Granular materials are involved in most industrial and environmental processes, as well as many civil engineering applications. Although significant advances have been made in understanding the statics and dynamics of cohesionless grains over the past decades, most granular systems we encounter often display some adhesive forces between grains. The presence of cohesion has effects at distances substantially larger than the closest neighbors and consequently can greatly modify their overall behavior. While considerable progress has been made in understanding and describing cohesive granular systems through idealized numerical simulations, controlled experiments corroborating and expanding the wide range of behavior remain challenging to perform. In recent years, various experimental approaches have been developed to control inter-particle adhesion that now pave the way to further our understanding of cohesive granular flows. This article reviews different approaches for making particles sticky, controlling their relative stickiness, and thereby studying their granular and bulk mechanics. Some recent experimental studies relying on model cohesive grains are synthesized, and opportunities and perspectives in this field are discussed.

In the present study, we investigated the generation phase of laboratory-scale water waves induced by the impulsive motion of a rigid piston, whose maximum velocity $U$ and total stroke $L$ are independently varied, as well as the initial liquid depth $h$. By doing so, the influence of two dimensionless numbers is studied: the Froude number $\mathrm{Fr}_p=U/(gh)^{1/2}$, with $g$ the gravitational acceleration, and the relative stroke $\Lambda_p =L/h$ of the piston. During the constant acceleration phase of the vertical wall, a transient water bump forms and remains localised in the vicinity of the piston, for all investigated parameters. Experiments with a small relative acceleration $\gamma/g$, where $\gamma=U^2/L$, are well captured by a first-order potential flow theory established by \citet{1990_joo}, which provides a fair estimate of the overall free surface elevation and the maximum wave amplitude reached at the contact with the piston. For large Froude numbers, an unsteady hydraulic jump theory is proposed, which accurately predicts the time evolution of the wave amplitude at the contact with the piston throughout the generation phase. At the end of the formation process, the dimensionless volume of the bump evolves linearly with $\Lambda_p$ and the wave aspect ratio is found to be governed by the relative acceleration $\gamma/g$. As the piston begins its constant deceleration, the water bump evolves into a propagating wave and several regimes are then reported and mapped in a phase diagram in the ($\mathrm{Fr}_p$, $\Lambda_p$) plane. While the transition from waves to water jets is observed if the typical acceleration of the piston is close enough to the gravitational acceleration $g$, the wave regimes are found to be mainly selected by the relative piston stroke $\Lambda_p$ while the Froude number determines whether the generated wave breaks or not., Comment: 24 pages, 10 figures

Laboratory experiments and particle-resolved simulations are employed to investigate the settling dynamics of a pair of rigidly connected spherical particles of unequal size. They yield a detailed picture of the transient evolution and the terminal values of the aggregate's orientation angle and its settling and drift velocities as functions of the aspect ratio and the Galileo number $Ga$, which denotes the ratio of buoyancy and viscous forces acting on the aggregate. At low to moderate values of $Ga$, the aggregate's orientation and velocity converge to their terminal values monotonically, whereas for higher $Ga$-values the aggregate tends to undergo a more complex motion. If the aggregate assumes an asymmetric terminal orientation, it displays a nonzero terminal drift velocity. For diameter ratios much larger than one and small $Ga$, the terminal orientation of the aggregate becomes approximately vertical, whereas when $Ga$ is sufficiently large for flow separation to occur, the aggregate orients itself such that the smaller sphere is located at the separation line. Empirical scaling laws are obtained for the terminal settling velocity and orientation angle as functions of the aspect ratio and $Ga$ for diameter ratios from 1 to 4 and particle-to-fluid density ratios from 1.3 to 5. An analysis of the accompanying flow field shows the formation of vortical structures exhibiting complex topologies in the aggregate's wake, and it indicates the formation of a horizontal pressure gradient across the larger sphere, which represents the main reason for the emergence of the drift velocity.

Water usually contains dissolved gases, and because freezing is a purifying process these gases must be expelled for ice to form. Bubbles appear at the freezing front and are then trapped in ice, making pores. These pores come in a range of sizes from microns to millimeters and their shapes are peculiar; never spherical but elongated, and usually fore-aft asymmetric. We show that these remarkable shapes result of a delicate balance between freezing, capillarity, and mass diffusion. A non-linear ordinary differential equation suffices to describe the bubbles, which features two non-dimensional numbers representing the supersaturation and the freezing rate, and two additional parameters representing simultaneous freezing and nucleation treated as the initial condition. Our experiments provide us with a large variety of pictures of bubble shapes. We show that all of these bubbles have their rounded tip well described by an asymptotic regime of the differential equation, and that most bubbles can have their full shape quantitatively matched by a full solution. This method enables the measurement of the freezing conditions of ice samples, and the design of freeze-cast porous materials. Furthermore, the equation exhibits a bifurcation that explains why some bubbles grow indefinitely and make long cylindrical ``ice worms'', well known to glaciologists., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

The presence of interparticle cohesion can drastically change the behavior of granular materials. For instance, powders are challenging to handle, and one can make a sandcastle using wet grains. In this study, we report experimental results for columns of model cohesive grains collapsing under their own weight in air and spreading on a rough horizontal surface. The effects of two different sources of interparticle cohesion on two collapse geometries are compared and rationalized in a common framework. Grains are made cohesive by adding a small amount of water, such that they are in the pendular state, or by applying a polymer coating. The effects of cohesion are reported for a cylindrical column that spreads unconfined axisymmetrically and a confined rectangular column that flows in a single direction. A dimensionless number, comparing macroscopic cohesive strength to particle weight, is shown to capture the effects of cohesion on the final morphology. To this end, a characterization of the cohesive strength of the granular materials is obtained, independent of the physical source of cohesion at the particle scale. Such a framework allows for a common description of cohesive granular materials with different sources of cohesion.

We investigate the link between the geometric environment of particles, the local deformations of the solvent, and the bulk effective viscosity in non-Brownian suspensions. First, we discuss the caging of particles by their neighbors,and especially the caging of small particles by large ones in bidisperse suspensions.We develop a model that attributes an effective volume to particles depending on their environment, and yields the local deformations and effective viscosity. We compare this model to data from the literature, as well as to our own experiments with suspensions of non-Brownian polystyrene beads. Using dissolved polymers and their coil-stretch transition as strain probes, we measure the local deformation of the liquid and the effect of caging thereon. We obtain a linear relationship between the amplified local strain rate and the particle volume fraction, in which the critical volume fraction $\phi_\mathrm{c}$ appears as an effective volume of the particles; this relationship is found valid up into the dense regime., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

In this article, we investigate experimentally and numerically the time evolution of vortex rings generated by the translation of a rigid disk in a fluid initially at rest and submitted to an acceleration followed by a deceleration. The size of the disk and its motion in terms of stroke length and travel time are varied as control parameters. The start-up vortex ring created in the near wake of the disk is characterized experimentally by PIV, and the measurements agree quantitatively with axisymmetric numerical simulations performed with the Basilisk flow solver. The maximum radius and circulation of the annular vortex and its dynamics are shown to follow different power laws with the control parameters. The modeling adapted from Wedemeyer's two-dimensional theoretical calculations [E. Wedemeyer, Ausbildung eines Wirbelpaares an den Kanten einer Platte, Ingenieur-Archiv 30, (1961)] captures the observed scaling laws. Besides, after the disk stops, a secondary ``stopping" vortex ring is generated, which is shown to affect the motion of the main vortex ring.

The displacement of a suspension of particles by an immiscible fluid in a capillary tube or in a porous media is a canonical configuration that finds application in a large number of natural and industrial applications, including water purification, dispersion of colloids and microplastics, coating and functionalization of tubings. The influence of particles dispersed in the fluid on the interfacial dynamics and on the properties of the liquid film left behind remain poorly understood. Here, we study the deposition of a coating film on the walls of a capillary tube induced by the translation of a suspension plug pushed by air. We identify the different deposition regimes as a function of the translation speed of the plug, the particle size, and the volume fraction of the suspension. The thickness of the coating film is characterized, and we show that similarly to dip coating, three coating regimes, liquid only, heterogeneous, and thick films, are observed. We also show that, at first order, the thickness of films thicker than the particle diameter can be predicted using the effective viscosity of the suspension. Nevertheless, we also report that for large particles and concentrated suspensions, a shear-induced migration mechanism leads to local variations in volume fraction and modifies the deposited film thickness and composition.

We present a numerical method for the solution of interfacial growth governed by the Stefan model coupled with incompressible fluid flow. An algorithm is presented which takes special care to enforce sharp interfacial conditions on the temperature, the flow velocity and pressure, and the interfacial velocity. The approach utilizes level-set methods for sharp and implicit interface tracking, hybrid finite-difference/finite-volume discretizations on adaptive quadtree grids, and a pressure-free projection method for the solution of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The method is first verified with numerical convergence tests using a synthetic solution. Then, computational studies of ice formation on a cylinder in crossflow are performed and provide good quantitative agreement with existing experimental results, reproducing qualitative phenomena that have been observed in past experiments. Finally, we investigate the role of varying Reynolds and Stefan numbers on the emerging interface morphologies and provide new insights around the time evolution of local and average heat transfer at the interface.

The formation of gas bubbles in a liquid occurs in various engineering processes, such as during foam generation or agitation and mixing in bubbly flows. A challenge in describing the initial formation of a gas bubble is due to the singular behavior at pinch-off. Past experiments in Newtonian fluids have shown that the minimum neck radius follows a power-law evolution shortly before the break-up. The exponent of the power-law depends on the viscosity of the surrounding Newtonian liquid, and ranges from 0.5 for low viscosity to 1 for large viscosity. However, bubble formation in a viscoelastic polymer solution remains unclear, and in particular, if the evolution is still captured by a power-law and how the exponent varies with the polymer concentration. In this study, we use high-speed imaging to analyze the bubble pinch-off in solutions of polymers. We characterize the time evolution of the neck radius when varying the concentration and thus the characteristic relaxation time and describe the influence of viscoelasticity on the bubble pinch-off. Our results reveal that the presence of polymers does not influence the thinning until the latter stages, when their presence in sufficient concentration delays the pinch-off.

In this article, we present a predictive model for the amplitude of impulse waves generated by the collapse of a granular column into a water layer. The model, which combines the spreading dynamics of the grains and the wave hydrodynamics in shallow water, is successfully compared to a large dataset of laboratory experiments, and captures the influence of the initial parameters while giving an accurate prediction. Furthermore, the role played on the wave generation by two key dimensionless numbers, i.e., the global Froude number and the relative volume of the immersed deposit, is rationalized. These results provide a simplified, yet comprehensive, physical description of the generation of tsunami waves engendered by large-scale subaerial landslides, rockfalls, or cliff collapses in a shallow water.

Clogging can occur whenever a suspension of particles flows through a confined system. The formation of clogs is often correlated to a reduction in the cross-section of the channel. In this study, we consider the clogging by bridging, i.e., through the formation of a stable arch of particles at a constriction that hinders the transport of particles downstream of the clog. To characterize the role of the volume fraction of the suspension on the clogging dynamics, we study the flow of particulate suspensions through 3D-printed millifluidic devices. We systematically characterize the bridging of non-Brownian particles in a quasi-bidimensional system in which we directly visualize and track the particles as they flow and form arches at a constriction. We report the conditions for clogging by bridging when varying the constriction width to particle diameter ratio for different concentrations of the particles in suspension. We then discuss our results using a stochastic model to rationalize the influence of solid fraction on the probability of clogging. Understanding the mechanisms and conditions of clog formation is an important step for optimizing engineering design and developing more reliable dispensing systems.

The erosion and transport of particles by an impinging turbulent jet in air is observed in various situations, such as the cleaning of a surface or during the landing of a spacecraft. The presence of inter-particle cohesive forces modifies the erosion threshold, beyond which grains are transported. The cohesion also influences the resulting formation and shape of the crater. In this paper, we characterize the role of the cohesive forces on the erosion of a flat granular bed by an impinging normal turbulent jet in air. We perform experiments using a cohesion-controlled granular material to finely tune the cohesion between particles while keeping the other properties constant. We investigate the effects of the cohesion on the erosion threshold and show that the results can be rationalized by a cohesive Shields number that accounts for the inter-particles cohesion force. Despite the complex nature of a turbulent jet, we can provide a scaling law to correlate the jet erosion threshold, based on the outlet velocity at the nozzle, to a local cohesive Shields number. The presence of cohesion between the grains also modifies the shape of the resulting crater, the transport of grains, and the local erosion process.

In this study, we investigate the transition between the Newtonian and the viscoelastic regimes during the pinch-off of droplets of dilute polymer solutions and discuss its link to the coil-stretch transition. The detachment of a drop from a nozzle is associated with the formation of a liquid neck that causes the divergence of the local stress in a vanishingly small region. If the liquid is a polymer solution, this increasing stress progressively unwinds the polymer chains, up to a point where the resulting increase in the viscosity slows down drastically the thinning. This threshold to a viscoelastic behavior corresponds to a macroscopic strain rate $\dot{\varepsilon}_{\rm c}$. In the present study, we characterize the variations of $\dot{\varepsilon}_{\rm c}$ with respect to the polymer concentration and molar weight, to the solvent viscosity, and to the nozzle size, i.e., the weight of the drop. We provide empirical scaling laws for these variations. We also analyze the thinning dynamics at the transition and show that it follows a self-similar dynamics controlled by the time scale ${\dot{\varepsilon}_{\rm c}}^{-1}$. This characteristic time is different and always shorter than the relaxation time of the polymer.

Clogging is a common obstacle encountered during the transport of suspensions and represents a significant energy and material cost across applications, including water purification, irrigation, biopharmaceutical processing, and aquifer recharge. Pulsatile pressure-driven flows can help mitigate clogging when compared to steady flows. Here, we study experimentally the influence of the amplitude of pulsation $0.25\,P_0 \leq \delta P \leq 1.25\,P_0$, where $P_0$ is the mean pressure, and of the frequency of pulsation $10^{-3}\,{\rm Hz} \leq f \leq 10^{-1}\,{\rm Hz}$ on clog mitigation in a microfluidic array of parallel channels using a dilute suspension of colloidal particles. The array geometry is representative of a classical filter, with parallel pores that clog over time, yielding a filter cake that continues to grow and can interact with other pores. We combine flow rate measurements with direct visualizations at the pore scale to correlate the observed clogging dynamics with the changes in flow rate. We observe that all pulsatile amplitudes at $0.1$ Hz yield increased throughput compared to steady flows. The rearrangement of particles when subject to a dynamic shear environment can delay the clogging of a pore or even remove an existing clog. However, this benefit is drastically reduced at $10^{-2}$ Hz and disappears at $10^{-3}$ Hz as the pulsatile timescale becomes too large compared to the timescale associated with the clogging and the growth of the filter cakes in this system. The present study demonstrates that pulsatile flows are a promising method to delay clogging at both the pore and system scale.

Gravity-driven collapses involving large amounts of dense granular material, such as landslides, avalanches, or rockfalls, in a geophysical context, represent significant natural hazards. Understanding their complex dynamics is hence a key concern for risk assessment. In the present work, we report experiments on the collapse of quasi-two-dimensional dry granular columns under the effect of gravity, where both the velocity at which the grains are released and the aspect ratio of the column are varied to investigate the dynamics of the falling grains. At high release velocity, classical power laws for the final deposit are recovered, meaning those are representative of a free-fall like regime. For high enough aspect ratios, the top of the column undergoes an overall free-fall like motion. In addition, for all experiments, the falling grains also spread horizontally in a free-fall like motion, and the characteristic time of spreading is related to the horizontal extension reached by the deposit at all altitudes. At low release velocity, a quasi-static state is observed, with scaling laws for the final geometry identical to those of the viscous regime of granular-fluid flow. The velocity at which the grains are released governs the collapse dynamics. Between these two asymptotic regimes, the higher the release velocity, the smaller the impact on the collapse dynamics. The criterion $\overline{V} \geq 0.4\sqrt{gH_0}$, where $H_0$ is the initial height of the column, is found for the mean release velocity $\overline{V}$ not to influence the granular collapse.

Tsunami waves induced by landslides are a threat to human activities and safety along coastal areas. In this paper, we characterize experimentally the waves generated by the gravity-driven collapse of a dry granular column into water. Three nonlinear wave regimes are identified depending on the Froude number $\mathrm{Fr}_f$ based on the ratio of the velocity of the advancing granular front and the velocity of linear gravity waves in shallow water: transient bores for large $\mathrm{Fr}_f$, solitary waves for intermediate values of $\mathrm{Fr}_f$, and non-linear transition waves at small $\mathrm{Fr}_f$. The wave amplitude relative to the water depth increases with $\mathrm{Fr}_f$ in the three regimes but with different non-linear scalings, and the relative wavelength is an increasing or decreasing function of $\mathrm{Fr}_f$. Two of these wave regimes are rationalized by considering that the advancing granular front acts as a vertical piston pushing the water, while the last one is found to be a transition from shallow to deep water conditions. The present modeling contributes to a better understanding of the rich hydrodynamics of the generated waves, with coastal risk assessment as practical applications.

When a droplet is generated, the ligament connecting the drop to the nozzle thins down and eventually pinches off. Adding solid particles to the liquid phase leads to a more complex dynamic, notably by increasing the shear viscosity. Moreover, it introduces an additional length scale to the system, the diameter of the particles, which eventually becomes comparable to the diameter of the ligament. In this paper, we experimentally investigate the thinning and pinch-off of drops of suspensions with two different sizes of particles. We characterize the thinning for different particle size ratios and different proportions of small particles. Long before the pinch-off, the thinning rate is that of an equivalent liquid whose viscosity is that of the suspension. Later, when the ligament thickness approaches the size of the large particles, the thinning accelerates and leads to an early pinch-off. We explain how the bidisperse particle size distribution lowers the viscosity by making the packing more efficient, which speeds up the thinning. This result can be used to predict the dynamics of droplet formation with bidisperse suspensions.

The formation of drops of a complex fluid, for instance including dissolved polymers and/or solid particles, has practical implications in several industrial and biophysical processes. In this Letter, we experimentally investigate the generation of drops of a viscoelastic suspension, made of non-Brownian spherical particles dispersed in a dilute polymer solution. Using high-speed imaging, we characterize the different stages of the detachment. Our experiments show that the particles primarily affect the initial Newtonian necking by increasing the fluid viscosity. In the viscoelastic regime, particles do not affect the thinning until the onset of the blistering instability, which they accelerate. We find that the transition from one regime to another, which corresponds to the coil-stretch transition of the polymer chains, strongly depends on the particle content. Considering that the presence of rigid particles increase the deformation of the liquid phase, we propose an expression for the local strain rate in the suspension, which rationalizes our experimental results. The generation of mean flows is a long-standing issue in rotating fluids. Motivated by planetary objects, we consider here a rapidly rotating fluid-filled spheroid, which is subject to weak perturbations of either the boundary (e.g. tides) or the rotation vector (e.g. in direction by precession, or in magnitude by longitudinal librations). Using boundary-layer theory, we determine the mean zonal flows generated by nonlinear interactions within the viscous Ekman layer. These flows are of interest because they survive in the relevant planetary regime of both vanishing forcings and viscous effects. We extend the theory to take into account (i) the combination of spatial and temporal perturbations, providing new mechanically driven zonal flows (e.g. driven by latitudinal librations), and (ii) the spheroidal geometry relevant for planetary bodies. Wherever possible, our analytical predictions are validated with direct numerical simulations. The theoretical solutions are in good quantitative agreement with the simulations, with expected discrepancies (zonal jets) in the presence of inertial waves generated at the critical latitudes (as for precession). Moreover, we find that the mean zonal flows can be strongly affected in spheroids. An object withdrawn from a liquid bath is coated with a thin layer of liquid. Along with the liquid, impurities such as particles present in the bath can be transferred to the withdrawn substrate. Entrained particles locally modify the thickness of the film, hence altering the quality and properties of the coating. In this study, we show that it is possible to entrain the liquid alone and avoid contamination of the substrate, at sufficiently low withdrawal velocity in diluted suspensions. Using a model system consisting of a plate exiting a liquid bath, we observe that particles can remain trapped in the meniscus which exerts a resistive capillary force to the entrainment. We characterize different entrainment regimes as the withdrawal velocity increases: from a pure liquid film, to a liquid film containing clusters of particles, and eventually individual particles. This capillary filtration is an effective barrier against the contamination of substrates withdrawn from a polluted bath and finds application against biocontamination.

In this letter, we describe the capillary sorting of particles by size based on dip coating. A substrate withdrawn from a liquid bath entrains a coating whose thickness depends on the withdrawal speed and the liquid properties. If the coating material contains particles, they will only be entrained when the viscous force pulling them with the substrate overcomes the opposing capillary force at the deformable meniscus. This force threshold occurs at different liquid thicknesses for particles of different sizes. Here, we show that this difference can be used to separate small particles from a mixed suspension through capillary filtration. In a bidisperse suspension, we observe three distinct filtration regimes. At low capillary numbers, Ca, no particles are entrained in the liquid coating. At high Ca, all particle sizes are entrained. For a range of capillary numbers between these two extremes, only the smallest particles are entrained while the larger ones remain in the reservoir. We explain how this technique can be applied to polydisperse suspension. We also provide an estimate of the range of capillary number to separate particles of given sizes. The combination of this technique with the scalability and robustness of dip coating makes it a promising candidate for high-throughput separation or purification of industrial and biomedical suspensions.

The withdrawal of a liquid or the translation of a liquid slug in a capillary tube leads to the deposition of a thin film on the inner wall. When particles or contaminants are present in the liquid, they deposit and contaminate the tube if the liquid film is sufficiently thick. In this article, we experimentally investigate the condition under which particles are deposited during the air invasion in a capillary tube initially filled with a dilute suspension. We show that the entrainment of particles in the film is controlled by the ratio of the particle and the tube radii and the capillary number associated with the front velocity. We also develop a model which suggests optimal operating conditions to avoid contamination during withdrawal of a suspension. This deposition mechanism can also be leveraged in coating processes by controlling the deposition of particles on the inner walls of channels.

The fragmentation of liquid sheets produces a collection of droplets. The size distribution of the droplets has a considerable impact on the coating efficiency of sprays and the transport of contaminants. Although many processes commonly used particulate suspensions, the influence of the particles on the spreading dynamics of the sheet and its subsequent fragmentation has so far been considered negligible. In this paper, we consider experimentally a transient suspension sheet that expands radially. We characterize the influence of the particles on the dynamics of the liquid sheet and the fragmentation process. We highlight that the presence of particles modifies the thickness and reduces the stability of the liquid sheet. Our study suggests that particles can significantly modify the dynamics of liquid films through capillary effects, even for volume fractions much smaller than the maximum packing.

We consider the rearrangements of a vertical twodimensional granular packing induced by the withdrawal of an intruder. Here, we focus on the influence of the size of the intruder on the reorganization process. The long term evolution of the granular packing is investigated as well as the avalanche dynamics that characterize the short term rearrangements around the intruder. For small enough intruder, we observe the formation of arches that periodically destabilize and influence the reorganization dynamics of the two-dimensional packing through larger rearrangement events.

During the transport of colloidal suspensions in microchannels, the deposition of particles can lead to the formation of clogs, typically at constrictions. Once a clog is formed in a microchannel, advected particles form an aggregate upstream from the site of the blockage. This aggregate grows over time, which leads to a dramatic reduction of the flow rate. In this paper, we present a model that predicts the growth of the aggregate formed upon clogging of a microchannel. We develop an analytical description that captures the time evolution of the volume of the aggregate, as confirmed by experiments performed using a pressure-driven suspension flow in a microfluidic device. We show that the growth of the aggregate increases the hydraulic resistance in the channel and leads to a drop in the flow rate of the suspensions. We then derive a model for the growth of aggregates in multiple parallel microchannels where the clogging events are described using a stochastic approach. The aggregate growths in the different channels are coupled. Our work illustrates the critical influence of clogging events on the evolution of the flow rate in microchannels. The coupled dynamics of the aggregates described here for parallel channels is key to bridge clogging at the pore scale with macroscopic observations of the flow rate evolution at the filter scale.

Applying mechanical perturbations in a granular assembly may rearrange the configuration of the particles. However, the spatial propagation of an event is not related to the size of the external perturbation alone. Thus, the characteristic length scale of an event is not well defined. In this study, we trigger rearrangements by driving two intruders through a vertical two-dimensional packing of disks. The amplitude of the rearrangements of the granular assembly appearing around the two evolving intruders is related to their separating distances. We show that there exists a characteristic distance between intruders under which the dynamics of the grains above one intruder is influenced by the other. The size of the intruders has little effect on this characteristic length. Finally, we show that the correlation between the movements of the grains decreases with the distance away from the intruders over a larger length scale.

The resuspension and dispersion of particles occur in industrial fluid dynamic processes as well as environmental and geophysical situations. In this paper, we experimentally investigate the ability to fluidize a granular bed with a vertical gradient of temperature. Using laboratory experiments with a localized heat source, we observe a large entrainment of particles into the fluid volume beyond a threshold temperature. The buoyancy-driven fluidized bed then leads to the transport of solid particles through the generation of particle-laden plumes. We show that the destabilization process is driven by the thermal conductivity inside the granular bed and demonstrate that the threshold temperature depends on the thickness of the granular bed and the buoyancy number, i.e., the ratio of the stabilizing density contrast to the destabilizing thermal density contrast.

Wet granular aggregates are common precursors of construction materials, food, and health care products. The physical mechanisms involved in the mixing of dry grains with a wet substrate are not well understood and difficult to control. Here, we study experimentally the accretion of dry grains on a wet granular substrate by measuring the growth dynamics of the wet aggregate. We show that this aggregate is fully saturated and its cohesion is ensured by the capillary depression at the air-liquid interface. The growth dynamics is controlled by the liquid fraction at the surface of the aggregate and exhibits two regimes. In the viscous regime, the growth dynamics is limited by the capillary-driven flow of liquid through the granular packing to the surface of the aggregate. In the capture regime, the capture probability depends on the availability of the liquid at the saturated interface, which is controlled by the hydrostatic depression in the material. We propose a model that rationalizes our observations and captures both dynamics based on the evolution of the capture probability with the hydrostatic depression.

Various materials are made of long thin fibers that are randomly oriented to form a complex network in which drops of wetting liquid tend to accumulate at the nodes. The capillary force exerted by the liquid can bend flexible fibers, which in turn influences the morphology adopted by the liquid. In this paper, we investigate, the role of the fiber flexibility on the shape of a small volume of liquid on a pair of crossed flexible fibers, through a model situation. We characterize the liquid morphologies as we vary the volume of liquid, the angle between the fibers, and the length of the fibers. The drop morphologies previously reported for rigid crossed fibers, i.e., a drop, a column and a mixed morphology, are also observed on flexible crossed fibers with modified domains of existence. In addition, at small tilting angles between the fibers, a new behavior is observed: the fibers bend and collapse. Depending on the volume of liquid, a thin column with or without a drop is reported on the collapsed fibers. Our study suggests that the fiber flexibility adds a rich variety of behaviors that may be important for some applications.

Physical and chemical transformation processes in reactive granular media involve the reorganization of the structure. In this paper, we study experimentally the rearrangements of a two-dimensional (2D) granular packing undergoing a localized transformation. We track the position and evolution of all the disks that constitute the granular packing when either a large intruder shrinks in size or is pulled out of the granular structure. In the two situations the displacements at long time are similar to 2D quasistatic silo flows whereas the short-time dynamic is heterogeneous in both space and time. We observe an avalanchelike behavior with power-law distributed events uncorrelated in time. In addition, the instantaneous evolutions of the local solid fraction exhibit self-similar distributions. The averages and the standard deviations of the solid fraction variations can be rescaled, suggesting a single mechanism of rearrangement.
