A flow-injection UV spectrophotometric method for the determination of ibuprofen in tablets was developed. The proposed method was achieved by using a flow cell which was located in a UV spectrophotometer and a peristaltic pump helped maintaining the carrier solvent, 0.1 M NaOH. During the study, flow rate, loop volume and the number of injections per hour were 15 mL/min, 193 µL and 100, respectively. The analytical signal of ibuprofen was linear in the concentration range of 400-1200 µg/mL. The detection limit and limit of quantification were determined as 27 and 91 µg/mL, respectively. Results for the determination of ibuprofen in tablets, 600 ± 2 mg/tablet (mean ± SD), were in good agreement with the labeled quantities, 600 mg/tablet. A relatively high recovery value, 100.4 ± 0.6%, proves the accuracy of the proposed method. The spectrophotometric method and reference HPLC method were shown to be comparable when Student's f-test and Fisher test were applied to both methods. In addition, a fourth order derivative UV spectrophotometric method (at 268.8 nm and n = 9) for the determination of ibuprofen and a first order (at 271 nm and n = 1) derivative UV spectrophotometric method for the determination of paraben in pediatric syrups were developed. Recovery values for the determination of ibuprofen and paraben were 102.4 ± 1.1% and 100.2 ± 2.3%, respectively. Background: There are few data on the effects of anesthesia and cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) on perioperative renal function in children with cyanotic congenital heart disease undergoing open heart surgery. This study aims to investigate the perioperative renal function in cyanotic versus acyanotic children undergoing sevoflurane anesthesia for open heart surgery. Methods: After receiving ethical committee approval, 12 acyanotic patients (preoperative oxygen saturation: SaO2 > 85%%) and 12 cyanotic children (SaO2 < 85%%) were included. Sevoflurane was administered at concentration levels of 2%% before CPB and 1-2%% during CPB after standard anesthesia induction. Inorganic fluoride, electrolytes, creatinine, urea nitrogen in serum and urine samples, and N-acetyl-β- d-glucosaminidase (NAG) in urine samples were measured before induction, before CPB, during CPB, after CPB, at the end of surgery, and at 24th h postoperatively. Results: The levels of serum uric acid levels were higher in the cyanotic group ( p < 0.05). There were no differences in the levels of serum creatinine and urine creatinine, urea nitrogen, and electrolytes between the two groups. Serum inorganic fluoride levels were always higher in the acyanotic group than in the cyanotic group, but these differences between the groups reached statistical significance at two measurement times (before CPB and end of surgery) ( p < 0.05). Urinary inorganic fluoride levels increased with time in both groups. Although urinary NAG increased significantly after the CPB in the cyanotic group, the differences between the two groups did not reach statistical significance. Conclusions: We have concluded that renal function was not affected during open heart surgery with sevoflurane anesthesia, in both cyanotic and acyanotic children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
