Pivotal within quantum physics, the concept of quantum incompatibility is generally related to algebraic aspects of the formalism, such as commutation relations and unbiasedness of bases. Recently, the concept was identified as a resource in tasks involving quantum state discrimination and quantum programmability. Here we link quantum incompatibility with the amount of information that can be extracted from a system upon successive measurements of noncommuting observables, a scenario related to communication tasks. This approach leads us to characterize incompatibility as a resource encoded in a physical context, which involves both the quantum state and observables. Moreover, starting with a measure of context incompatibility we derive a measurement-incompatibility quantifier that is easily computable, admits a geometrical interpretation, and is maximum only if the eigenbases of the involved observables are mutually unbiased., Comment: 5+4 pages, 1 figure

4. Enhancing trustworthiness in ML-based network intrusion detection with uncertainty quantification

A crucial role in the security of modern networks is played by Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs), security devices designed to identify and mitigate attacks to networks structure. Data-driven approaches based on Machine Learning (ML) have gained more and more popularity for executing the classification tasks required by signature-based IDSs. However, typical ML models adopted for this purpose do not properly take into account the uncertainty associated with their prediction. This poses significant challenges, as they tend to produce misleadingly high classification scores for both misclassified inputs and inputs belonging to unknown classes (e.g. novel attacks), limiting the trustworthiness of existing ML-based solutions. In this paper, we argue that ML-based IDSs should always provide accurate uncertainty quantification to avoid overconfident predictions. In fact, an uncertainty-aware classification would be beneficial to enhance closed-set classification performance, would make it possible to carry out Active Learning, and would help recognize inputs of unknown classes as truly unknowns, unlocking open-set classification capabilities and Out-of-Distribution (OoD) detection. To verify it, we compare various ML-based methods for uncertainty quantification and open-set classification, either specifically designed for or tailored to the domain of network intrusion detection. Moreover, we develop a custom model based on Bayesian Neural Networks that stands out for its OoD detection capabilities and robustness, with a lower variance in the results over different scenarios, compared to other baselines, thus showing how proper uncertainty quantification can be exploited to significantly enhance the trustworthiness of ML-based IDSs.

5. Introducing packet-level analysis in programmable data planes to advance Network Intrusion Detection

Programmable data planes offer precise control over the low-level processing steps applied to network packets, serving as a valuable tool for analysing malicious flows in the field of intrusion detection. Albeit with limitations on physical resources and capabilities, they allow for the efficient extraction of detailed traffic information, which can then be utilised by Machine Learning (ML) algorithms responsible for identifying security threats. In addressing resource constraints, existing solutions in the literature rely on compressing network data through the collection of statistical traffic features in the data plane. While this compression saves memory resources in switches and minimises the burden on the control channel between the data and the control plane, it also results in a loss of information available to the Network Intrusion Detection System (NIDS), limiting access to packet payload, categorical features, and the semantic understanding of network communications, such as the behaviour of packets within traffic flows. This paper proposes P4DDLe, a framework that exploits the flexibility of P4-based programmable data planes for packet-level feature extraction and pre-processing. P4DDLe leverages the programmable data plane to extract raw packet features from the network traffic, categorical features included, and to organise them in a way that the semantics of traffic flows are preserved. To minimise memory and control channel overheads, P4DDLe selectively processes and filters packet-level data, so that only the features required by the NIDS are collected. The experimental evaluation with recent Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack data demonstrates that the proposed approach is very efficient in collecting compact and high-quality representations of network flows, ensuring precise detection of DDoS attacks.

As it is happening in many fields that need efficient and effective classification of data, Machine Learning (ML) is becoming increasingly popular in network management and monitoring. In general we can say that ML algorithms are complex, therefore better suited for execution in the centralized control plane of modern networks, but are also heavily reliant on data, that are necessarily collected in the data plane. The inevitable consequence is that may arise the need to transfer lots of data from the data plane to the control plane, with the risk to cause congestion on the control communication channel. This may turn into a major drawback, since congestion on the control channel may have a significant impact on network operations. Therefore it is of paramount importance to design systems capable of minimizing the interaction between data and control planes while ensuring good monitoring performance. The most recent generation of data plane programmable switches supporting the P4 language can help mitigate this problem by preprocessing traffic data at line rate. In this manuscript we follow this approach and propose P4RTHENON: an architecture to distill in the data plane the relevant information to be mirrored to the control plane, where complex analysis can be performed. P4RTHENON leverages the P4-native support for runtime data plane pipeline reconfiguration to minimize the interaction between data and control planes while ensuring good monitoring performance. We tested our scheme on the volumetric DDoS detection use case: P4RTHENON reduces the volume of exchanged data by almost 75% compared to a pure control-plane-based solution, guarantees low memory consumption in the data plane, and does not degrade the overall DDoS detection capabilities.

8. Hierarchical Multiclass Continual Learning for Network Intrusion Detection

- Abstract
The evolution of Internet and its related communication technologies have consistently increased the risk of cyberattacks. In this context, a crucial role is played by Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs), which are security devices designed to identify and mitigate attacks to modern networks. In the last decade, data-driven approaches based on Machine Learning (ML) have gained more and more popularity for executing the classification tasks required by signature based IDSs. However, typical ML models adopted for this purpose are trained in static settings while new attacks – and variants of known attacks – dynamically emerge over time. As a consequence, there is the need of keeping the IDS capability constantly updated, which poses peculiar challenges especially in resourced-constrained scenarios. To this end, we propose a novel hierarchical model based on a binary classification of benign and malicious traffic performed by a Bayesian Neural Network that is trained continuously and efficiently by exploiting Continual Learning. A generative multiclass classifier is then adopted to incrementally classify new kinds of attacks with respect to the malicious traffic. We prove the effectiveness of our approach showing that it removes the need of storing network traffic data samples related to historical data, representative of all the kinds of attacks, while ensuring good detection capabilities.

In a computing context characterized by a complex and interconnected network of heterogeneous devices, which generate enormous amounts of data requiring exchange and near-real-time processing, the collaboration between Edge Computing and Function as a Service (FaaS) models holds significant potential to enhance the flexibility, cost-effectiveness, and responsiveness of applications. However, traditional FaaS encounters challenges in distributed edge environments due to dynamic traffic demands and resource limitations. Effective methodologies must be developed to address the load management issue, which involves determining the allocation of incoming requests to each node and deciding whether to process them locally, reject them, or offload them to neighboring nodes with available resources. This paper investigates and compares various approaches for managing incoming requests in a Decentralized FaaS environment. On the one hand, it considers Actor-Critic Reinforcement Learning algorithms, namely Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) and Soft Actor-Critic (SAC). On the other hand, it examines the NeuroEvolution of Augmenting Topologies (NEAT) method. Experimental validation underscores the promising results of PPO, which ensures an average rejection rate of less than 4%.

The Edge Computing paradigm has emerged to address new requirements in data processing. This approach enables the decentralization of computation by bringing computing capabilities to the edge of the network, i.e., close to the data sources, offering various benefits such as reduced latency and minimal network bandwidth consumption. In this context, Function as a Service (FaaS) emerges as a versatile and efficient solution, representing a specific instantiation of the Serverless Computing model. FaaS provides a scalable and reactive infrastructure that can be effectively applied to Edge Computing. Given the limited resource capacity of Edge nodes, appropriate load balancing is crucial. However, conducting on-field testing of any designed solution for this purpose can be arduous and time-consuming. This work addresses this challenge by proposing a simulation-based framework to design and evaluate load-management policies in decentralized FaaS environments. Additionally, we validate and compare four different load-balancing strategies, each characterized by varying degrees of complexity. Our experimental campaign demonstrates the effectiveness of the framework and our load-management methods across different operational scenarios.

We consider the problem of forecasting the Quality-of-Transmission (QoT) of deployed lightpaths in a Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) optical network. QoT forecasting plays a determinant role in network management and planning, as it allows network operators to proactively plan maintenance or detect anomalies in a lightpath. To this end, we leverage Bayesian Recurrent Neural Networks for learning uncertainty-aware probabilistic QoT forecasts, i.e., for modelling a probability distribution of the QoT over a time horizon. We evaluate our proposed approach on the open-source Microsoft Wide Area Network (WAN) optical backbone dataset. Our illustrative numerical results show that our approach not only outperforms state-of-the-art models from literature, but also predicts intervals providing near-optimal empirical coverage. As such, we demonstrate that uncertainty-aware probabilistic modelling enables the application of QoT forecasting in risk-sensitive application scenarios.

The increased demand for high-quality Internet connectivity resulting from the growing number of connected devices and advanced services has put significant strain on telecommunication networks. In response, cutting-edge technologies such as Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and Software Defined Networking (SDN) have been introduced to transform network infrastructure. These innovative solutions offer dynamic, efficient, and easily manageable networks that surpass traditional approaches. To fully realize the benefits of NFV and maintain the performance level of specialized equipment, it is critical to assess the behavior of Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) and the impact of virtualization overhead. This paper delves into understanding how various factors such as resource allocation, consumption, and traffic load impact the performance of VNFs. We aim to provide a detailed analysis of these factors and develop analytical functions to accurately describe their impact. By testing VNFs on different testbeds, we identify the key parameters and trends, and develop models to generalize VNF behavior. Our results highlight the negative impact of resource saturation on performance and identify the CPU as the main bottleneck. We also propose a VNF profiling procedure as a solution to model the observed trends and test more complex VNFs deployment scenarios to evaluate the impact of interconnection, co-location, and NFV infrastructure on performance.

Network Function Virtualization has established itself as one of the most important paradigms towards software-based networking. While today Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) are typically deployed in the form of serverful virtual-machine or container-based applications, the emergence of serverless computing opens the door to the possibility of implementing them as serverless functions, with benefits in terms of scalability and resource efficiency. This paper aims to assess whether this really makes sense or not, given the system-level overheads that a serverless computing platform naturally brings. We propose an open source platform designed to optimize the execution of network-intensive VNFs and we implement a data-plane and a control-plane function (i.e., NAT and DHCP responder, respectively) as serverless functions. We carry out extensive benchmarking of performance with their serverful counterparts, implemented as stand-alone containerized applications. Our experience makes it possible to conclude that serverless computing is beneficial for the execution of short-lived and request-based control-plane VNFs, while it should be avoided for the execution of data-plane traffic-intensive VNFs.

In the last few years, some research papers have proposed usage of UAVs organized in Flying Ad-Hoc Network (FANET) in remote areas with a poor or completely non-existent structured network to support novel application scenarios in which data generated by the end users must be processed on site with ultra-low latency. This way, a FANET can be seen as a provider of services and/or slices for extreme-edge 5G networks for delay-sensitive applications. However, keeping a FANET available and active is an ongoing challenge as the autonomy of UAVs is limited and strongly influenced by power consumption of both the engines and the computing element (CE) where the application functions are executed as virtual machines. In this paper, we present an optimization framework capable of increasing the overall duration of the FANET. To this purpose, we apply Reinforcement Learning (RL) based on Double Deep Q-learning (DDQN) to optimize the percentage of available CPU resources for Virtual Function virtualization, and Integer Linear Programming (ILP) to optimize VF placement inside the active UAVs of the FANET.

- Abstract
Background: Early mobilisation (EM) is an intervention that may improve the outcome of critically ill patients. There is limited data on EM in COVID-19 patients and its use during the first pandemic wave. Methods: This is a pre-planned subanalysis of the ESICM UNITE-COVID, an international multicenter observational study involving critically ill COVID-19 patients in the ICU between February 15th and May 15th, 2020. We analysed variables associated with the initiation of EM (within 72 h of ICU admission) and explored the impact of EM on mortality, ICU and hospital length of stay, as well as discharge location. Statistical analyses were done using (generalised) linear mixed-effect models and ANOVAs. Results: Mobilisation data from 4190 patients from 280 ICUs in 45 countries were analysed. 1114 (26.6%) of these patients received mobilisation within 72 h after ICU admission; 3076 (73.4%) did not. In our analysis of factors associated with EM, mechanical ventilation at admission (OR 0.29; 95% CI 0.25, 0.35; p = 0.001), higher age (OR 0.99; 95% CI 0.98, 1.00; p ≤ 0.001), pre-existing asthma (OR 0.84; 95% CI 0.73, 0.98; p = 0.028), and pre-existing kidney disease (OR 0.84; 95% CI 0.71, 0.99; p = 0.036) were negatively associated with the initiation of EM. EM was associated with a higher chance of being discharged home (OR 1.31; 95% CI 1.08, 1.58; p = 0.007) but was not associated with length of stay in ICU (adj. difference 0.91 days; 95% CI − 0.47, 1.37, p = 0.34) and hospital (adj. difference 1.4 days; 95% CI − 0.62, 2.35, p = 0.24) or mortality (OR 0.88; 95% CI 0.7, 1.09, p = 0.24) when adjusted for covariates. Conclusions: Our findings demonstrate that a quarter of COVID-19 patients received EM. There was no association found between EM in COVID-19 patients' ICU and hospital length of stay or mortality. However, EM in COVID-19 patients was associated with increased odds of being discharged home rather than to a care facility. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT04

This paper describes the Diet module of the PERCIVAL project, that aims at improving the quality of life (QoL) of patients affected by chronic diseases through the promotion, sharing, deliberation and monitoring of decisions about their different aspects among all the actors involved. The module is composed of two Android apps developed according to the principles of behavior change theories, in order to maximize the acceptability level by the user and the overall benefits for him/her. The paper focuses on the architectural, design and implementation aspects, presenting how the two apps are correlated to provide an adequate support to the user.

18. A Clustering Strategy for Enhanced FL-Based Intrusion Detection in IoT Networks

- Abstract
The Internet of Things (IoT) is growing rapidly and so the need of ensuring protection against cybersecurity attacks to IoT devices. In this scenario, Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs) play a crucial role and data-driven IDSs based on machine learning (ML) have recently attracted more and more interest by the research community. While conventional ML-based IDSs are based on a centralized architecture where IoT devices share their data with a central server for model training, we propose a novel approach that is based on federated learning (FL). However, conventional FL is ineffective in the considered scenario, due to the high statistical heterogeneity of data collected by IoT devices. To overcome this limitation, we propose a three-tier FL-based architecture where IoT devices are clustered together based on their statistical properties. Clustering decisions are taken by means of a novel entropy-based strategy, which helps improve model training performance. We tested our solution on the CIC-ToN-IoT dataset: our clustering strategy increases intrusion detection performance with respect to a conventional FL approach up to +17% in terms of F1-score, along with a significant reduction of the number of training rounds.

In fog computing customers’ microservices may demand access to connected objects, data sources and computing resources outside the domain of their fog provider In practice, the locality of connected objects renders mandatory a multi-domain approach in order to broaden the scope of resources available to a single-domain fog provider. We consider a scenario where assets from other domains can be leased across a federation of cloud-fog infrastructures. In this context, a fog provider aims to minimize the quantity of external resources to be rented to satisfy the applications’ demands while meeting their requirements. We first introduce a general framework for the deployment of applications across multiple domains owned by multiple cloud-fog providers. Hence, the resource allocation problem is formulated in the form of an integer linear program. We provide a novel heuristic method that explores the resource assignment space in a breadth-first fashion to ensure that locality constraints are met. Extensive numerical results evaluate deployment costs and feasibility of the proposed solution demonstrating that it outperforms the standard approaches adopted in the literature.

In this work we demonstrate the integration of P4 enabled switches with high level AI techniques with the aim to improve efficiency and performance of DDoS detection and mitigation. Powerful ML-based strategies are adopted only when a suspicious behaviour is occurring in the network, and its activation is triggered by a coarser-grained and lightweight strategy fully executable in the data plane.

In the last few years, some research papers have proposed usage of UAVs organized in Flying Ad-Hoc Network (FANET) in remote areas with a poor or completely non-existent structured network to support novel application scenarios in which data generated by the end users must be processed on site with ultra-low latency. This way, a FANET can be seen as a provider of services and/or slices for extreme-edge 5G networks for delay-sensitive applications. However, keeping a FANET available and active is an ongoing challenge as the autonomy of UAVs is limited and strongly influenced by power consumption of both the engines and the computing element (CE) where the application functions are executed as virtual machines. In this paper, we present an optimization framework capable of increasing the overall duration of the FANET. To this purpose, we apply Reinforcement Learning (RL) based on Double Deep Q-learning (DDQN) to optimize the percentage of available CPU resources for Virtual Function virtualization, and Integer Linear Programming (ILP) to optimize VF placement inside the active UAVs of the FANET.

Network Function Virtualization has established itself as one of the most important paradigms towards software-based networking. While today Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) are typically deployed in the form of serverful virtual-machine or container-based applications, the emergence of serverless computing opens the door to the possibility of implementing them as serverless functions, with benefits in terms of scalability and resource efficiency. This paper aims to assess whether this really makes sense or not, given the system-level overheads that a serverless computing platform naturally brings. We propose an open source platform designed to optimize the execution of network-intensive VNFs and we implement a data-plane and a control-plane function (i.e., NAT and DHCP responder, respectively) as serverless functions. We carry out extensive benchmarking of performance with their serverful counterparts, implemented as stand-alone containerized applications. Our experience makes it possible to conclude that serverless computing is beneficial for the execution of short-lived and request-based control-plane VNFs, while it should be avoided for the execution of data-plane traffic-intensive VNFs.

23. Short-Term Energy Consumption Forecasting at the Edge: A Federated Learning Approach

Residential short-term energy consumption forecasting plays an essential role in modern decentralized power systems. The rise of innovative prediction methods able to handle the high volatility of users' electrical load has posed the basis to accomplish this task. However these methods, which mostly rely on Artificial Neural Networks, require that a huge amount of users' fine-grained sensitive consumption data are centrally collected to train a generalized forecasting model, with implications on privacy and scalability. This paper proposes an innovative architecture specifically designed to overcome this need. By exploiting Federated Learning and Edge Computing capabilities, many Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) models are locally trained by different users based on their own historical energy consumption samples. Such models are then aggregated by a specific-purpose node to build a generalized model that is re-distributed for improved forecasting at the edge. For better forecasting, our proposed local training procedure takes as input relevant features related to calendar (i.e., hour, weekday and average consumption of previous days) and weather conditions (i.e., clustered apparent temperature), and the architecture can group users according to consumption similarities (using K-means) or socioeconomic affinities. We thoroughly evaluate the approach through simulations, showing that it can lead to similar forecasting performance than a state-of-the-art centralized solution in terms of Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), but with up to an order of magnitude lower training time and up to 50 times less exchanged data when samples are recorded at finer granularity than one hour. Nonetheless, it keeps sensitive data local and therefore guarantees users' privacy.

Edge Computing pushes cloud capabilities to the edge of the network, closer to the users, to address stringent Quality-of-Service requirements and ensure more efficient bandwidth usage. Function-as-a-Service appears to be the most natural service model solution to enhance Edge Computing applications' deployment and responsiveness. Unfortunately, the conventional FaaS model does not fit well in distributed and heterogeneous edge environments, where traffic demands arrive to (and are served by) edge nodes that may get overloaded under certain traffic conditions or where the access points of the network might frequently change, as for mobile applications. This short paper tries to fill this gap by proposing DFaaS, a novel decentralized FaaS-based architecture designed to autonomously balance the traffic load across edge nodes belonging to federated Edge Computing ecosystems. DFaaS implementation relies on an overlay peer-to-peer network and a distributed control plane that takes decisions on load redistribution. Although preliminary, results confirm the feasibility of the approach, showing that the system can transparently redistribute the load across edge nodes when they become overloaded.

Wearable technologies are transforming research in software and knowledge engineering research fields. In particular, expert systems have the opportunity to manage knowledge bases varying according to real-time data collected by position sensors, movement sensors, and so on. This opportunity launches a series of challenges, from the role of network technologies to allow reliable connection between applications and sensors to the definition of functions and methods to assess the quality and reliability of gathered data. In this paper, we reflect about the last point, presenting recent reflections on the wearable environment notion. An architecture for the reliable acquisition of data in the IoT context is proposed, together with first experiments conducted to evaluate its effectiveness in improving the quality of data elaborated by applications.

- Abstract
Background: Tocilizumab blocks pro-inflammatory activity of interleukin-6 (IL-6), involved in pathogenesis of pneumonia the most frequent cause of death in COVID-19 patients. Methods: A multicenter, single-arm, hypothesis-driven trial was planned, according to a phase 2 design, to study the effect of tocilizumab on lethality rates at 14 and 30 days (co-primary endpoints, a priori expected rates being 20 and 35%, respectively). A further prospective cohort of patients, consecutively enrolled after the first cohort was accomplished, was used as a secondary validation dataset. The two cohorts were evaluated jointly in an exploratory multivariable logistic regression model to assess prognostic variables on survival. Results: In the primary intention-to-treat (ITT) phase 2 population, 180/301 (59.8%) subjects received tocilizumab, and 67 deaths were observed overall. Lethality rates were equal to 18.4% (97.5% CI: 13.6-24.0, P = 0.52) and 22.4% (97.5% CI: 17.2-28.3, P < 0.001) at 14 and 30 days, respectively. Lethality rates were lower in the validation dataset, that included 920 patients. No signal of specific drug toxicity was reported. In the exploratory multivariable logistic regression analysis, older age and lower PaO2/FiO2 ratio negatively affected survival, while the concurrent use of steroids was associated with greater survival. A statistically significant interaction was found between tocilizumab and respiratory support, suggesting that tocilizumab might be more effective in patients not requiring mechanical respiratory support at baseline. Conclusions: Tocilizumab reduced lethality rate at 30 days compared with null hypothesis, without significant toxicity. Possibly, this effect could be limited to patients not requiring mechanical respiratory support at baseline. Registration EudraCT (2020-001110-38); clinicaltrials.gov (NCT04317092).

29. Design and Development of Network Monitoring Strategies in P4-enabled Programmable Switches

- Abstract
Network monitoring is of paramount importance for effective network management: it allows to constantly observe a network's behavior to ensure it is working as intended, and can trigger both automated and manual remediation procedures in case of failures and anomalies. Software-Defined Networking (SDN) decouples the control plane of network infrastructure from its data plane to perform centralized control on the multiple switches in a network. In this context, the responsibility of switches is only to forward packets according to the instructions provided by a controller. The lack of programmability in the data plane of SDNs prompted the advent of data-plane programmable switches, which allow developers to customize the data-plane pipeline (e.g. match-action tables) by using a domain specific language named P4, and implement novel programs and protocols operating at wire speed directly in the switches. This unlocks the possibility to offload some monitoring tasks to the programmable data plane, and to perform fine-grained monitoring at very high packet processing speeds. Given the central importance of this topic, the principal goal of this thesis is to enable a wide range of monitoring tasks in data-plane programmable switches, with a focus on the ones equipped with programmable Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs). To achieve this goal, this thesis makes three main contributions: (i.) We enhance P4-supported data plane programmability for network monitoring; (ii.) We design and develop several network monitoring tasks in programmable data planes; (iii.) We combine multiple tasks in a single commodity switch to collect various metrics for different monitoring purposes. Our evaluations show that our solutions can be exploited by network administrators, operators and security engineers to better track and understand the current network status, and thus prevent infrastructure and service failures.

30. Resilience of Delay-sensitive Services with Transport-layer Monitoring in SD-WAN

Today, more and more enterprises are embarking on a digital transformation where most of their applications are hosted in the Cloud. As a result, a reliable Wide Area Network (WAN) has become a primary need to interconnect their distributed branch offices and data centers that accommodate those applications. Software-Defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN) represents the most promising technology solution for next-generation enterprise networks, being able to increase network agility and reduce costs. In this paper, we present an experimental SD-WAN solution capable of running and optimizing delay-sensitive high-priority services, such as real-time video streaming, while minimizing downtime caused by network failures. This solution comprises a monitoring and a traffic engineering system for SD-WAN. The first consists of a Transport-layer Passive Monitoring (TPM) system based on extended Berkeley Packet Filter (eBPF) technology with the goal of monitoring TCP flows; the second consists of an application, running inside the SD-WAN controller, with the goal of orchestrating the network traffic in consideration of the monitoring measurements by ensuring rapid recovery and resilience in case of unexpected congestion events. We validate our solution over two SD-WAN testbeds: the first is hosted in our laboratory at Politecnico di Milano, while the second is deployed in a municipal network of an Italian city. Results show that our SD-WAN solution can increase the overall service availability while meeting the stringent QoS requirements of delay-sensitive services. IEEE

31. Tracking Normalized Network Traffic Entropy to Detect DDoS Attacks in P4

Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks represent a persistent threat to modern telecommunications networks: detecting and counteracting them is still a crucial unresolved challenge for network operators. DDoS attack detection is usually carried out in one or more central nodes that collect significant amounts of monitoring data from networking devices, potentially creating issues related to network overload or delay in detection. The dawn of programmable data planes in Software-Defined Networks can help mitigate this issue, opening the door to the detection of DDoS attacks directly in the data plane of the switches. However, the most widely-adopted data plane programming language, namely P4, lacks supporting many arithmetic operations, therefore, some of the advanced network monitoring functionalities needed for DDoS detection cannot be straightforwardly implemented in P4. This work overcomes such a limitation and presents two novel strategies for flow cardinality and for normalized network traffic entropy estimation that only use P4-supported operations and guarantee a low relative error. Additionally, based on these contributions, we propose a DDoS detection strategy relying on variations of the normalized network traffic entropy. Results show that it has comparable or higher detection accuracy than state-of-the-art solutions, yet being simpler and entirely executed in the data plane.

Personalization is an important factor to increase the user experience (UX) and effectiveness of mHealth solutions. In this paper, we present an innovative approach to the personalization of mHealth apps. A profiling function has been developed based on the physical and psychological characteristics of users, with the final aim to cluster them acting as a guideline to the design and implementation of new functionalities to improve the overall acceptance degree of the app. A preliminary analysis case study has been proposed to evaluate the impact on user experience according to the state of the art to draw useful lessons for future works.

- Abstract
Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks represent a persistent threat to modern telecommunications networks: detecting and counteracting them is still a crucial unresolved challenge for network operators. DDoS attack detection is usually carried out in one or more central nodes that collect significant amounts of monitoring data from networking devices, potentially creating issues related to network overload or delay in detection. The dawn of programmable data planes in Software-Defined Networks can help mitigate this issue, opening the door to the detection of DDoS attacks directly in the data plane of the switches. However, the most widely-adopted data plane programming language, namely P4, lacks supporting many arithmetic operations, therefore, some of the advanced network monitoring functionalities needed for DDoS detection cannot be straightforwardly implemented in P4. This work overcomes such a limitation and presents two novel strategies for flow cardinality and for normalized network traffic entropy estimation that only use P4-supported operations and guarantee a low relative error. Additionally, based on these contributions, we propose a DDoS detection strategy relying on variations of the normalized network traffic entropy. Results show that it has comparable or higher detection accuracy than state-of-the-art solutions, yet being simpler and entirely executed in the data plane.

- Abstract
LoRa is a long-range and low-power radio technology largely employed in Internet of Things (IoT) scenarios. It defines the lower physical layer while other protocols, such as LoRaWAN, define the upper layers of the network. A LoRaWAN network assumes a star topology where each of the nodes communicates with multiple gateways which, in turn, forward the collected data to a network server. The main LoRaWAN characteristic is the central role of the gateways; however, in some application scenarios, a much lighter protocol stack, relying only on node capabilities and without the presence of gateways, can be more suitable. In this paper, we present a preliminary study for realizing a LoRa-based mesh network, not relying on LoRaWAN, that implements a peer-to-peer communication between nodes, without the use of gateways, and extends node reachability through multi-hop communication. To validate our investigations, we present a hardware/software prototype based on low-power-consumption devices, and we preliminarily assess the proposed solution.

40. INVEST: Flow-based Traffic Volume Estimation in Data-plane Programmable Networks

- Abstract
The emergence of programmable data planes in Software-Defined Networks enables the execution of various monitoring tasks directly in network devices, overcoming the need to deliver huge amounts of information to a controller that must then process it at scale. In this paper, we aim to solve a fundamental problem arising when exploiting programmable data planes for network-wide monitoring: how to estimate the overall number of packets in the network (i.e., the traffic volume), and the related number and size of flows, while avoiding packet double counting. Most existing works solve this problem by ensuring that each packet is counted only once on its path, which limits routing or requires coordination among devices. We propose a different approach, INVEST, a flow-based traffic volume estimator for P4-based switches, that relies on and can reuse commonly employed data structures while naturally solving the double-counting problem. We theoretically analyze and experimentally evaluate our solution, which we implemented in a real P4 carrier-grade switch, finding that it is accurate, memory-efficient, and can process packets at line rate.

Volumetric distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks have become one of the most significant threats to modern telecommunication networks. However, most existing defense systems require that detection software operates from a centralized monitoring collector, leading to increased traffic load and delayed response. The recent advent of Data Plane Programmability (DPP) enables an alternative solution: threshold-based volumetric DDoS detection can be performed directly in programmable switches to skim only potentially hazardous traffic, to be analyzed in depth at the controller. In this paper, we first introduce the BACON data structure based on sketches, to estimate per-destination flow cardinality, and theoretically analyze it. Then we employ it in a simple in-network DDoS victim identification strategy, INDDoS, to detect the destination IPs for which the number of incoming connections exceeds a pre-defined threshold. We describe its hardware implementation on a Tofino-based programmable switch using the domain-specific P4 language, proving that some limitations imposed by real hardware to safeguard processing speed can be overcome to implement relatively complex packet manipulations. Finally, we present some experimental performance measurements, showing that our programmable switch is able to keep processing packets at line-rate while performing volumetric DDoS detection, and also achieves a high F1 score on DDoS victim identification.

- Abstract
This paper presents an enhanced hybrid Software-Defined Networking (SDN) layer-2 switch whose behavior is specified by the Programming Protocol-independent Packet Processors (P4) language. Its SDN capabilities are enabled by using P4Runtime as control plane protocol to specify the forwarding rules used by its programmable data plane. Additionally, the device is also able to exploit P4 registers for an autonomous self-definition of its forwarding capabilities, with the goal of avoiding an overload of the SDN control plane. Its performance is better than other P4 proposals based on non-standard externs and similar to other platform-dependent implementations.

- Abstract
Network Function Virtualization (NFV) provides higher flexibility for network operators and reduces the complexity in network service deployment. Using NFV, Virtual Network Functions (VNF) can be located in various network nodes and chained together in a Service Function Chain (SFC) to provide a specific service. Consolidating multiple VNFs in a smaller number of locations would allow decreasing capital expenditures. However, excessive consolidation of VNFs might cause additional latency penalties due to processing-resource sharing, and this is undesirable, as SFCs are bounded by service-specific latency requirements. In this paper, we identify two different types of penalties (referred as "costs") related to the processingresource sharing among multiple VNFs: the context switching costs and the upscaling costs. Context switching costs arise when multiple CPU processes (e.g., supporting different VNFs) share the same CPU and thus repeated loading/saving of their context is required. Upscaling costs are incurred by VNFs requiring multi-core implementations, since they suffer a penalty due to the load-balancing needs among CPU cores. These costs affect how the chained VNFs are placed in the network to meet the performance requirement of the SFCs. We evaluate their impact while considering SFCs with different bandwidth and latency requirements in a scenario of VNF consolidation.

The proposed switch architecture employs fixed-input/tunable-output wavelength converters (expected to be less complex than tunable-input/tunable-output ones). The space switching matrix is modular and simple with respect to switching architectures with different wavelength converters sharing schemes (i.e. shared-per-node architecture). A parallel scheduling algorithm is defined to control optical packet forwarding in a synchronous scenario as well as an analytical model to evaluate packet loss performance. The analytical model is validated against simulation and previous analysis and the results obtained show good accuracy in most cases of interest for optical switch design. The recent COVID-19 emergency has pointed out the importance of effective and efficient tools to support users in their day-by-day activities, ranging from health-related ones to studying, remote working and recreation. Indeed, wearables and modern network technologies, such as network slicing and SDWAN, play a key role in this scenario, but existing applications should be rethought to be really useful in critical situations like the current pandemic. In this paper, we reflect about this topic, trying to design an innovative architectural framework where Wearable Expert Systems, IoT and network infrastructures are integrated to obtain the best level of performance.

49. Deployment of Application Microservices in Multi-Domain Federated Fog Environments

- Abstract
In this paper we consider the problem of initial resource selection for a single-domain fog provider lacking sufficient resources for the complete deployment of a batch of IoT applications. To overcome resources shortage, it is possible to lease assets from other domains across a federation of cloud-fog infrastructures to meet the requirements of those applications: the fog provider seeks to minimise the number of external resources to be rented in order to successfully deploy the applications’ demands exceeding own infrastructure capacity. To this aim, we introduce a general framework for the deployment of applications across multiple domains of cloud-fog providers while guaranteeing resources locality constraints. The resource allocation problem is presented in the form of an integer linear program, and we provide a heuristic method that explores the resource assignment space in a breadth-first fashion. Extensive numerical results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed approach in terms of deployment cost and feasibility with respect to standard approaches adopted in the literature.

50. Estimating Logarithmic and Exponential Functions to Track Network Traffic Entropy in P4

- Abstract
The evaluation of network traffic entropy is very useful for management purposes, since it helps to keep track of changes in network flow distribution. Nowadays, network traffic entropy is usually estimated in centralized monitoring collectors, which require a significant amount of information to be retrieved from switches. The advent of programmable data planes in Software-Defined Networks helps mitigate this issue, opening the door to the possibility of estimating entropy directly in the switches’ data plane. Unfortunately, the most widelyadopted programming language used to program the data plane, called P4, lacks supporting many arithmetic operations such as logarithm and exponential function computation, which are necessary for entropy estimation. In this paper we propose two new algorithms, called P4Log and P4Exp, to fill this gap: these algorithms can estimate logarithms and exponential functions with a given precision by only using P4-supported arithmetic operations. Additionally, we leverage them to propose a novel strategy, called P4Entropy, to estimate traffic entropy entirely in the switch data plane. Results show that P4Entropy has comparable accuracy as an existing solution but without (i) constraining the number of packets in an observation interval and (ii) requiring the usage of TCAM, which is a scarce resource.
