Abstract

The viscoelastic and mechanical performance of sustainable raw materials on biodegradable matrices provide insights into how to develop and improve materials that contribute to the circular economy. Thus, we aim to evaluate the effect of conventional (acid or alkali) and dual (alkali/acid‐ultrasound) treatment on Agave fibers, as well as their rheological and micromechanical performance on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)‐based composites. TGA results indicate that the treatments promote the removal of moisture, waxes, pectin, hemicellulose, and lignin from the fibers to different extents. PVA matrix containing modified fibers exhibits low viscosity, flux index, and critical shear values, indicating a high interaction and dispersion of the filler in the matrix. Furthermore, tensile tests and theoretical predictions of micromechanics‐based finite element analysis show evidence that the modified fiber type provides a different stress transfer ratio (∑) than in the matrix, which changes Young's modulus values. The results indicate that Agave fibers modified by dual treatment are a useful filler to produce soft or stiff PVA composites when looking for potential applications in the mobility industry or other fields like the packaging. Abstract

This work studied the potential of centrifugal spinning for the production of fibrous materials based on poly(D,L‐lactic acid) (PDLLA) and poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) with hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (n‐Hap). The influence of n‐Hap concentration (5, 10, and 15 wt.%) and spinneret angular speed on the final fiber morphology were analyzed. Further experimental evaluations were implemented to determine the effect of n‐Hap on the thermal and mechanical performance. The optimum parameters that show a balance among high yield production of homogeneous fibers with the smallest fiber average diameter were found to be at 5 wt.% of n‐Hap processed at 7000 rpm for PDLLA, and 5, 10, and 15 wt.% of n‐Hap at 6000 rpm for PHB. The thermal stability, for both systems, was not significantly affected. The mechanical performance of PHB systems was improved with the addition of n‐Hap. Osteoblast cell viability tests depicted a favorable cell response on the PDLLA systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Introduction: One of the main issues in the medical field and clinical practice is the development of novel and effective treatments against infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria. One avenue that has been approached to develop effective antimicrobials is the use of silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs), since they have been found to exhibit an efficient and wide spectrum of antimicrobial properties. Among the main drawbacks of using Ag-NPs are their potential cytotoxicity against eukaryotic cells and the latent environmental toxicity of their synthesis methods. Therefore, diverse green synthesis methods, which involve the use of environmentally friendly plant extracts as reductive and capping agents, have become attractive to synthesize Ag-NPs that exhibit antimicrobial effects against resistant bacteria at concentrations below toxicity thresholds for eukaryotic cells. Purpose: In this study, we report a green one-pot synthesis method that uses Acacia rigidula extract as a reducing and capping agent, to produce Ag-NPs with applications as therapeutic agents to treat infections in vivo. Materials and methods: The Ag-NPs were characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM, selected area electron diffraction, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, ultraviolet–visible, and Fourier transform infrared. Results: We show that Ag-NPs are spherical with a narrow size distribution. The Ag-NPs show antimicrobial activities in vitro against Gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and a clinical multidrug-resistant strain of P. aeruginosa) and Gram-positive (Bacillus subtilis) bacteria. Moreover, antimicrobial effects of the Ag-NPs, against a resistant P. aeruginosa clinical strain, were tested in a murine skin infection model.
