1. Knowledge Workers & 'Ilm' - A Retrospective on Islamic Philosophy and Epistemology for Learning Organizations

Abstract

This paper is intended to introduce knowledge workers to a unique paradigm on virtue epistemology, i.e., reflective knowledge, based on the doctrines of Islamic philosophy as 'Ilm.' The paper proposes a holistic framework for acquiring reflective knowledge, the epistemic attributes of knowledge workers, and the significance of reflective knowledge in the dynamic knowledge economy. Methodology – Theoretical framework proposed in the current paper is based on the theories proposed by Muslim philosophers. Books on the epistemological aspect of Islamic philosophy and web-based articles on Ilm as reflective knowledge have been taken as references. Findings - Islamic philosophy has put forth a holistic paradigm on the virtues of knowledge workers and the attributes that help learning organizations acquire reflective knowledge. Practical implications - The propositions in the paper may be tested for empirical evidence in future research. Moreover, the framework for acquiring reflective knowledge and instilling epistemic virtues in knowledge workers may be a powerful tool for knowledge managers. Originality/Value - Islamic philosophy is believed to be based on theological grounds; however, this paper intends to introduce the doctrines based on logic and rationale proposed by noted scholars. The paper is also unique in constructing a holistic framework that may assist organizations in acquiring reflective knowledge and training knowledge workers to acquire prescribed epistemic attributes.

2. Evaluation of Heavy Metals Concentration in Some Bottled Water Brands in Kurdistan Region

Abstract

Recently Bottled waters became the main resources for drinking water supply, where the use of bottled waters in some region has exchanged the distribution system of drinking water. However, several different chemicals may be found in drinking bottled water, for instance heavy metals, that have accumulated in lethal amounts which could affect human health after prolonged periods of exposure. Therefore, this study was carried out to evaluate some bottled water brands in Kurdistan region of Iraq in term of their contents of heavy metal comparing with both WHO and SQI water standards. About 108 samples were collected (18 brands; 6 samples from each brand) from October to December 2019, bought randomly from grocery shops and supermarkets in Duhok, Erbil and Sulaymaniyah city, Kurdistan region, Iraq. Cobalt (Co), Cadmium (Cd), Lead (Pb), Copper (Cu), Chromium (Cr), Iron (Fe), Selenium (Se) and Mercury (Hg) concentrations were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Heavy metal pollution index (HPI), degree of contamination (Cdeg) and heavy metal evaluation index (HEI) were also calculated for evaluating the overall quality of bottled water. Results of individual criteria revealed that, excluding Cd and Hg, heavy metals content in all bottled water samples were lower than approved limits according to Iraqi's (IQS:417) and WHO standards. Though, the results exhibited that Cd content in some of the studied water samples was greater than the allowable limits (3μg/L) according to the depended standards. Concerning the values of metal pollution indices, although there were higher HPI values than critical value (100) in three water brands i.e. Al-Joud, Al-Waha and Sanbenedetto, the indices values for all other bottled water were below the critical value. According to the results of this study, it can be concluded that except for Cd value in few brands and all Hg values, the studied bottled water are safe for drinking. Moreover, companies of bottled water package are recommended to monitor their products through analyzing the water sample periodically and use activated carbon filtration to ensure the safety of drinking bottled water.

3. Influence of Different Feeding Ratio of Pomegranate Peels Powder on Testicular Dimensions, Body Weight and Testosterone Concentration in Karadi Male Lambs

Abstract

The current study was presented to conclude the influence of different ratio of pomegranate peel powder (PP) in feed of Karadi male lambs, they divided to 4 groups (0% as a control, 1% treatment 1, 2% treatment 2 and 4% as treatment 3), on scrotal circumference (SC), scrotum height (SH), body weight (BW) and blood serum testosterone concentration (T). In this study, sixteen (16) of Karadi male lambs used with 24.30 ± 0.40 kg weight and with 4-5 months old, all lambs have been randomly divided equally into four (4) groups and individually penned in a box for during 63 days. Results in our study showed that SC was significantly different and recorded higher 17.875±0.54 cm in group that fed on 1% PP, also SH recorded higher and significant different in group fed on 1% PP compared with other groups 10.000±0.32 cm. Average blood serum testosterone reduces in all groups compared to control group that fed on 0% of PP (11.418±0.15 n.mol/L). Final body weight in our study had significantly different (P < 0.05) between groups, 1% PP recorded higher weight (34.9 ± 0.58) kg. Each average daily gain, total body gain and initial body weight had not significant different in all groups. Correlation coefficient between SC, SH, blood serum testosterone concentration and final BW computed and ranged between (-0.397 to + 0.914).

Through a series of immune reactions and enzymatic reactions on a solid lateral flow platform, 8-OHdG concentration has been converted to a relative amount of glucose, and therefore can be detected by conventional glucose meter directly. The device was able to detect 8-OHdG concentrations in phosphate buffer saline as low as 1.73 ng mL-1 with a dynamic range of 1–200 ng mL-1. Considering the inherent advantages of the personal glucose meter, the demonstration of this device, therefore, should provide new opportunities for the monitoring of a wide range of biomarkers and various target analytes in connection with different molecular recognition events. 5. Effect of Different Potting Mixes on Germination and Vegetative Growth of Sweet Pepper Plant (Capsicum Annum L.) Under Greenhouse Conditions

Abstract

Sweet pepper is a high nutrient demanding vegetable crop. Fertilizer use and management is therefore of highly important to sustain growth and high yield. However, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of using different types of organic fertilizer on germination and vegetative growth of sweet pepper plant, that have bell-shaped (Capsicum annum L), grown in pots culture under greenhouse condition. The study was conducted at the College of Agriculture, Duhok Governorate, Kurdistan region, Iraq during March 15th, 2015, to June 25th, 2015. The treatments that have been compared in this study were: T1 (Control 100% soil); T2 Municipal Solid Waste compost taken from Kashe factory (1:1 V/V); T3 Sheep manure (1:1 V/V); and T4Peat moss (1:1 V/V).The experiment was randomized complete design with three replicate. The parameters that have been measured were: germination percentage, plant height; number of leave per plant; leaf area and plant fresh and dry weight per pot. In most cases all the studied growth parameters were significantly higher in pot treated by peatmoss and sheep manure compared to control and Municipal Solid Waste compost. Germination percentage was also significantly enhanced in treatment amended by peatmoss and sheep manure. Municipal waste compost was significantly reduced the all the plant growth parameter and germination percentage as well. Depending on these results it can be suggested that organic fertilizers particularly peatmoss and sheep manure can be used to enhance growth and productivity in plant pepper. It was also claimed that the amount of municipal waste compost that was used in this experiment might be too high so further study should be conducted with different ratio on the quality of this type of organic fertilizer.

6. Effect of Magnetic Water and Phosphorus Rates on Some Nutrients Uptake by Summer Squash Grown In Calcareous Soil of Duhok Governorate.

Abstract

This study was conducted at the college of Agriculture/ Duhok University during August-November 2009, to study the effect of magnetic water treatment and phosphorus fertilizer rates (P0= 0, P1= 90, P2 = 180, P3 = 270) kg P2O5 ha-1 and their interactions on some nutrient uptake by summer squash plant in addition to their effect on some chemical properties soil at (0-15 and 15-30 cm) depth. Mulla-Ahmed seeds were sown in ridges 0.5 m apart. Half of the treatments were irrigated with well water and the other half with the same water after magnetization. The results indicated that magnetic water significantly increased dry weight of plants and also had significant effect on uptake of nutrients by plant and soil nutrients and they were significantly higher at 0-15 cm. An interaction of P3 x MW gave best uptake values by plant for most nutrients, higher concentration of calcium, magnesium, total nitrogen and phosphorus in the soil.

Abstract

Research in market orientation has overlooked the importance of its impact on various aspects of marketing strategy, especially on distribution channel strategy. Using Kohli & Jaworski's framework of measuring market orientation (MO) and pesticide industry of Pakistan as a context, this article explores the relationship between various constructs of MO with channel strategy. This paper draws survey data from the pesticide industry in Pakistan. Given the low response rate, a norm in developing countries, boots trapping technique is employed and tests are run. The results reveal that level MO has an impact on how channel strategies are formulated. Findings of the research indicate that higher level of MO is associated with selective channel strategy involving low intensity of distribution and higher channel control. The results also suggest that the right channel strategy helps an organization to create differentiation and to improve performance in a commodity market.

8. Physico-chemical Profile and Microbial Diversity During Bioconversion of Sugarcane Press Mud Using Bacterial Suspension

Abstract

This study was aimed at investigating the physico-chemical and microbial diversity for rapid composting of sugarcane press mud (PM) leading to organic manure. Five bacterial strains (Cellulomonas sp., Klebsiella sp., Proteus sp., Enterobacter sp., Salmonella sp.) were tested under in vivo conditions for bioconversion of PM using pile method. Results revealed that combined inoculation of bacterial consortia was found to be the best decomposer of PM resulting reduction of organic carbon content (26.75%), C:N ratio (12.44%). In parallel, it increased the nitrogen (2.34%), phosphorous (1.15%) and potassium (1.37%) content along with the population of microorganisms i.e. bacteria, fungi and actinomycetes. However, the population of tested bacteria was gradually depleted after completion of PM decomposition together with pathogenic bacteria and fungi due to full conversion of carbon component into other minerals, i.e. N, P, K etc. Taken together, these findings certainly pinpoints the effective role of bacterial suspension for composting sugarcane press mud which the eventually be used as organic manure.

9. Contrasting views of animal healthcare providers on worm control practices for sheep and goats in an arid environment

Abstract

A questionnaire survey was conducted to determine the worm control practices and anthelmintic usage of 150 key respondents involved in sheep and goat production in the arid Thal area of Pakistan. The information was collected by visiting farms, and interviewing the key respondents which included veterinary officers (n = 15), veterinary assistants (n = 51), traditional practitioners (n = 24), and small and large scale sheep/goat farm herders and owners (n = 60). Among all interviewed animal healthcare providers, the veterinary officers had the highest level of awareness of parasitic infection and advocated the use of modern available anthelmintics according to the predefined schedule. The farmers on the other hand, had the lowest level of knowledge about parasitic infections. They used modern anthelmintics at low frequencies (every six months) following an unusual practice of diluting the medicine. Veterinary assistants had a medium level of awareness about the parasitic infections using anthelmintic treatments when they deemed necessary rather than following a predefined treatment schedule. Traditional practitioners were also aware of parasitic infections and used traditional anthelmintics or a combination of the traditional and modern anthelmintics. The animal health providers had a different awareness and knowledge of parasitic infections which resulted in contrasting proposals for its control. The farmers used worm control measures in accordance with their own views and those of animal healthcare advisors, combining modern and traditional treatments. This study provides the first insight into the differing views of those animal healthcare providers who form the basis for effective parasitic control within the sheep and goat industry of an arid region.

Abstract

This study explores the emission of massive charged spin-1 particles from the background of Bardeen regular spacetime by the semi-classical method used to study the Hawking radiation spectrum. We employed the Hamilton-Jacobi method and WKB approximation technique with the suitable form of the wave function to solve the Proca field equation. We calculated the tunneling probability of outgoing spin-1 particles and the corresponding thermodynamic temperature. Furthermore, we obtained the modified thermodynamic quantities like temperature, entropy as well as heat capacity by utilizing the quadratic form of generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) and minimal length. In the end, we investigated the local stability as well as phase transitions of the Bardeen black hole in the context of GUP-modified heat capacity., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

21. The Drivers of Brand Equity: Brand Image, Satisfaction and Trust

Abstract

This study is aimed to investigate the relationship between brand image, brand trust, brand satisfaction and brand equity. The study is based on primary data collected through questionnaire-based survey. Convenient sampling technique is used and a sample of 278 was selected in this study. Reliability and normality test (Cronbach Alpha = 0.674; significant values of Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Shapiro-Wilk) were used prior to the testing of hypothesis. Based on normality tests results, non-parametric correlation (Spearman's rho) test was conducted to test the hypothesis. It was found that brand trust, brand image and brand satisfaction are the significant factors of the brand equity. The descriptive statistics of mobile cell phone brands showed that major market share is captured by the Nokia (68%) and remaining share is captured by the rest of the brands in available in the market of mobile cell phones in Sukkur region. Based on findings of the study, it is suggested to the strategic policy makers in the mobile cell phone companies to heavily emphasize on the improvement of these three basic determinants in cutthroat competition in cell phone industry.&nbsp

Abstract

The evolving necessity of the Internet increases the demand on the bandwidth. Therefore, this demand opens the doors for the hackers' community to develop new methods and techniques to gain control over networking systems. Hence, the intrusion detection systems (IDS) are insufficient to prevent/detect unauthorized access the network. Network Intrusion Detection System (NIDS) is one example that still suffers from performance degradation due the increase of the link speed in today's networks. In This paper we proposed a novel algorithm to detect the intruders, who's trying to gain access to the network using the packets header parameters such as; source/destination address, source/destination port, and protocol without the need to inspect each packet content looking for signatures/patterns. However, the "Packet Header Matching" algorithm enhances the overall speed of the matching process between the incoming packet headers against the rule set. We ran the proposed algorithm to proof the proposed concept in coping with the traffic arrival speeds and the various bandwidth demands. Abstract

Purpose - The current paper is intended to introduce knowledge workers and managers to a unique paradigm on virtue epistemology, that is, reflective knowledge, based on the doctrines of Islamic philosophy as 'Ilm.' The study proposed a holistic framework to acquire reflective knowledge, the epistemic attributes of knowledge workers, and the significance of reflective knowledge in the dynamic knowledge economy. Methodology – Theoretical framework proposed in the current paper is based on the theories proposed by Muslim philosophers. Books on the epistemological aspect of Islamic philosophy and web-based articles on Ilm as reflective knowledge were taken as references. Findings - Islamic philosophy helps to put forth a holistic paradigm on the virtues of knowledge workers and the attributes that help learning organizations acquire reflective knowledge. Practical Implications - The propositions made in this paper may be tested for empirical evidence in future research. Moreover, the framework to acquire reflective knowledge and instilling epistemic virtues in knowledge workers may be a powerful tool for knowledge managers. Originality/Value - Islamic philosophy is based on theological grounds; however, this paper intends to introduce the doctrines based on logic and rationale, proposed by noted scholars. The current study is also unique in constructing a holistic framework that may assist organizations to acquire reflective knowledge and train knowledge workers to acquire prescribed epistemic attributes.
