Taste dysfunction is not rare in chronic pain patients. In the treatment of chronic pain, we employ multidisciplinary interventions such as pharmacological treatment, relaxation techniques such as autogenic training and biofeedback training (BFT), and soft massage for home practice. We noted that complex symptoms of the eyes, ears, tongue and nose improved on treatment for chronic pain. It seemed that relaxation training on tongue-related muscles improved the capacity to taste sweetness. This study was performed to examine whether muscle relaxation had any subjective or physiological effects on taste dysfunction.

Monoclonal antibodies (TB1 & TB2), which were obtained by immunization of 24 amino acids in BALB/c mice, bound specifically to the amyloid senile plaque and amyloid-angiopathic lesions of brain tissues of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) or with senile dementia of Alzheimer type (SDAT), and strongly reacted with the 1st part (Asp-Ala-Glu-Phe-Arg-His-Asp) of beta-protein. Western blotting and two-dimensional immunoelectrophoresis of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum revealed bands of 125 and 20 kilodaltons. The positive frequency of 125 and 20 KD bands detected by two-dimensional immunoelectrophoresis was higher in the serum of AD and SDAT patients (12 cases) than in that of normal control patients. ELISA employing various anti-amyloid precursor protein (APP) antibodies was performed using the extract of the human neuroblastoma cell line (NB39) which produces APP. In the near future, we hope to measure APP in CSF and sera from patients with Alzheimer's disease.

Present condition and activities of Jeddah Endoscopy Center managed in cooperation with Saudian and Japanese doctors are reported. Total number of patients examined are 1,183 cases; 73% of which were subjected to endoscopy and 27% were to fluoroscopy. With respect to the stomach diseases, gastric cancer and ulcer were found in 16% and 14.7%, respectively. On the other hand, high incidences of severe atrophic gastritis and haemorrhagic or erosive gastritis accounted totally 64.7% of all stomach diseases were noted. Out of 264 cases of duodenal diseases, duodenal ulcer was diagnosed in number of 202 cases (76%). The ratio between gastric and duodenal ulcer was, therefore, approximately 1:6. It was further noted that most of patients with esophagus cancer were found in males having the local habit of taking green tobacco. From the results obtained, discussions were made on the statistical differences of gastrointestinal diseases between Saudi Arabia and Japan.

Circadian variations of blood gastrin levels at 4-hour intervals for 24 hours were studied in patients with peptic ulcer and in healthy control subjects under non-stimulated conditions directly before each meal and during the night time. The variation patterns were classified into 4 groups; Type A which showed little variation of blood gastrin levels during whole day and were divided into Type A-l having higher gastrin level and Type A-2 having lower gastrin level, Type B which showed a single peak value during the day-time, Type C which showed two or more peak values within the whole day, and the group of unclassifiable patterns. These patterns were found to be correlated with the disease states of gastric and duodenal ulcers, especially with gastric acid secretory function. Discussions were made on the circadian variation patterns of the blood gastrin levels in connection with some other pathological physiological results obtained during the studies.

A 23 year-old male who had a past history of recurrent infection, was admitted to our hospital with the complaint of general malaise and fever. Laboratory examination revealed IgG 430mg/dl, IgA 62ml/dl and IgM 43mg/dl with hypertransaminasenemia, in conjunction with HBs-Ag (+) and HBe-Ag (+). Liver biopsy specimen showed a lobular massive necrosis with proliferation of the small biliary ducts and with slight lymphocytosis and plasmacytosis.Immunological examination with peripheral lymphocytes revealed the decrease of the immunoglobulin-secreting cells detected by plaque-forming-cell assay and marked reduction of OKT 4 (+) cells and of surface immunoglobulin bearing cells. In vitro culture of the unfractionted peripheral lymphocytes from this patient in the presence of pokeweed mitogen (PWM) showed a decreased immunoglobulin production when compared with the normal control. In addition, In vitro co-culture of B cells of this patient and T cells of the control in the presence of PWM revealed the decreased production of immunoglobulin, suggesting the impared function of B cells of this patient, in addition to the reduced number of B cells. In the same type of experiments, the helper function of T cells of this patient to In vitro Immunoglobulin synthesis, was found to be impared.Some discussions have been made concerning the hypo γ-globulinemia in cojunction with severe liver disease and the lymphocyte dysfunction of this patient.

疾病や老化現象等の諸相を,身体的側面と心理的側面の相互関係から究明する目的をもつて研究を進めた.本論文においては,今後の疾病単位の研究基礎となる総括的対照知見を得るために,年令要因を基本にした分析を行なうべく,加令に伴なう諸因子の変動を心身相関的に検討した.とくに,老年期における器質機能変化は,自然的に発生する生理条件の片よりともみれるが,その場合の心理的動向・特性を, Taylor-MASおよびRorschach testにより分析して,器質的・機能的老化指標の推移に照合した.その結果,老年者の心理特性は暦年令による区分成績よりも,形態的・機能的変化の推移によく平行し,とくに,老化現象の進展度を判断する上には,心理分析結果を基礎とする意義が極めて大きいことを明らかにした.
