The Sungun copper–molybdenum porphyry deposit is located in the north of Varzaghan, northwestern Iran. The Sungun quartz-monzonite is the oldest mineralized intrusive body in the region and was emplaced during the Early Miocene. Eight categories of the late and unmineralized dykes, which include quartz diorite, gabbrodiorite, diorite, dacite, microdiorite and lamprophyre (LAM), intrude the ore deposit. The main mineral phases in the dykes include plagioclase, amphibole and biotite, with minor quartz and apatite and secondary chlorite, epidote, muscovite and sericite. The composition of plagioclase in the quartz diorite dykes (DK1a, DK1b and DK1c) varies from albite-oligoclase to andesine and oligoclase to andesine; in the diorite, it varies from andesine to labradorite; in the LAM, from albite to oligoclase; and in the microdiorite (MDI), it occurs as albite. Amphibole compositions are consistent with classification as hornblende or calcic amphibole. Based on their AlIV value (less than 1.5), amphibole compositions are consistent with an active continental margin affinity. The average percentage of pistacite (Ps) in epidotes formed from alteration of plagioclase and ferromagnesian minerals is 27–23% and 25–30%, respectively. Thermobarometric studies based on amphibole and biotite indicate approximate dyke crystallization temperature of 850–750℃, pressure of 231–336 MPa and high fO2 (>nickel-nickel-oxide buffer). The range of mineral compositions in the postmineralization dyke suite is consistent with a genetic relationship with the subduction of the Neotethys oceanic crust beneath the continental crust of the northwest part of the Central Iranian Structural Zone. Despite the change from calc-alkaline to alkaline magmatism, the dykes are likely related to the late stages of magmatic activity in the subduction system that also generated the porphyry deposit.

Modern mineral exploration strategies should take into account nontraditional metallogenic models for a given geological environment. Here we document the first detailed study of a massive sulphide showing associated with the High Arctic Large Igneous Province (HALIP) and Sverdrup Basin and infact, only the second example of mineralization described from Axel Heiberg Island, Queen Elizabeth Islands, Canadian Arctic Archipelago. The Between Lake showing (western Axel Heiberg Island) is a small massive sulphide occurrence within scree/talus below a large ridge of gabbro. It was originally described by explorationists as an orthomagmatic sulphide occurrence hosted within a dioritic dyke. New petrographic and mineralogical analyses indicate that the showing consists predominantly of pyrrhotite with lesser pyrite, trace chalcopyrite, and rare sphalerite. No Ni- or Pb-bearing sulphide minerals were detected. Geochemically, the showing contains some Co and Cu, rare Zn, and generally very low Ni contents ( Key words: Sverdrup Basin, Axel Heiberg Island, Cretaceous, metallogeny, massive sulphides, SEM-MLA analyses, evaporite diapirs. Nous documentons la première étude détaillée d'un indice de sulfures massifs associé à la grande province ignée de l'Extrême Arctique ([much less than] High Arctic Large Igneous Province [much greater than] (HALIP)) du bassin de Sverdrup, le deuxième exemple de minéralisation décrite de l'île Axel Heiberg des îles de la Reine-Élisabeth de l'archipel Arctique du Canada. L'indice de Between Lake (ouest de l'île Axel Heiberg) est une petite venue de sulfures massifs entourée de talus d'éboulis sous une imposante crête de gabbro. Il a été décrit à l'origine par des géologues d'exploration comme étant une venue de sulfures orthomagmatiques dans undyke dediorite. De nouvelles analyses pétrographiques et minéralogiques indiquent que l'indice est principalement constitué de pyrrhotite avec de moindres quantités de pyrite, des traces de chalcopyrite et, rarement, de la sphalérite. Aucun S à Ni ou Pb n'a été détecté. New data and interpretations on geological relationships of igneous rocks at Mokka Fiord, Axel Heiberg Island, Nunavut, provide insight into the timing and nature of magmatism associated with the Sverdrup Basin and High Arctic Large Igneous Province (HALIP). Field relationships indicate that the igneous rocks, previously interpreted to be volcanic flows, are most likely an intrusive unit discordant to regional bedding. An intrusive origin helps resolve chronostratigraphic inconsistencies in previous work. The host rocks are palynologically constrained to be late Barremian to late Aptian in age and are interpreted to be Paterson Island or Walker Island member of the Isachsen Formation. If the igneous body is intrusive, it's previously reported Ar--Ar age (102.5 [+ or -] 2.6 Ma) is no longer in conflict with accepted stratigraphic interpretations and probably reflects the emplacement age of the intrusion. Lingering uncertainties in interpreting the normal and reverse magnetic polarities determined in the previous work remain, and both are considered viable. Although this uncertainty precludes definitive conclusions on the significance of paleomagnetic data at Mokka Fiord, examination of the stratigraphic, paleomagnetic, and geochronologic relationships there highlight potential for the study of excursions, or reversed magnetic polarity subchrons, in the Cretaceous Normal Superchron elsewhere in the HALIP.De nouvelles donnees et interpretations sur les relations geologiques de roches ignees dans le fjord Mokka (ile Axel Heiberg, Nunavut) fournissent de nouveaux renseignements sur la chronologie et la nature du magmatisme associe au bassin de Sverdrup et a la grande province ignee de l'Extreme Arctique (HALIP). Les relations de terrain indiquent que les roches ignees, interpretees precedemment comme etant des coulees volcaniques, constituent tres probablement une unite intrusive discordante par rapport au litage regional. Une origine intrusive aide a resoudre des incoherences chronostratigraphiques dans des travaux anterieurs. Il est determine, du point de vue palynologique, que les roches hotes sont d'age barremien tardif a aptien tardif et sont interpretees comme etant le membre de l'ile Paterson ou de l'ile Walker de la Formation d'Isachsen. Si le corps igne s'avere intrusif, son age Ar--Ar (102,5 [+ or -] 2,6 Ma) deja publie n'entre plus en conflit avec les interpretations stratigraphiques acceptees et reflete probablement l'age de mise en place de l'intrusion. Des incertitudes demeurent concernant l'interpretation des polarites magnetiques normales et inverses determinees dans les etudes anterieures, et les deux sont jugees viables. Si ces incertitudes empechent de tirer des conclusions definitives sur la signification de donnees paleomagnetiques au fjord Mokka, l'examen des relations stratigraphiques, paleomagnetiques et geochronologiques font ressortir un potentiel pour l'etude d'excursions, ou de sous-chrons de polarite magnetique inversee, dans le superchron normal du Cretace ailleurs dans l'HALIP.
