Purpose: No previous report has compared the differences in postoperative functional outcomes between posterior cruciate ligament (PCL)-retaining (CR-) and PCL-sacrificing (CS-) total knee arthroplasty (TKA) with detailed intraoperative consideration of joint gap and balance. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the in vivo function of preserved PCL in TKA by comparing postoperative functional outcomes between CR- and CS-TKA with a cruciate-substituting insert (CS-insert), considering intraoperative influence factors, such as the posterior tibial slope, posterior condylar offset, joint gap, joint balance, and joint laxity. Methods: A total of 55 knees in 38 patients (27 knees from 18 patients in the CR group, and 28 knees from 20 patients in the CS group) were analyzed. Fluoroscopic evaluation under anesthesia in sagittal laxity, rollback amount, and the maximum flexion angles were compared between the groups. Results: There were no significant differences in intraoperative or postoperative all measurement values between the two groups, but the sagittal laxity was significantly smaller in the CR group [5.4% ± 4.5% (2.4 ± 2.1 mm)] than in the CS group [9.0 ± 3.8% (4.0 ± 1.7 mm)] (P ​< 0.01). There were no significant differences in the amount of rollback and postoperative maximum knee flexion angle between the groups. Conclusions: Preserved PCL in TKA with a CS-insert contributed to knee sagittal stability, but not to rollback and deep knee flexion.

Abstract Extensive air showers induced from high-energy cosmic rays provide a window into understanding the most energetic phenomena in the universe. We present a new method for observing these showers using the silicon imaging detector Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC). This method has the advantage of being able to measure individual secondary particles. When paired with a surface detector array, silicon imaging detectors like Subaru HSC will be useful for studying the properties of extensive air showers in detail. The following report outlines the first results of observing extensive air showers with Subaru HSC. The potential for reconstructing the incident direction of primary cosmic rays is demonstrated and possible interdisciplinary applications are discussed.

Virtual inertia (VI) control schemes implemented in inverter-based resources (IBRs) present a promising solution for mitigating the absence of inertial response in power systems after the decommissioning of synchronous generators (SGs). The interaction of multiple grid-following (GFL) and grid-forming (GFM) inverters with the power grid demands a thorough understanding, as different control mechanisms can lead to undesired interference that could severely impact the grid’s stability. Power hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) simulation is a verification technique that effectively bridges the gap between pure simulation and field demonstration. However, the topic of PHIL testing frameworks for multiple inverters equipped with VI control schemes has not been extensively addressed. To address this gap, this study presents a PHIL test framework that enables the verification of the performance and possible interference of multiple hardware inverters. The proposed framework enables the testing of inverters with different rated capacities and control mechanisms under equivalent capacity and control parameter conditions. This framework allows for the testing of various combinations of two inverters, from different manufacturers, to assess their performance and possible interference. The inverter prototypes from different manufacturers will be combined and tested with the proposed PHIL test framework to examine performance and potential interference for all combinations of the two inverters.

Eusocial insects such as termites, ants, bees, and wasps exhibit a reproductive division of labor. The developmental regulation of reproductive organ (ovaries and testes) is crucial for distinguishing between reproductive and sterile castes. The development of reproductive organ in insects is regulated by sex-determination pathways. The sex determination gene Doublesex (Dsx), encoding transcription factors, plays an important role in this pathway. Therefore, clarifying the function of Dsx in the developmental regulation of sexual traits is important to understand the social evolution of eusocial insects. However, no studies have reported the function of Dsx in hemimetabolous eusocial group termites. In this study, we searched for binding sites and candidate target genes of Dsx in species with available genome information as the first step in clarifying the function of Dsx in termites. First, we focused on the Reticulitermes speratus genome and identified 101 candidate target genes of Dsx. Using a similar method, we obtained 112, 39, and 76 candidate Dsx target genes in Reticulitermes lucifugus, Coptotermes formosanus, and Macrotermes natalensis, respectively. Second, we compared the candidate Dsx target genes between species and identified 37 common genes between R. speratus and R. lucifugus. These included several genes probably involved in spermatogenesis and longevity. However, only a few common target genes were identified between R. speratus and the other two species. Finally, Dsx dsRNA injection resulted in the differential expression of several target genes, including piwi-like protein and B-box type zinc finger protein ncl-1 in R. speratus. These results provide valuable resource data for future functional analyses of Dsx in termites.

Grid-forming inverters (GFMIs) are promising technologies that can replace some of the capabilities traditionally provided by synchronous generators (SGs), such as inertial response. While there have been many simulation-based studies on GFMIs, performance testing has not been adequately discussed. Power hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) simulation is an attractive option for testing GFMIs. The interaction between GFMI and power systems can be observed under a variety of conditions, including low-inertia and contingency conditions. Since PHIL testing was primarily used for grid-following inverters (GFLIs), the PHIL configuration needs to be adjusted to test GFMIs, which respond faster to changes in grid voltage than GFLIs. This paper proposes the PHIL setup for testing GFMIs. It utilizes the PHIL interface developed for testing GFLIs and adjusts it for testing GFMIs. The stability and accuracy of the PHIL testing are evaluated in terms of frequency stability in low-inertia power systems by comparing test and simulation results.

Developing advanced control functions for inverter-based resources (IBRs) to replace the inertial response of retiring synchronous generators (SGs) is progressing rapidly. Although various control mechanisms have been proposed for grid-following (GFL) inverters and grid-forming (GFM) inverters, the comprehensive comparison of their performance in contributing to grid stabilization based on hardware testings has not been studied well. This paper performs power hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) testing for multiple inverter prototypes from different manufacturers and compares their performance concerning the difference in inverter types, control methods, and IBR penetration conditions in the power system. It also tests the possible interference between islanding detection methods (IDMs) and frequency control capabilities of GFL and GFM inverters.

Due to the increasing burden on the traditional control systems, inverter-based resources (IBR) is required to take part in grid stability efforts. This is the key to increasing the share of IBRs in the power grid and ensuring that issues related to reduced inertia are handled properly. There have been some efforts towards developing frequency control for smart inverters such as frequency–watt​ mode. However, a fully functioning synthetic inertia mode combined with a smart inverter has not been developed yet. In this paper, a novel function is developed for implementing synthetic inertia in smart inverters as a combination of several control modes. Then, the operating curves of these control modes are varied to investigate their impact on the synthetic inertia’s performance and stability. These operations are tested both with lab equipment and controller hardware in the loop (CHIL) testing to study the accuracy of the latter. Once accuracy is established, further CHIL tests have been performed to investigate the interaction between the developed synthetic inertia function and other smart inverter functions such as Volt-Var Control. Results show that there is no negative impact on either of the functions and they can be safely activated simultaneously.

The increasing share of renewable energy-based resources in the power grid has a detrimental impact on the power system stability. As these resources are inverter-based, they decrease the overall inertia of the grid. To mitigate this problem, recent research focuses on developing novel techniques to provide synthetic inertia with inverters. In this fashion, inverter-based resources (IBR) can also contribute to power system inertia, hence, its stability. Some of the approaches for providing synthetic inertia are discussed in the standards. However, despite its potential, frequency-derivate-based (df/dt) solutions are not studied to adapt grid code in Japan. This paper addresses this need by developing a full df/dt control approach for IBRs. Several intricacies of this design is presented along with operation curves and system designs. Considering the special needs of the Japanese Electrical Grid, and the speed in which inertia support should be provided, a novel rate of change of frequency (RoCoF) measurement approach is also developed and presented. Lab tests are performed with hardware-in-the-loop tests and the results validate the operation and performance of both novel RoCoF measurement and df/dt control model.

Following the Pluto flyby of the New Horizons spacecraft, the mission provided a unique opportunity to explore the Kuiper Belt in situ. The possibility existed to fly by a Kuiper Belt object (KBO), as well as to observe additional objects at distances closer than are feasible from Earth-orbit facilities. However, at the time of launch no KBOs were known about that were accessible by the spacecraft. In this paper we present the results of 10 yr of observations and three uniquely dedicated efforts—two ground-based using the Subaru Suprime Camera, the Magellan MegaCam and IMACS Cameras, and one with the Hubble Space Telescope—to find such KBOs for study. In this paper we overview the search criteria and strategies employed in our work and detail the analysis efforts to locate and track faint objects in the Galactic plane. We also present a summary of all of the KBOs that were discovered as part of our efforts and how spacecraft targetability was assessed, including a detailed description of our astrometric analysis, which included development of an extensive secondary calibration network. Overall, these efforts resulted in the discovery of 85 KBOs, including 11 that became objects for distant observation by New Horizons and (486958) Arrokoth, which became the first post-Pluto flyby destination.

Grid-forming (GFM) inverters are promising technologies in future power systems. Although the voltage-source characteristic of the GFM inverter has been validated to enhance the stabilities in low-inertia power systems, modifying protective function mechanisms is needed from grid-following (GFL) inverters with the current-source characteristic. Therefore, the protective functions that coexist with grid stabilization capabilities in GFM inverters and their verification methods should be studied for practical deployment. This paper applies the existing Japanese conformance testing on prototypes of GFL and GFM inverters to reveal issues in the existing conformance testing framework, which was not designed to consider the voltage-source characteristics of GFM inverters. The test results identify the three main issues of GFM inverters in the existing test framework. The discussion based on the results will provide helpful knowledge to design future provisions on the functional requirements of GFM inverters and their verification methods.

We present the quasar luminosity function (LF) at z = 7, measured with 35 spectroscopically confirmed quasars at 6.55 < z < 7.15. The sample of 22 quasars from the Subaru High- z Exploration of Low-Luminosity Quasars (SHELLQs) project, combined with 13 brighter quasars in the literature, covers an unprecedentedly wide range of rest-frame ultraviolet magnitudes over −28 < M _1450 < −23. We found that the binned LF flattens significantly toward the faint end populated by the SHELLQs quasars. A maximum likelihood fit to a double power-law model has a break magnitude ${M}_{1450}^{* }=-{25.60}_{-0.30}^{+0.40}$ , a characteristic density ${{\rm{\Phi }}}^{* }={1.35}_{-0.30}^{+0.47}$ Gpc ^−3 mag ^−1 , and a bright-end slope $\beta =-{3.34}_{-0.57}^{+0.49}$ , when the faint-end slope is fixed to α = −1.2 as observed at z ≤ 6. The overall LF shape remains remarkably similar from z = 4 to 7, while the amplitude decreases substantially toward higher redshifts, with a clear indication of an accelerating decline at z ≥ 6. The estimated ionizing photon density, 10 ^48.2±0.1 s ^−1 Mpc ^−3 , is less than 1% of the critical rate to keep the intergalactic medium ionized at z = 7, and thus indicates that quasars are not a major contributor to cosmic reionization.

Abstract The sex determination gene doublesex (dsx) encodes a transcription factor with two domains, oligomerization domain 1 (OD1) and OD2, and is present throughout insects. Sex-specific Dsx splicing isoforms regulate the transcription of target genes and trigger sex differentiation in all Holometabola examined to date. However, in some hemimetabolous insects, dsx is not spliced sexually and its sequence is less conserved. Here, to elucidate evolutionary changes in dsx in domain organisation and regulation in termites, we searched genome and/or transcriptome databases for the dsx OD1 and OD2 in seven termite species and their sister group (Cryptocercus woodroaches). Molecular phylogenetic and synteny analyses identified OD1 sequences of termites and C. punctulatus that clustered with dsx of Holometabola and regarded them as dsx orthologues. The Cryptocercus dsx orthologue containing OD2 was spliced sexually, as previously shown in other insects. However, OD2 was not found in all termite dsx orthologues. These orthologues were encoded by a single exon in three termites for which genome information is available; they were not alternatively spliced but transcribed in a male-specific manner in two examined species. Evolution of dsx regulation from sex-specific splicing to male-specific transcription may have occurred at an early stage of social evolution in termites.

Abstract Elevated serum uric acid is a cardiovascular risk factor in patients with hypertension, even when blood pressure (BP) is well controlled. Xanthine oxidoreductase inhibitors (XORi) reduce serum uric acid levels and have several other potential effects. This multicenter, randomized, open‐label study compared the effects of two XORi, topiroxostat and febuxostat, on arterial stiffness, uric acid levels, and BP in hypertensive patients with hyperuricemia. The increase in inverter-based resources associated with the increased installation of PV sources is a concern because it reduces the inertia of the power system during peak PV generation periods. As a countermeasure to reduce grid inertia, the addition of pseudo-inertia using virtual synchronous machines can be selected, and PV generation can cooperatively contribute to the stable operation of the power system by using the suppressed output as reserve power. However, few studies have analyzed VSMs that do not use batteries and use PV as a resource (PV-VSM) in simulations, including grid interconnection and solar radiation fluctuations, and it is necessary to clarify the issues and discuss countermeasures. In this study, electromagnetic transient response analysis was applied to a VSM connected to a two-generator system, simulations were performed, and the following findings were reported and countermeasure methods for the problem were proposed. When the PV capacity is insufficient for the output required by the VSM inverter, the PV-VSM control system may become unstable. This is caused by a drop in the capacitor voltage of the DC/DC converter due to insufficient PV output. The limiter control system is designed to address this problem by combining the headroom estimation system with the current limiting algorithm. The proposed limiter control system is validated on solar radiation ramp fluctuations as a test case and found that the system was effective in supressing PV-VSM instability. In our simulation case, the PV-VSM with our limiter control can continue to operate stably even if the PV available power is 0.03 [p.u.] short of the inverter’s reference power by the solar power ramp fluctuation, as long as the inverter installation rate is less than 50%.

Virtual inertia control is a methodology to make inverter-based resources (IBR) behave like a synchronous machine. However, an IBR cannot fully emulate the response of synchronous machine because of its low-current capacity. When the inertial response of an IBR is affected by the current limitation, the synchronization of the synchronous machine simulated virtually inside the IBR controller with the other synchronous generators in the grid is affected, which may cause step-out of the simulated generator. We propose a methodology which can keep the synchronization by modifying internal induced voltage of the simulated generator to follow the system voltage change. The proposal is validated by the simulation using a nine-bus transmission system model including two synchronous generators and a large-scale IBR. The result of the generator trip simulation shows that the proposed method suppresses the phase angle variation while the current is limited, and avoids the instability regarding the synchronism. Furthermore, the impact of the current limitation on frequency stability is also evaluated through the simulation study and it is found that as the amount of output suppression increases, the frequency nadir falls, but the rate-of-change of frequency is hardly affected.

Inertia reduction due to inverter-based resource (IBR) penetration deteriorates power system stability, which can be addressed using virtual inertia (VI) control. There are two types of implementation methods for VI control: grid-following (GFL) and grid-forming (GFM). There is an apparent difference among them for the voltage regulation capability, because the GFM controls IBR to act as a voltage source and GFL controls it to act as a current source. The difference affects the performance of the VI control function, because stable voltage conditions help the inertial response to contribute to system stability. However, GFL can provide the voltage control function with reactive power controllability, and it can be activated simultaneously with the VI control function. This study analyzes the performance of GFL-type VI control with a voltage control function for frequency stability improvement. The results show that the voltage control function decreases the voltage variation caused by the fault, improving the responsivity of the VI function. In addition, it is found that the voltage control is effective in suppressing the power swing among synchronous generators. The clarification of the contribution of the voltage control function to the performance of the VI control is novelty of this paper.

BACKGROUNDS:Hypouricemia was reported as a risk factor for exercise-induced acute renal injury (EIAKI) and urinary stones. However, the prevalence of kidney diseases among hypouricemic subjects has not been evaluated. This study was conducted to clarify the prevalence of hypouricemia and the association of hypouricemia with kidney diseases by using a large-scale Japanese population data. METHODS:This study is a retrospective cross-sectional study at the Center for Preventive Medicine, St. Luke's International Hospital, Tokyo, Japan, and Sanin Rousai Hospital, Yonago, Japan. We analyzed the medical records of 90,143 Japanese subjects at the center in St. Luke's International Hospital, Tokyo, and 4,837 subjects in Sanin Rousai Hospital, Yonago, who underwent annual regular health check-up between January 2004 and June 2010. We defined hypouricemia as serum uric acid level of ≤2.0 mg/dL. We checked the medical history of all the study subjects and compared the rates of complications including urinary stones and kidney diseases among those with or without hypouricemia. RESULTS:The prevalence of hypouricemia was 0.19% in St. Luke's International Hospital, Tokyo, and 0.58% in Sanin Rousai Hospital, Yonago. Most hymenopteran species exhibit conspicuous sexual dimorphism due to ecological differences between the sexes. As hymenopteran genomes, under the haplodiploid genetic system, exhibit quantitative differences between sexes while remaining qualitatively identical, sexual phenotypes are assumed to be expressed through sex-specific gene usage. In the present study, the molecular basis for expression of sexual dimorphism in a queenless ant, Diacamma sp., which exhibits a distinct color dimorphism, was examined. Worker females of the species appear bluish-black, while winged males exhibit a yellowish-brown body color. Initially, observations of the pigmentation processes during pupal development revealed that black pigmentation was present in female pupae but not in males, suggesting that sex-specific melanin synthesis was responsible for the observed color dimorphism. Therefore, five orthologs of the genes involved in the insect melanin synthesis (yellow, ebony, tan, pale and dopa decarboxylase) were subcloned and their spatiotemporal expression patterns were examined using real-time quantitative RT-PCR. Of the genes examined, yellow, which plays a role in black melanin synthesis in insects, was expressed at higher levels in females than in males throughout the entire body during the pupal stage. RNA interference of yellow was then carried out in order to determine the gene function, and produced females with a more yellowish, brighter body color similar to that of males. It was concluded that transcriptional regulation of yellow was responsible for the sexual color dimorphism observed in this species.
