Abstract

Nuclear data is critical for many modern applications from stockpile stewardship to cutting edge scientific research. Central to these pursuits is a robust pipeline for nuclear modeling as well as data assimilation and dissemination. We summarize a small portion of the ongoing nuclear data efforts at Los Alamos for medium mass to heavy nuclei. We begin with an overview of the NEXUS framework and show how one of its modules can be used for model parameter optimization using Bayesian techniques. The mathematical framework affords the combination of different measured data in determining model parameters and their associated correlations. It also has the advantage of being able to quantify outliers in data. We exemplify the power of this procedure by highlighting the recently evaluated 239-Pu cross section. We further showcase the success of our tools and pipeline by covering the insight gained from incorporating the latest nuclear modeling and data in astrophysical simulations as part of the Fission In R-process Elements (FIRE) collaboration., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, Nuclear Data (2022) conference proceedings. Abstract

The pre-equilibrium reaction mechanism is considered in the context of the exciton model. A modification to the one-particle one-hole state density is studied which can be interpreted as a collective enhancement. The magnitude of the collective enhancement is set by simulating the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) pulsed-spheres neutron-leakage spectra. The impact of the collective enhancement is explored in the context of the highly deformed actinide, 239-Pu. A consequence of this enhancement is the removal of fictitious levels in the Distorted-Wave Born Approximation often used in modern nuclear reaction codes., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures. First, CD1dKO mice were susceptible to obesity caused by HFD in comparison to WT mice. Second, clinical conditions of fatty liver caused by HFD were comparable between CD1dKO mice and WT mice. Third, HFD-fed WT mice showed high levels of serum biochemical markers, involved in lipid metabolisms, in comparison to WT mice fed a CTD. Notably, the serum concentrations of ALT, T-CHO, TG and HDL-C in CD1dKO mice fed a HFD were almost comparable to those of CD1dKO mice fed a CTD. Fourth, the expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) γ, low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR), CD36 of epididymal adipose tissue enhanced and proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type (PCSK) 9 in serum decreased.Conclusion: NKT cells were responsible for protection against HFD-induced obesity. However, CD1dKO mice were resistant to serum biochemical marker abnormalities after HFD feeding. One possible explanation is that the epididymal adipose tissue of CD1dKO mice could take up greater amounts of excess lipids in serum in comparison to WT mice.Keywords: NKT cells, high-fat diet, obesity, serum biochemical markers, adipose tissue

Therefore, in this study, we retrospectively evaluated schizophrenia patients with available data for 20 years to determine whether the drug treatments in the same patients have changed in the past 20 years.Methods: The study began in April 2021 and was conducted in 15 psychiatric hospitals in Japan. Schizophrenia patients treated in the same hospital for 20 years were retrospectively examined for all prescriptions in 2016, 2011, 2006, and 2001 (ie, every 5 years).Results: The mean age of the 716 patients surveyed in 2021 was 61.7 years, with 49.0% being female. The rate of antipsychotic monotherapy use showed a slight increasing trend over the past 20 years; the rate of SGA use showed a marked increasing trend from 28.9% to 70.3% over the past 20 years, while the rate of SGA monotherapy use showed a gradual increasing trend over the past 20 years. The rates of concomitant use of anticholinergics, antidepressants, anxiolytics/sleep medications, and mood stabilizers showed decreasing, flat, flat, and flat trends over the past 20 years, respectively.Conclusion: The results of this study showed a slow but steady substitution of SGAs for first-generation antipsychotics (FGAs) over time, even in the same patients.Keywords: pharmacoepidemiology, prescription, antipsychotics, trends, schizophrenia

Abstract

In differential phase contrast scanning transmission electron microscopy (DPC-STEM), variability in dynamical diffraction resulting from changes in sample thickness and local crystal orientation (due to sample bending) can produce contrast comparable to that arising from the long-range electromagnetic fields probed by this technique. Through simulation we explore the scale of these dynamical diffraction artefacts and introduce a metric for the magnitude of their confounding contribution to the contrast. We show that precession over an angular range of a few milliradian can suppress this confounding contrast by one-to-two orders of magnitude. Our exploration centres around a case study of GaAs near the [011] zone-axis orientation using a probe-forming aperture semiangle on the order of 0.1 mrad at 300 keV, but the trends found and methodology used are expected to apply more generally., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, submitted to Ultramicroscopy

9. Possible effects of collective neutrino oscillations in the three flavor multi-angle simulations on supernova $\nu p$ process

Abstract

We study the effects of collective neutrino oscillations on $\nu p$ process nucleosynthesis in proton-rich neutrino-driven winds by including both the multi-angle $3\times3$ flavor mixing and the nucleosynthesis network calculation. The number flux of energetic electron antineutrinos is raised by collective neutrino oscillations in a $1$D supernova model for $40 M_{\odot}$ progenitor. When the gas temperature decreases down to $\sim2-3\times10^{9}$ K, the increased flux of electron antineutrinos promotes $\nu p$ process more actively, resulting in the enhancement of $p$-nuclei. In the early phase of neutrino-driven wind, blowing at $0.6$ s after core bounce, oscillation effects are prominent in inverted mass hierarchy and $p$-nuclei are synthesized up to $^{106}\mathrm{Cd}$ and $^{108}\mathrm{Cd}$. On the other hand, in the later wind trajectory at $1.1$ s after core bounce, abundances of $p$-nuclei are increased remarkably by $\sim10-10^{4}$ times in normal mass hierarchy and even reaching heavier $p$-nuclei such as $^{124}\mathrm{Xe}$, $^{126}\mathrm{Xe}$ and $^{130}\mathrm{Ba}$. The averaged overproduction factor of $p$-nuclei is dominated by the later wind trajectories. Our results demonstrate that collective neutrino oscillations can strongly influence $\nu p$ process, which indicates that they should be included in the network calculations in order to obtain precise abundances of $p$-nuclei. The conclusions of this paper depend on the difference of initial neutrino parameters between electron and non-electron antineutrino flavors which is large in our case. Further systematic studies on input neutrino physics and wind trajectories are necessary to draw a robust conclusion. However, this finding would help understand the origin of solar-system isotopic abundances of $p$-nuclei such as $^{92,94}\mathrm{Mo}$ and $^{96,98}\mathrm{Ru}$., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Phys.Rev.D

Abstract

The two arrays of the Very High Energy gamma-ray observatory Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will include four Large Size Telescopes (LSTs) each with a 23 m diameter dish and 28 m focal distance. These telescopes will enable CTA to achieve a low-energy threshold of 20 GeV, which is critical for important studies in astrophysics, astroparticle physics and cosmology. Abstract

We have developed a prototype of the photomultiplier tube (PMT) readout system for the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) Large Size Telescope (LST). Two thousand PMTs along with their readout systems are arranged on the focal plane of each telescope, with one readout system per 7-PMT cluster. The Cherenkov light pulses generated by the air showers are detected by the PMTs and amplified in a compact, low noise and wide dynamic range gain block. The output of this block is then digitized at a sampling rate of the order of GHz using the Domino Ring Sampler DRS4, an analog memory ASIC developed at Paul Scherrer Institute. The sampler has 1,024 capacitors per channel and four channels are cascaded for increased depth. After a trigger is generated in the system, the charges stored in the capacitors are digitized by an external slow sampling ADC and then transmitted via Gigabit Ethernet. An onboard FPGA controls the DRS4, trigger threshold, and Ethernet transfer. In addition, the control and monitoring of the Cockcroft-Walton circuit that provides high voltage for the 7-PMT cluster are performed by the same FPGA. Abstract

The magnetic, electric and thermal properties of the ($Ln_{1-y}$Y$_{y}$)$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$CoO$_3$ perovskites ($Ln$~=~Pr, Nd) were investigated down to very low temperatures. The main attention was given to a peculiar metal-insulator transition, which is observed in the praseodymium based samples with $y=0.075$ and 0.15 at $T_{M-I}=64$ and 132~K, respectively. The study suggests that the transition, reported originally in Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$CoO$_3$, is not due to a mere change of cobalt ions from the intermediate- to the low-spin states, but is associated also with a significant electron transfer between Pr$^{3+}$ and Co$^{3+}$/Co$^{4+}$ sites, so that the praseodymium ions occur below $T_{M-I}$ in a mixed Pr$^{3+}$/Pr$^{4+}$ valence. The presence of Pr$^{4+}$ ions in the insulating phase of the yttrium doped samples (Pr$_{1-y}$Y$_{y}$)$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$CoO$_3$ is evidenced by Schottky peak originating in Zeeman splitting of the ground state Kramers doublet. The peak is absent in pure Pr$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$CoO$_3$ in which metallic phase, based solely on non-Kramers Pr$^{3+}$ ions, is retained down to the lowest temperature., Comment: 10 figures

However, the reason for these results is not apparent. The aim of this study was to evaluate the tumor spillage during LRH with vaginal closure without the use of a manipulator.Patients and methods: Twenty-four patients with cervical cancer underwent total LRH with vaginal closure. To evaluate the leakage of cancer cells during surgery, peritoneal cytology was performed before and after hysterectomy.Results: Among 24 patients with cervical cancer, 2 had stage IA2 disease, 19 had stage IB1 disease and 3 had stage IIA1 disease. Two patients had lymph node metastasis. The median tumor size on final pathology was 9 mm. No cancer cells were identified before or after hysterectomy in any patients.Conclusion: Total LRH with vaginal closure did not increase the propensity for tumor spillage in the peritoneal cavity.Keywords: cervical cancer, laparoscopy, radical hysterectomy, vaginal closure

Abstract

We have conducted a comprehensive observational study to determine the mixing ratios of atmospheric chemical species and total OH reactivity in central Tokyo, in order to diagnose the air quality during summer and winter 2007 and autumn 2009. Concentrations of over 70 reactive trace species were continuously measured throughout each season. The total OH reactivity was measured directly using a laser-induced pump and probe technique. The observed chemical species exhibited seasonal variations. There was a good correlation between NO and CO in winter, but not in summer. This indicates that during winter, vehicle exhaust provided a significant source of NO in central Tokyo, while photolysis of NO 2 was dominant in summer. Similar values (approximately 30s -1) for the averaged total OH reactivity were observed in both summer and autumn during the daytime. However, VOCs accounted for a larger percentage of the OH reactivity in summer, while NO x was more dominant in autumn. We find that photochemical processes leading to oxidant production via VOCs dominated OH removal in summer, while the production of nitric acid from the reaction between OH and NO 2 was dominant in autumn, by-passing the oxidant production pathways and resulting in reduced oxidant formation. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract

This paper presents the development of a method for calculating the horizontal contact forces between two bodies in a real-time ship manoeuvring simulator. The method was implemented in the simulator of the University of São Paulo, whose computing core is named "Dyna". The model proposed calculates restoration and friction forces between bodies and has a Momentum-Impulse based criterion to reduce numerical issues when the simulation numerical integration has large time-steps. The model was empirically evaluated at the simulator by deck officers, in real-time simulations with pilots and tugmasters. We also ran simulations of that model to compare its performance under different integration time-steps lengths. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

An assessment of the abundances and their trends is urgently needed for the conservation and management of fishery-targeted and rarely seen cetacean species (FTCS and RSCS, respectively); however, such assessment is often challenging because of the paucity of available data. In particular, the number of sightings is smaller than the general requirement for the reliable estimation of a detection function, and the spatial coverage of many cetacean surveys is insufficient. To address these issues, we propose a Bayesian approach that uses the previous abundance estimation of the same species or a species with similar biological traits as prior information. Therefore, we obtained the latest abundance estimates for six FTCS and two RSCS. For FTCS, we also estimated abundance trends by fitting an exponential population dynamics model with random effects accounting for interannual changes in animal distributions to the posterior samples of the Bayesian abundance estimates. Our approach enables us to (1) facilitate stakeholders' consensus by maintaining previously agreed abundances while updating the conservation information; (2) identify the species of greater concern and prioritize conservation efforts towards those species; and (3) monitor the abundance and trends of data-limited cetacean species.
