8. Partially calibrated semi-generalized pose from hybrid point correspondences

Abstract

We study the problem of estimating the semi-generalized pose of a partially calibrated camera, i.e., the pose of a perspective camera with unknown focal length w.r.t. a generalized camera, from a hybrid set of 2D-2D and 2D-3D point correspondences. We study all possible camera configurations within the generalized camera system. To derive practical solvers to previously unsolved challenging configurations, we test different parameterizations as well as different solving strategies based on state-of-the-art methods for generating efficient polynomial solvers. We evaluate the three most promising solvers, i.e., the H51f solver with five 2D-2D correspondences and one 2D-3D match viewed by the same camera inside the generalized camera, the H32f solver with three 2D-2D and two 2D-3D correspondences, and the H13f solver with one 2D-2D and three 2D-3D matches, on synthetic and real data. We show that in the presence of noise in the 3D points these solvers provide better estimates than the corresponding absolute pose solvers.

12. Visually Plausible Human-Object Interaction Capture from Wearable Sensors

Abstract

In everyday lives, humans naturally modify the surrounding environmentthrough interactions, e.g., moving a chair to sit on it. To reproduce suchinteractions in virtual spaces (e.g., metaverse), we need to be able to captureand model them, including changes in the scene geometry, ideally fromego-centric input alone (head camera and body-worn inertial sensors). This isan extremely hard problem, especially since the object/scene might not bevisible from the head camera (e.g., a human not looking at a chair whilesitting down, or not looking at the door handle while opening a door). In thispaper, we present HOPS, the first method to capture interactions such asdragging objects and opening doors from ego-centric data alone. Central to ourmethod is reasoning about human-object interactions, allowing to track objectseven when they are not visible from the head camera. HOPS localizes andregisters both the human and the dynamic object in a pre-scanned static scene.HOPS is an important first step towards advanced AR/VR applications based onimmersive virtual universes, and can provide human-centric training data toteach machines to interact with their surroundings. 16. Quantification of cerebral nicotinic α7 acetylcholine receptors (α7 nAChRs) under gastric stimulation of the vagus nerve in piglets

Abstract

Introduction Electrical gastric vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) shifts the sympathetic-vagal balance toward a parasympathetic predominance (1). We aim to assess central changes in α7 nAChR-mediated transmission and hypothesize that VNS changes the parasympathetic tone by changing the α7 nAChR availability in the nucleus tractus solitarii (NTS) and distinct cortical and subcortical regions (2). Material and Methods Following a standard 35-frames, 120-min protocol for dynamic brain PET imaging, data from eight piglets (15.6 ± 3.2 kg, ~6 weeks) were acquired post injection of 194.8 ± 9.4 MBq of [18F]DBT-10 (3) followed by T1-MPRAGE MRI: three baseline, two with infusion of the acetylcholine esterase inhibitor physostigmine (0.04 mg/kg, 1 ml/min, at 10 min prior to tracer injection; 0.24 mg/kg, 1 ml/min, at tracer injection/scan start over 120 min) and three with VNS in repeated sequences of 0.5 Hz over 5 min, 5 min pause started at scan start. TACs were analyzed using a 2-tissue compartment model involving a metabolite-corrected arterial input function to generate individual total distribution volumes (VT) as receptor parameter. Results Compared to baseline, we observed an increase of the mean VT after physostigmine infusion (61 %) as well as after VNS (28 %) without major alterations of K1 in the NTS (Figure 1 and 2). Conclusion These initial data indicate blood-flow-independent changes under VNS as compared with baseline suggesting an increase in α7 nAChR availability although the changes appear more heterogeneous in VNS as compared with physostigmine. The finding is in contrast to our hypothesis expecting lower α7 nAChR-availability as a result of increased acetylcholine release following VNS. We speculate that higher VT under VNS may reflect an increase in affinity of the α7 nAChR or result in an upregulation of the α7 nAChR. Increase of VT following physostigmine administration could be related to a positive allosteric effect on the α7 nAChR. Furthermore, the results of this study allow sample size estimations for further preclinical and clinical studies.

Abstract

In this paper, we propose the first minimal solutions for estimating the semi-generalized homography given a perspective and a generalized camera. The proposed solvers use five 2D-2D image point correspondences induced by a scene plane. One group of solvers assumes the perspective camera to be fully calibrated, while the other estimates the unknown focal length together with the absolute pose parameters. This setup is particularly important in structure-from-motion and visual localization pipelines, where a new camera is localized in each step with respect to a set of known cameras and 2D-3D correspondences might not be available. Thanks to a clever parametrization and the elimination ideal method, our solvers only need to solve a univariate polynomial of degree five or three, respectively a system of polynomial equations in two variables. All proposed solvers are stable and efficient as demonstrated by a number of synthetic and real-world experiments.

Abstract

Die Situation der Insekten in der Schweiz sei besorgniserregend, schreiben Forschende im ersten umfassenden Zustandsbericht «Insektenvielfalt in der Schweiz», publiziert vom Forum Biodiversität der Akademie der Naturwissenschaften Schweiz. Sie haben die verfügbaren Daten der Roten Listen, von Monitoringprogrammen und Studien analysiert. Demnach gingen Vielfalt und Grösse der Insektenbestände vor allem im Mittelland stark zurück, mittlerweile aber auch im Jura und in den Alpen. Um die teils dramatischen Entwicklungen zu stoppen, schlagen die Autorinnen und Autoren das wissenschaftlich basierte «12-Punkte-Programm Insekten» vor.

Abstract

Overexpression of monocarboxylate transporters (MCTs) has been shown for a variety of human cancers (e.g. colon, brain, breast, and kidney) and inhibition resulted in intracellular lactate accumulation, acidosis and cell death. Thus, MCTs are promising targets to investigate tumor cancer metabolism with positron emission tomography (PET). Here, the organ doses (OD) and the effective dose (ED) of the first 18F-labeled MCT1/MCT4 inhibitor were estimated in juvenile pigs. Whole-body dosimetry was performed in three piglets (age: ~6 weeks, weight: ~13-15 kg). The animals were anaesthetized and subjected to sequential PET/CT up to 5h after i.v. injection of 156 ± 54 MBq [18F]FACH. All relevant organs were defined by volumes of interest. Exponential curves were fitted to the time-activity data. Time and mass scales were adapted to the human order of magnitude and the ODs calculated using the ICRP 89 adult male phantom with OLINDA 2.1. The ED was calculated using tissue weighting factors as published in the ICRP103. The highest organ dose was received by the urinary bladder (62.6 ± 28.9 µSv/MBq), followed by the gall bladder(50.4 ± 37.5 µSv/MBq) and the pancreas (30.5 ± 27.3 µSv/MBq). The highest contribution to the ED was by the urinary bladder (2.5 ± 1.1 µSv/MBq) followed by the red marrow (1.7 ± 0.3 µSv/MBq) and the stomach (1.3 ± 0.4 µSv/MBq). According to this preclinical analysis,the ED to humans is 12.4 µSv/MBq when applying the ICRP103 tissue weighing factors. Taking into account that preclinical dosimetry underestimates the dose to humans by up to 40%, the conversion factor applied for estimation of the ED to humans would raise to 20.6 µSv/MBq. Resultantly, the ED to humans upon an i.v. application of ~300 MBq [18F]FACH would be about 6.2mSv. This risk assessment encourages to translate [18F]FACH to clinical study phases and to further investigate its potential as a clinical tool for cancer imaging with PET.

26. Joint species distribution models with species correlations and imperfect detection

Abstract

Spatiotemporal patterns in biological communities are typically driven by environmental factors and species interactions. Spatial data from communities are naturally described by stacking models for all species in the community. Two important considerations in such multispecies or joint species distribution models (JSDMs) are measurement errors and correlations between species. Up to now, virtually all JSDMs have included either one or the other, but not both features simultaneously, even though both measurement errors and species correlations may be essential for achieving unbiased inferences about the distribution of communities and species co-occurrence patterns. We developed two presence-absence JSDMs for modeling pairwise species correlations while accommodating imperfect detection: one using a latent variable and the other using a multivariate probit approach. We conducted three simulation studies to assess the performance of our new models and to compare them to earlier latent variable JSDMs that did not consider imperfect detection. We illustrate our models with a large Atlas data set of 62 passerine bird species in Switzerland. Under a wide range of conditions, our new latent variable JSDM with imperfect detection and species correlations yielded estimates with little or no bias for occupancy, occupancy regression coefficients, and the species correlation matrix. In contrast, with the multivariate probit model we saw convergence issues with large data sets (many species and sites) resulting in very long run times and larger errors. A latent variable model that ignores imperfect detection produced correlation estimates that were consistently negatively biased, that is, underestimated. We found that the number of latent variables required to represent the species correlation matrix adequately may be much greater than previously suggested, namely around n/2, where n is community size. Abstract

Robots are increasingly present in modern industry and also in everyday life. Their applications range from health-related situations, for assistance to elderly people or in surgical operations, to automatic and driver-less vehicles (on wheels or flying) or for driving assistance. Recently, an interest towards robotics applied in agriculture and gardening has arisen, with applications to automatic seeding and cropping or to plant disease control, etc. Autonomous lawn mowers are succesful market applications of gardening robotics. In this paper, we present a novel robot that is developed within the TrimBot2020 project, funded by the EU H2020 program. 31. Response of arthropod species richness and functional groups to urban habitat structure and management

Abstract

Urban areas are a particular landscape matrix characterized by a fine-grained spatial arrangement of very diverse habitats (urban mosaic). We investigated arthropods to analyse biodiversity-habitat associations along five environmental gradients (age, impervious area, management, configuration, composition) in three Swiss cities (96 study sites). We considered total species richness and species richness within different functional groups (zoophagous, phytophagous, pollinator, low mobility, and high mobility species). Information theoretical model selection procedures were applied and predictions were calculated based on weighted models. Urban areas yielded on average 284 arthropod species (range: 169-361), with species richness correlating mostly with heterogeneity indices (configuration and composition). Species richness also increased with age of urban settlement, while enlarged proportions of impervious area and intensified habitat management was negatively correlated. Functional groups showed contrasted, specific responses to environmental variables. Overall, we found surprisingly little variation in species richness along the gradients, which is possibly due to the fine-grained spatial interlinkage of good (heterogeneous) and bad (sealed) habitats. The highly fragmented nature of urban areas may not represent a major obstacle for the arthropods currently existing in cities because they have probably been selected for tolerance to fragmentation and for high colonisation potential. Given that built areas are becoming denser, increasing spatial heterogeneity of the urban green offers potential for counteracting the detrimental effects of densification upon urban biodiversity. By quantifying the expected effects along environmental gradients, this study provides guidance for managers to set priorities when enhancing urban arthropod species richness

Abstract

International audience; We present switching experiments performed on pillar microcavities containing a collection of quantum dots (QDs). Switching events are probed using QD luminescence, after ultrafast optical injection of free carriers. We observe large switching amplitudes (by as much as 20 linewidths), as well as differential switching of the pillar modes under inhomogeneous pumping. Through transient coupling of QDs with a cavity mode, cavity switching is used for the first time to generate ultrashort (down to 4ps!) pulses of spontaneous emission. Beyond this application, cavity switching can be used more generally to control CQED effects in the time domain.

Abstract

Ziel Bildbasierte Dosimetrie mittels präklinischer hybrider PET Systeme ermöglicht die Abschätzung der Strahlenexposition durch neue Radiopharmazeutika für die Anwendung am Menschen. Bisherige Untersuchungen beschränken sich auf Kombinationen mit CT. Zur Evaluierung eines neuen präklinischen PET/MRT-Systems stellen wir an Mäusen erhobene Daten mit an Ferkeln (PET/CT) erhobenen Daten und einer post mortem Aktivitätsverteilung in Organen (AV) an Mäusen, nach Injektion von [18F]Flubatine, gegenüber. Methodik Die Messung der kumulierten Organaktivität (OA) erfolgte an einem präklinischen PET/MRT (nanoScan®, Mediso) bzw. PET/CT (Biograph 16, Siemens). Es wurden 3 narkotisierte CD1 Mäuse (12 Wochen, 30g) bzw. 3 Ferkel (43 Tage, 14kg) bis zu 4 h nach i.v. Injektion von [18F]Flubatine dynamisch untersucht. Die Definition von Volumes of Interest erlaubte die Bestimmung der OA. Die AV von [18F]Flubatine in 27 CD1 Mäusen wurde mittels Sektion und Messung im γ-Counter bestimmt. Die Zeit-Aktivitäts Daten wurden auf die Verhältnisse im Menschen skaliert und durch exponentielle Anpassung dargestellt. Die Berechnung der Organdosis (OD) erfolgte mit OLINDA, die der effektiven Dosis (ED) nach ICRP 103. Ergebnisse Mit PET/MRT wurde die höchste OD (μSv/MBq) in den Nieren (47,5±2.0) und der Blase (33,4±0.06) berechnet, während der größte Beitrag zur ED (μSv/MBq) im Magen (1,8±0.1) sowie der Lunge (1,7±0.7) vorliegt. Die ED nach Injektion von [18F]Flubatine ist 12,1±0.7 und nahezu identisch mit dem Ergebnis der in vitro gewonnenen AV (12,5). Die ED beim Ferkelversuch mit PET/CT lag bei 14,3±0.7. Schlussfolgerungen Am Beispiel von [18F]Flubatine wurde gezeigt, dass es mit dem präklinischen PET/MRT-System möglich ist, eine Abschätzung der ED für den Menschen vorzunehmen. Die Untersuchung weiterer Radiotracer ist erforderlich, um diese Aussage zu erhärten. Die Studie bestätigt frühere Ergebnisse, nach denen die präklinische Inkorporationsdosimetrie die ED für den Menschen unterschätzt.

48. Preclinical Incorporation Dosimetry of (+)-[F-18]flubatine

Abstract

Ziel: (+)-[F-18]flubatine is a new tracer for neuroimaging of alpha4beta2 nAChRs with PET. To assess the radiation risk after intravenous application of the radioligand, the biodistribution, organ doses (OD) and the effective dose (ED) were assessed in pigs and compared to results based on data using the stereoisomere (-)-[F-18]flubatine. Methodik: Whole body dosimetry was performed in 3 female piglets (age: 43±1.2d, weight: 14±1.0kg) The animals were narcotized and sequentially PET-imaged up to 5h post i.v. injection of 183.5±9.0MBq (+)-[F-18]flubatine on a SIEMENS Biograph16 PET/CT-system with 7 bed positions (BP) per frame, 1.5 to 6 min/BP, CT-attenuation correction (AC) and iterative reconstruction. All relevant organs were defined by volumes of interest. Exponential curves were fitted to the time-activity-data (%ID/g, and %ID/organ). Time- and mass-scales were adapted to the human order of magnitude. The ODs were calculated using the adult male model with OLINDA. The ED was calculated using tissue weighting factors as published in the ICRP103. Ergebnisse: The highest OD was received by the urinary bladder (71.7±26.3µSv/MBq), the kidneys (45.1±6.5 µSv/MBq) and the brain (32.3±3.24µSv/MBq). The highest contribution to the ED was by the urinary bladder (2.9±1.1 µSv/MBq), the lungs (1.7±0.02µSv/MBq) and the red marrow (1.4±0.1µSv/MBq). According to this data, the ED to humans is 14.3±0.3 µSv/MBq. Schlussfolgerungen: The effective dose upon i.v. application of about 300 MBq (+)-[F-18]flubatine to humans would be 7.1 mSv, taking into account that preclinical dosimetry underestimates the dose to humans by up to 40%. This is well within the range of what is caused by other F18-labeled compounds to humans. This risk assessment encourages to transfer (+)-[F-18]flubatine from preclinical to clinical study phases and to further develop as a clinical tool for PET imaging of the brain.
