We present a catalog of clouds identified from the $^{12}$CO (1--0) data of M83, which was observed using Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) with a spatial resolution of $\sim$46 pc and a mass sensitivity of $\sim$10$^4$ $M_{\odot}$ (3 $\sigma$). The almost full-disk coverage and high sensitivity of the data allowed us to sample 5724 molecular clouds with a median mass of $\sim1.9$ $\times$ $10^5$ $M_{\odot}$, which is comparable to the most frequently sampled mass of Giant Molecular Clouds by surveys in the Milky Way. About 60 percent of the total CO luminosity in M83's disk arises from clouds more massive than 10$^6$ $M_{\odot}$. Such massive clouds comprise 16 percent of the total clouds in number and tend to concentrate toward the arm, bar, and center, while smaller clouds are more prevalent in inter-arm regions. Most $>10^6$ $M_{\odot}$ clouds have peak brightness temperatures $T_{\mathrm{peak}}$ above 2 K with the current resolution. Comparing the observed cloud properties with the scaling relations determined by Solomon et al. 1987 (S87), $T_{\mathrm{peak}}$$>2$ K clouds follow the relations, but $T_{\mathrm{peak}}$$<2$ K clouds, which are dominant in number, deviate significantly. Without considering the effect of beam dilution, the deviations would suggest modestly high virial parameters and low surface mass densities for the entire cloud samples, which are similar to values found for the Milky Way clouds by Rice et al. (2016) and Miville-Desch{\^e}nes et al. (2017). However, once beam dilution is taken into account, the observed $\alpha_{\mathrm{vir}}$ and $\Sigma$ for a majority of the clouds (mostly $T_{\mathrm{peak}}$ $<2$ K) can be potentially explained with intrinsic $\Sigma$ of $\sim$100 $M_{\mathrm{\odot}}\ \mathrm{pc}^{-2}$ and $\alpha_{\mathrm{vir}}$ of $\sim$1, which are similar to the clouds of S87., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We report sub-pc-scale observations of the 321-GHz H$_2$O emission line in the radio galaxy NGC 1052. The H$_2$O line emitter size is constrained in $< 0.6$ milliarcsec distributed on the continuum core component. The brightness temperature exceeding $10^6$ K and the intensity variation indicate certain evidence for maser emission. The maser spectrum consists of redshifted and blueshifted velocity components spanning $\sim 400$ km s$^{-1}$, separated by a local minimum around the systemic velocity of the galaxy. Spatial distribution of maser components show velocity gradient along the jet direction, implying that the population-inverted gas is driven by the jets interacting with the molecular torus. We identified significant change of the maser spectra between two sessions separated by 14 days. The maser profile showed a radial velocity drift of $127 \pm 13$ km s$^{-1}$ yr$^{-1}$ implying inward gravitational acceleration at 5000 Schwarzschild radii. We present high-fidelity CO(1-0) imaging of molecular gas across the full star-forming disk of M83, using ALMA's 12m, 7m, and TP arrays and the MIRIAD package. The data have a mass sensitivity and resolution of 10^4Msun and 40 pc. The full disk coverage shows that the characteristics of molecular gas change radially from the center to outer disk. The molecular gas distribution shows coherent large-scale structures in the inner part, including the central concentration, bar offset ridges, and prominent molecular spiral arms. In the outer disk, the spiral arms appear less spatially coherent, and even flocculent. Massive filamentary gas concentrations are abundant even in the interarm regions. Building up these structures in the interarm regions would require a very long time (~>100Myr). Instead, they must have formed within stellar spiral arms and been released into the interarm regions. For such structures to survive through the dynamical processes, the lifetimes of these structures and their constituent molecules and molecular clouds must be long (~>100Myr). These interarm structures host little or no star formation traced by Halpha. The new map also shows extended CO emission, which likely represents an ensemble of unresolved molecular clouds., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) serendipitously detected H$_2$O $J_{Ka, Kc} = 10_{2,9} - 9_{3,6}$ emission at 321 GHz in NGC 1052. This is the first submillimeter maser detection in a radio galaxy and the most luminous 321-GHz H$_2$O maser known to date with the isotropic luminosity of 1090 $L_{\odot}$. The line profile consists of a broad velocity component with FWHM $= 208 \pm 12$ km s$^{-1}$ straddling the systemic velocity and a narrow component with FWHM $= 44 \pm 3$ km s$^{-1}$ blueshifted by 160 km s$^{-1}$. The profile is significantly different from the known 22-GHz $6_{1,6} - 5_{2,3}$ maser which shows a broad profile redshifted by 193 km s$^{-1}$. The submillimeter maser is spatially unresolved with a synthesized beam of $0^{\prime \prime}.68 \times 0^{\prime \prime}.56$ and coincides with the continuum core position within 12 pc. These results indicate amplification of the continuum emission through high-temperature ($>1000$ K) and dense ($n({\rm H}_2{\rm O}) > 10^4$ cm$^{-3}$) molecular gas in front of the core, Comment: 3 figures, Accepted for publication in Publications of Astronomical Society of Japan

Massive dense clumps in the Large Magellanic Cloud can be an important laboratory to explore the formation of populous clusters. We report multiscale ALMA observations of the N159W-North clump, which is the most CO-intense region in the galaxy. High-resolution CO isotope and 1.3 mm continuum observations with an angular resolution of $\sim$0."25($\sim$0.07 pc) revealed more than five protostellar sources with CO outflows within the main ridge clump. One of the thermal continuum sources, MMS-2, shows especially massive/dense nature whose total H$_2$ mass and peak column density are $\sim$10$^{4}$ $M_{\odot}$ and $\sim$10$^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$, respectively, and harbors massive ($\sim$100 $M_{\odot}$) starless core candidates identified as its internal substructures. The main ridge containing this source can be categorized as one of the most massive protocluster systems in the Local Group. The CO high-resolution observations found several distinct filamentary clouds extending southward from the star-forming spots. The CO (1-0) data set with a larger field of view reveals a conical-shaped, $\sim$30 pc long complex extending toward the northern direction. These features indicate that a large-scale gas compression event may have produced the massive star-forming complex. Based on the striking similarity between the N159W-North complex and the previously reported other two high-mass star-forming clouds in the nearby regions, we propose a $"$teardrops inflow model$"$ that explains the synchronized, extreme star formation across $>$50 pc, including one of the most massive protocluster clumps in the Local Group., Comment: 25 pages, 14 figures, 6 tables, Accepted for publication in ApJ

We study properties of the interstellar medium, an ingredient of stars, and star formation activity, in four nearby galaxy pairs in the early and mid stages of interaction for both a galaxy scale and a kpc scale. The galaxy-scale Kennicutt-Schmidt law shows that seven of eight interacting galaxies have a star formation rate within a factor of three compared with the best-fit of the isolated galaxies, although we have shown that molecular hydrogen gas is efficiently produced from atomic hydrogen during the interaction in the previous paper. The galaxy-scale specific star formation rate (sSFR) and star formation efficiency (SFE) in interacting galaxies are comparable to those in isolated galaxies. We also investigate SFE and the Kennicutt-Schmidt law on a kpc scale. The spatial distributions of SFE reveal that SFE is locally enhanced, and the enhanced regions take place asymmetrically or at off-centre regions. The local enhancement of SFE could be induced by shock. We find that the index of the Kennicutt-Schmidt law for the interacting galaxies in the early stage is 1.30$\pm$0.04, which is consistent with that of the isolated galaxies. Since CO emission, which is used in the Kennicutt-Schmidt law, is a tracer of the amount of molecular gas, this fact suggests that dense gas, which is more directly connected to star formation, is not changed at the early stage of interaction., Comment: 40 pages, 15 figures, 10 tables; accepted for publication in PASJ

We present a method to mitigate the atmospheric effects (residual atmospheric lines) in single-dish radio spectroscopy caused by the elevation difference between the target and reference positions. The method is developed as a script using the Atmospheric Transmission at Microwaves (ATM) library built into the Common Astronomy Software Applications (CASA) package. We apply the method to the data taken with the Total Power Array of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. The intensities of the residual atmospheric (mostly O3) lines are suppressed by, typically, an order of magnitude for the tested cases. The parameters for the ATM model can be optimized to minimize the residual line and, for a specific O3 line at 231.28 GHz, a seasonal dependence of a best-fitting model parameter is demonstrated. The method will be provided as a task within the CASA package in the near future. The Atacama Large millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) obtains spatial resolutions of 15 to 5 milli-arcsecond (mas) at 275-950GHz (0.87-0.32mm) with 16km baselines. Calibration at higher-frequencies is challenging as ALMA sensitivity and quasar density decrease. The Band-to-Band (B2B) technique observes a detectable quasar at lower frequency that is closer to the target, compared to one at the target high-frequency. Calibration involves a nearly constant instrumental phase offset between the frequencies and the conversion of the temporal phases to the target frequency. The instrumental offsets are solved with a differential-gain-calibration (DGC) sequence, consisting of alternating low and high frequency scans of strong quasar. Here we compare B2B and in-band phase referencing for high-frequencies ($>$289GHz) using 2-15km baselines and calibrator separation angles between $\sim$0.68 and $\sim$11.65$^{\circ}$. The analysis shows that: (1) DGC for B2B produces a coherence loss $<$7% for DGC phase RMS residuals $<$30$^{\circ}$. (2) B2B images using close calibrators ( $<$1.67$^{\circ}$ ) are superior to in-band images using distant ones ( $>$2.42$^{\circ}$ ). (3) For more distant calibrators, B2B is preferred if it provides a calibrator $\sim$2$^{\circ}$ closer than the best in-band calibrator. (4) Decreasing image coherence and poorer image quality occur with increasing phase calibrator separation angle because of uncertainties in the antenna positions and sub-optimal phase referencing. (5) To achieve $>$70% coherence for long-baseline (16 km) band 7 (289GHz) observations, calibrators should be within $\sim$4$^{\circ}$ of the target., Comment: 17 Figures, 10 Tables

In 2017, an Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) high-frequency long baseline campaign was organized to test image capabilities with baselines up to 16 km at submillimeter (submm) wavelengths. We investigated image qualities using ALMA receiver Bands 7, 8, 9, and 10 (285-875 GHz) by adopting band-to-band (B2B) phase referencing in which a phase calibrator is tracked at a lower frequency. For B2B phase referencing, it is expected that a closer phase calibrator to a target can be used, comparing to standard in-band phase referencing. In the first step, it is ensured that an instrumental phase offset difference between low- and high-frequency Bands can be removed using a differential gain calibration in which a phase calibrator is certainly detected while frequency switching. In the next step, comparative experiments are arranged to investigate the image quality between B2B and in-band phase referencing with phase calibrators at various separation angles. In the final step, we conducted long baseline imaging tests for a quasar at 289 GHz in Band 7 and 405 GHz in Band 8 and complex structure sources of HL Tau and VY CMa at ~670 GHz in Band 9. The B2B phase referencing was successfully applied, allowing us to achieve an angular resolution of 14x11 and 10x8 mas for HL Tau and VY CMa, respectively. There is a high probability of finding a low-frequency calibrator within 5.4 deg in B2B phase referencing, bright enough to use an 8 s scan length combined with a 7.5 GHz bandwidth., Comment: 61 pages, 17 figures, 8 tables

We present a new package for joint deconvolution of ALMA 12m, 7m, and Total Power (TP) data, dubbed ``Total Power Map to Visibilities (TP2VIS)". It converts a TP (single-dish) map into visibilities on the CASA platform, which can be input into deconvolvers (e.g., CLEAN) along with 12m and 7m visibilities. A manual is presented in the Github repository (https://github.com/tp2vis/distribute). Combining data from the different ALMA arrays is a driver for a number of science topics, namely those that probe size scales of extended and compact structures simultaneously. We test TP2VIS using model images, one with a single Gaussian and another that mimics the internal structures of giant molecular clouds. The result shows that the better uv coverage with TP2VIS visibilities helps the deconvolution process and reproduces the model image within errors of only 5% over two orders of magnitude in flux., Comment: Accepted to PASP. We observed five giant molecular clouds (GMCs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) in the 12CO J=1-0 line using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The sample includes four GMCs with some signs of star formation -- either YSOs, H II regions, and/or young clusters -- and one quiescent GMC without any sign of massive star formation. The data from the ALMA 12 m, 7 m, and Total-Power arrays are jointly deconvolved to obtain high-fidelity images at high spatial resolution (3 arcsec = 0.7 pc). The four star-forming GMCs show very complex structures with clumps and filaments. The quiescent GMC shows a relatively diffuse, extended emission distribution without prominent clumps or filaments. This difference is similar to that between structured molecular gas in Milky Way spiral arms and unstructured gas in the inter-arm regions. We characterize the difference with the brightness distribution function and brightness distribution index. In conjunction with other ALMA studies of GMCs in the LMC, the five GMCs tentatively form an evolutionary trend: from less structured, quiescent GMCs to more structured, actively star-forming GMCs. A future ALMA study will be able to map molecular clouds over the LMC and reveal the evolutionary sequence of molecular clouds., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures

We report the discovery of the molecular cloud whose kinematic distance is the largest in the Galaxy at the present moment, named G213.042$+$0.003, at $l =$ 213.042$^\circ$ and $b =$ 0.003$^\circ$ in the $^{12}$CO($J =$ 1-0) line using the Nobeyama 45-m telescope and a multi-beam receiver BEARS. This molecular cloud is located at the heliocentric distance of 21$_{-7}^{+12}$ kpc and Galactocentric distance of 29$_{-7}^{+12}$ kpc, which are estimated as the kinematic distances with the Galactic parameters obtained by Reid et al. (2014, ApJ, 783, 130). Its major and minor diameters and line width were measured to be 4.0$_{-1.3}^{+2.3}$ pc, 3.0$_{-1.0}^{+1.7}$ pc, and 1.5 km s$^{-1}$, respectively. The cloud mass was estimated to be 2.5$_{-1.4}^{+3.7}$ $\times$ 10$^2$ $M_\odot$ using the CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor of 5.6 $\times$ 10$^{20}$ cm$^{-2}$ (K km s$^{-1}$)$^{-1}$ obtained in far outer Galaxy., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables, Accepted for publication in PASJ

We have investigated properties of the interstellar medium in interacting galaxies in early and mid-stage using mapping data of 12CO(1-0) and HI.Assuming the standard CO-H2 conversion factor, we found no difference in molecular gas mass, atomic gas mass, and total gas mass (a sum of atomic and molecular gas mass) between interacting galaxies and isolated galaxies. However, interacting galaxies have a higher global molecular gas fraction, global fmol (a ratio of molecular gas mass to total gas mass averaged over a whole galaxy), than isolated galaxies. The distribution of local molecular gas fraction, local fmol (a ratio of the surface density of molecular gas to that of total gas), is different from the distribution in typical isolated galaxies. By a pixel-to-pixel comparison, isolated spiral galaxies show a gradual increase in local fmol along the surface density of total gas until it is saturated at 1.0, while interacting galaxies show no clear relation. We performed pixel-to-pixel theoretical model fittings varying metallicity and external pressure. According to the model fitting, external pressure can explain the trend of local fmol in the interacting galaxies. Assuming a half of the standard CO-H2 conversion factor for interacting galaxies, the results of pixel-to-pixel theoretical model fitting get worse than adopting the standard conversion factor, although global fmol of interacting galaxies becomes the same as in isolated galaxies. We conclude that external pressure occurs due to the shock prevailing over a whole galaxy or due to collisions between giant molecular clouds. The external pressure accelerates an efficient transition from atomic gas to molecular gas. Regarding chemical time-scale, high local fmol can be achieved at the very early stage of interaction even if shock induced by the collision of galaxies ionises interstellar gas., Comment: 36 pages, 16 figures, accepted to PASJ

We present evidence that super giant HII regions (GHRs) and other disk regions of the nearby spiral galaxy, M33, occupy distinct locations in the correlation between molecular gas, $\Sigma_{\rm H_2}$, and the star formation rate surface density, $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$. This result is based on wide field and high sensitivity CO(3-2) observations at 100 pc resolution. Star formation efficiencies (SFE), defined as $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$/$\Sigma_{\rm H_2}$, in GHRs are found to be about 1 dex higher than in other disk regions. The CO(3-2)/CO(1-0) integrated intensity ratio is also higher than the average over the disk. Such high SFE and CO(3-2)/CO(1-0) can reach the values found in starburst galaxies, which suggests that GHRs may be the elements building up a larger scale starburst region. Three possible contributions to high SFEs in GHR are investigated: (1) the $I_{CO}$-$N({\rm H_2})$ conversion factor, (2) the dense gas fraction traced by CO(3-2)/CO(1-0), and (3) the initial mass function (IMF). We conclude that these starburst-like properties in GHRs can be interpreted by a combination of both a top-heavy IMF and a high dense gas fraction, but not by changes in the $I_{CO}$-$N({\rm H_2})$ conversion factor., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, Accepted for publication in the ApJ

We report a super-linear correlation for the star formation law based on new CO($J$=1-0) data from the CARMA and NOBEYAMA Nearby-galaxies (CANON) CO survey. The sample includes 10 nearby spiral galaxies, in which structures at sub-kpc scales are spatially resolved. Combined with the star formation rate surface density traced by H$\alpha$ and 24 $\mu$m images, CO($J$=1-0) data provide a super-linear slope of $N$ = 1.3. The slope becomes even steeper ($N$ = 1.8) when the diffuse stellar and dust background emission is subtracted from the H$\alpha$ and 24 $\mu$m images. In contrast to the recent results with CO($J$=2-1) that found a constant star formation efficiency (SFE) in many spiral galaxies, these results suggest that the SFE is not independent of environment, but increases with molecular gas surface density. We suggest that the excitation of CO($J$=2-1) is likely enhanced in the regions with higher star formation and does not linearly trace the molecular gas mass. In addition, the diffuse emission contaminates the SFE measurement most in regions where star formation rate is law. These two effects can flatten the power law correlation and produce the apparent linear slope. The super linear slope from the CO($J$=1-0) analysis indicates that star formation is enhanced by non-linear processes in regions of high gas density, e.g., gravitational collapse and cloud-cloud collisions., Comment: Accepted to ApJ Letters, 6 pages, 2 figures

We resolve 182 individual giant molecular clouds (GMCs) larger than 2.5 $\times$ 10$^{5}$ \Msun in the inner disks of five large nearby spiral galaxies (NGC 2403, NGC 3031, NGC 4736, NGC 4826, and NGC 6946) to create the largest such sample of extragalactic GMCs within galaxies analogous to the Milky Way. Using a conservatively chosen sample of GMCs most likely to adhere to the virial assumption, we measure cloud sizes, velocity dispersions, and $^{12}$CO (J=1-0) luminosities and calculate cloud virial masses. The average conversion factor from CO flux to H$_{2}$ mass (or \xcons) for each galaxy is 1-2 \xcounits, all within a factor of two of the Milky Way disk value ($\sim$2 \xcounits). We find GMCs to be generally consistent within our errors between the galaxies and with Milky Way disk GMCs; the intrinsic scatter between clouds is of order a factor of two. Consistent with previous studies in the Local Group, we find a linear relationship between cloud virial mass and CO luminosity, supporting the assumption that the clouds in this GMC sample are gravitationally bound. We do not detect a significant population of GMCs with elevated velocity dispersions for their sizes, as has been detected in the Galactic center. Though the range of metallicities probed in this study is narrow, the average conversion factors of these galaxies will serve to anchor the high metallicity end of metallicity-\xco trends measured using conversion factors in resolved clouds; this has been previously possible primarily with Milky Way measurements., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, accepted to ApJ

We report the results of our observations of the 12CO (J=1-0) and 12CO (J=3-2) line emission of 74 major giant molecular clouds (GMCs) within the galactocentric distance of 5.1 kpc in the Local Group galaxy M33. The observations have been conducted as part of the Nobeyama Radio Observatory M33 All-disk survey of Giant Molecular Clouds project (NRO MAGiC). The spatial resolutions are 80 pc for 12CO (J=1-0) and 100 pc for 12CO (J=3-2). We detect 12CO (J=3-2) emission of 65 GMCs successfully. Furthermore, we find that the correlation between the surface density of the star formation rate, which is derived from a linear combination of Halpha and 24um emissions, and the 12CO (J=3-2) integrated intensity still holds at this scale. This result show that the star-forming activity is closely associated with warm and dense gases that are traced with the 12CO (J=3-2) line, even in the scale of GMCs. We also find that the GMCs with a high star-forming activity tend to show a high integrated intensity ratio (R3-2/1-0). Moreover, we also observe a mass-dependent trend of R3-2/1-0 for the GMCs with a low star-forming activity. From these results, we speculate that the R3-2/1-0 values of the GMCs with a low star-forming activity mainly depend on the dense gas fraction and not on the temperature, and therefore, the dense gas fraction increases with the mass of GMCs, at least in the GMCs with a low star-forming activity., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures, Accepted for publication in PASJ, 2012, Vol. 64, No. 6

We present a Giant Molecular Cloud (GMC) catalog toward M33, containing 71 GMCs in total, based on wide field and high sensitivity CO(J=3-2) observations with a spatial resolution of 100 pc using the ASTE 10 m telescope. Employing archival optical data, we identify 75 young stellar groups (YSGs) from the excess of the surface stellar density, and estimate their ages by comparing with stellar evolution models. A spatial comparison among the GMCs, YSGs, and HII regions enable us to classify GMCs into four categories: Type A showing no sign of massive star formation (SF), Type B being associated only with HII regions, Type C with both HII regions and <10 Myr-old YSGs and Type-D with both HII regions and 10--30 Myr YSGs. Out of 65 GMCs (discarding those at the edges of the observed fields), 1 (1%), 13 (20%), 29 (45%), and 22 (34%) are Types A, B, C, and D, respectively. We interpret these categories as stages in a GMC evolutionary sequence. Assuming that the timescale for each evolutionary stage is proportional to the number of GMCs, the lifetime of a GMC with a mass >10^5 Mo is estimated to be 20--40 Myr. In addition, we find that the dense gas fraction as traced by the CO(J=3-2)/CO(J=1-0) ratio is enhanced around SF regions. This confirms a scenario where dense gas is preferentially formed around previously generated stars, and will be the fuel for the next stellar generation. We present the results of 12CO(J = 1-0) mapping observations toward four interacting galaxies in early and mid stages of the interaction to understand the behavior of molecular gas in galaxy-galaxy interaction. The observations were carried out using the 45-m telescope at Nobeyama Radio Observatory (NRO). We compared our CO total flux to those previously obtained with single-dish observations and found that there are no discrepancy between them. Applying a typical CO-H2 conversion factor, all constituent galaxies have molecular gas mass more than 10^9 M_sun. Comparisons to HI, Ks and tracers of SF such as Halpha, FUV, 8 um and 24 um revealed that the distribution of molecular gas in interacting galaxies in the early stage of the interaction differs from atomic gas, stars and star-forming regions. These differences are not explained without the result of the interaction. Central concentration of molecular gas of interacting galaxies in the early stage of the interaction is lower than that of isolated galaxies, which suggests molecular gas is distributed off-centre and/or extends in the beginning of the interaction., Comment: 28 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

We explore the development of structures in molecular gas in the Milky Way by applying the analysis of the brightness distribution function (BDF) and the brightness distribution index (BDI) in the archival data from the Boston University-Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory 13CO J=1-0 Galactic Ring Survey. The BDI measures the fractional contribution of spatially confined bright molecular emission over faint emission extended over large areas. This relative quantity is largely independent of the amount of molecular gas and of any conventional, pre-conceived structures, such as cores, clumps, or giant molecular clouds. The structured molecular gas traced by higher BDI is located continuously along the spiral arms in the Milky Way in the longitude-velocity diagram. This clearly indicates that molecular gas changes its structure as it flows through the spiral arms. Although the high-BDI gas generally coincides with H II regions, there is also some high-BDI gas with no/little signature of ongoing star formation. These results support a possible evolutionary sequence in which unstructured, diffuse gas transforms itself into a structured state on encountering the spiral arms, followed by star formation and an eventual return to the unstructured state after the spiral arm passage., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

We have carried out survey observations toward the Galactic plane at l~38 deg in the 12CO and 13CO J=1-0 lines using the Nobeyama Radio Observatory 45-m telescope. A wide area (0.8 x 0.8 deg) was mapped with high spatial resolution (17"). The line of sight samples the gas in both the Sagittarius arm and the inter-arm regions. The present observations reveal how the structure and physical conditions vary across a spiral arm. We classify the molecular gas in the line of sight into two distinct components based on its appearance: the bright and compact B component and the fainter and diffuse (i.e., more extended) D component. The B component is predominantly seen at the spiral arm velocities, while the D component dominates at the inter-arm velocities and is also found at the spiral arm velocities. We introduce the brightness distribution function and the brightness distribution index (BDI, which indicates the dominance of the B component) in order to quantify the map's appearance. The radial velocities of BDI peaks coincide with those of high 12CO J=3-2/12CO J=1-0 intensity ratio (i.e., warm gas) and H II regions, and tend to be offset from the line brightness peaks at lower velocities (i.e., presumably downstream side of the arm). Our observations reveal that the gas structure at small scales changes across a spiral arm: bright and spatially confined structures develop in a spiral arm, leading to star formation at downstream side, while extended emission dominates in the inter-arm region., Comment: 36 pages, 16 figures. We present the largest sample to date of giant molecular clouds (GMCs) in a substantial spiral galaxy other than the Milky Way. We map the distribution of molecular gas with high resolution and image fidelity within the central 5 kpc of the spiral galaxy NGC 6946 in the 12CO (J=1-0) transition. By combining observations from the Nobeyama Radio Observatory 45-meter single dish telescope and the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter Astronomy (CARMA) interferometer, we are able to obtain high image fidelity and accurate measurements of LCO compared with previous purely interferometric studies. We resolve individual giant molecular clouds (GMCs), measure their luminosities and virial masses, and derive Xco - the conversion factor from CO measurements to H2 masses - within individual clouds. On average, we find that Xco = 1.2 \times 10^20 cm-2 / (K km s-1), which is consistent within our uncertainties with previously derived Galactic values as well as the value we derive for Galactic GMCs above our mass sensitivity limit. The properties of our GMCs are largely consistent with the trends observed for molecular clouds detected in the Milky Way disk, with the exception of six clouds detected within \sim400 pc of the center of NGC 6946, which exhibit larger velocity dispersions for a given size and luminosity, as has also been observed at the Galactic center., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures, 1 table; accepted for publication in ApJ

We report 350 and 230 GHz observations of molecular gas and dust in the starburst nucleus of NGC 253 at 20-40 pc (1"-2") resolution. The data contain CO(3-2), HCN(4-3), CO(2-1), 13CO(2-1), C18O(2-1), and continuum at 0.87 mm and 1.3 mm toward the central kiloparsec. The CO(2-1) size of the galaxy's central molecular zone (CMZ) is measured to be about 300 pc x 100 pc at the half maximum of intensity. Five clumps of dense and warm gas stand out in the CMZ at arcsecond resolution, and they are associated with compact radio sources due to recent massive star formation. They contribute one third of the CO emission in the central 300 pc and have 12CO peak brightness temperatures around 50 K, molecular gas column densities on the order of 10^{4} Msun pc^{-2}, gas masses on the order of 10^{7} Msun in the size scale of 20 pc, volume-averaged gas densities of n(H2) ~ 4000 cm^{-3}, and high HCN-to-CO ratios suggestive of higher fractions of dense gas than in the surrounding environment. It is suggested that these are natal molecular cloud complexes of massive star formation. The CMZ of NGC 253 is also compared with that of our Galaxy in CO(2-1) at the same 20 pc resolution. Their overall gas distributions are strikingly similar. The five molecular cloud complexes appear to be akin to such molecular complexes as Sgr A, Sgr B2, Sgr C, and the l=1.3deg cloud in the Galactic center. We present new $^{12}$CO(J=1-0) observations of the barred galaxy NGC 4303 using the Nobeyama 45m telescope (NRO45) and the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy (CARMA). The H$\alpha$ images of barred spiral galaxies often show active star formation in spiral arms, but less so in bars. We quantify the difference by measuring star formation rate and efficiency at a scale where local star formation is spatially resolved. Our CO map covers the central 2$\farcm$3 region of the galaxy; the combination of NRO45 and CARMA provides a high fidelity image, enabling accurate measurements of molecular gas surface density. We find that star formation rate and efficiency are twice as high in the spiral arms as in the bar. We discuss this difference in the context of the Kennicutt-Schimidt (KS) law, which indicates a constant star formation rate at a given gas surface density. We have mapped the northern area (30' times 20') of a local group spiral galaxy M33 in 12CO(J=1-0) line with the 45-m telescope at the Nobeyama Radio Observatory. Along with Halpha and Spitzer 24-micron data, we have investigated the relationship between the surface density of molecular gas mass and that of star formation rate (SFR) in an external galaxy (Kennicutt-Schmidt law) with the highest spatial resolution (~80pc) to date, which is comparable to scales of giant molecular clouds (GMCs). At positions where CO is significantly detected, the SFR surface density exhibits a wide range of over four orders of magnitude, from Sigma(SFR)<10^{-10} to ~10^{-6}M_solar yr^{-1} pc^{-2}, whereas the Sigma(H2) values are mostly within 10 to 40 M_solar pc^{-2}. The surface density of gas and that of SFR correlate well at a 1-kpc resolution, but the correlation becomes looser with higher resolution and breaks down at GMC scales. The scatter of the Sigma(SFR)-Sigma(H2) relationship in the 80-pc resolution results from the variety of star forming activity among GMCs, which is attributed to the various evolutionary stages of GMCs and to the drift of young clusters from their parent GMCs. We present a new on-the-fly (OTF) mapping of CO(J=3-2) line emission with the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE) toward the 8' x 8' (or 10.5 x 10.5 kpc at the distance of 4.5 Mpc) region of the nearby barred spiral galaxy M 83 at an effective resolution of 25''. Due to its very high sensitivity, our CO(J=3-2) map can depict not only spiral arm structures but also spur-like substructures extended in inter-arm regions. This spur-like substructures in CO(J=3-2) emission are well coincident with the distribution of massive star forming regions traced by Halpha luminosity and Spitzer/IRAC 8 um emission. We have identified 54 CO(J=3-2) clumps as Giant Molecular-cloud Associations (GMAs) employing the CLUMPFIND algorithm, and have obtained their sizes, velocity dispersions, virial masses, and CO luminosity masses. We found that the virial parameter alpha, which is defined as the ratio of the virial mass to the CO luminosity mass, is almost unity for GMAs in spiral arms, whereas there exist some GMAs whose alpha are 3 -- 10 in the inter-arm region. We found that GMAs with higher $\alpha$ tend not to be associated with massive star forming regions, while other virialized GMAs are. It is an open question why the temperature of molecular gas in the Galactic center region is higher than that of dust. To address this problem, we made simultaneous observations in the NH_3 (J,K) = (1,1), (2,2), and (3,3) lines of the central molecular zone (CMZ) using the Kagoshima 6 m telescope. The ortho-to-para ratio of NH_3 molecules in the CMZ is 1.5--3.5 at most observed area. This ratio is higher than the statistical equilibrium value, and suggests that the formation temperature of NH_3 is 11--20 K. This temperature is similar to the dust temperature estimated from the submillimeter and infrared continuum. This result suggests that the NH_3 molecules in the CMZ were produced on dust grains with the currently observed temperature (11--20 K), and they were released into the gas phase by supernova shocks or collisions of dust particles. We have developed spectral line On-The-Fly (OTF) observing mode for the Nobeyama Radio Observatory 45-m and the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment 10-m telescopes. Sets of digital autocorrelation spectrometers are available for OTF with heterodyne receivers mounted on the telescopes, including the focal-plane 5 x 5 array receiver, BEARS, on the 45-m. During OTF observations, the antenna is continuously driven to cover the mapped region rapidly, resulting in high observing efficiency and accuracy. Pointing of the antenna and readouts from the spectrometer are recorded as fast as 0.1 second. In this paper we report improvements made on software and instruments, requirements and optimization of observing parameters, data reduction process, and verification of the system. We present a map of the major part of the central molecular zone (CMZ) of simultaneous observations in the NH3 (J,K) = (1,1) and (2,2) lines using the Kagoshima 6-m telescope. The mapped area is -1.000 < l < 1.625 deg, -0.375 < b < +0.250 deg. The kinetic temperatures derived from the (2,2) to (1,1) intensity ratios are 20--80 K or exceed 80 K. The gases corresponding to temperature of 20--80 K and > 80 K contain 75% and 25% of the total NH3 flux, respectively. These temperatures indicate that the dense molecular gas in the CMZ is dominated by gas that is warmer than the majority of the dust present there. A comparison with the CO survey by Sawada et al. (2001) shows that the NH3 emitting region is surrounded by a high pressure region on the l-v plane. Although NH3 emission traces dense gas, it is not extended into a high pressure region. Therefore, the high pressure region is less dense and has to be hotter. This indicates that the molecular cloud complex in the Galactic center region has a ``core'' of dense and warm clouds which are traced by the NH3 emission, and an ``envelope'' of less dense and hotter gas clouds. New 13CO data from the BU-FCRAO Milky Way Galactic Ring Survey (GRS) are analyzed to understand the shape and internal motions of molecular clouds. For a sample of more than five hundred molecular clouds, we find that they are preferentially elongated along the Galactic plane. On the other hand, their spin axes are randomly oriented. We therefore conclude that the elongation is not supported by internal spin but by internal velocity anisotropy. It has been known that some driving mechanisms are necessary to sustain the supersonic velocity dispersion within molecular clouds. The mechanism for generating the velocity dispersion must also account for the preferred elongation. This excludes some driving mechanisms, such as stellar winds and supernovae, because they do not produce the systemic elongation along the Galactic plane.
