1. Perturbation-based Frequency Domain Linear and Nonlinear Noise Estimation

Abstract

In this paper, a new method for the separation of noise categories based on Four-Wave Mixing is presented. The theoretical analysis is grounded in the Gaussian Noise model and verified by split step simulations. The noise categories react differently to the introduced perturbations, by performing a set of perturbations the behaviour of the different categories can be separated by means of a least-square fitting. Given ASE is independent of the induced perturbations, it is possible to separate noise contributions. The analysis includes constant and variable power perturbations. The estimation of the noise categories is discussed from two points of view: NSR evolution post-DSP processing, and over the power spectral density in a notched region. The NSR estimation can only be performed at reception, whereas the power spectral density approach can be performed along the optical link if a high resolution Optical Spectrum Analyzer is available. Abstract

In this paper, we discuss a new technique for measuring transceiver noise, skew, and for the detection of uncompensated transceiver impairments. The method consists on the introduction of frequency domain notch or notches at the transmitter, which allows to estimate of the Signal-to-Noise and Distortion Ratio (SNDR) at different stages over the transmission chain. The proposed technique requires the detection of the signal spectrum using either: a modem receiver, an Optical Spectrum Analyzer (OSA), an oscilloscope, or an Electrical Spectrum Analyzer (ESA), depending on the stage where the spectrum is measured and requiring minimal processing of the received signal. Our analysis is focused on Ciena's WaveLogic Ai commercial transceiver and a 95 Gbaud DAC. We demonstrate that symmetrically placed frequency domain notches can be used to mitiguate the influence of crosstalk on the SNDR estimates. Finally, we show how a single notch spectrum can be used to detect and compensate for impairments, and we perform skew estimation as an example.

Abstract

Quantum key distribution (QKD), a technology that enables perfectly secure communication, has evolved to the stage where many different protocols are being used in real-world implementations. Each protocol has its own advantages, meaning that users can choose the one best-suited to their application, however each often requires different hardware. This complicates multi-user networks, in which users may need multiple transmitters to communicate with one another. Here, we demonstrate a direct-modulation based transmitter that can be used to implement most weak coherent pulse based QKD protocols with simple changes to the driving signals. This also has the potential to extend to classical communications, providing a low chirp transmitter with simple driving requirements that combines phase shift keying with amplitude shift keying. We perform QKD with concurrent time-bin and phase modulation, alongside phase randomisation. The acquired data is used to evaluate secure key rates for time-bin encoded BB84 with decoy states and a finite key-size analysis, giving megabit per second secure key rates, 1.60 times higher than if purely phase-encoded BB84 was used., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Time-bin encoding is an attractive method for transmitting photonic qubits over long distances with minimal decoherence. It allows a simple receiver for quantum key distribution (QKD) that extracts a key by measuring time of arrival of photons and detects eavesdropping by measuring interference of pulses in different time bins. In the past, coherent pulses have been generated using a CW laser and an intensity modulator. A greatly simplified transmitter is proposed and demonstrated here that works by directly modulating the laser diode. Coherence between pulses is maintained by a weak seed laser. The modulator-free source creates time-bin encoded pulses with a high extinction ratio (29.4 dB) and an interference visibility above 97 %. The resulting QKD transmitter gives estimated secure key rates up to 4.57 Mbit/s, the highest yet reported for coherent-one-way QKD, and can be programmed for all protocols using weak coherent pulses.

Abstract

The impact of the amplifier noise figure (NF) on the optical network throughput is quantified from an information viewpoint. For every dB of NF decrease, throughput gains between 4% and 7% are reported.
