In this work, p-type cuprous oxide (Cu2O) films grown on beta gallium oxide (β-Ga2O3) substrates by magnetron sputtering were reported. The resulting vertical Cu2O/β-Ga2O3 heterojunction p–n diodes demonstrated superior performance compared to devices fabricated with polycrystalline Cu2O thin films. Meanwhile, analysis of the discrepancies between the built-in potential and turn-on voltage revealed diverse carrier transport mechanisms in the fabricated devices. Numerical fitting of the forward J–V characteristics further discerned that distinct carrier transport mechanisms dominated under various bias voltages or temperature conditions. At 300 K, trap-assisted tunneling dominates the regime because of the presence of defects in β-Ga2O3 or Cu2O. While the bias voltage is low, the polycrystalline nature of the films formed at room temperature leads to the prevalence of grain boundaries as the primary source of interface-type defects at the Cu2O/β-Ga2O3 interface. Consequently, the dominant mechanism governing carrier transport is interface recombination. As the temperature increases, however, thermionic emission becomes more important. This study presents an opportunity for further investigation into the epitaxial growth of Cu2O and provides insights into the carrier transport mechanism of β-Ga2O3-based heterojunctions. The traditional interpretation of Burke's political economy emphasised his defense of free trade, and his intellectual relationship with Smith has also been the centre of scholarly attention. This article attempts a systematic comparison between Burke and Smith and shows in detail how Burke's concern with political stability, a great source of his economic thinking, helped distinguish his political economy from that of Smith's. Burke was especially concerned with the link between the conservation of manners and social development. This essay analyses Burke's ideas on European history, which lay scattered over his works, and suggests that Burke may have considered Europe, with the notable exception of ancient Rome, as having been in a state of barbarism or confusion from the ancient era until the sixteenth century, despite the gradual development of society. Unlike some of his contemporaries, he did not closely examine the growth of a European state system, nor the rise of the balance of power in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Nor did he specially underline the collapse of feudalism and the process of establishing absolute monarchy. Instead, Burke stressed more fundamental elements. While he often drew attention to the glimmer of hope towards future prosperity amid devastation, which dominated large parts of European history, his ideas on European history reflected his long-held social theory that nations could revive and develop as long as the foundations of society were not damaged. Although ‘Burke and Irish history’ is a theme which has long been known to modern commentators, it has not necessarily been addressed sufficiently. This essay seeks to put forward a more comprehensive account of Burke's views on Irish history than has previously been offered by scholars. According to Burke, the protection of Christianity had brought flourishing science to seventh- and eighth-century Ireland. Nevertheless, the nation was plunged into a barbarous state after the invasions of the Danes and other northern tribes. Burke's sympathy with the Brehon law was possibly unique, although he was not uncritical of it. Unlike the Irish patriots, his chief concern with historical Ireland was not the origins of the Irish legislature. He was rather most interested in the religious affairs which had continued to plague the nation during history. Throughout his career, Burke considered the Irish Rebellion of 1641 to have been ‘provoked’, and continuously endeavoured to remove the penal laws imposed on the Roman Catholics after the Williamite Conquest of 1689–1691. In his view, despite the substantial increase in prosperity after 1688/9, the series of religious persecutions, as well as other oppressive policies, had still obstructed the further progress of Irish society. BackgroundLittle information is available on the role of community-based rehabilitation after a nuclear disaster. Here, we report the case of an older couple living in an area repopulated after the Fukushima nuclear disaster of 2011 who received outpatient rehabilitation.Case presentationAn 84-year-old woman underwent total hip arthroplasty (THA) after she fell and sustained a trochanteric fracture while caring for her husband with Alzheimer's disease. The 85-year-old husband experienced worsening behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) following his wife's hospitalization. The couple received rehabilitation at an outpatient facility in a nearby village using a shuttle service. The woman's postoperative anxiety was relieved and her physical function improved. Moreover, the husband's BPSD symptoms decreased.ConclusionA wife and husband showed improvement in physical function after THA and alleviation of BPSD, respectively, following rehabilitation. In post-disaster, resource-scarce areas, older adults may benefit from utilizing the outpatient rehabilitation services available in the surrounding area.
