Abstract

This study explores the impact of the perceived well-being of students; the degree to which they perceive that their university enhances, facilitates, and supports six sustainable development goals (SDGs); and entrepreneurship education on nascent entrepreneurship. Moving beyond main effects, our research uses entrepreneurship education as a moderator, offering nuanced insights into nascent entrepreneurship, particularly among art students—an under-researched group. Utilizing data from a large sample within the established research project GUESSS, our findings show a very small statistically significant positive relationship between subjective well-being and nascent entrepreneurship among art students. However, the anticipated impact of university enhancement, facilitation, and support of SDGs on nascent entrepreneurship is not evident for these students. Notably, entrepreneurship education is important for the cultivation of the future generation of art entrepreneurs. These results have important theoretical and practical implications. Abstract

Early-life exposures are critical for later child cognitive development. McCarthy Scales of Children's Abilities (MSCA) were used to assess cognitive development of 700 preschoolers (M[subscript age] = 4.2 years), derived from the "Rhea" birth cohort, in Greece. Principal component analysis (PCA) was applied on prospectively collected exposure data. Six components were extracted; five of them were associated with child cognition. Higher parental social status, preschool attendance and less TV watching, nonsmoking during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and parental involvement in child life were protective factors of child cognition at 4 years. Increased child birth order was negatively associated with child cognition. Offspring's size at birth was not associated with any cognitive outcome. These findings reveal the importance of early-life exposures to child cognitive development.

Abstract

As the current international system is leaning towards multipolarity, small states face the danger of their influence being diminished and their interests being ignored. Small states in Europe and within the European Union might find themselves in such a predicament. In order to overcome it, they are in need of effective strategies. Literature on the international relations of small states suggests that, despite their limitations, small states are able to pursue their goals and succeed in the international system. Small state studies employ the ‘small but smart state’ concept for a small state that can maximize its influence. Despite being widely used, the latter lacks analytical value and remains a cliché. The objective of this article is to pin down the ‘small but smart’ state strategy and based on that to provide a comprehensive framework for the analysis and the design of effective small state strategies. We suggest that the ‘small but smart’ state strategy shares many elements with the entrepreneurial action, as the latter is extended from its business origins to include a specific strategy. We draw on the field of entrepreneurship to explore the ways it can enhance our understanding of the international relations of small states and we introduce a framework for the ‘small and entrepreneurial state’ strategy. The notion of the ‘small and entrepreneurial state’ adds more depth and rigor into our small state analyses as well as reinvigorates a fragmented and repetitive literature. Last but not least, our ‘small and entrepreneurial state’ approach can be of use for both small state scholars and policy makers.

12. Is early life exposure to polyomaviruses and herpesviruses associated with obesity indices and metabolic traits in childhood?

Abstract

Evidence for an infectious origin of obesity is emerging. We explored whether common viruses were associated with obesity and metabolic traits. We used cross-sectional (n= 674) and prospective (n= 440) data from children participating at the 4 and 6 years of age follow-up in the Rhea birth cohort. Presence of IgG antibodies to ten polyomaviruses (BKPyV, JCPyV, KIPyV, WUPyV, HPyV6, HPyV7, TSPyV, MCPyV, HPyV9, and HPyV10) and four herpesviruses (EBV, CMV, HSV-1, and HSV-2) were measured at age 4. Body mass index, waist circumference, and skinfold thickness were measured at age 4 and 6. Data on serum lipids, leptin, and adiponectin were also available. Multivariable linear regression models were used to explore the associations. At 4 years of age, seroprevalence to polyomaviruses ranged from 21.0% for HPyV9 to 82.0% for HPyV10. Seroprevalence for EBV, CMV, HSV-1, and HSV-2 was 53.0%, 26.0%, 3.6%, and 1.5% respectively. BKPyV seropositivity was associated with lower BMI SD score at age 4 [−0.21 (95% CI: −0.39, −0.03)] and 6 [−0.27 (95% CI:-0.48, −0.05)], waist circumference at age 4 [−1.12 cm (95% CI: −2.10, −0.15)] and 6 [−1.73 cm (95% CI: −3.33, −0.12)], sum of four skinfolds [−2.97 mm (95% CI: −5.70, −0.24)], and leptin levels at age 4 [ratio of geometric means, 0.83 (95% CI: 0.70, 0.98)]. CMV seropositivity was associated with higher BMI SD score at age 4 [0.28 (95% CI: 0.11, 0.45)] and 6 [0.24 (95% CI: 0.03, 0.45)] and sum of four skinfolds at age 6 [4.75 mm (95% CI: 0.67, 8.83)]. Having “2–3 herpesviruses infections” (versus “0 herpesvirus infections”) was associated with higher BMI SD score [0.32, (95% CI: 0.12, 0.53)], waist circumference [1.22 cm (95% CI: 0.13, 2.31)], and sum of four skinfolds [3.26 mm (95% CI: 0.18, 6.35)] at age 4. Polyomaviruses burden was not associated with outcomes. A higher herpesviruses burden and CMV seropositivity were associated with obesity traits in childhood.

13. Metabolic syndrome in children and adolescents in Crete, Greece, and association with diet quality and physical fitness

Abstract

Abstract: Aim: To determine the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in children and adolescents in Crete (Greece) and examine associations with diet quality and physical fitness. Subjects and Methods: A representative sample of 1,209 Cretan children and adolescents aged 3–17 1/2 years participated in this cross-sectional survey. The study took place in kindergartens, primary and secondary schools in the cities of Heraklion and Chania and kindergartens and schools in semi-urban and rural regions outside Heraklion. The metabolic syndrome was defined as the presence of ≥3 of: impaired fasting blood glucose, hypertension, abdominal obesity, hypertriglyceridaemia, and low HDL-cholesterol. Diet quality was assessed by the Healthy Eating Index score (USDA) and physical fitness by the 20-m shuttle run test. Results: Approximately 4% of Cretan children and adolescents assessed (4.2% of boys, 3.6% of girls) had three or more metabolic syndrome factors. Over 25% of the subjects had a “poor” diet, defined as Healthy Eating Index <51, and higher diet quality scores correlated with decreased mean body mass index, waist/height ratio, systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, and number of metabolic syndrome risk factors present. Clustering of metabolic syndrome risk factors was also associated with decreased physical fitness, as well as increased body mass index, waist/height ratio and total cholesterol/HDL-cholesterol ratio. Conclusions: Presence of three or more factors related to the metabolic syndrome was strongly associated with poor diet quality and low physical fitness, as well as overweight, in Cretan children and adolescents. Health promotion strategies in childhood should encourage weight control, the establishment of healthier dietary patterns, and adequate physical activity, as a means of preventing the increase in the prevalence of this public health issue.

23. Mentoring Female Entrepreneurs: A Mentors' Training Intervention Evaluation

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the effectiveness of a mentor training intervention for experienced entrepreneurs in order to support and advise new and early stage female entrepreneurs in an attempt to enrich the limited literature of empirical data in the area of mentor training intervention assessment. Design/methodology/approach: For the evaluation of the mentor training programme, a three-level process has been used (reactions to training, knowledge and skills, behavior). Empirical research consists of quantitative research and different questionnaires were used to obtain information from respondents on a post basis. The sample consists of 52 mentors (experienced entrepreneurs) and 52 female mentees (early stage entrepreneurs). Descriptive statistics were generated by the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data. Findings: Mentors responded positively to the training, they acquired knowledge and improved their skills, and they were able to transfer their improved knowledge and skills to their mentoring relationship and to their personal and professional lives. Research limitations/implications: Findings are based on preliminary research and a more comprehensive evaluation could be devised using pre- and post-programme evaluation and resultant relationships could be further evaluated through a qualitative study. Practical implications: A mentor training intervention evaluation is needed to enhance delivery of mentoring functions tailored to the needs of female entrepreneurs. This study serves as a starting-point for further research in the field of female entrepreneurial learning and particularly mentor training to policy makers, academics and professionals. Originality/value: Although the literature on female entrepreneurship, mentoring and training is growing, very little has been done to assess mentor training interventions. 24. Entrepreneur Training for Creativity and Innovation

Abstract

Purpose: This paper's primary purpose is to emphasize the importance of entrepreneur training regarding creativity and innovation. Their significance and the importance of the latter regarding the development of business and training needs are the research questions of a survey conducted in northern Greece. Design/methodology/approach: The survey, of 116 entrepreneurs, owners of small medium and very small enterprises, investigates awareness, attitudes and perceptions regarding creativity and innovation, for facilitating the design and development of training interventions. Data were collected using modified and extended questionnaires of an analogous tool created for the needs of the TRACTORS project. The questionnaires included both open-ended and closed questions. Descriptive statistics were generated by the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data. Findings: Findings suggest that entrepreneurs/owners and/or managers of micro and small medium enterprises in northern Greece are largely aware of the significance of creativity and innovation, believing that these are positively related to each other and interact in the development of their business. Training intervention is deemed as of great importance, and obstacles concerning financial resources, experience, time, infrastructure and not risk averse, were underlined. Research limitations/implications: Creativity and innovation training interventions for entrepreneurs in terms of process, content, method, duration, trainers etc., is in a fledgling stage and requires further research to determine the "right training intervention mix" serving the needs of the non homogeneous entrepreneurial category. Originality/value: Although entrepreneurship creativity and innovation are viewed as the "creation of the future", little has been done to train entrepreneurs to participate creatively in the innovation economy. Abstract

This paper is an "evaluation" study in the form of an extensive "case study" of one particular business school in Greece. Its alleged contribution focuses on the conclusions it hopes to draw in relation to the evaluation research methodology, based on the case evaluation research, experimenting with the use of students' ratings (SETs). The effect of a number of quantitative variables (expected course grade, student study hours, course difficulty, and instructor grading system) as well as of a number of qualitative variables (student's major discipline and reason for taking a course, and instructor gender and employment status) on SETs are examined in order to provide a basis for restructuring the currently employed evaluation research methodology.

Abstract

The important role of entrepreneurship education has been widely acknowledged. From the European Commission’s Green Paper on Entrepreneurship in Europe in 2003 to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development of United Nations, its importance for developing citizens’ entrepreneurial capacity has been emphasized, as adequate entrepreneurial skills, knowledge, and abilities can benefit the society as a whole. Besides, for specific population groups, such as migrants, the development of an entrepreneurial culture and entrepreneurial skills could have additional multiplier effects on themselves and the economies where they live in and operate. Although Europe has always been a pole of attraction for migrants, they continue to face serious socio-economic problems, such as high rates of unemployment. Their labor market integration consists a policy priority in the EU whether it is paid employment or self-employment. Although, there is a tend immigrants to show an entrepreneurial spirit in host societies, in many cases the results of their business endeavor are not the expected ones. Besides, the growing complexity of the entrepreneurial world requires the novice entrepreneur to be resilient, creative, and open-minded. At this point, the role of entrepreneurship education has to be stressed out since it does not only help them earn a sustainable income, but also it helps them gain skills and competences which can play an important role in terms of their social inclusion in the host societies. Entrepreneurial competence is one of the Key Competences for Lifelong Learning, setting out some skills necessary to work and live in the 21st Century, contributing besides employability also to personal development and active citizenship. Abstract

HELENA study group., [Aim]: To assess if a healthy diet might attenuate the positive sedentary–inflammation relation, whereas an unhealthy diet may increase the effect of sedentary behaviors on inflammatory biomarkers., [Methods]: In 618 adolescents (13–17 years) of the European HELENA study, data were available on body composition, a set of inflammation markers, and food intake assessed by a self-administered computerized 24 h dietary recall for 2 days. A 9-point Mediterranean diet score and an antioxidant-rich diet z-score were used as dietary indices and tested as moderators. A set of low-grade inflammatory characteristics was used as outcome: several cytokines in an inflammatory ratio (IL-6, IL-10, TNF-α, TGFβ-1), C-reactive protein, three cell-adhesion molecules (sVCAM-1, sICAM-1, sE-selectin), three cardiovascular risk markers (GGT, ALT, homocysteine) and three immune cell types (white blood cells, lymphocytes, CD3). Sedentary behaviors were self-reported and analyzed as total screen time. Multiple linear regression analyses tested moderation by diet in the sedentary behaviors–inflammation association adjusted for age, sex, country, adiposity (sum of six skinfolds), parental education, and socio-economic status., [Results]: Both diet scores, Mediterranean and antioxidant-rich diet, were significant protective moderators in the effect of sedentary behaviors on alanine-transaminase enzyme (P = 0.014; P = 0.027), and on the pro/anti-inflammatory cytokine ratio (P = 0.001; P = 0.004), but not on other inflammatory parameters., [Conclusion]: A higher adherence to the Mediterranean diet or an antioxidant-rich diet may attenuate the onset of oxidative stress signs associated by sedentary behaviors, whereas a poor diet seems to increase inflammation., The HELENA Study was carried out with the financial support of the European Community Sixth RTD Framework Programme (Contract FOODCT-2005-007034).
