We present stellar specific angular momentum $j_*$ measurements of two $z\sim 1.5$ galaxies in the KGES sample and 12 DYNAMO $z\sim 0.1$ analogues of high-redshift galaxies. We combine natural seeing integral field spectroscopic data to trace line emission out to high multiples of effective radius $r_e$, with adaptive optics assisted Keck/OSIRIS observations to trace the rapid rise in rotation curve in the inner regions. Our spaxel-wise integration method gives results that are on average within measurement uncertainty of the traditional rotation curve model method. At $z\sim 0$, combining GMOS and OSIRIS datasets improves the measurement uncertainty in $j_*$ from 13\% (GMOS only) or 16\% (OSIRIS only) to 10\%. At $z\sim 1.5$, systematics allow for at best 20\% uncertainty on $j_*$. DYNAMO analogues of high-$z$ galaxies have low $j_*$ for their stellar mass $M_*$, and low bulge-to-total light ratio $\beta$ for their $j_*/M_*$. The high-$z$ galaxy COSMOS 127977 has $j_*/M_*$ consistent with normal local disk galaxies, while UDS 78317 is consistent with local analogues. However, our high-resolution OSIRIS data reveal that UDS 78317 may be a merging system. We report a relationship between distance to the $\beta-j_*/M_*$ plane and the ratio of velocity dispersion to rotational velocity $\sigma/v_{max}$, where galaxies that deviate more from the plane are more dispersion-dominated due to turbulence. We present the first data release (DR1) of the UVES Spectral Quasar Absorption Database (SQUAD), comprising 467 fully reduced, continuum-fitted high-resolution quasar spectra from the Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES) on the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope. The quasars have redshifts $z=0$-5, and a total exposure time of 10 million seconds provides continuum-to-noise ratios of 4-342 (median 20) per 2.5-km/s pixel at 5500 \AA. The SQUAD spectra are fully reproducible from the raw, archival UVES exposures with open-source software, including our UVES_popler tool for combining multiple extracted echelle exposures which we document here. All processing steps are completely transparent and can be improved upon or modified for specific applications. A primary goal of SQUAD is to enable statistical studies of large quasar and absorber samples, and we provide tools and basic information to assist three broad scientific uses: studies of damped Lyman-$\alpha$ systems (DLAs), absorption-line surveys and time-variable absorption lines. For example, we provide a catalogue of 155 DLAs whose Lyman-$\alpha$ lines are covered by the DR1 spectra, 18 of which are reported for the first time. The HI column densities of these new DLAs are measured from the DR1 spectra. Galaxy starlight at 3.6$\mu$m is an excellent tracer of stellar mass. Here we use the latest 3.6$\mu$m imaging from the Spitzer Space Telescope to measure the total stellar mass and effective radii in a homogeneous way for a sample of galaxies from the SLUGGS survey. These galaxies are representative of nearby early-type galaxies in the stellar mass range of 10 $<$ log M$_{\ast}$/M$_{\odot}$ $<$ 11.7, and our methodology can be applied to other samples of early-type galaxies. We model each galaxy in 2D and estimate its total asymptotic magnitude from a 1D curve-of-growth. Magnitudes are converted into stellar masses using a 3.6$\mu$m mass-to-light ratio from the latest stellar population models of R\"ock et al., assuming a Kroupa IMF. We apply a ratio based on each galaxy's mean mass-weighted stellar age within one effective radius (the mass-to-light ratio is insensitive to galaxy metallicity for the generally old stellar ages and high metallicities found in massive early-type galaxies). Our 3.6$\mu$m stellar masses agree well with masses derived from 2.2$\mu$m data. From the 1D surface brightness profile we fit a single Sersic law, excluding the very central regions. We measure the effective radius, Sersic n parameter and effective surface brightness for each galaxy. We find that galaxy sizes derived from shallow optical imaging and the 2MASS survey tend to underestimate the true size of the largest, most massive galaxies in our sample. While spiral and lenticular galaxies have large-scale disks extending beyond their bulges, and most local early-type galaxies with 10^{10} < M_*/M_Sun < 2x10^{11} contain a disk (e.g., ATLAS^3D), the early-type galaxies do possess a range of disk sizes. The edge-on, `intermediate-scale' disk in the `disky elliptical' galaxy NGC 1271 has led to some uncertainty as to what its spheroidal component is. Walsh et al. reported a directly measured black hole mass of 3x10^9 M_Sun for this galaxy; which they remarked was an order of magnitude greater than what they expected based on their derivation of the host spheroid's luminosity. Our near-infrared image analysis supports a small embedded disk within a massive spheroidal component with M_{sph,*} = (0.9+/-0.2)x10^{11} M_Sun (using M_*/L_H = 1.4 from Walsh et al.). This places NGC 1271 just 1.6-sigma above the near-linear M_bh-M_{sph,*} relation for early-type galaxies. Therefore, past speculation that there may be a systematic difference in the black hole scaling relations between compact massive early-type galaxies with intermediate-scale disks, i.e. ES galaxies such as NGC 1271, and early-type galaxies with either no substantial disk (E) or a large-scale disk (S0) is not strongly supported by NGC 1271. We additionally (i) show how ES galaxies fit naturally in the (`bulge'-to-total)-(morphological type) diagram, while noting a complication with recent revisions to the Hubble-Jeans tuning-fork diagram, (ii) caution about claims of over-massive black holes in other ES galaxies if incorrectly modelled as S0 galaxies, and (iii) reveal that the compact massive spheroid in NGC 1271 has properties similar to bright bulges in other galaxies which have grown larger-scale disks., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. The S\'ersic $R^{1/n}$ model is the best approximation known to date for describing the light distribution of stellar spheroidal and disk components, with the S\'ersic index $n$ providing a direct measure of the central radial concentration of stars. The S\'ersic index of a galaxy's spheroidal component, $n_{sph}$, has been shown to tightly correlate with the mass of the central supermassive black hole, $M_{BH}$. The $M_{BH}-n_{sph}$ correlation is also expected from other two well known scaling relations involving the spheroid luminosity, $L_{sph}$: the $L_{sph}-n_{sph}$ and the $M_{BH}-L_{sph}$. Obtaining an accurate estimate of the spheroid S\'ersic index requires a careful modelling of a galaxy's light distribution and some studies have failed to recover a statistically significant $M_{BH}-n_{sph}$ correlation. With the aim of re-investigating the $M_{BH}-n_{sph}$ and other black hole mass scaling relations, we performed a detailed (i.e.~bulge, disks, bars, spiral arms, rings, halo, nucleus, etc.) decomposition of 66 galaxies, with directly measured black hole masses, that had been imaged at $3.6\rm~\mu m$ with Spitzer. In this paper, the third of this series, we present an analysis of the $L_{sph}-n_{sph}$ and $M_{BH}-n_{sph}$ diagrams. While early-type (elliptical+lenticular) and late-type (spiral) galaxies split into two separate relations in the $L_{sph}-n_{sph}$ and $M_{BH}-L_{sph}$ diagrams, they reunite into a single $M_{BH} \propto n_{sph}^{3.39 \pm 0.15}$ sequence with relatively small intrinsic scatter ($\epsilon \simeq 0.25 \rm~dex$). We compare the set of local galaxies having dynamically measured black holes with a large, unbiased sample of galaxies extracted from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We confirm earlier work showing that the majority of black hole hosts have significantly higher velocity dispersions sigma than local galaxies of similar stellar mass. We use Monte-Carlo simulations to illustrate the effect on black hole scaling relations if this bias arises from the requirement that the black hole sphere of influence must be resolved to measure black hole masses with spatially resolved kinematics. We find that this selection effect artificially increases the normalization of the Mbh-sigma relation by a factor of at least ~3; the bias for the Mbh-Mstar relation is even larger. Our Monte Carlo simulations and analysis of the residuals from scaling relations both indicate that sigma is more fundamental than Mstar or effective radius. In particular, the Mbh-Mstar relation is mostly a consequence of the Mbh-sigma and sigma-Mstar relations, and is heavily biased by up to a factor of 50 at small masses. This helps resolve the discrepancy between dynamically-based black hole-galaxy scaling relations versus those of active galaxies. Our simulations also disfavour broad distributions of black hole masses at fixed sigma. Correcting for this bias suggests that the calibration factor used to estimate black hole masses in active galaxies should be reduced to values of fvir~1. Black hole mass densities should also be proportionally smaller, perhaps implying significantly higher radiative efficiencies/black hole spins. The identification of galaxies with `overly massive' black holes requires two measurements: a black hole mass (M_bh) and a host spheroid mass (M_sph,*). Here we provide our measurements for NGC 1277. Our structural decomposition reveals that NGC 1277 is dominated by a `classical' spheroid with a Sersic index n=5.3, a half-light radius R_e=2.1 kpc, and a stellar mass of 2.7x10^{11} M_sun (using M_*/L_V=11.65, Martin-Navarro et al.). This mass is an order of magnitude greater than originally reported. Using the latest (M_bh)-n, (M_bh)-(M_sph,*) and (M_bh)-sigma relations, the expected black hole mass is respectively (0.57^{+1.29}_{-0.40})x10^9 M_sun, (1.58^{+4.04}_{-1.13})x10^9 M_sun, and (2.27^{+4.04}_{-1.44})x10^9 M_sun (using sigma=300 km/s) for which the `sphere-of-influence' is 0".31. Our new kinematical maps obtained from laser guide star assisted, adaptive optics on the Keck I Telescope dramatically reaffirm the presence of the inner, nearly edge-on, disk seen in this galaxy's image. We also report that this produces a large velocity shear (~400 km/s) across the inner 0".2 (70 pc) plus elevated values of sqrt{sigma^2+(V_rot)^2} across the inner 3".8x0".6 region of the galaxy. Our new multi-Gaussian expansion (MGE) models and Jeans Anisotropic MGE (JAM) analysis struggled to match this extended component. Our optimal black hole mass, albeit a probable upper limit because of the disk, is 1.2x10^9 M_sun (M/L_V=12.3). This is an order of magnitude smaller than originally reported and 4 times smaller than recently reported. It gives an M_bh/M_sph,* ratio of 0.45% in agreement with the median (~0.5%) and range (0.1 to 5.0%) observed in non-dwarf, early-type galaxies. In our first paper, we performed a detailed (i.e. bulge, disks, bars, spiral arms, rings, halo, nucleus, etc.) decomposition of 66 galaxies, with directly measured black hole masses, $M_{BH}$, that had been imaged at $3.6~\mu m$ with Spitzer. Our sample is the largest to date and, for the first time, the decompositions were checked for consistency with the galaxy kinematics. We present correlations between $M_{ BH}$ and the host spheroid (and galaxy) luminosity, $L_{sph}$ (and $L_{gal}$), and also stellar mass, $M_{*,sph}$. While most previous studies have used galaxy samples that were overwhelmingly dominated by high-mass, early-type galaxies, our sample includes 17 spiral galaxies, half of which have $M_{BH} < 10^7~M_\odot$, and allows us to better investigate the poorly studied low-mass end of the $M_{BH} - M_{*,sph}$ correlation. The bulges of early-type galaxies follow $M_{BH} \propto M_{*,sph}^{1.04 \pm 0.10}$ and define a tight red sequence with intrinsic scatter $\epsilon = 0.43 \pm 0.06~dex$ and a median $M_{BH}/M_{*,sph}$ ratio of $0.68 \pm 0.04\%$, i.e.~a $\pm 2\sigma$ range of 0.1-5%. At the low-mass end, the bulges of late-type galaxies define a much steeper blue sequence, with $M_{BH} \propto M_{*,sph}^{2-3}$, indicating that gas-rich processes feed the black hole more efficiently than the host bulge as they coevolve. We additionally report that: i) our Sersic galaxy sample follows a less steep sequence than previously reported; ii) bulges with Sersic index $n<2$, argued by some to be pseudo-bulges, are not offset to lower $M_{BH}$ from the correlation defined by the current bulge sample with $n>2$; and iii) $L_{sph}$ and $L_{gal}$ correlate equally well with $M_{BH}$, in terms of intrinsic scatter, only for early-type galaxies - once reasonable numbers of spiral galaxies are included, the correlation with $L_{ sph}$ is better than that with $L_{gal}$., Comment: To appear in ApJ

Several recent studies have performed galaxy decompositions to investigate correlations between the black hole mass and various properties of the host spheroid, but they have not converged on the same conclusions. This is because their models for the same galaxy were often significantly different and not consistent with each other in terms of fitted components. Using $3.6 \rm ~\mu m$ $Spitzer$ imagery, which is a superb tracer of the stellar mass (superior to the $K$-band), we have performed state-of-the-art multicomponent decompositions for 66 galaxies with directly measured black hole masses. Our sample is the largest to date and, unlike previous studies, contains a large number (17) of spiral galaxies with low black hole masses. We paid careful attention to the image mosaicking, sky subtraction and masking of contaminating sources. After a scrupulous inspection of the galaxy photometry (through isophotal analysis and unsharp masking) and - for the first time - 2D kinematics, we were able to account for spheroids, large-scale, intermediate-scale and nuclear disks, bars, rings, spiral arms, halos, extended or unresolved nuclear sources and partially depleted cores. For each individual galaxy, we compared our best-fit model with previous studies, explained the discrepancies and identified the optimal decomposition. Moreover, we have independently performed 1D and 2D decompositions, and concluded that, at least when modelling large, nearby galaxies, 1D techniques have more advantages than 2D techniques. Finally, we developed a prescription to estimate the uncertainties on the 1D best-fit parameters for the 66 spheroids that takes into account systematic errors, unlike popular 2D codes that only consider statistical errors., Comment: To appear in ApJ. The classification "early-type" galaxy includes both elliptically- and lenticular-shaped galaxies. Theoretically, the spheroid-to-disc flux ratio of an early-type galaxy can assume any positive value, but in practice studies often consider only spheroid/disc decompositions in which the disc neatly dominates over the spheroid at large galaxy radii, creating an inner "bulge" as observed in most spiral galaxies. Here we show that decompositions in which the disc remains embedded within the spheroid, labelled by some as "unphysical", correctly reproduce both the photometric and kinematic properties of early-type galaxies with intermediate-scale discs. Intermediate-scale discs have often been confused with large-scale discs and incorrectly modelled as such; when this happens, the spheroid luminosity is considerably underestimated. This has recently led to some surprising conclusions, such as the claim that a number of galaxies with intermediate-scale discs (Mrk 1216, NGC 1277, NGC 1271, and NGC 1332) host a central black hole whose mass is abnormally large compared to expectations from the (underestimated) spheroid luminosity. We show that when these galaxies are correctly modelled, they no longer appear as extreme outliers in the (black hole mass)-(spheroid mass) diagram. Neutral hydrogen represents the major observable baryonic constituent of galaxies that fuels the formation of stars through the transformation in molecular hydrogen. The emission of the hydrogen recombination line Halpha is the most direct tracer of the process that transforms gas (fuel) into stars. We continue to present Halpha3 (acronym for Halpha-alpha-alpha), an extensive Halpha+[NII] narrow-band imaging campaign of galaxies selected from the HI Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA Survey (ALFALFA), using the instrumentation available at the San Pedro Martir observatory (Mexico). In only four years since 2011 we were able to complete in 48 nights the Halpha imaging observations of 724 galaxies in the region of the Coma supercluster 10^h < R.A. <16^h; 24^o < Dec. <28^o and 3900

It has been widely remarked that compact, massive, elliptical-like galaxies are abundant at high redshifts but exceedingly rare in the Universe today, implying significant evolution such that their sizes at z ~ 2+/-0.6 have increased by factors of 3 to 6 to become today's massive elliptical galaxies. These claims have been based on studies which measured the half-light radii of galaxies as though they are all single component systems. Here we identify 21 spheroidal stellar systems within 90 Mpc that have half-light, major-axis radii R_e < ~2 kpc, stellar masses 0.7x10^{11} < M_*/M_Sun < 1.4x10^{11}, and Sersic indices typically around a value of n=2 to 3. This abundance of compact, massive spheroids in our own backyard - with a number density of 6.9x10^{-6} / Mpc^3 (or 3.5x10^{-5} / Mpc^3 per unit dex in stellar mass) - and with the same physical properties as the high-redshift galaxies, had been over-looked because they are encased in stellar disks which usually result in `galaxy' sizes notably larger than 2 kpc. Moreover, this number density is a lower limit because it has not come from a volume-limited sample. The actual density may be closer to 10^{-4} / Mpc^3, although further work is required to confirm this. We therefore conclude that not all massive `spheroids' have undergone dramatic structural and size evolution since z ~ 2+/-0.6. Given that the bulges of local early-type disk galaxies are known to consist of predominantly old stars which existed at z ~ 2, it seems likely that some of the observed high redshift spheroids did not increase in size by building (3D) triaxial envelopes as commonly advocated, and that the growth of (2D) disks has also been important over the past 9-11 billion years., Comment: 15 pages of text (incl. 3 figures and 3 pages of references). Semi-analytical models in a $\Lambda$CDM cosmology have predicted the presence of outlying, "overmassive" black holes at the high-mass end of the (black hole mass -- galaxy velocity dispersion) $M_{\rm BH} - \sigma$ diagram (which we update here with a sample of 89 galaxies). They are a consequence of having experienced more dry mergers -- thought not to increase a galaxy's velocity dispersion -- than the "main-sequence" population. Wet mergers and gas-rich processes, on the other hand, preserve the main correlation. Due to the scouring action of binary supermassive black holes, the extent of these dry mergers (since the last significant wet merger) can be traced by the ratio between the central stellar mass deficit and the black hole mass ($M_{\rm def,*} / M_{\rm BH}$). However, in a sample of 23 galaxies with partially depleted cores, including central cluster galaxies, we show that the "overmassive" black holes are actually hosted by galaxies that appear to have undergone the lowest degree of such merging. In addition, the rotational kinematics of 37 galaxies in the $M_{\rm BH} - \sigma$ diagram reveals that fast and slow rotators are not significantly offset from each other, also contrary to what is expected if these two populations were the product of wet and dry mergers respectively. We obtained long-slit optical spectra of the nuclear regions of 376 galaxies in the local Universe using the 1.5m Cassini telescope of Bologna Observatory. Of these spectra, 164 were either never taken before by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), or given by the Nasa Extragalactic Database (NED). With these new spectra, we contribute investigating the occurrence of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Nevertheless, we stress that the present sample is by no means complete, thus, it cannot be used to perform any demographic study. Following the method presented in Gavazzi et al. (2011), we classify the nuclear spectra using a six bin scheme: SEY (Seyfert), sAGN (strong AGN), and wAGN (weak AGN) represent active galactic nuclei of different levels of activity; HII accounts for star-forming nuclei; RET (retired) and PAS (passive) refer to nuclei with poor or no star-formation activity. The spectral classification is performed using the ratio of 6584 {\lambda} [NII] to H{\alpha} lines and the equivalent width (EW) of H{\alpha} versus [NII]/H{\alpha} (WHAN diagnostic introduced by Cid Fernandes and collaborators) after correcting H{\alpha} for underlying absorption. Scaling relations between supermassive black hole mass, M_BH, and host galaxy properties are a powerful instrument for studying their coevolution. A complete picture involving all of the black hole scaling relations, in which each relation is consistent with the others, is necessary to fully understand the black hole-galaxy connection. The relation between M_BH and the central light concentration of the surrounding bulge, quantified by the S\'ersic index n, may be one of the simplest and strongest such relations, requiring only uncalibrated galaxy images. We have conducted a census of literature S\'ersic index measurements for a sample of 54 local galaxies with directly measured M_BH values. We find a clear M_BH - n relation, despite an appreciable level of scatter due to the heterogeneity of the data. Given the current M_BH - L_sph and the L_sph - n relations, we have additionally derived the expected M_BH - n relations, which are marginally consistent at the 2 sigma level with the observed relations. Elliptical galaxies and the bulges of disc galaxies are each expected to follow two distinct bent M_BH - n relations due to the S\'ersic/core-S\'ersic divide. For the same central light concentration, we predict that M_BH in the S\'ersic bulges of disc galaxies are an order magnitude higher than in S\'ersic elliptical galaxies if they follow the same M_BH - L_sph relation., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the analysis of Halpha3, an Halpha imaging survey of galaxies selected from the HI ALFALFA Survey in the Coma Supercluster. By using the Halpha line as a tracer of the "instantaneous" star formation, complemented with optical colors from SDSS we explore the hypothesis that a morphological sequence of galaxies of progressively earlier type, lower gas-content exists in the neighborhood of the Coma cluster, with specific star formation activity decreasing with increasing local galaxy density and velocity dispersion. In the dwarf regime (8.5<\log(M*)< 9.5) we identify a 4-step sequence of galaxies with progressively redder colors, i.e. of decreasing specific star formation, from (1) HI-rich Late-Type Galaxies belonging to the blue-cloud exhibiting extended plus nuclear star formation, (2) HI-poor LTGs with nuclear star formation only, (3) HI-poor galaxies with no star formation either extended or nuclear, but with nuclear Post-Star-Burst signature,(4) Early-type Galaxies in the red-sequence, with no gas or star formation on all scales. Along this sequence the quenching of the star formation proceeds radially outside-in. The progression toward redder colors found along this "morphological" (gas content) sequence is comparable to the one obtained increasing the local galaxy density, from the cosmic filaments (1,2), to the rich clusters (2,3,4). In the dwarf regime we find evidence for evolution of HI-rich LTGs into ETGs, passing through HI-poor and PSB galaxies, driven by the environment. We identify ram-pressure as the mechanism most likely responsible for this transformation. We present the analysis of the galaxy structural parameters from Halpha3, an Halpha narrow-band imaging follow-up survey of ~800 galaxies selected from the HI ALFALFA Survey in the Local and Coma Superclusters. Taking advantage of Halpha3 which provides the complete census of the recent star-forming, HI-rich galaxies in the local universe, we aim to investigate the structural parameters of both the young (<10 Myr) and the old (>1 Gyr) stellar populations. By comparing the sizes of these stellar components we investigated the spatial scale on which galaxies are growing at the present cosmological epoch and the role of the environment in quenching the star-formation activity. We computed the concentration, asymmetry, and clumpiness structural parameters. To quantify the sizes we computed half-light radii and a new parameter dubbed EW/r. The concentration index computed in the r band depends on the stellar mass and on the Hubble type, these variables being related since most massive galaxies are bulge dominated thus most concentrated. Going toward later spirals and irregulars both the concentration index and the stellar mass decrease. Blue Compact dwarfs represent an exception since they have similar stellar mass but they are more concentrated than dwarf irregulars. The asymmetry and the clumpiness increase along the spiral sequence then they decrease going into the dwarf regime, where the light distribution is smooth and more symmetric. When measured on Halpha images, the CAS parameters do not exhibit obvious correlations with Hubble type. We found that the concentration index is the main parameter that describes the current growth of isolated galaxies but, for a fixed concentration, the stellar mass plays a second order role. To investigate the dependence of the occurrence of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) on local galaxy density, we study the nuclear properties of ~5000 galaxies in the Coma Supercluster whose density spans 2 orders of magnitude from the sparse filaments to the cores of the rich clusters. We obtained optical spectra of the nuclei of 177 galaxies using the 1.5m Cassini telescope, which are added to the 4785 spectra available from SDSS (DR7) to fill-in the incomplete coverage by SDSS of luminous galaxies. We perform a spectral classification of the nuclei of galaxies (with a completeness of 98% at r<17.77), classifying the nuclear spectra in six classes: three of them (SEY, sAGN, LIN) refer to AGNs and the remaining three (HII, RET, PAS) refer to different stages of starburst activity. To perform such classification, we use the WHAN diagnostic, after correcting Halpha by 1.3 A for underlying absorption. We find that 482 (10%) of 5027 galaxies host an AGN: their frequency strongly increases with increasing luminosity of the parent galaxies, such that 32% of galaxies with Log(i-Lum)<10.2 (Solar) harbor an AGN at their interior. In addition to their presence in luminous galaxies, AGNs are also found in red galaxies with < 1.15 \pm 0.15 mag. The majority of SEY and sAGN (strong AGNs) are associated with luminous late-type (or S0a) galaxies, while LIN (weak AGNs) and RET ("retired"), are mostly found among E/S0as. The number density of AGNs, HII region-like, and retired galaxies is found to anti-correlate with the local density of galaxies, such that their frequency drops by a factor of two near the cluster cores, while the frequency of galaxies containing passive nuclei increases by the same amount towards the center of rich clusters.
