The mantle’s compositional structure reflects the thermochemical evolution of Earth. Yet, even the radial average composition of the mantle remains debated. Here, we analyze a global dataset of shear and compressional waves reflecting off the 410- and 660-km discontinuities that is 10 times larger than any previous studies. Our array analysis retrieves globally averaged amplitude-distance trends in SS and PP precursor reflectivity from which we infer relative wavespeed and density contrasts and associated mantle composition. Our results are best matched by a basalt-enriched mantle transition zone, with higher basalt fractions near 660 (~40%) than 410 (~18–31%). These are consistent with mantle-convection/plate-recycling simulations, which predict that basaltic crust accumulates in the mantle transition zone, with basalt fractions peaking near the 660. Basalt segregation in the mantle transition zone also implies that the overall mantle is more silica enriched than the often-assumed pyrolitic mantle reference composition.

The eastern Mediterranean hosts extensional, strike-slip, and collision tectonics above a set of fragmenting subducting slabs. Widespread Miocene-Recent volcanism and ~2km uplift has been attributed to mantle processes such as delamination, dripping and/or slab tearing/break-off. We investigate this region using broadband seismology: mantle tomographic imaging (Kounoudis et al., 2020), SKS splitting analysis of seismic anisotropy (Merry et al., 2021), and receiver function study of crustal structure (Ogden & Bastow, 2021). Anisotropy and crustal structure are more spatially variable than recognised previously, but variations correspond well with tomographically-imaged mantle structure. Moho depth correlates poorly with elevation, suggesting crustal thickness variations alone do not explain Anatolian topography: a mantle contribution, particularly in central and eastern Anatolia, is needed too. Lithospheric anisotropy beneath the North Anatolian Fault reveals a mantle shear zone deforming coherently with the surface, while backazimuthal variations in splitting parameters indicate fault-related lithospheric deformation. Anisotropic fast directions are either fault-parallel or intermediate between the principle extensional strain rate axis and fault strike, diagnostic of a relatively low-strained transcurrent mantle shear zone.

The subduction of positively buoyant features has been suggested to cause flat or shallow dipping slabs, the formation of cusps in trench geometry and periods of reduction or full cessation of arc magmatism. Additionally, recent earthquake data indicates that the subduction of the Hikurangi plateau near New Zealand causes a rotation of intraplate stresses. In this study, we present a series of multi-material 3-D simulations of free subduction to investigate how subduction of buoyant elongated features, or ridges, impact downgoing plate velocities, trench motions, slab morphology and intraplate stress regime. We examine how these parameters are affected by the age of the subducting plate and the relative buoyancy and position of the buoyant ridge. We find that buoyant ridges change slab sinking and trench retreat rates and locally rotate intraplate stresses. These, in turn, modify the evolution of slab morphology at depth and trench shape at the surface, as trench retreat is reduced, or switches to trench advance, where the ridge subducts. These effects depend strongly on downgoing plate age: on young and weak plates, the change in trench shape is more localised than on old and strong plates. We observe slab shallowing around the ridge only in young plates, while the stronger pull by the more negatively buoyant old plates causes slab steepening near the buoyant ridge. Buoyant ridges on old plates which are located near stagnating or advancing regions, typical in wide slabs, modify trench behaviour more strongly than ridges in other regions of the trench. Bending-related intraplate earthquakes are more likely in older plates where higher stress is accumulated and the rotation due to the buoyant ridge is more widespread than for younger plates. The combined effects of buoyant feature location, subducting plate age and overriding plate properties can result in a range of responses: from mainly trench deformation, through local slab shallowing, to the formation of a flat slab, a variation in expressions also observed on Earth.

The most common way to estimate the porosity of the mature oceanic crust, and hence its contribution to geochemical exchange, is from the inversion of active source seismic data. Previous studies have suggested that hydrothermal activity effectively ceases in crust older than 10 Ma. This is based on observations that the seismic velocity of the uppermost crust increases rapidly within 10 Ma but changes little beyond that. The velocity increase is widely explained by reduced porosity and permeability due to hydrothermal mineral precipitation and fracture closure due to sediment blanketing. However, a potential problem with conventional wide-angle Ocean Bottom Seismometer (OBS) modelling over mature oceanic crust is the imaging geometry, where the water wave obscures the onset of the crustal refractions for tomographic inversion needed to resolve the velocity of the upper hundred meters of the igneous crust. To investigate the issue of imaging geometry and accurately extract the physical properties of the upper crust, we applied downward continuation on conventional OBS records across 65 Ma Atlantic Ocean crust. The method eliminates the effect of the thick water column by locating shots on a datum close to the seabed. This enables refractions from the uppermost 100-200 m of igneous crust to be viewed as first arrivals, and hence significantly improves the accuracy of the velocity inversion of the upper layers. Using travel time picks from downward continued and original OBS records, we applied tomographic inversion with three starting models taken from the latest compilation of crustal velocity-depth (VZ) models. The three models have a velocity variation of ±10% for the uppermost crust, representing a low, mean, and high bound for crustal VZ relations. By comparing the results, we show that with downward continued data the inverted velocity of the uppermost crust is less dependent on the starting model and converges to the same trend closer to the low bound of previous VZ relations. The average velocity of the uppermost crust inverted with downward continued data is ~0.3 km/s lower than that inverted with original data. These results would translate into a porosity of 14%, compared to 10% for the non-downward continued analysis. We also resolve stronger along-strike variation in the inverted velocity of the uppermost crust (4.2 km/s to 4.8 km/s) using downward continued data compared to original data, which may correspond to porosity as large as 18%, much higher than previously suggested porosity of 8 % for mature oceanic crust. This implies that open cracks may be still present and thick sediments may seal hydrologically but not close fractures that affect the seismic refraction data. Moreover, our results reconcile with the recent work in the South Atlantic performed with full-waveform inversion (FWI) on streamer data. Therefore, downward continuation, also FWI may need to be incorporated into the workflow of conventional wide-angle OBS modelling, especially for mature oceanic crust. This will improve the resolution and accuracy of the physical properties of the uppermost crust and may shed new light on its evolution and role in off-axis hydrothermal circulation and seawater chemistry.

It has long been recognised that the shape of subduction zones is influenced by Earth’s sphericity, but the effects of sphericity are regularly neglected in numerical and laboratory studies that examine the factors controlling subduction dynamics: most existing studies have been executed in a Cartesian domain, with the small number of simulations undertaken in a spherical shell incorporating plates with an oversimplified rheology, limiting their applicability. There are therefore many outstanding questions relating to the key controls on the dynamics of subduction. For example, do predictions from Cartesian subduction models hold true in a spherical geometry? When combined, how do subducting plate age and width influence the dynamics of subducting slabs, and associated trench shape? How do relic slabs in the mantle feedback on the dynamics of subduction? These questions are of great importance to understanding the evolution of Earth's subduction systems but remain under explored.In this presentation, we will target these questions through a systematic geodynamic modelling effort, by examining simulations of multi-material free-subduction of a visco-plastic slab in a 3-D spherical shell domain. We will first highlight the limitation(s) of Cartesian models, due to two irreconcilable differences with the spherical domain: (i) the presence of sidewall boundaries in Cartesian models, which modify the flow regime; and (ii) the reduction of space with depth in spherical shells, alongside the radial gravity direction, the impact of which cannot be captured in Cartesian domains, especially for subduction zones exceeding 2400 km in width. We will then demonstrate how slab age (approximated by co-varying thickness and density) and slab width affect the evolution of subducting slabs, using spherical subduction simulations, showing that: (i) as subducting plate age increases, slabs retreat more and subduct at a shallower dip angle, due to increased bending resistance and sinking rates; (ii) wider slabs can develop along-strike variations in trench curvature due to toroidal flow at slab edges, trending toward a `W'-shaped trench with increasing slab width, and (iii) the width effect is strongly modulated by slab age, as age controls the slab's tendency to retreat. Finally, we will show the diverse range of ways in which remnant slabs in the mantle impact on subduction dynamics and the evolution of subduction systems.

Uncertainty in present-day glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) rates represents at least 44% of the total gravity-based ice mass balance signal over Antarctica. Meanwhile, physical couplings between solid Earth, sea level and ice dynamics enhance the dependency of the spatiotemporally varying GIA signal on three-dimensional variations in mantle rheology. Improved knowledge of thermomechanical mantle structure is therefore required to refine estimates of current and projected ice mass balance. Here, we present a Bayesian inverse method for self-consistently mapping shear-wave velocities from high-resolution adjoint tomography into thermomechanical structure using calibrated parameterisations of anelasticity at seismic frequency. We constrain the model using regional geophysical data sets containing information on upper mantle temperature, attenuation and viscosity structure. Our treatment allows formal quantification of parameter covariances, and naturally permits propagation of material parameter uncertainties into thermomechanical structure estimates. We find that uncertainty in steady-state viscosity structure at 150 km depth can be reduced by 4-5 orders of magnitude compared with a forward-modelling approach neglecting covariance between viscoelastic parameters. By accounting for the dependence of viscosity on loading timescale, we find good agreement between our estimates of mantle viscosity beneath West Antarctica, and those derived from satellite GPS. Direct access to temperature structure allows us to estimate lateral variations in lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary (LAB) depth, geothermal heat flow (GHF), and associated uncertainties. We find evidence for shallow LAB depths (63 ± 13 km), and high GHF (76 ± 7 mW m^-2) beneath West Antarctica, suggesting a highly dynamic response to ice mass loss.

Volatiles expelled from subducted plates melt the overlying warm mantle, feeding arc volcanism. However, debates continue over the factors controlling melt generation and transport and how these determine the placement of volcanoes. To broaden our synoptic view of these fundamental mantle wedge processes, we image seismic attenuation beneath the Lesser Antilles arc, an end-member system that slowly subducts old, tectonised lithosphere. Punctuated anomalies with high ratios of bulk-to-shear attenuation (Qκ-1/Qµ-1 > 0.6) and VP/VS (>1.83) lie 40 km above the slab, representing expelled fluids that are retained in a cold boundary layer, transporting fluids towards the back-arc. The strongest attenuation (1000/QS~20), characterising melt in warm mantle, lies beneath the back-arc, revealing how back-arc mantle feeds arc volcanoes. Melt ponds under the upper plate and percolates toward the arc along structures from earlier back-arc spreading, demonstrating how slab dehydration, upper plate properties, past tectonics, and resulting melt pathways, collectively condition volcanism.

Earth’s mantle transition zone (MTZ) is characterized by several sharp increases in seismic wave speed between ~300 km and ~850 km depth. These seismic discontinuities are generally attributed to solid-state phase transitions that lead to density and viscosity increases, which could cause a barrier to convection by segregating thermally and chemically heterogeneous material. This Review discusses insights into the role of MTZ compositional heterogeneity in mantle convection, derived from the joint constraints of MTZ discontinuity-reflected, discontinuity-refracted and discontinuity-transmitted seismic waves and thermodynamic and convection models. Growing seismic data sets and advances in analysis techniques show that the topography of these discontinuities mainly reflects variations in mantle temperature and, hence, present-day mantle flow. However, the discordant behaviour of the 410 km and 660 km discontinuities shows that the thermal structure is not vertically coherent across the MTZ in many areas, indicating that the MTZ delays the convective transport of cold material from above and hot material from below. Variable reflectivity of the MTZ discontinuity provides evidence of lateral and vertical heterogeneity in major element chemistry and volatile content. Seismic results are consistent with whole-mantle mechanical mixing of tectonic plates, with segregated material accumulating in the MTZ over multiple mantle convection cycles.

The eastern Mediterranean hosts, within the span of a few hundred kilometres, extensional, strike-slip, and collision tectonics above a set of fragmenting subducting slabs. Widespread Miocene-Recent volcanism and ~2km uplift has been attributed to mantle processes such as delamination, dripping and/or slab tearing/break-off. We investigate this complex region using a variety of broadband seismological techniques, with new P- and S-wave tomographic images in Kounoudis et al. (2020), seismic anisotropy constrained via an updated dataset of SKS shear-wave splitting observations in Merry et al. (2021), and crustal structure imaged by quality-controlled H-κ stacking of receiver functions in Ogden & Bastow (2021). Overall, seismic anisotropy and crustal structure are more spatially variable than previously recognised, and such variations correspond well with variations in mantle structure shown by the tomography. In general, Moho depth is poorly correlated with elevation, suggesting crustal thickness variations do not fully explain topographic differences, and residual topography calculations indicate the requirement for a mantle contribution to Anatolian Plateau uplift. Evidence for such a contribution exists in central Anatolia, where an imaged horizontal tear in the Cyprus slab spatially corresponds with volcanism, a residual topographic high, and a region of reduced splitting delay times and nulls, all consistent with upwelling of asthenospheric material through the tear. Anisotropic fast directions are consistent with flow through the imaged gap between the Cyprus and Aegean slabs, again correlating roughly with both volcanism and high residual topography. Slow uppermost‐mantle wave speeds below active volcanoes in eastern Anatolia, and ratios of P-to-S wave relative traveltimes, indicate a thin lithosphere and melt contributions. Elsewhere, there is more evidence for slab processes controlling mantle flow, with anisotropic fast directions diverted at the edges of imaged slabs and consistent with flow towards the retreating Hellenic trench in the Aegean. The North Anatolian Fault is revealed to be a deep, plate-scale structure: whilst there are no clear changes in Moho depth across the fault, deep velocity contrasts suggest a 40­-60km decrease in lithospheric thickness from the Precambrian lithosphere north of the fault to a thinned Anatolian lithosphere in the south. Moreover, short-length-scale variations in anisotropy and backazimuthal variations in splitting parameters at the fault indicate fault-related lithospheric deformation, with seismic fast directions either fault-parallel or intermediate between the principle extensional strain rate axis and fault strike, diagnostic of a relatively low-strained transcurrent mantle shear zone. Even though the Caribbean region is constantly struck by the impact of geological hazards, the details of the Caribbean plate's evolution are still not completely understood. This interdisciplinary study combines and jointly interprets seismic tomography data with trench positions derived from plate reconstruction which constrains some of the most important events governing the evolution of the Caribbean plate. Our new teleseismic P-wave tomography model of the upper mantle beneath the Caribbean includes manually processed and analysed data from 32 ocean-bottom seismometers installed for 16 months during the VoiLA experiment as well as recordings from 192 permanent and temporary land stations. Reconstruction tests show improved resolution compared to previous models and a sufficient recovery of a synthetic anomaly assimilating the Caribbean slab. Based on reconstructed trench positions we attribute slab fragments residing in depths of 700-1200km to 90–115 Myr old westward subduction along the Great Arc of the Caribbean (GAC) prior to Caribbean Large Igneous Province volcanism, rather than to eastward dipping Farallon subduction. In the mantle transition zone, the imaged slab coincides with predicted trench positions from 50-70 Ma with a slab window approximately at the location of the subducted Proto-Caribbean spreading ridge.Along the otherwise continous slab in the shallow upper mantle from Hispanola to Grenada several tears are interpreted as ruptures along fault zones in the Proto-Caribbean crust as well as the subducted extinct Proto-Caribbean spreading ridge.

The Globally Adaptive Scaling Within Adaptive Metropolis (GASWAM) modification of the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm is utilised to allow efficient exploration of the multi-dimensional parameter space. Our treatment allows formal quantification of parameter covariances, and naturally permits us to propagate uncertainties in material parameters into uncertainty in thermomechanical structure.We find that it is possible to improve agreement on steady state viscosity structure between tomographic models by approximately 30%, and reduce its uncertainty by an order of magnitude as compared to a forward-modelling approach. Direct access to temperature structure allows us to estimate lateral variations in lithospheric thickness, geothermal heat flow, and their associated uncertainties.

Volatiles play a pivotal role in subduction zones dynamics, associated geological hazards and mineralization, yet their pathways remain partially understood. The Lesser Antilles subduction zone can yield insights to volatile recycling as a global end-member, where old oceanic lithosphere formed by slow spreading slowly subducts. Here we use seismograms from local earthquakes recorded by a temporary deployment of ocean-bottom seismometers in the fore- and back-arc during the VoiLA (Volatile Recycling in the Lesser Antilles) experiment to characterize the 3-D properties of the slab, back-arc and mantle wedge in the north-central Lesser Antilles subduction zone. Along the top of the slab, defined by the underlying Wadati-Benioff seismicity, we find low P-wave velocity extending to 130–150 km depth, deeper than expected for magmatic oceanic crust. The deep low velocities together with high Vp/Vs at 60–80 km and 120–150 km depth are consistent with a significantly tectonised and serpentinised slab top, as expected for lithosphere formed by slow spreading. The most prominent high Vp/Vs anomalies in the slab correlates with two projected fracture zones and the obliquely subducting boundary between Proto-Caribbean and Equatorial Atlantic lithosphere, indicating these structures enhance hydration of the oceanic lithosphere and subsequent dehydration when subducted. Deep dehydration of slab mantle serpentinite is evidenced by high Vp/Vs anomalies in the back-arc offshore Guadeloupe and Dominica. Right above the slab, the asthenospheric mantle wedge is imaged beneath the back-arc as high Vp/Vs and moderate Vp feature, indicative for fluids rising from the slab through the overlaying cold boundary layer. The fluids might be dragged down with the subducting slab before rising upwards to induce melting further to the west. The variation in seismic properties along the subducting slab and in the back-arc mantle wedge shows that the changes in hydration of the incoming plate govern the dehydration processes at depth. The highest Vp/Vs anomaly in the back-arc west of Dominica at depth greater than 120 km, together with the anomaly at 60–80 km depth on the slab east of the island, appear to track the source and path of excess volatiles that may explain the relatively high magmatic output observed on the north-central islands of the Lesser Antilles arc.

Plate tectonics requires the formation of plate boundaries. Particularly important is the enigmatic initiation of subduction: the sliding of one plate below the other, and the primary driver of plate tectonics. A continuous, in situ record of subduction initiation was recovered by the International Ocean Discovery Program Expedition 352, which drilled a segment of the fore-arc of the Izu-Bonin-Mariana subduction system, revealing a distinct magmatic progression with a rapid timescale (approximately 1 million years). Here, using numerical models, we demonstrate that these observations cannot be produced by previously proposed horizontal external forcing. Instead a geodynamic evolution that is dominated by internal, vertical forces produces both the temporal and spatial distribution of magmatic products, and progresses to self-sustained subduction. Such a primarily internally driven initiation event is necessarily whole-plate scale and the rock sequence generated (also found along the Tethyan margin) may be considered as a smoking gun for this type of event., The magmatic progression produced during the initiation of the Izu-Bonin-Marianas subduction zone took place rapidly over 1 million years, but it has been unclear why. Here, using numerical models, the authors show that subduction initiation was dominated by vertical forces, internal to the system itself, progressing to self-sustained subduction.

International audience; Several seismic and numerical studies proposed that below, some hotspots upper-mantle plumelets rise from a thermal boundary layer below 660 km depth, fed by a deeper plume source. We recently found tomographic evidence of multiple upper-mantle upwellings, spaced by several 100 km, rising through the transition zone below the northern East African Rift. To better test this interpretation, we run 3-D numerical simulations of mantle convection for Newtonian and non-Newtonian rheologies, for both thermal instabilities rising from a lower boundary layer, and the destabilization of a thermal anomaly placed at the base of the box (700-800 km depth). The thermal structures are converted to seismic velocities using a thermodynamic approach. Resolution tests are then conducted for the same P and S data distribution and inversion parameters as our traveltime tomography. The Rayleigh Taylor models predict simultaneous plumelets in different stages of evolution rising from a hot layer located below the transition zone, resulting in seismic structure that looks more complex than the simple vertical cylinders that are often anticipated. From the wide selection of models tested, we find that the destabilization of a 200 degrees C, 100 km thick thermal anomaly with a non-Newtonian rheology, most closely matches the magnitude and the spatial and temporal distribution of the anomalies below the rift. Finally, we find that for reasonable upper-mantle viscosities, the synthetic plume structures are similar in scale and shape to the actual low-velocity anomalies, providing further support for the existence of upper-mantle plumelets below the northern East African Rift.

Induced earthquake sequences are typically interpreted through causal triggering mechanisms. However, studies of causality rarely consider large regions and why some regions experiencing similar anthropogenic activities remain largely aseismic. Therefore, it can be difficult to forecast seismic hazard at a regional scale. In contrast, multivariate statistical methods allow us to find the combinations of factors that correlate best with seismicity, which can help form the basis of hypotheses that can be subsequently tested with physical models. Such a statistical approach is particularly important for large regions with newly-emergent seismicity comprising multiple distinct clusters and multi-faceted industrial operations. Recent induced seismicity in the Permian Basin provides an excellent test-bed for multivariate statistical analyses because the main causal industrial and geological factors driving earthquakes in the region remain highly debated. Here, we use logistic regression to retrospectively predict the spatial variation of seismicity across the western Permian Basin. We reproduce the broad distribution of seismicity using a combination of both industrial and geological factors. Our model shows that hydraulic fracturing and/or hydrocarbon production from the Wolfcamp Shale is the strongest predictor of seismicity, although the physical triggering process is unclear due to uncertain earthquake depths. We also find that the proximity to neotectonic faults west of the Delaware Basin is another important factor that contributes to induced seismicity. This higher tectonic stressing, together with a poor correlation between seismicity and large-volume deep salt-water disposal wells indicates a very different mechanism of induced seismicity compared to that in Oklahoma.

The crust and upper mantle structure of the Greater and Lesser Antilles Arc provides insights into key subduction zone processes in a unique region of slow convergence of old slow-spreading oceanic lithosphere. We use ambient noise tomography gathered from island broadband seismic stations and the temporary ocean bottom seismometer network installed as part of the Volatile Recycling in the Lesser Antilles experiment to map crustal and upper mantle shear-wave velocity of the eastern Greater Antilles and the Lesser Antilles Arc. Taking the depth to the 2.0 km/s contour as a proxy, we find sediment thickness up to 15 km in the south in the Grenada and Tobago basins and thinner sediments near the arc and to the north. We observe thicker crust, based on the depth to the 4.0 km/s velocity contour, beneath the arc platforms with the greatest crustal thickness of around 30 km, likely related to crustal addition from arc volcanism through time. There are distinct low velocity zones (4.2–4.4 km/s) in the mantle wedge (30–50 km depth), beneath the Mona Passage, Guadeloupe-Martinique, and the Grenadines. The Mona passage mantle anomaly may be related to ongoing extension there, while the Guadeloupe-Martinique and Grenadine anomalies are likely related to fluid flux, upwelling, and/or partial melt related to nearby slab features. The location of the Guadeloupe-Martinique anomaly is slightly to the south of the obliquely subducted fracture zones. This feature could be explained by either three-dimensional mantle flow, a gap in the slab, variable slab hydration, and/or melt dynamics including ponding and interactions with the upper plate.

Continental arc systems often show evidence of large-scale migration both toward and away from the incoming plate. In oceanic arc systems, however, while slab roll-back and the associated processes of backarc spreading and arc migration toward the incoming plate are commonplace, arc migration away from the incoming plate is rarely observed. We present a new compilation of marine magnetic anomaly and seismic data in order to propose a new tectonic model for the eastern Caribbean region that includes arc migration in both directions. We synthesized new evidence to show two phases of backarc spreading and eastward arc migration toward the incoming Atlantic. A third and final phase of arc migration to the west subdivided the earlier backarc basin on either side of the present-day Lesser Antilles arc. This is the first example of regional multidirectional arc migration in an intra-oceanic setting, and it has implications for along-arc structural and geochemical variations. The back and forth arc migrations were probably due to the constraints imposed by the neighboring American plates on this isolated subduction system, rather than variations in subducting slab buoyancy.

Subducting slabs are an important driver of plate motions, yet the force balance governing subduction dynamics remains incompletely understood. Basal drag has been proposed to be a minor contributor to subduction forcing, because of the lack of correlation between plate size and velocity in observed and reconstructed plate motions. Furthermore, in single subduction system models, low basal drag, associated with a low ratio of asthenospheric to lithospheric viscosity, leads to subduction behaviour most consistent with the observation that trench migration velocities are generally low compared to convergence velocities. By contrast, analytical calculations and global mantle flow models indicate basal drag can be substantial. In this study, we revisit this problem by examining the drag at the base of the lithosphere, for a single subduction system, in 2D models with a free trench and composite non-linear rheology. We compare the behaviour of short and long plates for a range of asthenospheric and lithospheric rheologies. We reproduce results from previous modelling studies, including low ratios of trench over plate motions. However, we also find that any combination of asthenosphere and lithosphere viscosity that produces Earth-like subduction behaviour leads to a correlation of velocities with plate size, due to the role of basal drag. By examining Cenozoic plate motion reconstructions, we find that slab age and plate size are positively correlated: higher slab pull for older plates tends to be offset by higher basal drag below these larger plates. This, in part, explains the lack of plate velocity-size correlation in observations, despite the important role of basal drag in the subduction force-balance.

The thermal and compositional structure of lithospheric keels underlying cratons, which are stable continental cores formed during the Precambrian, is still an enigma. Mapping lithospheric temperatures and compositional heterogeneities is essential to better understand geodynamic processes that control craton formation and evolution. Here we investigate the northeastern part of North America which comprises the Superior Craton, the largest Archean craton in the world, and surrounding Proterozoic belts. We model Rayleigh-wave dispersion curves from a previous study, which were regionalised based on cluster analysis. Next, we perform a grid search for sub-crustal thermal and compositional structures that are consistent with the average dispersion curve for each cluster. We apply constraints on crustal structure and use thermodynamic methods to map thermo-compositional structures into seismic velocity. In agreement with previous studies, most regions require concentrations of metasomatic minerals over certain depth intervals to fit the seismic profiles. Our results further require vertical as well as lateral variations in compositional and thermal structures, which appear to reflect different stages of formation and modification of the lithosphere below the region, with distinct structures found under Archean cores, Archean/Paleoproterozoic collision belts, mid-late Proterozoic collision belts, and zones affected by rifting.

We present a high‐resolution 2‐D P‐wave velocity model from a 225‐km‐long active seismic profile, collected over ~60–75 Ma central Atlantic crust. The profile crosses five ridge segments separated by a transform and three nontransform offsets. All ridge discontinuities share similar primary characteristics, independent of the offset. We identify two types of crustal segment. The first displays a classic two‐layer velocity structure with a high gradient Layer 2 (~0.9 s$^{−1}$) above a lower gradient Layer 3 (0.2 s$^{−1}$). Here, PmP coincides with the 7.5 km s$^{−1}$ contour, and velocity increases to >7.8 km s$^{−1}$ within 1 km below. We interpret these segments as magmatically robust, with PmP representing a petrological boundary between crust and mantle. The second has a reduced contrast in velocity gradient between the upper and lower crust and PmP shallower than the 7.5 km s$^{−1}$ contour. We interpret these segments as tectonically dominated, with PmP representing a serpentinized (alteration) front. While velocity‐depth profiles fit within previous envelopes for slow‐spreading crust, our results suggest that such generalizations give a misleading impression of uniformity. We estimate that the two crustal styles are present in equal proportions on the floor of the Atlantic. Within two tectonically dominated segments, we make the first wide‐angle seismic identifications of buried oceanic core complexes in mature (>20 Ma) Atlantic Ocean crust. They have a ~20‐km‐wide “domal” morphology with shallow basement and increased upper crustal velocities. We interpret their midcrustal seismic velocity inversions as alteration and rock‐type assemblage contrasts across crustal‐scale detachment faults.

The origin of 3D seismic heterogeneity in Precambrian lithosphere has been enigmatic, because temperature variations in old stable shields are expected to be small and seismic sensitivity to major‐element compositional variations is limited. Previous studies indicate that metasomatic alteration may significantly affect average 1‐D structure below shields. Here, we perform a grid search for 3‐D thermo‐chemical structure, including variations in alteration, to model published Rayleigh‐wave phase velocities between 20 and 160 s for the eastern part of the Archean Superior and Canadian Proterozoic Grenville Provinces. We find that, consistent with constraints from surface heatflow and xenoliths, the lithosphere is coolest (Moho heatflow 12‐17 mW/m2) and the thermal boundary layer thickest (>250 km) in the northeastern Superior and warmest in the southeastern Grenville (Moho heatflow 20‐25 mW/m2, thermal boundary thickness 160‐200 km). Compositionally, the phase velocities for most of the Superior within our study region require little alteration, but in a few regions, fast velocities need to overlie slower velocities. These can be modelled with an eclogite layer in the mid lithosphere, consistent with active‐seismic and xenolith evidence for remnants of subducted Archean crust. The phase velocities from the Grenville Province require significant metasomatic modification to explain the relatively low velocities of the shallow lithosphere, and the required intensity of alteration is highest in parts of the Grenville associated with arc accretion. Thus, composition of the northeastern Canadian Shield appears to reflect different stages and styles of craton assembly.

The mantle transition zone (MTZ), bounded by 410 and 660 discontinuities, is a key region to understand the thermal, chemical, and dynamical evolution of the mantle. Mantle dynamics is primarily thermally driven and the topography of 410 and 660 has been widely used to infer the temperature of the MTZ. However, in a number of recent studies, we have found that properties of transition-zone discontinuities may also provide insight in the distribution of compositional heterogeneity. We will present preliminary results from a global study of PP and SS precursors using a curvelet-based seismic array processing technique, where we successfully extract P660P signals, which are traditionally difficult to observe, over a wide distance range. Comparison with thermodynamic models suggests that on a global scale, amplitude trends of SS and PP precursors from both 410 and 660 are consistent with predictions from a pyrolitic mantle transition zone. We also find that global variation in MTZ thickness has a positive correlation with velocity anomalies within the MTZ. Both of them are likely controlled by thermal anomalies, consistent with mineralogical phase transitions of the olivine system. In an application of this method to data from Hawaii however, we found evidence of compositional variations, consistent with the analysis of tomographic images below a few other hotspots. Further compositional heterogeneity linked to recent subduction has been found from a receiver-function study below the US. Results thus indicate a quite well mixed background mantle with more heterogeneity in areas of recent up-and downwelling.

The thermal and compositional structure of the lithospheric keels underlying the Precambrian cratonic cores of the continents may shed light on their evolution and long-term stability. A number of seismic studies have found significant 3D seismic heterogeneity in cratonic lithosphere, which is enigmatic because temperature variations in old shields are expected to be small and seismic sensitivity to major-element compositional variations is limited. Previous studies show that metasomatic alteration may lead to significant variations in shield velocities with depth. Here we perform a grid search for thermo-chemical structures including metasomatic compositions, to model Rayleigh-wave phase velocities between 20 and 160 s for the northeastern part of North America comprising the Superior craton, the largest Archean craton in the world, and surrounding Proterozoic belts. We find smooth variations in thermal structure that include variations in thermal thickness within the Superior and decreasing thickness towards the edges of the shield. Four types of distinct compositional structures are required to match the long-period phase velocities. The different types appear to correlate with: (i) the unaltered oldest cores of the Superior, (ii) Archean and Proterozoic lithosphere modified by rifting and plume activity, and two distinct types of subduction signatures: (iii) an Archean/Paleo-Proterozoic signature that includes a high-velocity eclogite layer in the mid-lithosphere and (iv) a post Paleo-Proterozoic signature characterised by strongly altered shallow mantle lithosphere. Thus, processes that have affected the formation and modification of cratonic lithosphere and were previously recognised in xenoliths appear to have also left large-scale imprints in seismic structure.

Plate tectonics requires the formation of plate boundaries. Particularly important is the enigmatic initiation of subduction: the sliding of one plate below the other, and the primary driver of plate tectonics. A continuous, in situ record of subduction initiation was recovered by the International Ocean Discovery Program Expedition 352, which drilled a segment of the fore-arc of the Izu-Bonin-Mariana subduction system, revealing a distinct magmatic progression with a rapid timescale (approximately 1 million years). Here, using numerical models, we demonstrate that these observations cannot be produced by previously proposed horizontal external forcing. Instead a geodynamic evolution that is dominated by internal, vertical forces produces both the temporal and spatial distribution of magmatic products, and progresses to self-sustained subduction. Such a primarily internally driven initiation event is necessarily whole-plate scale and the rock sequence generated (also found along the Tethyan margin) may be considered as a smoking gun for this type of event.

The Caribbean plate has a complex tectonic history, which makes it particularly challenging to establish the evolution of the subduction zones at its margins. Here we present a new teleseismic P-wave tomographic model under the Antillean arc that benefits from ocean-bottom seismometer data collected in our recent VoiLA (Volatile Recycling in the Lesser Antilles) project. We combine this imagery with a new plate reconstruction that we use to predict possible slab positions in the mantle today. We find that upper mantle anomalies below the eastern Caribbean correspond to a stack of material that was subducted at different trenches at different times, but ended up in a similar part of the mantle due to the large northwestward motion of the Americas. This stack comprises: in the mantle transition zone, slab fragments that were subducted between 70 and 55 Ma below the Cuban and Aves segments of the Greater Arc of the Caribbean; at 450-250 km depth, material subducted between 55 and 35 Ma below the older Lesser Antilles (including the Limestone Caribees and Virgin Islands); and above 250 km, slab from subduction between 30 and 0 Ma below the present Lesser Antilles to Hispaniola Arc. Subdued high velocity anomalies in the slab above 200 km depth coincide with where the boundary between the equatorial Atlantic and proto-Caribbean subducted, rather than as previously proposed, with the North-South American plate boundary. The different phases of subduction can be linked to changes in the age, and hence buoyancy structure, of the subducting plate.

The strongest evidence to support the classical plume hypothesis comes from seismic imaging of the mantle beneath hot spots. However, imaging results are often ambiguous and it is questionable whether narrow plume tails can be detected by present-day seismological techniques. Here we carry out synthetic tomography experiments based on spectral element method simulations of seismic waves with period T > 10 s propagating through geodynamically derived plume structures. We vary the source-receiver geometry in order to explore the conditions under which lower mantle plume tails may be detected seismically. Various changes in seismic structures across the mantle transition zone (MTZ) indicate that it may hamper thermal and chemical circulation. Here we show how thermal elevation of the postspinel phase transition at 660 km depth plus harzburgite segregation below this depth can project as narrow high-velocity anomalies in tomographic images of continuous thermochemical mantle upwellings. Model S40RTS features a narrow high-velocity anomaly of +0.8% near 660 km depth within the broad low-velocity structure beneath the Samoa hot spot. Our analyses indicate that elevation of the 660 phase boundary in a hot pyrolitic plume alone is insufficient to explain this anomaly. An additional effect of harzburgite enrichment is required and consistent with geodynamic simulations that predict compositional segregation in the MTZ, especially within thermochemical upwellings. The Samoa anomaly can be modeled with a 125–175°C excess temperature and a harzburgite enrichment below 660 of least 60% compared to a pyrolitic mantle.

Oceanic lithosphere carries volatiles, notably water, into the mantle through subduction at convergent plate boundaries. This subducted water exercises control on the production of magma, earthquakes, formation of continental crust and mineral resources. Identifying different potential fluid sources (sediments, crust and mantle lithosphere) and tracing fluids from their release to the surface has proved challenging

It is strongly debated whether the interface between the lithosphere and underlying asthenosphere is a temperature-dependent rheological transition, as expected in a thermal convection system, or additionally affected by the presence of melts and/or fluids. Previous surface wave studies of Pacific oceanic lithosphere have found that shear velocity and azimuthal anisotropy vary with seafloor crustal age as expected for a thermal control; however radial anisotropy does not. Various thermomechanical models have been proposed to explain this disparate behaviour. Nonetheless, it is unclear how robust the surface wave constraints are, and this is what we test in this study. We apply a Bayesian model space search approach to three published Pacific surface wave dispersion data sets, two phase-velocity and one combined phase- and group-velocity set, and determine various proxies for the depth of the lithosphere–asthenosphere boundary (LAB) and their uncertainties based on the velocity and radial anisotropy model distributions obtained. In their overall character and pattern with age, the velocity models from different data sets are consistent with each other, although they differ in their values of LAB depths. Uncertainties are substantial (as much as 20 km on LAB depths) and the addition of group-velocity data does not reduce them. Radial anisotropy structures differ even in pattern and display no obvious age dependence. However, given the uncertainties, we cannot exclude that radial anisotropy, azimuthal anisotropy and velocity models actually reflect compatible, age-dependent, LAB depth estimates. The velocity LAB trends are most like those expected for half-space cooling, because velocity differences persist at old ages, below the depth of common plate cooling models. Any direct signature of sub-ridge melt would be too small-scale to be resolved by these data. However, the velocity-increasing effects of dehydration and depletion due to melting below the ridge could explain why LAB proxy depths tend to a minimum of ∼60 km below young ocean floor.

Thermal structure of the lithosphere exerts a primary control on its strength and density and thereby its dynamic evolution as the outer thermal and mechanic boundary layer of the convecting mantle. This contribution focuses on continental lithosphere. We review constraints on thermal conductivity and heat production, geophysical and geochemical/petrological constraints on thermal structure of the continental lithosphere, as well as steady-state and non-steady state 1D thermal models and their applicability. Commonly used geotherm families that assume that crustal heat production contributes an approximately constant fraction of 25–40% to surface heat flow reproduce the global spread of temperatures and thermal thicknesses of the lithosphere below continents. However, we find that global variations in seismic thickness of continental lithosphere and seismically estimated variations in Moho temperature below the US are more compatible with models where upper crustal heat production is 2–3 times higher than lower crustal heat production (consistent with rock estimates) and the contribution of effective crustal heat production to thermal structure (i.e. estimated by describing thermal structure with steady-state geotherms) varies systematically from 40 to 60% in tectonically stable low surface heat flow regions to 20% or lower in higher heat flow tectonically active regions. The low effective heat production in tectonically active regions is likely partly the expression of a non-steady thermal state and advective heat transport.

The subduction of the Farallon Plate has altered the temperature and composition of the mantle transition zone (MTZ) beneath the United States. We investigate MTZ structure by mapping P‐to‐S conversions at mineralogical phase changes using USArray waveform data and theoretical seismic profiles based on experimental constraints of phase transition properties as a function of temperature and composition. The width of the MTZ varies by about 35 km over the study region, corresponding to a temperature variation of more than 300 K. The MTZ is coldest and thickest beneath the eastern United States where high shear velocity anomalies are tomographically resolved. We detect intermittent P‐to‐S conversions at depths of 520 km and 730 km. The conversions at 730‐km depth are coherent beneath the southeastern United States and are consistent with basalt enrichment of about 50%, possibly due to the emplacement of a fragment of an oceanic plateau (i.e., the Hess conjugate).

a b s t r a c t It is debated to what extent mantle plumes play a role in continental rifting and eventual break-up. Afar lies at the northern end of the largest and most active present-day continental rift, where the East African Rift forms a triple junction with the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden rifts. It has a history of plume activity yet recent studies have reached conflicting conclusions on whether a plume still contributes to current Afar tectonics. A geochemical study concluded that Afar is a mature hot rift with 80 km thick lithosphere, while seismic data have been interpreted to reflect the structure of a young, oceanic rift basin above mantle of normal temperature. We develop a self-consistent forward model of mantle flow that incorporates melt generation and retention to test whether predictions of melt chemistry, melt volume and lithosphere-asthenosphere seismic structure can be reconciled with observations. The rare- earth element composition of mafic samples at the Erta Ale, Dabbahu and Asal magmatic segments can be used as both a thermometer and chronometer of the rifting process. Low seismic velocities require a lithosphere thinned to 50 km or less. A strong positive impedance contrast at 50 to 70 km below the rift seems linked to the melt zone, but is not reproduced by isotropic seismic velocity alone. Combined, the simplest interpretation is that mantle temperature below Afar is still elevated at 1450 ◦C, rifting started around 22-23 Ma, and the lithosphere has thinned from 100 to 50 km to allow significant decompressional melting. © 2015 Published by Elsevier B.V.

It has been proposed that volcanic hotspots and the reconstructed eruption sites of large igneous provinces (LIPs) are preferentially located above the margins of two deep mantle large low shear-wave velocity provinces (LLSVPs), beneath the African continent and the Pacific Ocean. This spatial correlation has been interpreted to imply that LLSVPs represent long-lived, dense, stable thermo-chemical piles, which preferentially trigger mantle plumes at their edges and exert a strong influence on lower-mantle dynamics. Here, we re-analyse this spatial correlation, demonstrating that it is not global: it is strong for the African LLSVP, but weak for the Pacific. Moreover, Monte Carlo based statistical analyses indicate that the observed distribution of African and Pacific hotspots/reconstructed LIPs is consistent with the hypothesis that they are drawn from a sample that is uniformly distributed across the entire areal extent of each LLSVP: the stronger spatial correlation with the margin of the African LLSVP is expected as a simple consequence of its elongated geometry, where more than 75% of the LLSVP interior lies within 10° of its margin. Our results imply that the geographical distribution of hotspots and reconstructed LIPs does not indicate the extent to which chemical heterogeneity influences lower-mantle dynamics.
