5. Highly corrosion and wear-resistant NiW–SiC–CeO2composite coating

Abstract

ABSTRACTCrack-free and uniform NiW composite coatings filled with ceramic particles such as SiC and CeO2were deposited on brass substrates by applying direct current (DC) and a well-designed pulse reverse current waveforms (PRC). PRC coatings displayed the noblest corrosion potential and lowest current density compared to DC electrodeposited coatings. Among all PRC coatings, PRC–NiW–SiC–CeO2demonstrated the highest corrosion resistance and the lowest current density. It also seems that the addition of ceramic particles to the NiW matrix enhanced the wear resistance of the coatings and the lowest wear volume of about (14.119 × 103 µm3) and the friction coefficient of 0.25 was obtained due to the formation of the uniform, void-free and packed structures with high content of SiC and CeO2particles in the deposit.

Abstract

Due to the manufacturing and utilization of innovative electric devices which need energy storage systems using edge-cutting technologies as electrochemical capacitors in many areas including mobility, there is an increased demand for research and development on new materials for energy storage devices. In this research, a bimetallic sulfide as ZnCo2S4 with graphene oxide was identified and developed as electrode material for an electrochemical capacitor. Synthesis of ZnCo2S4 and ZnCo2S4@GO(1%) was elaborated by hydrothermal method. Characterization of materials was achieved using X-ray diffraction, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy, Cyclic Voltammetry, and galvanostatic charge-discharge analysis. From the result, it is observed that the specific capacitance of ZnCo2S4@GO(1%) is 1060 Fg-1 at the current density of 1 Ag-1 was greater compared with ZnCo2S4. ZnCo2S4@GO(1%) has a power density of 8500 W Kg-1 with an energy density of 43 Wh Kg-1. Due to the addition of GO the electrochemical performance was improved on ZnCo2S4. From the excellent result, it is observed that ZnCo2S4@GO(1%) is the right choice for the fabrication of energy storage devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Ba 0.5 Sr 0.5 Co 0.8 Fe 0.2 O 3-d (BSCF) is one of the most active cathode materials and shows significant hydration effect suggesting possible proton conductivity. In this study, the performance of BSCF cathode on a proton-conducting BaZr 0.1 Ce 0.7 Y 0.2 O 3-d (BZCY) electrolyte with silver and gold current collectors was determined. The electrochemical characteristics of the symmetrical and anode-supported cell with diluted silver electrode, silver current collector or gold current collector on BSCF electrode were compared. The significant result is that, although the diluted silver electrode itself shows poor operation stability, the silver current collector has strong electrocatalytic contribution to the BSCF cathode performance on the proton-conducting electrolyte, leading to higher cell performance than that with the gold current collector.

47. Exhaust Gas Composition of Lignin Reactions in Molten Carbonate Salt of Direct Carbon Fuel Cell Using FactSage

Abstract

The most studied molten carbonate-direct lignin fuel cell (MC-LFC) or molten carbonate-direct carbon fuel cell (MC-DCFC) prototypes are those which are fed by fossil fuel. Substituting these fossilized fuels in the MC-DCFC operation with lignin, which is a bio-based carbon, may make this system more efficient, clean, and sustainable. The manipulation module (Mixture) and the computational module (Equilib) of the FactSage package were used to simulate two systems that can represent the anodic compartment of a direct carbon fuel cell based on MC-DCFC. The first system includes lignin and a mixture of molten carbonate (Li2CO3-Na2CO3-Cs2CO3). The second system uses also lignin and a mixture of molten carbonate (Li2CO3-Na2CO3-Cs2CO3) and CO2 gas was also added. The results show the formation of mixed gases in the anodic compartment which are composed of H2, CO, CO2, CH4, and H2O. The relative concentration of each of the species of this mixed gas has an impact on the efficiency of the MC-DCFC. How the relative concentration of these gases in this electrolyte can impact the performance parameters of the MC-DCFC is systematically analyzed. If the operating conditions of the fuel cell are optimized to get a gas composition of mainly CO2 with low amounts of H2, CO, CH4, and H2O in the anode compartment of the MC-DCFC, this will help to improve the conversion efficiency of lignin fuel in the MC-DCFC.

Abstract

Nanosize carbon-supported Pt1-xCox (x = 0.2, 0.3, and 0.45) electrocatalysts were prepared by a chemical reduction method using sodium borohydride (NaBH4) as the reduction agent. Transmission electron microscopy examination showed uniform dispersion of Pt 1-xCox alloy catalysts on carbon matrix, with the particle size less than 10 nm. The electrochemical characteristics of Pt 1-xCox alloy catalysts were studied by cyclic voltammetry, linear sweep voltammetry, and chronoamperometric testing. The as-prepared Pt1-xCox alloy nanoparticles could be promising cathode catalysts for oxygen reduction in proton exchange membrane fuel cells with the feature of much reduced cost, but significantly increased catalytic activity. © 2010 Elsevier B.V.
