-based method for low frequencies in the way that it emphasizes the outer sensors and yields superior results for high frequencies. These results provide a better understanding of the former method.

Abstract

In our article we report first quantitative measurements of imaging performance for the current generation of hybrid pixel detector, Medipix3, as direct electron detector. Utilising beam energies of 60 & 80 keV, measurements of modulation transfer function (MTF) and detective quantum efficiency (DQE) have revealed that, in single pixel mode (SPM), energy threshold values can be chosen to maximize either the MTF or DQE, obtaining values near to, or even exceeding, those for an ideal detector. We have demonstrated that the Medipix3 charge summing mode (CSM) can deliver simultaneous, near ideal values of both MTF and DQE. To understand direct detection performance further we have characterized the detector response to single electron events, building an empirical model which can predict detector MTF and DQE performance based on energy threshold. Exemplifying our findings we demonstrate the Medipix3 imaging performance, recording a fully exposed electron diffraction pattern at 24-bit depth and images in SPM and CSM modes. Taken together our findings highlight that for transmission electron microscopy performed at low energies (energies <100 keV) thick hybrid pixel detectors provide an advantageous and alternative architecture for direct electron imaging

Abstract

The high-pressure phases of FeO and MnO were studied by the first principles calculations. The present theoretical study predicts that the high-pressure phase of MnO is a metallic normal B8 structure (nB8), while that of FeO should take the inverse B8 structure (iB8). The novel feature of the unique high-pressure phase of stoichiometric FeO is that the system should be a band insulator in the ordered antiferromagnetic (AF) state and that the existence of a band gap leads to special stability of the phase. The observed metallicity of the high-pressure and high-temperature phase of FeO may be caused by the loss of AF order and also by the itinerant carriers created by non-stoichiometry. Analysis of x-ray diffraction experiments provides a further support to the present theoretical prediction for both FeO and MnO. Abstract

Ultrahigh-energy density (UHED) states greater than 1 Gbar pressure are typically observed under extreme conditions, such as in the core of an inertial confinement fusion implosion. A novel alternative approach for generating volumetric UHED states is to use nanowire arrays irradiated with a femtosecond ultrahigh-intensity laser. In this paper, we present an experimental investigation on laser absorption and energy transport in nanowire arrays irradiated with a picosecond kilojoule petawatt laser. The laser–target interactions were studied by measuring the x-ray emission and escaping hot electrons from a bare Cu foil and a foil with a nanowire array grown on its surface. The measured Cu-Kα and He-α emissions from the nanowire array were higher than those from the flat foil. In addition, hot electrons observed from the front surface of the nanowire array were enhanced. On the other hand, despite the stronger Kα emission from the nanowire array and the enhancement of hot electrons escaping from the front surface of the nanowire array, the number of hot electrons observed from the rear side of the flat foil target was slightly lower than that of the flat foil. A comparison of the experimental results with the results of a two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation code suggested that the magnetic fields generated around the periodic nanowire array trap hot electrons, improving the electron-to-target energy coupling and efficiently producing UHED states. Abstract

Proximity observations of (162173) Ryugu by the telescopic Optical Navigation Camera onboard Hayabusa2 and (101955) Bennu by MapCam onboard Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer found opposite spectral trends of space weathering on these carbonaceous asteroids. Whether the space weathering trends on these asteroids evolved from the same starting spectra would place an important constraint for understanding their relation. However, systematic error between data obtained by the two imagers needed to be reduced for accurate comparison. To resolve this problem, we cross calibrated albedo and color data using the Moon as the common standard. We show that the cross-calibrated reflectance can be obtained by upscaling the pre-cross-calibrated reflectance of Bennu by 12 +/- 2% at v-band, reducing the systematic errors down to 2%. The cross-calibrated data show that Bennu is brighter by 16 +/- 2% at v-band and bluer in spectral slope by 0.19 +/- 0.05 (/um) than Ryugu. The spectra of fresh craters on Ryugu and Bennu before cross calibration appeared to follow two parallel trend lines with offset, but they converged to a single trend after cross calibration. Such a post-cross-calibration perspective raise the possibility that Ryugu and Bennu evolved from materials with similar visible spectra but evolved in diverging directions by space weathering. The divergent evolution can be caused by the difference in space weathering dose/process and/or composition of the starting material. Thus, comparing the composition of samples returned from Ryugu and Bennu may change the way we interpret the spectral variation of C-complex asteroids.

24. CoordiNet: Constrained Dynamics Learning for State Coordination over Graph

Abstract

A neural architecture to efficiently coordinate the transitions of state variables (states) over a graph is proposed. We consider the coordination of the time evolution of the state variables associated with the nodes on a graph. The states are associated with physical attributes of agents, e.g., the speed and/or location of vehicles. Efficient coordination then corresponds to the optimization of dynamics (how fast do vehicles travel) that may be subject to constraints (travel must be collision-free). The aim of this paper is (i) the formulation of learnable constrained dynamics which governs the transition of states under constraints over a graph and (ii) to show its industrial application. Firstly, we formulate continuous ordinary differential equations (ODEs), namely forward propagation of state transitions over a graph and backward propagation to optimize model parameters for the learnable constrained dynamics. Discretization of these continuous ODEs results in the neural architecture CoordiNet. Secondly, as an application of CoordiNet, we address a traffic coordination problem by learning constrained dynamics such that vehicles can travel as fast as possible without collisions. Simulation experiments of traffic coordination confirm that our method maximizes the vehicles' speed states while avoiding collisions.

Abstract

Sound source localization and separation with permutation resolution are essential for achieving a computational auditory scene analysis system that can extract useful information from a mixture of various sounds. Because existing methods cope separately with these problems despite their mutual dependence, the overall result with these approaches can be degraded by any failure in one of these components. This paper presents a unified Bayesian framework to solve these problems simultaneously where localization and separation are regarded as a clustering problem. Experimental results confirm that our method outperforms state-of-the-art methods in terms of the separation quality with various setups including practical reverberant environments.
