Many dynamical systems exhibit unexpected large amplitude excursions in the chronological progression of a state variable. In the present work, we consider the dynamics associated with the one-dimensional Higgs oscillator which is realized through gnomic projection of a harmonic oscillator defined on a spherical space of constant curvature onto a Euclidean plane which is tangent to the spherical space. While studying the dynamics of such a Higgs oscillator subjected to damping and an external forcing, various bifurcation phenomena, such as symmetry breaking, period doubling, and intermittency crises are encountered. As the driven parameter increases, the route to chaos takes place via intermittency crisis and we also identify the occurrence of extreme events due to the interior crisis. The study of probability distribution also confirms the occurrence of extreme events. Oceanographers rely on visual analysis to interpret model simulations, identify events and phenomena, and track dynamic ocean processes. The ever increasing resolution and complexity of ocean data due to its dynamic nature and multivariate relationships demands a scalable and adaptable visualization tool for interactive exploration. We introduce pyParaOcean, a scalable and interactive visualization system designed specifically for ocean data analysis. pyParaOcean offers specialized modules for common oceanographic analysis tasks, including eddy identification and salinity movement tracking. These modules seamlessly integrate with ParaView as filters, ensuring a user-friendly and easy-to-use system while leveraging the parallelization capabilities of ParaView and a plethora of inbuilt general-purpose visualization functionalities. The creation of an auxiliary dataset stored as a Cinema database helps address I/O and network bandwidth bottlenecks while supporting the generation of quick overview visualizations. We present a case study on the Bay of Bengal (BoB) to demonstrate the utility of the system and scaling studies to evaluate the efficiency of the system.

Land-use and land cover (LULC) analysis is critical in remote sensing, with wide-ranging applications across diverse fields such as agriculture, utilities, and urban planning. However, automating LULC map generation using machine learning is rendered challenging due to noisy labels. Typically, the ground truths (e.g. ESRI LULC, MapBioMass) have noisy labels that hamper the model's ability to learn to accurately classify the pixels. Further, these erroneous labels can significantly distort the performance metrics of a model, leading to misleading evaluations. Traditionally, the ambiguous labels are rectified using unsupervised algorithms. These algorithms struggle not only with scalability but also with generalization across different geographies. To overcome these challenges, we propose a zero-shot approach using the foundation model, Segment Anything Model (SAM), to automatically delineate different land parcels/regions and leverage them to relabel the unsure pixels by using the local label statistics within each detected region. We achieve a significant reduction in label noise and an improvement in the performance of the downstream segmentation model by $\approx 5\%$ when trained with denoised labels.

Incorporating cloud technology with Internet of Medical Things for ubiquitous healthcare has seen many successful applications in the last decade with the advent of machine learning and deep learning techniques. One of these applications, namely voice-based pathology, has yet to receive notable attention from academia and industry. Applying voice analysis to early detection of fatal diseases holds much promise to improve health outcomes and quality of life of patients. In this paper, we propose a novel application of acoustic machine learning based triaging into commoditised conversational virtual assistant systems to pre-screen for onset of diabetes. Specifically, we developed a triaging system which extracts acoustic features from the voices of n=24 older adults when they converse with a virtual assistant and predict the incidence of Diabetes Mellitus (Type 2) or not. Our triaging system achieved hit-rates of 70% and 60% for male and female older adult subjects, respectively. Our proposed triaging uses 7 non-identifiable voice-based features and can operate within resource-constrained embedded systems running voice-based virtual assistants. Large Language Models (LLMs) are susceptible to security and safety threats, such as prompt injection, prompt extraction, and harmful requests. One major cause of these vulnerabilities is the lack of an instruction hierarchy. Modern LLM architectures treat all inputs equally, failing to distinguish between and prioritize various types of instructions, such as system messages, user prompts, and data. As a result, lower-priority user prompts may override more critical system instructions, including safety protocols. Existing approaches to achieving instruction hierarchy, such as delimiters and instruction-based training, do not address this issue at the architectural level. We introduce the Instructional Segment Embedding (ISE) technique, inspired by BERT, to modern large language models, which embeds instruction priority information directly into the model. This approach enables models to explicitly differentiate and prioritize various instruction types, significantly improving safety against malicious prompts that attempt to override priority rules. Our experiments on the Structured Query and Instruction Hierarchy benchmarks demonstrate an average robust accuracy increase of up to 15.75% and 18.68%, respectively. Furthermore, we observe an improvement in instruction-following capability of up to 4.1% evaluated on AlpacaEval. The quadratic traveling salesperson problem (QTSP) is a generalization of the traveling salesperson problem, in which all triples of consecutive customers in a tour determine the travel cost. We propose compact optimization models for QTSP in mixed-integer quadratic programming (MIQP), mixed-integer linear programming (MILP), constraint programming (CP), and domain-independent dynamic programming (DIDP). Our research presents a new approach for forecasting the synchronization of stock prices using machine learning and non-linear time-series analysis. To capture the complex non-linear relationships between stock prices, we utilize recurrence plots (RP) and cross-recurrence quantification analysis (CRQA). By transforming Cross Recurrence Plot (CRP) data into a time-series format, we enable the use of Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks for predicting stock price synchronization through both regression and classification. We apply this methodology to a dataset of 20 highly capitalized stocks from the Indian market over a 21-year period. The findings reveal that our approach can predict stock price synchronization, with an accuracy of 0.98 and F1 score of 0.83 offering valuable insights for developing effective trading strategies and risk management tools., Comment: 24 Pages, 7 Figures

In this study, we tackle the challenge of limited labeled data for low-resource languages in ASR, focusing on Hindi. Specifically, we explore pseudo-labeling, by proposing a generic framework combining multiple ideas from existing works. Our framework integrates multiple base models for transcription and evaluators for assessing audio-transcript pairs, resulting in robust pseudo-labeling for low resource languages. We validate our approach with a new benchmark, IndicYT, comprising diverse YouTube audio files from multiple content categories. Our findings show that augmenting pseudo labeled data from YouTube with existing training data leads to significant performance improvements on IndicYT, without affecting performance on out-of-domain benchmarks, demonstrating the efficacy of pseudo-labeled data in enhancing ASR capabilities for low-resource languages. The benchmark, code and models developed as a part of this work will be made publicly available.

In the context of increasingly complex environmental challenges, effective pollution control mechanisms are crucial. By extending the state of the art auction mechanisms, we aim to develop an efficient approach for allocating pollution abatement resources in a multi-pollutant setting with pollutants affecting each other's reduction costs. We modify the Combinatorial Multi-Round Ascending Auction for the auction of escape permits of pollutants with co-dependent reduction processes, specifically, greenhouse gas emissions and nutrient runoff in Finnish agriculture. We show the significant advantages of this mechanism in pollution control through experiments on the bid prices and amount of escape permits sold in multiple auction simulations.

Synthetic data is becoming increasingly integral in data-scarce fields such as medical imaging, serving as a substitute for real data. However, its inherent statistical characteristics can significantly impact downstream tasks, potentially compromising deployment performance. In this study, we empirically investigate this issue and uncover a critical phenomenon: downstream neural networks often exploit spurious distinctions between real and synthetic data when there is a strong correlation between the data source and the task label. This exploitation manifests as \textit{simplicity bias}, where models overly rely on superficial features rather than genuine task-related complexities. Through principled experiments, we demonstrate that the source of data (real vs.\ synthetic) can introduce spurious correlating factors leading to poor performance during deployment when the correlation is absent. We first demonstrate this vulnerability on a digit classification task, where the model spuriously utilizes the source of data instead of the digit to provide an inference. We provide further evidence of this phenomenon in a medical imaging problem related to cardiac view classification in echocardiograms, particularly distinguishing between 2-chamber and 4-chamber views. Given the increasing role of utilizing synthetic datasets, we hope that our experiments serve as effective guidelines for the utilization of synthetic datasets in model training.

This paper describes the extensive Wind Tunnel (WT) linear cascade testing campaign carried out on a constant section turbine blade developed for low subsonic applications. Comprehensive experimental program was designed to determine the aerodynamic behaviour of this blade under a wide range of varying geometrical like Pitch to Chord Ratio, Stagger Angle and Aerodynamic like Reynolds Roughness, Mach number, Incidence angle conditions. In addition to the classical Two-Dimensional (2D) measurements, targeted Three-Dimensional (3D) surveys have been performed to complement the 2D results, allowing to draw supplementary conclusions as to the behaviour of the considered blade in three-dimensions. The performed experiments predominantly covered the transitional and beginning of a fully turbulent flow regime (maximum Re is 2.5 million). Post processing of experimental results were done in view of exploitation and judgment of some key aerodynamic aspects; parameters such as profile section load distribution, loss coefficient and flow deviation angle. Alongside with confirmation of the design targets, a parallel goal pursued in the current WT testing, was to get a more accurate idea as to the predictive capabilities of the employed CFD tools (CFX and MISES) under the basic flow condition generated in the WT. The aim was to get a global picture, as to the level of agreement that can be reached by the used design tools while accounting for the afore-mentioned design, operational variables. The obtained measurement results clearly indicated the success of the design in achieving the pre-set targets. Advancements in Large Language Models (LLMs) have significantly enhanced instruction-following capabilities. However, most Instruction Fine-Tuning (IFT) datasets are predominantly in English, limiting model performance in other languages. Traditional methods for creating multilingual IFT datasets such as translating existing English IFT datasets or converting existing NLP datasets into IFT datasets by templating, struggle to capture linguistic nuances and ensure prompt (instruction) diversity. To address this issue, we propose a novel method for collecting multilingual IFT datasets that preserves linguistic naturalness and ensures prompt diversity. This approach leverages English-focused LLMs, monolingual corpora, and a scoring function to create high-quality, diversified IFT datasets in multiple languages. Experiments demonstrate that LLMs finetuned using these IFT datasets show notable improvements in both generative and discriminative tasks, indicating enhanced language comprehension by LLMs in non-English contexts. Specifically, on the multilingual summarization task, LLMs using our IFT dataset achieved 17.57% and 15.23% improvements over LLMs fine-tuned with translation-based and template-based datasets, respectively.

Reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF) is a promising solution to align large language models (LLMs) more closely with human values. Off-policy preference optimization, where the preference data is obtained from other models, is widely adopted due to its cost efficiency and scalability. However, off-policy preference optimization often suffers from a distributional gap between the policy used for data collection and the target policy, leading to suboptimal optimization. In this paper, we propose a novel strategy to mitigate this problem by simulating on-policy learning with off-policy preference data. Our Weighted Preference Optimization (WPO) method adapts off-policy data to resemble on-policy data more closely by reweighting preference pairs according to their probability under the current policy. This method not only addresses the distributional gap problem but also enhances the optimization process without incurring additional costs. We validate our method on instruction following benchmarks including Alpaca Eval 2 and MT-bench. WPO not only outperforms Direct Preference Optimization (DPO) by up to 5.6% on Alpaca Eval 2 but also establishes a remarkable length-controlled winning rate against GPT-4-turbo of 76.7% based on Gemma-2-9b-it. The intrinsic symmetries of physical systems have been employed to reduce the number of degrees of freedom of systems, thereby simplifying computations. In this work, we investigate the properties of $\mathcal{M}SU(2^N)$, $\mathcal{M}$-invariant subspaces of the special unitary Lie group $SU(2^N)$ acting on $N$ qubits, for some $\mathcal{M}\subseteq M_{2^N}(\mathbb{C})$. We demonstrate that for certain choices of $\mathcal{M}$, the subset $\mathcal{M}SU(2^N)$ inherits many topological and group properties from $SU(2^N)$. We then present a combinatorial method for computing the dimension of such subspaces when $\mathcal{M}$ is a representation of a permutation group acting on qubits $(GSU(2^N))$, or a Hamiltonian $(H^{(N)}SU(2^N))$. The Kronecker product of $\mathfrak{su}(2)$ matrices is employed to construct the Lie algebras associated with different permutation-invariant groups $GSU(2^N)$. Large Language Models (LLMs) are a powerful technology that augment human skill to create new opportunities, akin to the development of steam engines and the internet. However, LLMs come with a high cost. They require significant computing resources and energy to train and serve. Inequity in their control and access has led to concentration of ownership and power to a small collection of corporations. In our study, we collect training and inference requirements for various LLMs. We then analyze the economic strengths of nations and organizations in the context of developing and serving these models. Additionally, we also look at whether individuals around the world can access and use this emerging technology. We compare and contrast these groups to show that these technologies are monopolized by a surprisingly few entities. Until recently, search engines were the predominant method for people to access online information. The recent emergence of large language models (LLMs) has given machines new capabilities such as the ability to generate new digital artifacts like text, images, code etc., resulting in a new tool, a generative search engine, which combines the capabilities of LLMs with a traditional search engine. Through the empirical analysis of Bing Copilot (Bing Chat), one of the first publicly available generative search engines, we analyze the types and complexity of tasks that people use Bing Copilot for compared to Bing Search.
