We use FLUENT to calculate the wind profile over barchans and transverse dunes. The form of the streamlines of flow separation at the lee side of the dunes is determined for a symmetric barchan dune in three dimensions, and for the height profile of a measured transverse dune field in the Len\c{c}\'ois Maranhenses., Comment: 6 pages including 5 figures. We present a model to describe the collective motion of barchan dunes in a field. Our model is able to reproduce the observation that a typical dune stays confined within a stripe. We also obtain some of the pattern structures which ressemble those observed from aerial photos which we do analyse and compare with the specific field of La\^ayounne., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures

We derive a phenomenological continuum saltation model for aeolian sand transport that can serve as an efficient tool for geomorphological applications. The coupled differential equations for the average density and velocity of sand in the saltation layer reproduce both known equilibrium relations for the sand flux and the time evolution of the sand flux as predicted by microscopic saltation models. The three phenomenological parameters of the model are a reference height for the grain-air interaction, an effective restitution coefficient for the grain-bed interaction, and a multiplication factor characterizing the chain reaction caused by the impacts leading to a typical time or length scale of the saturation transients. We determine the values of these parameters by comparing our model with wind tunnel measurements. Our main interest are out of equilibrium situations where saturation transients are important, for instance at phase boundaries (ground/sand) or under unsteady wind conditions. We point out that saturation transients are indispensable for a proper description of sand flux over structured terrain, by applying the model to the windward side of an isolated dune, thereby resolving recently reported discrepancies between field measurements and theoretical predictions., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

The basic properties of traffic flow are analyzed using a simple deterministic one dimensional "car following model" with continuous variables based on a model introduced by Nagel and Herrmann [Physica A 199 254--269 (1993)] including a few modifications. As a first case we investigate the creation and propagation of jams in a platoon generated by a slow leading vehicle. In a second case we look at a system with the size L, periodic boundary conditions and identical vehicles. The constitutive quantities in Mori's theory, the residual forces, are expanded in terms of time dependent correlation functions and products of operators at $t=0$, where it is assumed that the time derivatives of the observables are given by products of them. As a first consequence the Heisenberg dynamics of the observables are obtained as an expansion of the same type. The dynamic equations for correlation functions result to be selfconsistent nonlinear equations of the type known from mode-mode coupling approximations. The approach yields a neccessary condition for the validity of the presented equations. As a third consequence the static correlations can be calculated from fluctuation-dissipation theorems, if the observables obey a Lie algebra. For a simple spin model the convergence of the expansion is studied.
