Abstract

Landslides in the Thompson River Valley, British Columbia, Canada, threaten the serviceability of two railway lines that connect Vancouver to the rest of Canada and the US. To minimise the impact of slope instability on vital transport infrastructure, as well as on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, public safety, communities, local heritage, and the economy, and to better inform decision making, there is a need for monitoring. Since 2013, the Ripley Landslide – a small, slow-moving, translational landslide – has been the focus of monitoring efforts in the Thompson River Valley transportation corridor. In November 2017, a novel Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) monitoring system was installed on the site, providing near-real-time data collection via a telemetric link. 4-Dimensional resistivity models are presented in the context of moisture content and soil suction, two parameters known to influence slope stability in the Thompson River Valley. Here, we discuss the development of laboratory-based petrophysical relationships that relate electrical resistivity to moisture content and soil suction directly, building on relationships developed in the field. The 4-D ERT models were calibrated using these petrophysical relationships to provide insights into the complex spatial and temporal variations in moisture content and soil suction. This study highlights the utility of geoelectrical monitoring for assessing slope stability in the context of moisture-driven landslides.

Abstract

The genus Holcophora Staudinger, 1871, is revised. Three species are described as new: Holcophora hispanica Gastón & Vives sp. n. (Spain), Holcophora rostrella Bidzilya & Sattler, sp. n. (Mongolia, Turkmenistan) and Holcophora centralasiae Bidzilya & Karsholt, sp. n. (Afghanistan, Pakistan). The genera Epimesophleps Rebel, 1907, syn. n., Spermanthrax Meyrick, 1936, syn. n., are synonymized with Holcophora Staudinger, 1871. Aponaea (sic.!) pruinosella Chrétien, 1915, syn. n. and Spermanthrax pycnostoma Meyrick, 1936, syn. n. are synonymized with Holcophora obtusipalpis Walsingham, 1905. Three new combinations are proposed: Holcophora molitor (Walsingham, 1906), comb. n., Holcophora symmocella (Rebel, 1907), comb. n. and Holcophora aphiridias (Meyrick, 1925), comb. n. Holcophora inderskella (Caradja, 1920) is re-described, as the re-description by ADAMSKI & SATTLER (2019) refers to H. rostrella Bidzilya & Sattler, sp. n. The male and female genitalia of H. molitor and H. symmocella are described for the first time. H. obtusipalpis is recorded for the first time from Spain (Canary Islands) and Egypt, H. inderskella from Turkmenistan and Tadzhikistan, and H. molitor from Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Iran.

Abstract

The Ripley Landslide is a small (0.04 km2), slow-moving landslide in the Thompson River Valley, British Columbia, that is threatening the serviceability of two national railway lines. Slope failures in this area are having negative impacts on railway infrastructure, terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, public safety, communities, local heritage and the economy. This is driving the need for monitoring at the site, and in recent years there has been a shift from traditional geotechnical surveys and visual inspections for monitoring infrastructure assets toward less invasive, lower cost, and less time-intensive methods, including geophysics. We describe the application of a novel electrical resistivity tomography system for monitoring the landslide. The system provides near-real time geoelectrical imaging, with results delivered remotely via a modem, avoiding the need for costly repeat field visits, and enabling near-real time interpretation of the four-dimensional electrical resistivity tomography data. Here, we present the results of the electrical resistivity tomography monitoring alongside field sensor-derived relationships between suction, resistivity, moisture content and continuous monitoring single-frequency Global Navigation Satellite System stations. Four-dimensional electrical resistivity tomography data allows us to monitor spatial and temporal changes in resistivity, and by extension, in moisture content and soil suction. The models reveal complex hydrogeological pathways, as well as considerable seasonal variation in the response of the subsurface to changing weather conditions, which cannot be predicted through interrogation of weather and sensor data alone, providing new insight into the subsurface processes active at the site of the Ripley Landslide. © 2020 The Authors. Abstract

As the knowledge base and importance of mitochondrial physiology to human health expands, the necessity for harmonizing the terminologyconcerning mitochondrial respiratory states and rates has become increasingly apparent. Thechemiosmotic theoryestablishes the mechanism of energy transformationandcoupling in oxidative phosphorylation. Theunifying concept of the protonmotive force providestheframeworkfordeveloping a consistent theoretical foundation ofmitochondrial physiology and bioenergetics.We followguidelines of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry(IUPAC)onterminology inphysical chemistry, extended by considerationsofopen systems and thermodynamicsof irreversible processes.Theconcept-driven constructive terminology incorporates the meaning of each quantity and alignsconcepts and symbols withthe nomenclature of classicalbioenergetics. We endeavour to provide a balanced view ofmitochondrial respiratory control and a critical discussion on reporting data of mitochondrial respiration in terms of metabolic flows and fluxes.Uniform standards for evaluation of respiratory states and rates will ultimatelycontribute to reproducibility between laboratories and thussupport the development of databases of mitochondrial respiratory function in species, tissues, and cells.Clarity of concept and consistency of nomenclature facilitate effective transdisciplinary communication, education, and ultimately further discovery.

Abstract

ZnS nanoparticles produced by chemical precipitation of Zn2+ with sulfur ions in aqueous solution were subjected to ultraviolet radiation. This revealed the detailed structure in the luminescence spectra. A doublet pattern found in the long wavelength region is due to the coexistence of the two crystalline forms in ZnS particles. The visible luminescent radiation at 590.1 nm is caused by Mn impurities. The dominant emission band at short wavelengths indicated a quadruple fine structure.

Abstract

Scanning tunnel microscopy was used to image freshly cleaved, highly oriented pyrolitic graphite at room temperature in ultrahigh vacuuum. Similar foldings of graphitic layers using the microscope tip were created after observing foldings and unfolding which took place spontaneously during scans. Results indicate that single atomic layers of graphite can deliberately be folded and unfolded and the technique could be used to produce novel carbon structures like spiral nanotubes.

Abstract

Scanning tunneling microscopy and atomic force microscopy are used to analyze the cluster-consolidated nanophase Pd and Ag surface structures to enable a better description of these nanophase structures. Narrow and deep crevice are observed in the consolidated cluster materials. High packing densities are obtained through the shape change during the consolidation process, where individual atoms form clusters.

36. The effect of music type in ketamine-assisted group therapy on treatment-resistant mental health conditions: a prospective observational study.

Abstract

Introduction: Currently, Ketamine is the only safe, effective, and widely used psychedelic-like medicine in Canada. It has demonstrated notably efficacy in providing relief to those experiencing treatment resistant mental health conditions. Pairing Ketamine treatment with psychotherapy, known as Ketamine Assisted Therapy (KAT), has been shown to yield more enduring outcomes. Work by Greenway et al. has demonstrated that playing music following ketamine administration for patients with bipolar disorder can help the patient feel more in control and reduce discomfort (Greenway et al. International Clinical Psychopharmacology 2021; 36 218-220). Objectives: The primary objective is to evaluate and compare the subjective clinical efficacy of two different types of music during ketamine-assisted group therapy. This will be explored through various validated psychiatric questionnaires, including the PHQ-9, GAD-7, and PCL-5. The secondary objective is to compare the objective changes in brain activity between the two music types. This will be evaluated using EEG data collected from MUSE headband before and after each ketamine-assisted therapy session. Methods: This study is a crossover trial of 32 participants undergoing ketamine-assisted therapy for treatment-resistant mental health conditions. Half of participants will undergo a KAT session with a "weightless" music playlist followed by a session with a "grounding" music playlist. The other half will do the same, in reverse order. All participants will complete several psychiatric questionnaires within 7 days of each session over email. Before and after each session, participants will play a simple game to test executive function while wearing a headband to measure EEG activity. Results: The absolute and relative changes to the scores of the questionnaires will be examined between participants and music conditions. The change in brain activity from pre-session to post-session will be compared between the different music conditions as well. As this is a crossover trial, any changes in outcomes due to order effects will be controlled for. Relevant demographic and medical factors will also be controlled for. Conclusions: To date, no studies have explored the influence that different types of music have on patients experience with KAT in a group therapy setting. Clarity of concept and consistency of nomenclature are key trademarks of a research field. These trademarks facilitate effective transdisciplinary communication, education, and ultimately further discovery. Peter Mitchell’s chemiosmotic theory establishes the link between vectorial and scalar energy transformation and coupling in oxidative phosphorylation. The unifying concept of the protonmotive force provides the framework for developing a consistent theory and nomenclature for mitochondrial physiology and bioenergetics. Herein, we follow IUPAC guidelines on general terms of physical chemistry, extended by considerations on open systems and irreversible thermodynamics. We align the nomenclature and symbols of classical bioenergetics with a concept-driven constructive terminology to express the meaning of each quantity clearly and consistently. In this position statement, in the frame of COST Action MitoEAGLE, we endeavour to provide a balanced view on mitochondrial respiratory control and a critical discussion on reporting data of mitochondrial respiration in terms of metabolic flows and fluxes. Uniform standards for evaluation of respiratory states and rates will ultimately support the development of databases of mitochondrial respiratory function in species, tissues, and cells., We thank M. Abstract

Antispila treitschkiella (Fischer von Röslerstamm, 1843) and A. petryi Martini, 1899, sp. rev. were regarded as synonymous since 1978, but are shown to be two clearly separated species with different hostplants, life histories, DNA barcodes and morphology. Antispila treitschkiella feeds on Cornus mas L., is bivoltine, and has, by following its ornamentally planted host, greatly expanded its range in north-western Europe. In contrast A. petryi feeds on the widespread native C. sanguinea L., is univoltine, and is one of only two Antispila species previously resident in the British Isles, the Netherlands and northern Europe. Consequently, the increase in abundance of A. treitschkiella in the Netherlands since the early 1990s and in Great Britain in recent years must be regarded as part of a recent expansion into north-western Europe, whereas the native A. petryi is hardly expanding and less abundant. In Britain, detailed surveys of parks and living collections confirmed the monophagy of these two species. A search of British herbarium samples provided no evidence for an earlier date of establishment. Information on recognition of all stages, including DNA barcodes, and distribution is provided, and these two species are compared with the third European Cornus L. leafminer, A. metallella (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775).
