We report on the Yamaguchi Interferometer (YI), a one-baseline radio interferometer consisting of two radio telescopes with diameters of 32 m and 34 m. The YI is capable of making observations at frequencies of 6.9 GHz and 8.4 GHz for left-hand and right-hand circular polarizations with a bandwidth of 512 MHz. The detection sensitivity for a continuum source is 1.6 mJy (5σ) for an integration time of 1000 s. The high sensitivity is the major advantage of the YI. We use the YI mainly for monitoring observations of sources with fast variability, such as micro-quasars.

We report dual-frequency very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations at 22 and 43 GHz toward the nucleus of a nearby radio galaxy NGC 4261. In particular, we present a VLBI image of the 22 GHz H2O maser line and its location in the circumnuclear region of NGC 4261. H2O maser emission is marginally detected above the three times the rms level within a velocity range of approximately 2250-2450 km/s, slightly red-shifted with respect to the systemic velocity. H2O maser emission is located approximately 1 milliarcsecond (mas) east of the brightest continuum component at 22 GHz, where the continuum spectrum is optically thick, that is at the free-free absorbed receding jet by ionized gas. A positional coincidence between H2O maser emission and an ionized gas disk implies that the H2O maser emission arises from the near side of the disk, amplifying continuum emission from the background receding jet. If the disk axis is oriented 64 degree relative to the line of sight, the H2O maser emission is expected to be at a mean radius of 0.3 pc in the disk. The broad line width of the H2O maser emission can be attributed to complex kinematics in the immediate vicinity of the supermassive black hole (SMBH), including ongoing gas infall onto the SMBH, turbulence, and outflow. This is analogous to the multi-phase circumnuclear torus model in the nearest radio-loud H2O megamaser source NGC 1052. An alternative explanation for H2O maser association is the shock region between the jet and the ambient molecular clouds. Powerful relativistic jets in active galactic nuclei (AGN) are believed to be originated from the accretion of material onto the supermassive black hole (SMBH)1. The nearby radio galaxy M87 is one of the best examples of this phenomenon, and the recent detection of a black-hole shadow with the Event Horizon Telescope provided compelling evidence for this paradigm2. However, whether the central SMBH in M87 has a spin or not, a fundamental parameter of a BH along with the mass, remains unconstrained by observations since the appearance of the photon ring is rather insensitive to the spin2-4. A clue to this challenge is to trace the long-term evolution of the innermost jet base where the central BH and accretion disk tightly regulate its flow dynamics. Here we report an extensive analysis of the morphological evolution of the M87 jet nozzle based on 170 high-resolution radio images spanning more than two decades. The ensemble of the data reveals a periodic (a period of 11 years) variation of the jet direction with a peak-to-peak amplitude of ~10 deg on the sky. A successful fit of a precession model to the data as well as general-relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations strongly supports the presence of a spinning BH in M87, inducing a Lense-Thirring precession of a misaligned accretion disk by the frame-dragging effect5. Our results suggest that jet precession with a spinning BH can commonly exist in other more distant AGN but had evaded detection due to the small magnitude and long period of position angle variation.

The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) serendipitously detected H$_2$O $J_{Ka, Kc} = 10_{2,9} - 9_{3,6}$ emission at 321 GHz in NGC 1052. This is the first submillimeter maser detection in a radio galaxy and the most luminous 321-GHz H$_2$O maser known to date with the isotropic luminosity of 1090 $L_{\odot}$. The line profile consists of a broad velocity component with FWHM $= 208 \pm 12$ km s$^{-1}$ straddling the systemic velocity and a narrow component with FWHM $= 44 \pm 3$ km s$^{-1}$ blueshifted by 160 km s$^{-1}$. The profile is significantly different from the known 22-GHz $6_{1,6} - 5_{2,3}$ maser which shows a broad profile redshifted by 193 km s$^{-1}$. The submillimeter maser is spatially unresolved with a synthesized beam of $0^{\prime \prime}.68 \times 0^{\prime \prime}.56$ and coincides with the continuum core position within 12 pc. These results indicate amplification of the continuum emission through high-temperature ($>1000$ K) and dense ($n({\rm H}_2{\rm O}) > 10^4$ cm$^{-3}$) molecular gas in front of the core, 3 figures, Accepted for publication in Publications of Astronomical Society of Japan

The cold molecular gas in the circumnuclear disk (CND) of radio galaxies provides critical information for understanding the mass accretion onto active galactic nuclei. We present the first detection and maps of HCN J=1-0 and HCO+ J=1-0 emission lines from the circumnuclear region of a nearby radio galaxy, NGC 4261, using the Northern Extended Millimeter Array. Both molecular lines are detected at a radial velocity of +-700 km/s relative to the systemic velocity of the galaxy, and they arise from a CND with an outer radius of 100 pc. The velocity fields of HCN and HCO+ are fitted with a Keplerian disk rotation. The enclosed mass is (1.6+-0.1)x10^9 M_solar, assuming a disk inclination angle of 64 degree. The continuum image at 80 GHz reveals a weak two-sided jet structure extending over 5 kpc along the east-west direction and a bright core at the centre. The continuum spectrum between 80 and 230 GHz shows a spectral index of -0.34+-0.02, which suggests optically thin synchrotron radiation. The dense gas mass associated with the CND is calculated to be 6.03x10^7 M_solar. It supports a positive correlation between the dense gas mass in the CND and the accretion rate onto the supermassive black hole, though there are uncertainties in the parameters of the correlation., 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Because of its proximity and the large size of its black hole, M87 is one of the best targets for studying the launching mechanism of active galactic nucleus jets. Currently, magnetic fields are considered to be an essential factor in the launching and accelerating of the jet. However, current observational estimates of the magnetic field strength of the M87 jet are limited to the innermost part of the jet or to HST-1. No attempt has yet been made to measure the magnetic field strength in between. We aim to infer the magnetic field strength of the M87 jet out to a distance of several thousand $r_s$ by tracking the distance-dependent changes in the synchrotron spectrum of the jet from high-resolution very long baseline interferometry observations. In order to obtain high-quality spectral index maps, quasi-simultaneous observations at 22 and 43 GHz were conducted using the KVN and VERA Array (KaVA) and the VLBA. We compared the spectral index distributions obtained from the observations with a model and placed limits on the magnetic field strengths as a function of distance. The overall spectral morphology is broadly consistent over the course of these observations. The observed synchrotron spectrum rapidly steepens from $\alpha_{22-43 GHz}$ ~ -0.7 at ~ 2 mas to $\alpha_{22-43 GHz}$ ~ -2.5 at ~ 6 mas. A spectral index model in which nonthermal electron injections inside the jet decrease with distance can adequately reproduce the observed trend. This suggests the magnetic field strength of the jet at a distance of 2 - 10 mas (~ 900 $r_s$ - ~ 4500 $r_s$ in the deprojected distance) has a range of $B=(0.3 - 1.0 G)(z/2 mas)^{-0.73}$. Extrapolating to the EHT scale yields consistent results, suggesting that the majority of the magnetic flux of the jet near the black hole is preserved out to ~ 4500 $r_s$ without significant dissipation., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures. EAVN aims at forming a joint VLBI Network by combining a large number of radio telescopes distributed over East Asian regions. After the combination of the Korean VLBI Network (KVN) and the VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA) into KaVA, further expansion with the joint array in East Asia is actively promoted. Here we report the first imaging results (at 22 and 43 GHz) of bright radio sources obtained with KaVA connected to Tianma 65-m and Nanshan 26-m Radio Telescopes in China. To test the EAVN imaging performance for different sources, we observed four active galactic nuclei (AGN) having different brightness and morphology. As a result, we confirmed that the Tianma 65-m Radio Telescope (TMRT) significantly enhances the overall array sensitivity, a factor of 4 improvement in baseline sensitivity and 2 in image dynamic range compared to the case of KaVA only. The addition of the Nanshan 26-m Radio Telescope (NSRT) further doubled the east-west angular resolution. With the resulting high-dynamic-range, high-resolution images with EAVN (KaVA+TMRT+NSRT), various fine-scale structures in our targets, such as the counter-jet in M87, a kink-like morphology of the 3C 273 jet and the weak emission in other sources are successfully detected. This demonstrates the powerful capability of EAVN to study AGN jets and to achieve other science goals in general. In this study, we have carried out observations toward Sgr A* at 1.349 cm (22.223 GHz) and 6.950 mm (43.135 GHz) with the East Asian VLBI Network, as a part of the multiwavelength campaign of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) in 2017 April. To mitigate scattering effects, the physically motivated scattering kernel model from Psaltis et al. (2018) and the scattering parameters from Johnson et al. (2018) have been applied. As a result, a single, symmetric Gaussian model well describes the intrinsic structure of Sgr A* at both wavelengths. From closure amplitudes, the major-axis sizes are ∼704 ± 102 μas (axial ratio ∼${1.19}_{-0.19}^{+0.24}$) and ∼300 ± 25 μas (axial ratio ∼1.28 ± 0.2) at 1.349 cm and 6.95 mm, respectively. Together with a quasi-simultaneous observation at 3.5 mm (86 GHz) by Issaoun et al. (2019), we show that the intrinsic size scales with observing wavelength as a power law, with an index ∼1.2 ± 0.2. Our results also provide estimates of the size and compact flux density at 1.3 mm, which can be incorporated into the analysis of the EHT observations. In terms of the origin of radio emission, we have compared the intrinsic structures with the accretion flow scenario, especially the radiatively inefficient accretion flow based on the Keplerian shell model. With this, we show that a nonthermal electron population is necessary to reproduce the source sizes. © 2022. The Author(s). The asymmetric ring morphology and size are consistent with theoretical expectations for a weakly accreting supermassive black hole of mass ∼6.5 × 109 M o˙. The EHTC also partnered with several international facilities in space and on the ground, to arrange an extensive, quasi-simultaneous multi-wavelength campaign. This Letter presents the results and analysis of this campaign, as well as the multi-wavelength data as a legacy data repository. We captured M87 in a historically low state, and the core flux dominates over HST-1 at high energies, making it possible to combine core flux constraints with the more spatially precise very long baseline interferometry data. We present the most complete simultaneous multi-wavelength spectrum of the active nucleus to date, and discuss the complexity and caveats of combining data from different spatial scales into one broadband spectrum. We apply two heuristic, isotropic leptonic single-zone models to provide insight into the basic source properties, but conclude that a structured jet is necessary to explain M87's spectrum. We can exclude that the simultaneous γ-ray emission is produced via inverse Compton emission in the same region producing the EHT mm-band emission, and further conclude that the γ-rays can only be produced in the inner jets (inward of HST-1) if there are strongly particle-dominated regions. We report ALMA observations of NGC 1052 to quest mass accretion in a gas-poor active galactic nucleus (AGN). We detected CO emission representing a rotating ring-like circumnuclear disk (CND) seen edge-on with the gas mass of $5.3 \times 10^{5}$ M$_{\odot}$. The CND has smaller gas mass than that in typical Seyfert galaxies with circumnuclear star formation and is too gas-poor to drive mass accretion onto the central engine. The continuum emission casts molecular absorption features of CO, HCN, HCO$^+$, SO, SO$_2$, CS, CN, and H$_2$O, with H$^{13}$CN and HC$^{15}$N and vibrationally-excited (v$_2 = 1$) HCN and HCO$^+$. Broader absorption line widths than CND emission line widths imply presence of a geometrically thick molecular torus with a radius of $2.4 \pm 1.3$ pc and a thickness ratio of $0.7 \pm 0.3$. We estimate the H$_2$ column density of $(3.3 \pm 0.7) \times 10^{25}$ cm$^{-2}$ using H$^{12}$CN, H$^{13}$CN, and HCO$^{+}$ absorption features and adopting abundance ratio of $^{12}$C-to-$^{13}$C and a HCO$^{+}$-to-H$_2$, and derived the torus gas mass of $(1.3 \pm 0.3) \times 10^7$ M$_{\odot}$, which is $\sim 9$\% of the central black-hole mass. The molecular gas in the torus is clumpy with the estimated covering factor of $0.17^{+0.06}_{-0.03}$. The gas density of clumps inside the torus is inferred to be $(6.4 \pm 1.3) \times 10^7$ cm$^{-3}$, which meets the excitation conditions of H$_2$O maser. Specific angular momentum in the torus exceeds a flat-rotation curve extrapolated from that of the CND, indicating a Keplerian rotation inside a 14.4-pc sphere of influence., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 27 pages, 13 figures, 7 tables

We investigated the jet width profile with distance along the jet in the nearby radio galaxy NGC 1052 at radial distances between $\sim300$ to $4 \times 10^7$ Schwarzschild Radii($R_{\rm S}$) from the central engine on both their approaching and receding jet sides. The width of jets was measured in images obtained with the VLBI Space Observatory Programme (VSOP), the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), and the Very Large Array (VLA). The jet-width profile of receding jets are apparently consistent with that of approaching jets throughout the measuring distance ranges, indicating symmetry at least up to the sphere of gravitational influence of the central black hole. The power-law index $a$ of the jet-width profile ($w_{\rm{jet}} \propto r^{a}$, where $w_{\rm jet}$ is the jet width, $r$ is the distance from the central engine in the unit of $R_{\rm S}$) apparently shows a transition from $a \sim 0$ to $a \sim 1$, i.e., the cylindrical-to-conical jet structures, at a distance of $\sim1\times10^{4} \ R_{\mathrm{S}}$. The cylindrical jet shape at the small distances is reminiscent of the innermost jets in 3C 84. We present the first astrometry catalog from the Japanese VLBI (very long baseline interferometer) project VERA (VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry). We have compiled all the astrometry results from VERA, providing accurate trigonometric annual parallax and proper motion measurements. In total, 99 maser sources are listed in the VERA catalog. Among them, 21 maser sources are newly reported while the rest of 78 sources are referred to previously published results or those in preparation for forthcoming papers. The accuracy in the VERA astrometry are revisited and compared with those from the other VLBI astrometry projects such as BeSSeL (The Bar and Spiral Structure Legacy) Survey and GOBELINS (the Gould's Belt Distances Survey) with the VLBA (Very Long Baseline Array). We have confirmed that most of the astrometry results are consistent with each other, and the largest error sources are due to source structure of the maser features and their rapid variation, along with the systematic calibration errors and different analysis methods. Combined with the BeSSeL results, we estimate the up-to-date fundamental Galactic parameter of $R_{0}=7.92\pm0.16_{\rm{stat.}}\pm0.3_{\rm{sys.}}$~kpc and $\Omega_{\odot}=30.17\pm0.27_{\rm{stat.}}\pm0.3_{\rm{sys.}}$~km~s$^{-1}$~kpc$^{-1}$, where $R_{0}$ and $\Omega_{\odot}$ are the distance from the Sun to the Galactic center and the Sun's angular velocity of the Galactic circular rotation, respectively., Comment: 35 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in the Publications of the Astronomical Society of Japan

We study the kinematics of the M87 jet using the first year data of the KVN and VERA Array (KaVA) large program, which has densely monitored the jet at 22 and 43 GHz since 2016. We find that the apparent jet speeds generally increase from $\approx0.3c$ at $\approx0.5$ mas from the jet base to $\approx2.7c$ at $\approx20$ mas, indicating that the jet is accelerated from subluminal to superluminal speeds on these scales. We perform a complementary jet kinematic analysis by using archival Very Long Baseline Array monitoring data observed in $2005-2009$ at 1.7 GHz and find that the jet is moving at relativistic speeds up to $\approx5.8c$ at distances of $200-410$ mas. We combine the two kinematic results and find that the jet is gradually accelerated over a broad distance range that coincides with the jet collimation zone, implying that conversion of Poynting flux to kinetic energy flux takes place. If the jet emission consists of a single streamline, the observed trend of jet acceleration ($\Gamma\propto z^{0.16\pm0.01}$) is relatively slow compared to models of a highly magnetized jet. This indicates that Poynting flux conversion through the differential collimation of poloidal magnetic fields may be less efficient than expected. However, we find a non-negligible dispersion in the observed speeds for a given jet distance, making it difficult to describe the jet velocity field with a single power-law acceleration function. In the circumnuclear region of the nearby radio galaxy NGC~1052. Our $\lambda$3mm VLBI observations with the Korean VLBI Network have spatially resolved the broad HCO$^{+}$ absorption at a velocity range of 1350--1850 km~s$^{-1}$ against a double-sided nuclear jet, and have revealed that the HCO$^{+}$ absorption is concentrated on the receding jet and the nuclear components. The distribution of the HCO$^{+}$ absorbing gas strongly supports the circumnuclear torus surrounding the supermassive black hole. From the estimations of the column density and the volume density of molecular hydrogen, the size of the molecular gas region in the torus is at least 1~pc. The broad spectral profile of HCO$^{+}$ is likely to be a blend of multiple gas clumps with various velocities. The HCO$^{+}$ absorption of NGC~1052 could trace complex kinematics in the vicinity of the active galactic nucleus, such as inflow, outflow, turbulence, and so on., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, To appear in ApJ Letters

We present the first VLBI detection of HCN molecular absorption in the nearby active galactic nucleus NGC 1052. Utilizing the 1 milliarcsecond resolution achieved by the Korean VLBI Network, we have spatially resolved the HCN absorption against a double-sided nuclear jet structure. Two velocity features of HCN absorption are detected significantly at the radial velocity of 1656 and 1719 km/s, redshifted by 149 and 212 km/s with respect to the systemic velocity of the galaxy. The column density of the HCN molecule is estimated to be 10^{15}-10^{16} cm^{-2}, assuming the excitation temperature of 100-230 K. The absorption features show high optical depth localized on the receding jet side, where the free-free absorption occurred due to the circumnuclear torus. The size of the foreground absorbing molecular gas is estimated to be on approximately one-parsec scales, which agrees well with the approximate size of the circumnuclear torus. HCN absorbing gas is likely to be several clumps smaller than 0.1 parsec inside the circumnuclear torus. The redshifted velocities of the HCN absorption features imply that HCN absorbing gas traces ongoing infall motion inside the circumnuclear torus onto the central engine., 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

We have used the Submillimeter Array (SMA) to make the first interferometric observations (beam size ~1") of the 12CO J=6-5 line and 435 micron (690 GHz) continuum emission toward the central region of the nearby ULIRG Arp 220. These observations resolve the eastern and western nuclei from each other, in both the molecular line and dust continuum emission. At 435 micron, the peak intensity of the western nucleus is stronger than the eastern nucleus, and the difference in peak intensities is less than at longer wavelengths. Fitting a simple model to the dust emission observed between 1.3 mm and 435 micron suggests that dust emissivity power law index in the western nucleus is near unity and steeper in the eastern nucleus, about 2, and that the dust emission is optically thick at the shorter wavelength. Comparison with single dish measurements indicate that the interferometer observations are missing ~60% of the dust emission, most likely from a spatially extended component to which these observations are not sensitive. The 12CO J=6-5 line observations clearly resolve kinematically the two nuclei. The distribution and kinematics of the 12CO J=6-5 line appear to be very similar to lower J CO lies observed at similar resolution. Analysis of multiple 12CO line intensities indicates that the molecular gas in both nuclei have similar excitation conditions, although the western nucleus is warmer and denser. The excitation conditions are similar to those found in other extreme environments, including M82, Mrk 231, and BR 1202-0725. Simultaneous lower resolution observations of the 12CO, 13CO, and C18O J=2-1 lines show that the 13CO and C18O lines have similar intensities, which suggests that both of these lines are optically thick, or possibly that extreme high mass star formation has produced in an overabundance of C18O.

We present multi-frequency simultaneous VLBA observations at 15, 22 and 43 GHz towards the nucleus of the nearby radio galaxy NGC 1052. These three continuum images reveal a double-sided jet structure, whose relative intensity ratios imply that the jet axis is oriented close to the sky plane. The steeply rising spectra at 15-43 GHz at the inner edges of the jets strongly suggest that synchrotron emission is absorbed by foreground thermal plasma. We detected H_2O maser emission in the velocity range of 1550-1850 km/s, which is redshifted by 50-350 km/s with respect to the systemic velocity of NGC 1052. The redshifted maser gas appears projected against both sides of the jet, similar to the HI seen in absorption. The H_2O maser gas is located where the free-free absorption opacity is large. This probably implies that the masers in NGC 1052 are associated with a circumnuclear torus or disk as in the nucleus of NGC 4258. We have mapped the central region of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 1097 in 12CO(J=2-1) with the Submillieter Array (SMA). The 12CO(J=2-1) map shows a central concentration and a surrounding ring, which coincide respectively with the Seyfert nucleus and a starburst ring. The line intensity peaks at the nucleus, whereas in a previously published 12CO(J=1-0) map the intensity peaks at the starburst ring. The molecular ring has an azimuthally averaged 12CO(J=2-1)/(J=1-0) intensity ratio (R21) of about unity, which is similar to those in nearby active star forming galaxies, suggesting that most of the molecular mass in the ring is involved in fueling the starburst. The molecular gas can last for only about 1.2\times10^8 years without further replenishment assuming a constant star formation rate and a perfect conversion of gas to stars. The velocity map shows that the central molecular gas is rotating with the molecular ring in the same direction, while its velocity gradient is much steeper than that of the ring. This velocity gradient of the central gas is similar to what is usually observed in some Seyfert 2 galaxies. To view the active nucleus directly in the optical, the central molecular gas structure can either be a low-inclined disk or torus but not too low to be less massive than the mass of the host galaxy itself, be a highly-inclined thin disk or clumpy and thick torus, or be an inner part of the galactic disk. We present results of the VLBA observation toward the radio continuum and water maser emissions in a nearby LINER galaxy NGC 1052. The jet structure observed in 2000 is similar to that in 1998, and the two jet structures in 1998 and 2000 support the sub-luminal motion with apparent velocity of 0.26c. Distribution of water maser spots are located 0.05 pc shifted to southwest from the component which is supported to be the nucleus, and no rapid positional change of the water maser gas with respect to the central engine is seen from 1995 to 2000. The maser gas is positionally coincident with a plasma torus, and the position of the maser gas relative to the nucleus is stable from 1995 to 2000. The maser gas in NGC 1052 could be explained to be associated with the nuclear circumnuclear torus or disk like the situation found in the nucleus of NGC 4258.

We present high resolution studies of the nuclear region in NGC 3079 with phase-referenced VLBI monitoring between its water maser and continuum emission. From results of the observations, NGC 3079 showed relative motion between core-jet-like continuum components. One of the components (A) relative to the reference maser feature moved with an apparent subluminal velocity along the SE-NW direction, almost parallel to alignment of the components. On the other hand, the position of the other component (B) did not show such a significant change. If the maser gas is associated with a rotating disk, the maser gas should be gravitationally bound to the central mass. This suggests that B and A are the nucleus and jet, respectively.

We present the frequent VLBI monitoring results of blazar OJ 287 at 22 GHz band using the VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA) from 2010 November to 2012 September. Time interval of the monitoring is typically once or twice per month. The 22-GHz light curve of OJ 287 show three obvious increasing activities around 2011 May, 2011 October, and 2012 March, with a timescale of < 4 months. The second radio increasing events occurred at the same time as the γ-ray flare in 2011 October detected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT), and the third one seemed to precede the γ-ray flares in 2012, exhibiting different behaviour from the previous γ-ray flaring events in 2009. The relative motion of one jet component from the core was rectilinear super luminal motion (~ 8c) from the 2011 February to 2011 November toward the south direction, and then it changed the direction backward. The direction variation of the relative motion was seen from 2011 November to 2012 August, simultaneously with the γ-ray flares. It could be caused by a new ejected component in the innermost region.

We present a discussion on high-resolution studies of the nuclear region of NGC 3079 using observations of an H2O maser and continuum emission as well as HI absorption with a global VLBI network including the VLBA, the phased VLA and the Effelsberg 100 m telescope. Multi-frequency observations of the continuum emission reveal the spectra of continuum components and suggest a core-jet morphology. The H2O maser spots lie in a series of clusters distributed along a north-south direction, while we rule out any possibility that the masering disk lies along the north-south direction. HI absorption features towards the continuum components have a velocity gradient opposite to that observed in the galaxy as a whole. We identify the nucleus and rotation axis of the central 10 pc region, and discuss the properties of a postulated rotating torus in the nuclear region.

We present the first internal motion measurement of the 6.7-GHz methanol maser within S269, a small HII region in the outer Galaxy, which was carried out in 2006 and 2011 using the Japanese VLBI Network (JVN). Several maser groups and weak isolated spots were detected in an area spanning by ~200 mas (1000 AU). Three remarkable maser groups are aligned at a position angle of 80 degree. Two of three maser groups were also detected by a previous observation in 1998, which allowed us to study a long-term position variation of maser spots from 1998 to 2011. The angular separation between the two groups increased ~10 mas, which corresponds to an expansion velocity of ~10 km s^{-1}. Some velocity gradient (~10^{-2} km s^{-1} mas^{-1}) in the overall distribution was found. We introduce the GENJI program (Gamma-ray Emitting Notable AGN Monitoring by Japanese VLBI), which is a monitoring program of gamma-ray bright AGNs with the VERA array (VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry). The GENJI programme aims a dense monitoring at 22 GHz towards the $\gamma$-ray emitting active galactic nuclei (AGNs) to investigate the radio time variation of the core and possible ejection of new radio component, motion of jets, and their relation with the emission at other wavelengths especially in $\gamma$-rays. Currently we are monitoring 8 $\gamma$-ray-emitting notable AGNs (DA 55, 3C 84, M 87, PKS 1510-089, DA 406, NRAO 530, BL Lac, 3C 454.3) about once every two weeks. This programme is promising to trace the trend of radio time variation on shorter timescale than conventional VLBI monitoring programme and to provide complimentary data with them (e.g., MOJAVE, Boston University Blazar Project). In particular, we successfully coordinated quick follow-up observations after the GeV $\gamma$-ray flare in NRAO 530 and 3C 454.3 reported by the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. We present multi-frequency observations towards GHz-Peaked Spectrum (GPS) sources with the VLBA. Recent VSOP observations of a GPS source OQ208 have shown that its convex spectrum is caused by free–free absorption (FFA) due to external ionized gas surrounding the source. The keys are: (1) sharp cut-off at low frequency in the spectrum, and (2) asymmetric peak frequency in double lobe. In order to investigate the nature of FFA in GPS sources, we observed nine objects (five QSOs, two RGs, two Sy2s) selected from GPS catalog. We tried spectral fitting using FFA model for each source. All QSOs show asymmetric FFA opacities like OQ208 does, while the opacity of RGs and Sy2s are symmetric. This supports the unification model between RGs and QSOs.

We have measured the annual parallax of the H2O maser source associated with an infrared dark cloud MSXDC G034.43+00.24 from the observations with VERA (VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry). The parallax is 0.643 +/- 0.049 mas, corresponding to the distance of 1.56 +0.12/-0.11 kpc. This value is less than the half of the previous kinematic distance of 3.7 kpc. We revise the core mass estimates of MSXDC G034.43+00.24, based on virial masses, LTE masses and dust masses and show that the core masses decrease from the previous estimations of ~1000 Mo to hundreds of Mo. The spectral type derived from the luminosity also changes from O9.5 to B1 in the case of MM1. This spectral type is still consistent with that of the massive star. The radial velocity derived from the flat rotation model is smaller than the observed velocity, which corresponds to the peculiar motion of ~40 km/s in the line-of-sight direction., 14 pages, 11 figures, accepted to PASJ (vol. 63, No. 3)

We report the recent VLBI imaging of the 51 → 60 A+ transition 6.7 GHz methanol maser sources associated with massive star-forming regions using the Japanese VLBI Network (JVN). Currently, JVN consists of ten antennas spread across Japan from Hokkaido to Ishigaki islands, and operates at frequencies around 6.7, 8.3 and 22 GHz. The observing system of 6.7 GHz now has been installed in six of them; all of four NAOJ VERA stations (Mizusawa, Ogasawara, Iriki, Ishigaki), Yamaguchi 32-m antenna and ISAS Usuda 64-m antenna, with baseline lengths range from 293 to 2270 km. We have carried out the JVN observations toward 6.7 GHz methanol maser sources since 2005, and continue to obtain high angular resolution images of them. In this paper, we present detailed 6.7 GHz methanol maser distributions of three sources, W3(OH), G9.62+0.20 and S269, and describe the results of each individual source.

In order to account for the velocity field, we propose a kinematical model in which the warped rotating disk is also expanding. The line ratio of CO(2-1)/CO(1-0) reveals that the eastern component with the anomalous velocity gradient appears to be warmer and denser. This is consistent with the gas in this component being closer to the center, being heated by the central activities, and possibly interacting with expanding motions from the nuclear region.

We present VLBI maps of the 6.7 GHz methanol maser emission in 32 sources obtained using the Japanese VLBI Network (JVN) and the East-Asian VLBI Network (EAVN). All of the observed sources provide new VLBI maps, and the spatial morphologies have been classified into five categories similar to the results obtained from European VLBI Network observations (Bartkiewicz et al. 2009). The 32 methanol sources are being monitored to measure the relative proper motions of the methanol maser spots.

In order to search for new VLBI sources in the Galactic plane that can be used as phase reference sources in differential VLBI, we have conducted 22 GHz observations of radio sources in the Galactic plane using the Japanese VLBI Network (J-Net). We have observed 267 VLBI source candidates selected from existing radio surveys and have detected 93 sources at the signal-to-noise ratio larger than 5. While 42 of the 93 detected sources had already been detected with VLBI at relatively lower frequency (typically 2 to 8 GHz), the remaining 51 are found to be new VLBI sources detected for the first time. These VLBI sources are located within $|b|\le 5^\circ$, and have a large number of Galactic maser sources around them. Thus, they are potential candidates for phase reference sources for VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA), which is the first VLBI array dedicated to the phase referencing VLBI astrometry aiming at measuring the parallax and proper motion of maser sources in the whole Galaxy., Comment: to be published in PASJ (2000, Vol.52, No.5), 13 pages and 2 figures

We present VLBA observation towards the nucleus of a nearby radio galaxy NGC 1052. In NGC 1052, two-sided jet structure and a dense plasma circumnuclear torus with a radius of 0.7 pc have been found around the central mass. It emits a H2O megamaser, which is redshifted with respect to the systemic velocity of the galaxy (1491 kms−1) with a large velocity width of 100 kms−1 (FWHM). The maser gas is found at the inner jet components of both the approaching and receding jets. The maser gas is positionally coincident with a plasma torus. The maser gas in NGC 1052 could be explained as a circumnuclear torus or disk, as found for the nucleus of NGC 4258.

We conducted an observation of weak HI and OH absorption features in the parsec-scale nuclear region of NGC 3079 using a global VLBI network; the VLBA, the VLA and the Green Bank 43-m telescope of NRAO. One mas corresponds to 0.076 pc in NGC 3079.
