3. Optical and modal features of hemielliptic dielectric lenses

Abstract

Any dielectric lens has a finite closed boundary and therefore is, in fact, an open dielectric resonator capable of supporting resonant modes whose Q-factor depends of the lens parameters (size, shape, and material). The hemielliptic lens, that is an essential building block of many mm-wave and THz antennas, is not an exception: it supports the so-called halfbowtie (HBT) resonances that can strongly affect performance of such antennas. In this paper we illustrate the interplay between the optical and modal features in the electromagnetic behaviour of hemielliptic lenses and highlight the drastic influence of the HBT resonances on radiation characteristics of lens antennas. We also discuss the difficulties associated with accurate description of the resonant phenomena in compact-size hemielliptic lenses with conventional techniques and provide recommendations on how to minimize the parasitic impact of HBT resonances on the antenna performance., Comment: 5 pages 6 figures

4. Exact off-resonance near fields of small-size extended hemielliptic 2-D lenses illuminated by plane waves

Abstract

The near fields of small-size extended hemielliptic lenses made of rexolite and isotropic quartz and illuminated by E- and H-polarized plane waves are studied. Variations in the focal domain size, shape, and location are presented versus the angle of incidence of the incoming wave. The problem is solved numerically in a two-dimensional formulation. The accuracy of results is guaranteed by using a highly efficient numerical algorithm based on the combination of the Muller boundary integral equations, the method of analytical regularization, and the trigonometric Galerkin discretization scheme. The analysis fully accounts for the finite size of the lens as well as its curvature and thus can be considered as a reference solution for other electromagnetic solvers. Moreover, the trusted description of the focusing ability of a finite-size hemielliptic lens can be useful in the design of antenna receivers., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

5. Performance of hemielliptic dielectric lens antennas with optimal edge illumination

Abstract

The role of edge illumination in the performance of compact-size dielectric lens antennas (DLAs) is studied in accurate manner using a highly efficient algorithm based on the combination of the Muller boundary integral equations and the method of analytical regularization. The analysis accounts for the finite size of the lens and directive nature of the primary feed placed close to the center of the lens base. The problem is solved in a two-dimensional formulation for both E- and H-polarizations. It is found that away from internal resonances that spoil the radiation characteristics of DLAs made of dense materials, the edge illumination has primary importance. The proper choice of this parameter helps maximize DLA directivity, and its optimal value depends on the lens material and feed polarization. Abstract

We assess the accuracy and relevance of the numerical algorithms based on the principles of Geometrical Optics (GO) and Physical Optics (PO) in the analysis of reduced-size homogeneous dielectric lenses prone to behave as open resonators. As a benchmark solution, we use the Muller boundary integral equations discretized with trigonometric Galerkin scheme that has guaranteed and fast convergence as well as controllable accuracy. The lens cross-section is chosen typical for practical applications, namely an extended hemiellipse whose eccentricity satisfies the GO focusing condition. The analysis concerns homogeneous lenses made of rexolite, fused quartz, and silicon with the size varying between 3 and 20 wavelengths in free space. We consider the 2-D case with both E- and H-polarized plane waves under normal and oblique incidence, and compare characteristics of the near fields., Comment: 8 pages, 18 figures

Abstract

The objective of the paper is the assessment of the accuracy of a conventional FDTD code in the computation of the near and far-field scattering characteristics of a circular dielectric cylinder. We excite the cylinder with an electric or magnetic line current and demonstrate the failure of the two-dimensional FDTD algorithm to characterize accurately the emission rate and the field patterns near high-Q whispering-gallery-mode resonances. This is proven by comparison with the exact series solutions. The computational errors in the emission rate are then studied at the resonances still detectable with FDTD, i.e. having Q-factors up to 10^3., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

The objective of the paper is to assess the accuracy of a standard FDTD code in the analysis of the near and far-field characteristics of two-dimensional models of small-size dielectric lens antennas made of low or high-index materials and fed by the line sources. We consider extended hemielliptic lenses and use the Muller boundary integral equations method as a suitable reference solution. Inaccuracies of FDTD near so-called half-bowtie resonances are detected. Denser meshing reduces the error of FDTD only to a certain level determined by the type of absorbing boundary conditions used and other fine details of the code. Out of these resonances, FDTD code is demonstrated as capable of providing sufficient accuracy in the near and far-field analysis of small-size hemielliptic lenses typical for the mm-wave applications., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

Correlation between the lens extension size and the broadside directivity of a hemielliptic dielectric lens antenna (DLA) fed by a primary feed with variable radiation pattern is studied in accurate manner. The problem is considered in two-dimensional formulation and solved numerically using in-house software based on the Muller boundary integral equations. Our results highlight the key role of the edge taper which can be defined for DLAs similarly to the theory of reflector antennas. Abstract

The objective of the study is to assess the accuracy of a standard FDTD code in description of high-Q resonances such as whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) ones excited in circular dielectric resonators. To achieve the goal, we consider circular resonators excited by line currents and extract the data on FDTD accuracy from comparisons between the FDTD-solution and the exact one obtained by the Mie-series solutions. The near-field and far-field characteristics are studied for resonators of various sizes, made of quartz and silicon. Both E - and H - polarizations are considered. The computational error, i.e. a resonance frequency shift observed for the FDTD solution, is analyzed and compared for several WGMs having different Q-factors., Comment: 3 pages (including poster)

Abstract

International audience; This paper reports the application of higher symmetries to the design of a Reflecting Luneburg Lens (RLL) with broadband response. RLLs consist of two circular parallel plate waveguides (PPWs) vertically stacked. The bottom PPW is filled with an azimuthally symmetric graded index (GRIN) medium. Owing to this GRIN medium, the wave launched by a primary feed in the bottom PPW is collimated in the top one, so that a plane wave with a different propagation direction is generated for any azimuthal position of the source. In this work, the GRIN medium in the bottom PPW is implemented by higher symmetry unit-cells consisting of metallic inclusions. This type of unit-cell achieves the required effective refractive index profile with reduced frequency dispersion, thus increasing the operational bandwidth of the lens. The proposed architecture constitutes a low-profile beam-forming solution that also provides complete azimuthal scanning in a wide frequency range. Moreover, it remains completely metallic, thus benefitting from structural robustness and reduced losses.

Abstract

This paper proposes a new design methodology of arbitrarily shaped integrated lens antennas (ILAs). First, we describe the design principles and numerical techniques of the optimization iterative loop. The starting lens shape, deduced from a general synthesis method based on geometrical optics principles, is optimized so that the radiation pattern of the ILA complies with an arbitrary amplitude-shaped template. The optimization procedure is local and is based on a multidimensional conjugate gradient method. Then, the capabilities and potentialities of this approach are demonstrated numerically using two examples. In the first one, an ILA radiating a secant-squared beam in one principal plane and a flat-top beam in the orthogonal plane is designed for indoor communications in V-band. In the second example (Gaussian/flat-top beam), we show for the first time that the joint optimization of the feed together with the lens shape is a very promising design methodology. Finally, our design tools are validated experimentally in Q-band through the synthesis and optimization of a peculiar small shaped ILA (28 mm x 28 mm x 15 mm) fed by an aperture-coupled microstrip patch antenna. International audience; Une méthode innovante de conception d'antenne à résonateur de Fabry-Perot polarisée circulairement est présentée ici. La méthode proposée repose sur une analyse à base de fonctions de Green. Il est prouvé qu'un unique mode de type onde de fuite est suffisant pour générer la polarisation circulaire sur une large bande. Nos résultats montrent que le rapport axial ne varie pas avec la valeur maximale de directivité et une antenne présentant une bande passante en rapport axial de 23% est proposée, validant ainsi les outils numériques développés. L'approche présentée est particulièrement intéressante pour le développement d'antennes à faible gain, rayonnant un champ polarisé circulairement sur une large bande de fréquence.

44. Washing Durability of PDMS-Conductive Fabric Composite: Realizing Washable UHF RFID Tags

Abstract

In this letter, we present experimental investigations on washing durability of a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-conductive fabric composite to validate its applicability for the realization of flexible wearable antennas that can withstand multiple washing cycles. For this purpose, we designed an ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) radio frequency identification (RFID) passive tag antenna and fabricated several prototypes using such materials combination. Understanding the challenge of having a robust integration of a lumped electronic component (e.g., RFID IC) on a flexible antenna, a new way to improve the interconnection has also been investigated. The tag prototypes were subjected to recurrent machine-washing tests, and after each washing cycle, their performance was analyzed mainly in terms of the read range. The results reveal that, with a proper treatment on the antenna-IC fixture interconnection, the tag antennas developed with the PDMS-conductive fabric composite can maintain their performance very well, showing a minimum degradation in the read range after 15 cycles of washing.

Abstract

International audience; Several forthcoming wireless telecommunication systems will use electromagnetic frequencies at millimeter waves (MMWs), and technologies developed around the 60-GHz band will soon know a widespread distribution. Free nerve endings within the skin have been suggested to be the targets of MMW therapy which has been used in the former Soviet Union. So far, no studies have assessed the impact of MMW exposure on neuronal metabolism. Here, we investigated the effects of a 24-h MMW exposure at 60.4 GHz, with an incident power density (IPD) of 5 mW/cm2, on the dopaminergic turnover of NGF-treated PC12 cells. After MMW exposure, both intracellular and extracellular contents of dopamine (DA) and 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) were studied using high performance liquid chromatography. Impact of exposure on the dopamine transporter (DAT) expression was also assessed by immunocytochemistry. We analyzed the dopamine turnover by assessing the ratio of DOPAC to DA, and measuring DOPAC accumulation in the medium. Neither dopamine turnover nor DAT protein expression level were impacted by MMW exposure. However, extracellular accumulation of DOPAC was found to be slightly increased, but not significantly. This result was related to the thermal effect, and overall, no evidence of non-thermal effects of MMW exposure were observed on dopamine metabolism. © 2017 The Author.
