We study the multi-dimensional geometry of supernova (SN) explosions by means of spectropolarimetric observations of stripped-envelope SNe, i.e., SNe without a H-rich layer. We perform spectropolarimetric observations of 2 stripped-envelope SNe, the Type Ib SN 2009jf and the Type Ic SN 2009mi. Both objects show non-zero polarization at the wavelength of the strong lines. They also show a loop in the Stokes Q-U diagram, which indicates a non-axisymmetric, three-dimensional ion distribution in the ejecta. We show that five out of six stripped-envelope SNe which have been observed spectropolarimetrically so far show such a loop. This implies that a three-dimensional geometry is common in stripped-envelope SNe. We find that stronger lines tend to show higher polarization. This effect is not related to the geometry, and must be corrected to compare the polarization of different lines or different objects. Even after the correction, however, there remains a dispersion of polarization degree among different objects. We present the first spectropolarimetric observations of a candidate of super-Chandrasekhar mass Type Ia supernova (SN): SN 2009dc. The observations were performed at 5.6 and 89.5 days after the B-band maximum. The data taken at the later epoch are used to determine the interstellar polarization. Continuum polarization is found to be small (<0.3 %), indicating that the explosion is nearly spherically symmetric. This fact suggests that a very aspherical explosion is not a likely scenario for SN 2009dc. Polarization at the Si II and Ca II lines clearly shows a loop in the Q-U plane, indicating a non-axisymmetric, clumpy distribution of intermediate-mass elements. The degree of line polarization at the Si and Ca line is moderate (0.5% +- 0.1% and 0.7% +- 0.1%, respectively), but it is higher than expected from the trend of other Type Ia SNe. This may suggest that there are thick enough, clumpy Si-rich layers above the thick 56Ni-rich layers (>~ 1.2 Msun). The observed spectropolarimetric properties, combined with the photometric and spectroscopic properties, suggest that the progenitor of SN 2009dc has a super-Chandrasekhar mass, and that the explosion geometry is globally spherically symmetric, with clumpy distribution of intermediate-mass elements., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, The Astrophysical Journal, in press

Core-collapse supernovae (CC-SNe) are the explosions that announce the death of massive stars. Some CC-SNe are linked to long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and are highly aspherical. One important question is to what extent asphericity is common to all CC-SNe. Here we present late-time spectra for a number of CC-SNe from stripped-envelope stars, and use them to explore any asphericity generated in the inner part of the exploding star, near the site of collapse. A range of oxygen emission-line profiles is observed, including a high incidence of double-peaked profiles, a distinct signature of an aspherical explosion. Our results suggest that all CC-SNe from stripped-envelope stars are aspherical explosions and that SNe accompanied by GRBs exhibit the highest degree of asphericity., Comment: Science 319, 1220 (2008) (29 February 2008 issue). We performed deep K'-band imaging observations of 2 massive clusters, MS 0451.6-0305 at z = 0.55 and MS 0440.5+0204 at z = 0.19, for searching counterparts of the faint sub-mm sources behind these clusters, which would provide one of the deepest extremely red object(ERO) samples. Comparing our near-infrared images with optical images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope and by the Subaru Telescope, we identified 13 EROs in these fields. The sky distributions of EROs are consistent with the previous results, that there is a sign of strong clustering among detected EROs. Also, the surface density with corrected lensing amplification factors in both clusters are in good agreement with that derived from previous surveys. We found 7 EROs and 3 additional very red objects in a small area (\sim 0.6 arcmin^2) of the MS 0451.6-0305 field around an extended SCUBA source. Many of their optical and near-infrared colors are consistent with dusty star-forming galaxies at high redshifts(z \sim 1.0-4.0), and they may be constituting a cluster of dusty starburst galaxies and/or lensed star-forming galaxies at high redshift. Their red J-K' colors and faint optical magnitudes suggest they are relatively old massive stellar systems with ages(>300 Mega years) suffering from dust obscuration. We have constructed a very deep K'-selected multicolor BVRIz'JK' sample of 439 field galaxies. Photometric redshifts for sample galaxies were estimated. The overall redshift distribution N(z) for the K'<21.0 sample is consistent with previous observations, and for the first time we derive the N(z) down to K'=24.0. After taking account of the dust extinction and selection effects of the sample, the observed N(z) distribution is well described with the PLE model, while the hierarchical galaxy formation model shows an apparent deficiency of galaxies especially at z>2. The photometric redshift and the best-fit SED model evaluations allow the derivation of the rest-frame K', B, and UV(2000A) luminosity functions (LFs) and their evolutions. The rest-K' LF shows almost no evolution up to z=3, while the rest B LF shows mild luminosity evolution, and the rest UV LF shows strong luminosity evolution. This trend corresponds to the evolution of the rest UV-K' color, which gets bluer with increasing redshift. We also found that more massive galaxies are redder in this rest-frame color in every epoch. The rest-UV LF of our K'-selected galaxies shows a much shallower faint end slope at z=3 than that of previous estimations for rest-UV selected Lyman break galaxies. As a consequence, the contribution to the global star formation rate of our K'-selected galaxies is about 42% of that derived from the integration of LF of Lyman break galaxies at z=3. This result suggests that a large fraction of the star formation rate density at z>1.5 comes from the contribution from the faint (M_2000A>-20) blue galaxy population at high redshift universe that have not yet obviously been identified. We present new optical images ($B$, $V$, and H$\alpha$) of the archetypical starburst/superwind galaxy M82 obtained with the 8.2 m Subaru Telescope to reveal new detailed structures of the superwind-driven nebula and the high-latitude dark lanes. The emission-line nebula is decomposed into (1) a ridge-dominated component comprising numerous filament/loop sub-structures whose overall morphology appears as a pair of narrow cylinders, and (2) a diffuse component extended over much wider opening angle from the nucleus. We suggest that these two components have different origins. The ridge-dominated component appears as a pair of cylinders rather than a pair of cones. Since this morphological property is similar to that of hot plasma probed by soft X-ray, this component seems to surround the hot plasma. On the other hand, the diffuse component may arise from dust grains which scatter stellar light from the galaxy. Since inner region of this component is seen over the prominent ^^ ^^ X"-shaped dark lanes streaming out from the nuclear region and they can be reproduced as a conical distribution of dust grains, there seems to be a dusty cold outflow as well as the hot one probed by soft X-ray and shock-excited optical emission lines. If this is the case, the presence of such high-latitude dust grains implies that neutral gaseous matter is also blown out during the course of the superwind activity., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures. We present new optical spectroscopy of the lens elliptical galax in the ``Einstein Cross'' lens system HST 14176+5226, using the Faint Object Camera and Spectrograph (FOCAS) of the Subaru t Our spectroscopic observations are aimed at measuring the stella dispersion of the lens galaxy, located at high redshift of z_L= as an important component to lens models. We have measured this 230 +- 14 km s^{-1} (1 sigma) inside 0.35 effective radi based on the comparison between the observed galaxy spectrum and templates of three G-K giants by means of the Fourier cross-corr To extract the significance of this information on the geometry universe which also affects the lensing of the background image, to fit three different lens models to the available data of the Provided that the lens galaxy has the structural and dynamical p (i.e., its radial density profile, core radius, and velocity ani similar to those of local elliptical galaxies, we calculate the function for the simultaneous reproduction of both the observed and newly measured velocity dispersion of the lens. Although the interval depends rather sensitively on the adopted lens models o parameters, our experiments suggest the larger likelihood for a cosmological constant, Omega_Lambda: formal 1 sigma lower Omega_Lambda in the flat universe ranges 0.73 to 0.97, where lower limit is basically unavailable. This method for determinin model is thus dependent on lens models but is insensitive to oth ambiguities, such as the dust absorption or the evolutionary eff galaxies. We discuss the properties of galaxies around the radio galaxy 3C 324 at z=1.2 based on BVRIK' multi-band imaging data. We have applied a photometric-redshift technique to objects in the 3C 324 field, and identified 35 objects as plausible cluster members. We have found that red and luminous members are concentrated in a small region enclosed by a circle of 40" radius (0.33 Mpc at z=1.2 for \Omega_0=0.3, \lambda_0=0.7, H_0=70km/s/Mpc cosmology) from the 3C 324 galaxy. The 3C 324 cluster is probably much more compact in size compared with the local clusters. We constructed a K'-band luminosity function of the cluster members and fit a Schechter function, and found the characteristic magnitude to be K*_{AB}=20.2+-0.6. This value is consistent with the extrapolation of the pure passive evolution seen for z<1 clusters. We have identified eight bright galaxies which form a red color-magnitude sequence. The slope of the sequence is consistent with the passive evolution model down to K'_{AB}<22; we also found that there is no clear age variation in these bright red galaxies. However, seven out of these eight galaxies exhibit a significant excess in the rest UV light with respect to the passive evolution model. This may suggest that the massive early-type galaxies in this high-redshift cluster are still forming stars to some extent. We have confirmed a truncation of the color-magnitude sequence at K'_{AB}\sim22; faint passively-evolving galaxies may not yet be present in this cluster at z\sim1.2. The overall color distribution of the cluster members, selected by the photometric redshift technique, is found to be very broad. We present new optical spectroscopy of the high-redshift powerful radio galaxy MRC 0406$-$244 at redshift of 2.429. We find that the two extensions toward NW and SE probed in the rest-frame ultraviolet image are heated mainly by the nonthermal continuum of the active galactic nucleus. However, each extension shows a shell-like morphology, suggesting that they are a pair of superbubbles induced by the superwind activity rather than by the interaction between the radio jet and the ambient gas clouds. If this is the case, the intense starburst responsible for the formation of superbubbles could occur $\sim 1 \times 10^9$ yr ago. On the other hand, the age of the radio jets may be of the order of $\sim 10^6$ yr, being much shorter than the starburst age. Therefore, the two events, i.e., the starburst and the radio-jet activities, are independent phenomena. However, their directions of the expanding motions could be governed by the rotational motion of the gaseous component in the host galaxy. We have obtained high-resolution K'-band images of the powerful z=1.206 radio galaxy 3C 324 with the Subaru telescope under seeing conditions of 0.3--0.4 arcsec. We clearly resolved the galaxy and directly compared it to the optical images obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. The host galaxy of 3C 324 is revealed to be a moderately luminous elliptical galaxy with a smooth light profile. The effective radius of the galaxy, as determined by profile fitting, is 1.3+-0.1 arcsec (1.2 kpc), which is significantly smaller than the value of 2.2 arcsec, published in Best et al. (1998, MNRAS, 292, 758). The peak of the K'-band light coincides with the position of the radio core, which implies that the powerful AGN lies at the nucleus of the host galaxy. The peak also coincides with the gap in the optical knotty structures which may be a dust lane hiding the UV-optical emission of the AGN from our line of sight; it is very likely that we are seeing the obscuring structure almost edge-on. We clearly detected the `aligned component' in the K'-band image by subtracting a model elliptical galaxy from the observed image. The red R_F702W-K color of the outer region of the galaxy avoiding the aligned component indicates that the near infrared light of the host galaxy is dominated by an old stellar population., Comment: 21 pages (10 figures), accepted for publication in PASJ

We investigate the $K$-band luminosity distribution of galaxies in the region of clusters at $z\sim1.2$ near to the radio galaxy 3C 324. The imaging data were obtained during the commissioning period of the Subaru telescope. There is a significant excess of the surface number density of the galaxies with $K =$ 17--20 mag in the region within $\sim$ 40'' from 3C 324. At this bright end, the measured luminosity distribution shows a drop, which can be represented by the exponential cut off of the Schechter-function formula; the best-fitted value of the characteristic magnitude, $K^{*}$, is $\sim 18.4\pm0.8$. This measurement follows the evolutionary trend of the $K^*$ of the rich clusters observed at an intermediate redshift, which is consistent with passive evolution models with a formation redshift $z_f \gtsim 2$. At $K \gtsim 20$ mag, however, the excess of the galaxy surface density in the region of the clusters decreases abruptly, which may imply that the luminosity function of the cluster galaxies has a negative slope at the faint end. This may imply strong luminosity segregation between the inner and outer parts of the clusters, or some deficit of faint galaxies in the cluster central region of the cluster., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

We have investigated the optical and near-infrared colors of K'-selected galaxies in clusters at z ~ 1.2 near to the radio galaxy 3C 324 using images obtained with the Subaru telescope and archival HST data. The distribution of colors of the galaxies in the cluster region is found to be fairly broad, and it may imply significant scatter in their star-formation histories, although the effect of contamination of field galaxies is uncertain. The red sequence of galaxies whose R-K colors are consistent with passive evolution models for old galaxies is found to be truncated at K' ~ 20 mag, and there are few fainter galaxies with similar red colors in the cluster region. We find that the bulge-dominated galaxies selected by quantitative morphological classification form a broad sequence in the color-magnitude diagram, whose slope is much steeper than that expected from metallicity variations within a passively evolving coeval galaxy population. We argue that the observed color-magnitude sequence can be explained by metallicity and age variations, and the fainter galaxies with K' > 20 mag may be 1-2 Gyr younger than the brighter galaxies. Some spatial segregation of the color and K'-band luminosity is seen in the sky distribution; the redder and the brighter objects tend to be located near 3C 324., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

We have performed a long-slit K band spectroscopic observation of the luminous infrared galaxy NGC 6240. The peak position of the H_2 v=1-0 S(1) emission in the slit is located ~0.3" - 0.4" north of the southern nucleus. It is almost the midpoint between the southern nucleus and the peak position of the ^12CO J=1-0 emission. Based on the line-ratio analyses, we suggest the excitation mechanism of H_2 is pure thermal at most positions. In the southern region we find the following three velocity components in the H_2 emission: the blueshifted shell component (~-250 km s^-1 with respect to V_sys) which is recognized as a distinct C-shape distortion in the velocity field around the southern nucleus, the high-velocity blueshifted ``wing'' component (~-1000 km s^-1 with respect to V_sys), and the component indicating possible line splitting of ~500 km s^-1. The latter two components are extended to the south from the southern nucleus. We show that the kinematic properties of these three components can be reproduced by expanding motion of a shell-like structure around the southern nucleus. The offset peak position of the H_2 emission can be understood if we assume that the shell expanding to the north interacts with the extragalactic molecular gas. At the interface between the shell and the molecular gas concentration the cloud-crushing mechanism proposed by Cowie et al. (1981) may work efficiently, and the intense H_2 emission is thus expected there. All these findings lead us to propose a model that the most H_2 emission is attributed to the shock excitation driven by the superwind activity of the southern nucleus., Comment: 33 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ
