Modeling of wrinkles and folds formation in single and multilayer graphene sheets lying on flat deformable (polymer) substrates has been carried out. It is shown that the deformability of the substrate leads to the appearance of significant features. In contrast to the flat surfaces of rigid crystals molecules of soft polymer substrates can penetrate into wrinkles and folds of the graphene sheet, completely filling the voids beneath the sheet. Moreover, the vertical folds of the sheet can be directed not only upward from the substrate, but also down into the substrate, penetrating it. By modeling the uniaxial compression of the two-component graphene/polymer system, the external pressure and thermal vibrations of the substrate molecules have been taken into account. High external pressure $p\ge 150$~bar leads to a noticeable additional stabilization of the initial ground state of the system. At uniaxial compression above the critical value, a system of localized wrinkles whose interior is filled with molecules of the substrate appears in the graphene sheet. Increasing temperature leads to an increase in the size of wrinkles and to a decrease in their number. The largest wrinkles form before the substrate begins to melt. Melting leads to the complete disappearance of all wrinkles and small folds. Cooling of the melted substrate leads to its crystallization, but the system of wrinkles in the graphene sheet on the surface is not restored. Therefore, melting of the polymer substrate and its subsequent cooling can serve as a method getting rid of localized wrinkles and folds of the graphene sheet., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures

We demonstrate complete control over dynamics of a single superconducting vortex in a nanostructure which we coin the Single Vortex Box (SVB). Our device allows us to trap the vortex in a field-cooled aluminum nanosquare and expel it on demand with a nanosecond pulse of electrical current. We read-out the vortex state of the box by testing the switching current of the adjacent Dayem nanobridge. Using the time-resolving nanothermometry we measure 4$\cdot$10$^{-19}\,$J as the amount of the dissipated heat (which is the energy of a single red photon) in the elementary process of the vortex expulsion, and monitor the following thermal relaxation of the device. The measured heat is equal to the energy required to annihilate all Cooper pairs on the way of the moving vortex. Our design and measuring protocol are convenient for studying the stochastic mechanism of the vortex escape from current-driven superconducting nanowires, which has its roots either in thermal or quantum fluctuations, similar to ones widely studied in Josephson junctions or magnetic nanoclusters and molecules. Our experiment enlightens the thermodynamics of the absorption process in the superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors, in which vortices are perceived to be essential for a formation of a detectable hot spot. The demonstrated opportunity to manipulate a single superconducting vortex reliably in a confined geometry comprises in fact a proof-of-concept of a nanoscale non-volatile memory cell with sub-nanosecond write and read operations, which offers compatibility with quantum processors based either on superconducting qubits or rapid single flux quantum circuits.

The observation of the gate-controlled supercurrent (GCS) effect in superconducting nanostructures increased the hopes for realizing a superconducting equivalent of semiconductor field-effect transistors. However, recent works attribute this effect to various leakage-based scenarios, giving rise to a debate on its origin. A proper understanding of the microscopic process underlying the GCS effect and the relevant time scales would be beneficial to evaluate the possible applications. In this work, we observed gate-induced two-level fluctuations between the superconducting state and normal state in Al/InAs nanowires (NWs). Noise correlation measurements show a strong correlation with leakage current fluctuations. The time-domain measurements show that these fluctuations have Poissonian statistics. Our detailed analysis of the leakage current measurements reveals that it is consistent with the stress-induced leakage current (SILC), in which inelastic tunneling with phonon generation is the predominant transport mechanism. Our findings shed light on the microscopic origin of the GCS effect and give deeper insight into the switching dynamics of the superconducting NW under the influence of the strong gate voltage.

Carbon nanotubes are nano-objects with quite anisotropic properties, for example the mechanical properties in longitudinal and radial directions differ significantly. This feature of the carbon nanotubes yields many interesting phenomena investigated in last decades. One of them is the ability to form both hollow and collapsed states if the radius of the nanotube is large enough. The transitions between the two states have been also reported. In our study we present single-walled carbon nanotube interacting with a plane substrate and characterize the energy of interaction with the substrate using effective Lennard-Jones-type potential. We show energy of the homogeneous open and collapsed states depending on the radius of the carbon nanotube and report on the bi-stability in some range of the nanotube diameters. Using the molecular-dynamical simulations we look at the evolution of the initial half-opened, half-collapsed state and demonstrate that the transition area from one state to another is spatially localized having features of topological soliton (kink or anti-kink). We show that the value and the direction of the kink propagation speed depend significantly on the nanotube diameter as well as on the temperature of the system. We study numerically the dynamics of acetanilide (ACN) molecules placed on a flat surface of a multilayer hexagonal boron nitride structure. We demonstrate that the ACN molecules, being achiral in three dimensions, become chiral after being placed on the substrate. Homochirality of the ACN molecules leads to stable secondary structures stabilized by hydrogen bonds between peptide groups of the molecules. Numerical simulations of systems of such molecules reveal that the structure of the resulting hydrogen-bond chains depends on the isomeric composition of the molecules. If all molecules are homochiral (i.e. only one isomer is present), they form secondary structures (chains of hydrogen bonds in the shapes of arcs, circles, and spirals). If the molecules at the substrate form a racemic mixture, then no regular secondary structures appear, and only curvilinear chains of hydrogen bonds of random shapes can emerge. A hydrogen-bond chain can form a straight zigzag only if it has an alternation of isomers. Such chains can create two-dimensional (2D) regular lattices, or 2D crystals. The melting scenarios of such 2D crystals depend on density of its coverage of the substrate. At 25% coverage, melting occurs continuously in a certain temperature interval. The nonlinear dynamics of a one-dimensional molecular crystal in the form of a chain of planar coronene molecules is analyzed. Using molecular dynamics, it is shown that a chain of coronene molecules supports acoustic solitons, rotobreathers, and discrete breathers. An increase in the size of planar molecules in a chain leads to an increase in the number of internal degrees of freedom. This results in an increase in the rate of emission of phonons from spatially localized nonlinear excitations and a decrease in their lifetime. Presented results contribute to the understanding of the effect of the rotational and internal vibrational modes of molecules on the nonlinear dynamics of molecular crystals., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures

The study of thermal transport in low-dimensional materials has attracted a lot of attention recently after discovery of high thermal conductivity of graphene. Here we study numerically phonon transport in low-dimensional carbon structures being interested in the hydrodynamic regime revealed through the observation of second sound. We demonstrate that correct numerical modeling of such two-dimensional systems requires semi-classical molecular dynamics simulations of temperature waves that take into account quantum statistics of thermalized phonons. We reveal that second sound can be attributed to the maximum group velocity of bending optical oscillations of carbon structures, and the hydrodynamic effects disappear for $T>200$K, being replaced by diffusive dynamics of thermal waves. Our numerical results suggest that the velocity of second sound in such low-dimensional structures is about 6 km/s, and the hydrodynamic effects are manifested stronger in carbon nanotubes rather than in carbon nanoribbons., Comment: 13 pages, 15 figures

It is shown using the method of molecular dynamics that the motion of carbon nanoparticles (rectangular graphene flakes, spherical fullerenes of size $L<10$ nm) on the surface of a thermalized graphene sheet lying on a flat substrate can be described as the motion of particles in a viscous medium with a constant coefficient of friction, the value of which depends on the temperature and particle size. It has been shown that there are two types of effective friction: diffusion and ballistic. In ballistic regime of motion (at velocities $v>100$ m/s), deceleration occurs due to the interaction of moving nanoparticles with thermal out-of-plane bending vibrations of a graphene sheet. Because of this, with the increasing temperature, the coefficient of friction monotonically increases. In the diffusion regime of motion (at $v<10$ m/s), friction arises due to the need for the particle to overcome local energy barriers, therefore it decreases with increasing emperature. The difference between ballistic and diffusion friction is most pronounced at low temperatures, since the mobility of nanoparticles in the ballistic regime of motion decreases with increasing temperature, while in the diffusion regime it monotonously increases. It is shown that the presence of a normal force pressing the nanoparticle to the substrate leads to an increases in its friction with the substrate., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures

Entangled microwave photons form a fundamental resource for quantum information processing and sensing with continuous variables. We use a low-loss Josephson metamaterial comprising superconducting, non-linear, asymmetric inductive elements to generate frequency-entangled photons from vacuum fluctuations at a rate of 2 giga entangled bits per second spanning over 4 GHz bandwidth. The device is operated as a traveling wave parametric amplifier under Kerr-relieving biasing conditions. It is shown by the method of molecular dynamics using a chain model that a multilayer packaging of identical single-walled carbon nanotubes with a diameter of D>2.5 nm located on a flat substrate is a multistable system. The system has many stationary states, which are characterized by the portion of collapsed nanotubes. The thickness of the package monotonically decreases with an increase in the portion of such nanotubes. For nanotubes with a chirality index (60,0), depending on the portion of collapsed nanotubes, the thickness of the 11-layer package can vary from 12 to 36 nm. All stationary states of the package are stable to thermal fluctuations at T=300K. The transverse compression of the package is not elastic; due to the collapse of a part of the nanotubes, it only transfers the package from one stationary state to another with a smaller thickness., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures

Rotobreathers in the chain of coupled linearly elastic rotators are analyzed. Each rotator is a particle connected by a massless elastic rod with a frictionless pivot; it has two degrees of freedom, length and angle of rotation. The rods of the rotators and the elastic bonds between the nearest rotators are linearly elastic, and the nonlinearity of the system is of a purely geometric nature. It is shown that long-lived rotobreathers can exist if the stiffness of the rods is high enough to create a relatively wide gap in the phonon spectrum of the chain. The frequency of angular rotation of the rotobreather cannot be above the optical band of the phonon spectrum and is in the spectrum gap. Generally speaking, the rotation of the rotobreather is accompanied by radial oscillations, however, one can choose such initial conditions so that the radial oscillations are minimal. Some parameters of rotobreathers with minimal radial vibrations are presented on the basis of numerical simulations. Natural and resonant oscillations of suspended circular graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) membranes (single-layer sheets lying on a flat substrate having a circular hole of radius $R$) have been simulated using full-atomic models. Substrates formed by flat surfaces of graphite and h-BN crystal, hexagonal ice, silicon carbide 6H-SiC and nickel surface (111) have been used. The presence of the substrate leads to the forming of a gap at the bottom of the frequency spectrum of transversal vibrations of the sheet. The frequencies of natural oscillations of the membrane (oscillations localized on the suspended section of the sheet) always lie in this gap, and the frequencies of oscillations decrease by increasing radius of the membrane as $(R+R_i)^{-2}$ with nonezero effective increase of radius $R_i>0$. The modeling of the sheet dynamics has shown that small periodic transversal displacements of the substrate lead to resonant vibrations of the membranes at frequencies close to eigenfrequencies of nodeless vibrations of membranes with a circular symmetry. The energy distribution of resonant vibrations of the membrane has a circular symmetry and several nodal circles, whose number $i$ coincides with the number of the resonant frequency. The frequencies of the resonances decrease by increasing the radius of the membrane as $(R+R_i)^{\alpha_i}$ with exponent $\alpha_i<2$. The lower rate of resonance frequency decrease is caused by the anharmonicity of membrane vibrations., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

Low dimensional fermionic quantum systems are exceptionally interesting because they reveal distinctive physical phenomena, including among others, topologically protected excitations, edge states, frustration, and fractionalization. Two-dimensional $^3$He has indeed shown a remarkable variety of phases including the unusual quantum spin liquid. Our aim was to lower the dimension of the $^3$He system even more by confining it on a suspended carbon nanotube. In our measurements the mechanical resonance of the nanotube with adsorbed sub-monolayer of $^3$He was measured as a function of coverage and temperature down to 10\;mK. At lowest temperatures and low coverages we have observed a liquid-gas coexistence which transforms to the famous 1/3 commensurate solid phase at intermediate densities. However, at larger monolayer densities we have observed a quantum phase transition from 1/3 solid to a completely new, soft and mobile solid phase. We interpret this mobile solid phase as a bosonic commensurate crystal consisting of helium dimers with topologically protected zero-point vacancies which are delocalized at low temperatures. We thus demonstrate that $^3$He on a nanotube merges both fermionic and bosonic phenomena, with a quantum phase transition between fermionic solid 1/3 phase and a newly observed bosonic dimer solid. Using the molecular dynamics method, dynamics of hydrogen bond (HB) networks emerging on the surface of a graphene sheet during its functionalization with hydroxyl groups OH are simulated. It is demonstrated that two OH groups form an energetically more advantageous structure when they are covalently attached on one side of the sheet to carbon atoms forming opposite vertices of one hexagon of valence bonds of the sheet. Attaching of OH groups to carbon atoms located at the opposite vertices of hexagons of valence bonds leads to the emergence of hydroxygraphene C$_4$(OH). In such sheet lying on a flat substrate, attached oxygen atoms on its outer surface form a hexagonal lattice, and hydroxyl groups due to their turns can in various ways form chains of hydrogen bonds. The modification of the sheet from two sides results in forming of hydroxygraphene C$_2$(OH) with HB networks on both sides of the graphene sheet. Simulation of the dynamics of these sheets shows that their heat capacity at low temperatures $TT_0$ is explained by the "melting" of the lattice. For one chain of OH groups connected to the outer side of a nanoribbon the melting temperature is $T_0=500$K, while for a graphene sheet C4(OH) modified on one side $T_0=260$K, and for a graphene sheet C$_2$(OH) modified on both sides $T_0=485$K., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures

We study correlated switchings of superconducting nanobridge probed with train of current pulses. For pulses with low repetition rate each pulse transits the superconducting bridge to normal state with probability $P$ independent of the outcomes in the preceding pulses. We show that with reduction of the time interval between pulses long range correlation between pulses occurs: stochastic switching in a single pulse rises temperature of the bridge and affects outcome of the probing for next pulses. As a result, an artificial intricate stochastic process with adjustable strength of correlation is produced. We identify regime where apparent switching probability exhibits the thermal hysteresis with discontinuity at a critical current amplitude of the probing pulse. This engineered stochastic process can be viewed as an artificial phase transition and provides an interesting framework for studying correlated systems. The process resembles the familiar transition from superconducting to normal state in the current-bias nanowire, proceeding through phase slip avalanche. Due to its extreme sensitivity on the control parameter, i.e. electric current, temperature or magnetic field, it offers opportunity for ultra-sensitive detection.

Propagation and relaxation of nonequilibrium quasiparticles in superconductors are of key importance for functioning of numerous nanoscale devices, enabling operation of some of them, and limiting the performance of the others. The quasiparticles heated above lattice temperature may relax locally via phonon or photon emission channels, or diffuse over appreciable distances in a nanostructure altering the functionality of their remote components. Tracing quasiparticles experimentally in real-time domain has remained the challenging task owing to their rapid dynamics. With electronic nanothermometry, based on probing of the temperature-dependent switching current of a superconducting nanobridge, we monitor heat pulse carried by a flux of nonequilibrium quasiparticles as it passes by our detector with a noise-equivalent temperature of $10\,$mK /$ \sqrt N$, where $N$ is the number of pulses probing the bridge (typically $N=10000$), and temporal resolution of a single nanosecond. The measurement provides the picture of quasiparticle diffusion in a superconducting aluminum strip and direct determination of the diffusion constant $D$ equal to $100$ cm$^2$/s with no energy dependence visible.

We study the dependence of mechanical conformations of graphene sheets located on flat substrates on the density of unilateral (one-side) attachment of hydrogen, fluorine or chlorine atoms to them. It is shown that chemically modified graphene sheet can take four main forms on a flat substrate: the form of a flat sheet located parallel to the surface of the substrate, the form of convex sheet partially detached from the substrate with bent edges adjacent to the substrate, and the forms of single and double rolls on the substrate. On the surface of crystalline graphite, the flat form of the sheet is lowest in energy for hydrogenation density p <0.21, fluorination density p<0.20 and chlorination density p<0.16. The surface of crystalline nickel has higher adsorption energy for graphene monolayer and the flat form of chemically modified sheet on such substrate is lowest in energy for hydrogenation density p<0.47, fluorination density p<0.30 and chlorination density p<0.21. The flat shape of the graphene sheet remains basic on a substrate also when molecular groups CH3, CH2-CH3 or rings C6H5 are one-side attached to its outer surface. At the attachment density p=1/6 (one group per 6 sheet atoms) the sheet becomes the nanocarpet the basis of which is formed by a sheet of graphene and the pile of which is formed by the attached molecular groups forming a tightly packed regular lattice. The addition of hydroxyl groups OH with attachment density p=1/4 leads to the formation of hexagonal lattices of hydroxyl groups on the outer surface of graphene sheet on a substrate. In this lattice, the groups can form various configurations of hydrogen bonds, which turns the chemically modified sheet into a multistable system., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures

The model of thermal rectifier based on the asymmetry of interaction of the molecular chain ends with thermostats is proposed in this work. The rectification mechanism is not related to the chain asymmetry, but to the asymmetry of the interaction of chain ends with thermostats, for instance, due to different lengths of the end thermostats. The chain can be homogeneous, it is only important that the thermal conductivity of the chain should depend on temperature strict monotonically. The effect is maximal when convergence of the thermal conductivity with increasing length just begins to manifest itself. In this case, the efficiency of thermal rectification can reach 25%. These conditions are met for carbon nanoribbons and nanotubes. Therefore, they can be ideal objects for the construction of thermal rectifiers based on the asymmetric interaction with thermostats. Numerical simulation of heat transfer shows that the rectification of heat transfer can reach 14% for nanoribbons and 22% for nanotubes., Comment: 11 pages, 16 figures

We have investigated surface shear waves at 22 MHz in a 0.5-micron-thick polymer film on SiO2/Si substrate at low temperatures using suspended and non-suspended graphene as detectors. By tracking ultrasound modes detected by oscillations of a trilayer graphene membrane both in vacuum and in helium superfluid, we assign the resonances to surface shear modes, generalized Love waves, in the resist/silicon-substrate system loaded with gold. The propagation velocity of these shear modes displays a logarithmic temperature dependence below 1 K, which is characteristic for modification of the elastic properties of a disordered solid owing to a large density of two level state (TLS) systems. For the dissipation of the shear mode, we find a striking logarithmic temperature dependence, which indicates a basic relation between the speed of the surface wave propagation and the mode dissipation., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures

In this letter, we investigate the effect of orbital angular momentum (OAM) on elastic photon-photon scattering in vacuum for the first time. We define exact solutions to the vacuum electro-magnetic wave equation which carry OAM. Using those, the expected coupling between three initialwaves is derived in the framework of an effective field theory based on the Euler-Heisenberg La-grangian and shows that OAM adds a signature to the generated photons thereby greatly improvingthe signal-to-noise ratio. Josephson junctions and superconducting wires when probed with current pulses exhibit stochastic switching from superconducting to a stable non-zero voltage state. Electrical current dependence of the switching probability (so called S-curve) or switching current distribution is a fingerprint of the physics governing the escape process. This work addresses the criterion of independent switching event in a series of switching experiments. Treating Josephson junction as an electrical coin with current-tuned switching probability we investigate effect of correlation between switching events on the switching statistics.

The COMPASS force field has been successfully applied in a large number of materials simulations, including the analysis of structural, electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties of carbon nanoparticles. This force field has been parameterized using quantum mechanical data and is based on hundreds of molecules as a training set, but such analysis for graphene sheets was not carried out. The objective of the present study is the verification of how good the COMPASS force field parameters can accurately describe the frequency spectrum of atomic vibrations of graphene, graphane and fluorographene sheets. We showed that the COMPASS force field allows to describe with good accuracy the frequency spectrum of atomic vibrations of graphane and fluorographene sheets, whose honeycomb hexagonal lattice is formed by sp3 hybridization. On the other hand, the force field doesn't describe very well the frequency spectrum of graphene sheet, whose planar hexagonal lattice is formed by sp2 banding. In that case the frequency spectrum of out-of-plane vibrations differs greatly from the experimental data - bending stiffness of a graphene sheet is strongly over estimated. We present the correction of parameters of out-of-plane and torsional potentials of the force field, that allows to achieve the coincidence of vibration frequency with experimental data. After such corrections the COMPASS force field can be used to describe the dynamics of flat graphene sheets and carbon nanotubes., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

Single electron transistors (SETs) fabricated from single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) can be operated as highly sensitive charge detectors reaching sensitivity levels comparable to metallic radio frequency SETs (rf-SETs). Here we demonstrate how the charge sensitivity of the device can be improved by using the mechanical oscillations of a single-walled carbon nanotube quantum dot. To optimize the charge sensitivity $\delta Q$, we drive the mechanical resonator far into the nonlinear regime and bias it to an operating point where the mechanical third order nonlinearity is cancelled out. This way we enhance $\delta Q$, from 6 $\mu e/\sqrt{\textrm{Hz}}$ for the static case, to 0.97 $\mu e/\sqrt{\textrm{Hz}}$, at a probe frequency of $\sim$ 1.3 kHz., Comment: 8 pages + 12 page supplement

One-dimensional chain of pointwise particles harmonically coupled with nearest neighbors and placed in six-order polynomial on-site potentials is considered. Power of the energy source in the form of single ac driven particles is calculated numerically for different amplitudes $A$ and frequencies $\omega$ within the linear phonon band. The results for the on-site potentials with hard and soft nonlinearity types are compared. For the hard-type nonlinearity, it is shown that when the driving frequency is close to (far from) the {\em upper} edge of the phonon band, the power of the energy source normalized to $A^2$ increases (decreases) with increasing $A$. In contrast, for the soft-type nonlinearity, the normalized power of the energy source increases (decreases) with increasing $A$ when the driving frequency is close to (far from) the {\em lower} edge of the phonon band. Our further demonstrations indicate that, in the case of hard (soft) anharmonicity, the chain can support movable discrete breathers (DBs) with frequencies above (below) the phonon band. It is the energy source quasi-periodically emitting moving DBs in the regime with driving frequency close to the DBs frequency, that induces the increase of the power. Therefore, our results here support the mechanism that the moving DBs can assist energy transfer from the ac driven particle to the chain., Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures

Novel plasma-clustered deposition technique, called PVD Droplets, as well as its main principles of operation were described. New types of obtained thick, over 20 {\mu}m, functional coatings basing on Ta and Zr have been presented. Results of research in physic-chemical properties of the coating materials are listed including preliminary studies of superconductive properties. We have employed noise thermometry for investigations of thermal relaxation between the electrons and the substrate in nanowires patterned from 40-nm-thick titanium film on top of silicon wafers covered by a native oxide. By controlling the electronic temperature $T_e$ by Joule heating at the base temperature of a dilution refrigerator, we probe the electron-phonon coupling and the thermal boundary resistance at temperatures $T_e= 0.5 - 3$ Kelvin. Using a regular $T^5$-dependent electron-phonon coupling of clean metals and a $T^4$-dependent interfacial heat flow, we deduce a small contribution for the direct energy transfer from the titanium electrons to the substrate phonons due to inelastic electron-boundary scattering., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures

Quartz tuning forks are high-quality mechanical oscillators widely used in low temperature physics as viscometers, thermometers and pressure sensors. We demonstrate that a fork placed in liquid helium near the surface of solid helium is very sensitive to the oscillations of the solid-liquid interface. We developed a double-resonance read-out technique which allowed us to detect oscillations of the surface with an accuracy of 1 Angs in 10 sec. Using this technique we have investigated crystallization waves in 4He down to 10 mK. In contrast to previous studies of crystallization waves, our measurement scheme has very low dissipation, on the order of 20 pW, which allows us to carry out experiments even at sub-mK temperatures. We propose to use this scheme in the search for crystallization waves in 3He, which exist only at temperatures well below 0.5 mK.

We provide molecular dynamics simulation of heat transport and thermal energy diffusion in one-dimensional molecular chains with different interparticle pair potentials at zero and non-zero temperature. We model the thermal conductivity (TC) and energy diffusion in the coupled rotator chain and in the Lennard-Jones chain either without or with the confining parabolic interatomic potential. The considered chains without the confining potential have normal TC and energy diffusion, while the corresponding chains with the confining potential are characterized by anomalous (diverging with the system length) TC and superdiffusion of energy. We confirm in such a way that, surprisingly, the confinement makes both heat transport and energy diffusion anomalous in low-dimensional phononic systems. We show that the chain, which has a finite TC, is also characterized by the normal energy diffusion in the thermalized chain (at non-zero temperature), while the superdiffusion of thermal energy occurs in the thermalized chains with only anomalous TC. We present the arguments, supported by our simulations, that the scaling relation between the exponents in time dependence of the mean square displacement of thermal energy distribution and in length dependence of the anomalous TC is not universal and can be different, depending on the main mechanism of energy transport: by weakly-scattered waves or by noninteracting colliding particles performing Levy flights., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

Carbon nanoscroll is a unique topologically open configuration of graphene nanoribbon possessing outstanding properties and application perspectives due to its morphology. However molecular dynamics study of nanoscrolls with more than a few coils is limited by computational power. Here, we propose a simple model of the molecular chain moving in the plane, allowing to describe the folded and rolled packaging of long graphene nanoribbons. The model is used to describe a set of possible stationary states and the low-frequency oscillation modes of isolated single-layer nanoribbon scrolls as the function of the nanoribbon length. Possible conformational changes of scrolls due to thermal fluctuations are analyzed and their thermal stability is examined. Using the full-atomic model, frequency spectrum of thermal vibrations is calculated for the scroll and compared to that of the flat nanoribbon. It is shown that the density of phonon states of the scroll differs from the one of the flat nanoribbon only in the low (omega<100 cm-1) and high (omega>1450 cm-1) frequency ranges. Finally, the linear thermal expansion coefficient for the scroll outer radius is calculated from the long-term dynamics with the help of the developed planar chain model. The paper considers heat transport in diatomic one-dimensional lattices, containing equal amounts of particles with different masses. Ordering of the particles in the chain is governed by single correlation parameter -- the probability for two neighboring particles to have the same mass. As this parameter grows from zero to unity, the structure of the chain varies from regular staggering chain to completely random configuration, and then -- to very long clusters of particles with equal masses. Therefore, this correlation parameter allows a control of typical cluster size in the chain. In order to explore different regimes of the heat transport, two interatomic potentials are considered. The first one is an infinite potential wall, corresponding to instantaneous elastic collisions between the neighboring particles. In homogeneous chains such interaction leads to an anomalous heat transport. The other one is classical Lennard-Jones interatomic potential, which leads to a normal heat transport. The simulations demonstrate that the correlated disorder of the particle arrangement does not change the convergence properties of the heat conduction coefficient, but essentially modifies its value. For the collision potential, one observes essential growth of the coefficient for fixed chain length as the limit of large homogeneous clusters is approached. The thermal transport in these models remains superdiffusive. In the Lennard-Jones chain the effect of correlation appears to be not monotonous in the limit of low temperatures. We discuss a possibility to control a heat conductivity in simple one-dimensional models of dielectrics by means of external mechanical loads. To illustrate such possibilities we consider first a well-studied chain with degenerate double-well potential of the interparticle interaction. Contrary to previous studies, we consider varying length of the chain with fixed number of particles. Number of possible energetically degenerate ground states strongly depends on the overall length of the chain, or, in other terms, on average length of the link between neighboring particles. These degenerate states correspond to mechanical equilibrium, therefore one can say that the transition between them mimics to some extent a process of plastic deformation. We demonstrate that such modification of the chain length can lead to quite profound (almost five-fold) reduction of the heat conduction coefficient. Even more profound effect is revealed for a model with single-well non-convex potential. It is demonstrated that in certain range of constant external forcing this model becomes "effectively"\ double-well, and has a multitude of possible states of equilibrium for the same value of the external load. Thus, the heat conduction coefficient can be reduced by two orders of magnitude. We suggest a mechanical model of a chain with periodic double-well potential, which allows control over the heat conduction. The models considered may be useful for description of heat transport in biological macromolecules and for control of the heat transport in microsystems., Comment: 10 pages, 16 figures

We study the properties of localized vibrational modes associated with structural defects in a sheet of graphene. For the example of the Stone-Wales defects, one- and two-atom vacancies, many-atom linear vacancies, and adatoms in a honeycomb lattice, we demonstrate that the local defect modes are characterized by stable oscillations with the frequencies lying outside the linear frequency bands of an ideal graphene. In the frequency spectral density of thermal oscillations, such localized defect modes lead to the additional peaks from the right side of the frequency band of the ideal sheet of graphene. Thus, the general structure of the frequency spectral density can provide a fingerprint of its quality and the type of quantity of the structural defect a graphene sheet may contain., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures
