Plastic bags create large amounts of waste and cause lasting environmental problems when inappropriately discarded. In 2015, England introduced a mandatory five pence (US$0.06/€0.06) charge to customers for each single-use plastic bag taken from large stores. Combining a longitudinal survey (n=1,230), supermarket observations (n=3,762), and a longitudinal interview study (n=43), we investigated people’s behavioural and attitudinal responses to the charge. We show that all age, gender, and income groups in England substantially reduced their plastic bag usage within one month after the charge was introduced, with interviewees highlighting the ease of taking their own bags. Support for the bag charge also increased among all key demographic groups. Increased support for the plastic bag charge in turn predicted greater support for other charges to reduce plastic waste, suggesting a ‘policy spillover’ effect. Results indicate a broad and positive effect of the bag charge, which appears to have catalysed wider waste awareness among the British public. This may facilitate the introduction of other policies to eliminate avoidable single-use plastics and packaging.

É do conhecimento comum que o furto por carteirista é um tipo de crime que se encontra em ambiente urbano. Baseada em factores ambientais e psicossociais de representações espaciais de segurança/insegurança, previamente identificados, a presente investigação pretendeu explorar como este tipo de factores podem afectar as avaliações das pessoas, no que se refere ao risco de serem assaltadas por carteiristas. Neste sentido, foram considerados dois locais em Lisboa, diferindo principalmente nas suas características ambientais, físicas e sociais. Os resultados mostram que fortes ligações sociais num local podem reveler‑se muito importantes para a avaliação do risco de furto por carteirista, afastando e tornando menos importante as características ambientais físicas, enquanto que, nos locais de maior heterogeneidade social, onde as ligações sociais são fracas, o ambiente físico torna‑se consequentemente mais importante para as percepções de segurança. It is in common knowledge that pick‑pocketing is a type of crime encountered in urban environments. Based on previously identified environmental and psychosocial factors of spatial representations of security/insecurity, the current research aimed at exploring environmental factors that could affect people’s evaluations, as regards the risk of being pick‑pocketed. With this purpose, two sites in Lisbon differing mainly in their physical and social environmental features were considered. Results show that strong social bonds within a place may appear very important for evaluation of pick‑pocketing risk, putting aside and making less important physical layout, whereas in socially heterogeneous places, where social bonds are weaker, physical environment becomes consequently more important for perceptions of safety.

Cet article propose une réflexion théorique qui s’appuie sur une enquête exploratoire menée dans trois entreprises françaises: la SNCF (Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer), à La Poste (exploitant public, fournisseur des services postaux et bancaires) et aux Galeries Lafayette (grand magasin). Le but de l’article est de saisir le phénomène d’incivilité comme conséquence de la rupture du lien social entre différents groupes d’acteurs (employés, clients), dans une perspective psychosociale. Une définition de l’incivilité en termes d’interactions entre différents groupes sociaux est proposée. L’incivilité est analysée par la suite comme une conduite de distinction entre les groupes. On montre enfin comment le caractère de différenciation des espaces dans chaque entreprise est lié avec l'apparition des conduites d'incivilité. O presente artigo propõe uma reflexão teórica que se baseia num estudo exploratório conduzido em três empresas francesas: SNCF (Sociedade Nacional de Caminhos‑de‑Ferro), La Poste (empresa pública, fornecedora de serviços postais e bancários) e Galeries Lafayette (grandes armazéns). O objectivo deste artigo é mostrar que o fenómeno de comportamento não civilizado pode ser visto numa perspectiva psicossocial como uma consequência de ruptura de ligações sociais entre grupos (empregados, clientes). Nesse sentido, propõe‑se uma definição de comportamento não civilizado, em termos de interacções entre grupos sociais, e este tipo de comportamento é analisado como um fenómeno de distinção entre grupos sociais. Finalmente, mostra‑se como as características de diferenciação de espaços de cada empresa estão ligadas com a manifestação de comportamentos não civilizados. This article represents a theoretical analysis based on an exploratory study conducted in three French enterprises: SNCF (French national Railway), La Poste (Postal Service) and Galeries Lafayette (a Parisian department store). The aim of this article is to produce a psychosocial scope on the phenomenon of uncivil behaviour understood here as a consequence of a break of social links between employees and clients. A definition of incivility in terms of interactions between different social groups is proposed here. Then, incivility is analysed as a behaviour of social distinction. We attempt to demonstrate, finally, how the differentiation of spaces of each enterprise is related to uncivil behaviours.
