Abstract : Teaching writing presents significant challenges, particularly in the evaluation of students' written work. Despite the considerable time that writing teachers invest in reading and comprehending their students’ compositions, they often struggle to provide fair assessments and appropriate scores, especially during examinations. To address these challenges, the present study explores the effectiveness of a paragraph analytic rubric as a tool for assessing students' writing. This rubric aims to unify evaluation criteria and ensure consistent scoring across all students. Developed by the researcher, the rubric has been implemented by second-year EFL writing teachers at the Department of English, Sétif 2 University, during the first semester writing exams over three consecutive years. In this action research project, teachers participated in a questionnaire and focus group discussion that assessed their satisfaction with the paragraph rubric, revealing positive feedback regarding its utility in grading exams. The findings from this research contribute to the establishment of clear assessment criteria for formal exams that require paragraph writing. By employing this rubric, the study seeks to enhance the reliability and fairness of writing assessments, ultimately improving both teaching practices and student learning outcomes in EFL contexts. The diplectanid monogenean Lamellodiscus echeneis (Wagener, 1857) is a specific and common gill parasite of the gilthead seabream Sparus aurata Linnaeus, 1758, in the Mediterranean Sea. Few isolated molecular studies of this monogenean have been conducted, and its population structure and genetic diversity are poorly understood. This study represents the first analysis of the population genetics of L. echeneis, isolated from wild and cage-reared gilthead seabream from fifteen localities in both the Southern (Tunisia) and Northern (Italy and Spain) regions of the Mediterranean Sea, using nuclear ITS rDNA markers and a partial fragment of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI). The phylogenetic trees based on the newly obtained dataset and the previously published sequences of L. echeneis corroborated the spread of only a single species throughout the Mediterranean Sea. The star-like haplotypes network, inferred by COI sequences, suggested a recent population expansion of L. echeneis. This is supported by the observed high haplotype diversity (Hd = 0.918) and low nucleotide diversity (Pi = 0.01595). Population structure-based AMOVA for two groups (the Adriatic Sea and the rest of the Mediterranean Sea) attributed 35.39% of the total variation to differences within populations, 16.63% to differences among populations within groups, and 47.99% to differences among groups. Fixation indices were significant, with a high FST value (0.64612), likely related to the divergence of the parasite populations from the Adriatic Sea and other Mediterranean regions. Phylogenetic analyses grouped all samples into the main clade corresponding to L. echeneis from several localities. This study provides insight into the genetic variation between L. echeneis populations, and did not show a clear genetic structure between populations of L. echeneis throughout Tunisian, Italian, and Spanish localities, which can be attributed to the considerable gene flow between the populations favoured by the potential for host dispersion within the Mediterranean Sea. Finally, haplotypes shared between wild and cage-reared hosts provided evidence for the potential for cross-infection between wild and farmed hosts in the Mediterranean Sea.

Les pratiques langagières des jeunes en Algérie témoignent d’une très grande créativité et innovation linguistiques caractérisées essentiellement par un métissage qui participe à la vitalité d’une « entre-langues », d’un sociolecte interstitiel (C.TRIMAILLE & J. BILLIEZ) que les jeunes créent et modifient tous les jours. Une entre- langues qui se caractérise entre autre par une abondante activité néologique grâce à l’application de différents procédés formels tels, la troncation, la suffixation, préfixation, composition, déformation, etc., ou sémantique (métonymies, glissement de sens).

Previously, we demonstrated that caloric restriction (CR) stimulates the synthesis, conjugation, secretion, and deconjugation of taurine and bile acids in the intestine, as well as their reuptake. Given taurine's potent antiobesogenic properties, this study aimed to assess whether the CR-induced shift in taurine homeostasis contributes to adipose tissue loss. To verify that, male C57Bl/6 mice were subjected to 20% CR or ad libitum feeding, with variations in cage bedding and gut microbiota conditions. Additional groups received taurine supplementation or were fed a low-taurine diet (LTD). The results showed that in CR animals, taurine derived from the intestine was preferentially trafficked to epididymal white adipose tissue (eWAT) over other tested organs. Besides increased levels of taurine transporter TauT, gene expression of Cysteine dioxygenase (Cdo) involved in taurine synthesis was upregulated in CR eWAT. Taurine concentration in adipocytes was inversely correlated with fat pad weight of CR mice. Different types of cage bedding did not impact eWAT taurine levels; however, the lack of bedding and consumption of a diet high in soluble fiber did. Depleting gut microbiota with antibiotics or inhibiting bile salt hydrolase (BSH) activity reduced WAT taurine concentration in CR mice. Taurine supplementation increased taurine levels in WAT and brown adipose tissue (BAT), promoting fat loss in CR animals. LTD consumption blunted WAT loss in CR animals, with negligible impact on BAT. The two anti-epidermal growth factor receptor monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) cetuximab and panitumumab are the pillars for the treatment of EGFR-positive, KRAS wild-type metastatic colorectal cancers. However, stability data of these mAbs are generally missing or incomplete. Here, we report for the first time an orthogonal analysis of the stability of cetuximab (Erbitux®) and panitumumab (Vectibix®), either undiluted vial leftovers or saline dilutions in polyolefin/polyamide infusion bags. All samples were stored at 2-8 °C protected from light, according to their summary of product characteristics (SmPCs). Alternatively, opened vials and preparations were maintained at 25 °C for 15 h, and then stored again at 2-8 °C protected from light to mimic a temporary interruption of the cold chain. Vial leftovers proved stable up to 180 days when stored according to their SmPCs, while compounded preparations in infusion bags maintained their physiochemical, biological and microbiological stability up to 30 days. Additionally, no changes were detected up to 30 days for the same samples undergoing a thermal excursion. Our results provide additional rationale to the SmPCs, crucial especially in the case of reassignment and pre-preparation of bags. Despite multimodal treatment with surgery and radiochemotherapy, the prognosis of glioblastoma remains poor, and practically all glioblastomas relapse. To date, no standard treatment exists for recurrent glioblastoma patients and traditional therapies have showed limited efficacy. Regorafenib is an oral multi-targeted tyrosine kinase inhibitor showing encouraging benefits in recurrent GBM patients enrolled in the REGOMA trial. We performed a large study to investigate clinical outcomes and the safety of regorafenib in a real-life population of recurrent glioblastoma patients. Patients receiving regorafenib outside clinical trials at the Veneto Institute of Oncology were retrospectively reviewed. The major inclusion criteria were: histologically confirmed diagnosis of glioblastoma, prior first line therapy according to "Stupp protocol", Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status score ≤1. According to the original schedule, patients received regorafenib 160 mg once daily for the first 3 weeks of each 4-week cycle. The primary endpoints of the study were overall survival and safety. A total of 54 consecutive patients were enrolled. The median age was 56, MGMT methylated status was found in 28 out of 53 available patients (52.8%), IDH mutation in 5 (9.3%) and 22 patients were receiving steroids at baseline. The median overall survival was 10.2 months (95% CI, 6.4-13.9), the OS-12 was 43%. Age, MGMT methylation status and steroid use at baseline were not statistically significant on a multivariate analysis for OS. Patients reporting a disease control as best response to regorafenib demonstrated a significant longer survival (24.8 months vs. 6.2 months for patients with progressive disease, p = 0.0001). Grade 3 drug-related adverse events occurred in 10 patients (18%); 1 patient (2%) reported a grade 4 adverse event (rash maculo-papular). No death was considered to be drug-related. This study reported the first large "real-life" experience of regorafenib in recurrent glioblastoma. Overall, our results are close to the ones reported in the previous phase 2 study, despite the fact that we had a longer survival. We showed the encouraging activity and tolerability of this treatment in recurrent glioblastoma patients when used as a second-line treatment.

Background: Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS) of the breast is an extremely rare, but aggressive subtype of sarcoma that can develop in radiotherapy (RT)-treated breast cancer patients. Due to the low incidence, there are many uncertainties regarding the adequate management of these tumors. We present a rare case of radiation-induced UPS in a 63-year-old woman who had undergone breast conserving therapy for invasive ductal carcinoma of the left breast, six years prior to presentation., Case Presentation: A 63-year-old woman presented with a rapidly growing left breast mass. She had been diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma of the left breast for which she underwent a left upper outer quadrantectomy and ipsilateral axillary dissection followed by RT, six years previously. During her routine oncologic follow-up, the mammography revealed a dense, nodular opacity with microcalcifications. The breast ultrasound (US) confirmed the presence of the nodule. US-guided fine needle aspiration biopsy was performed and the diagnosis of UPS was made, the reason for which the patient underwent wide local excision of the left breast., Conclusion: The diagnosis of RT-induced UPS is challenging and often missed due to the low incidence, long latency period, unspecific imaging findings, and difficulties in clinical and histological detection of these lesions. These tumors should be considered in differential diagnoses of rapidly-growing breast masses in previously RT-treated breast cancer patients, as they can mimic the local recurrence of the primary tumor. Since the prevalence of breast-conserving surgery followed by RT has been increasing, the careful monitoring of at risk patients is of utmost importance, as UPSs are highly aggressive tumors associated with very poor outcomes.

Background: One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass-Mini Gastric Bypass (OAGB-MGB) is rapidly gaining popularity and is currently being performed by an increasing number of bariatric surgeons worldwide. However, excessive postoperative weight loss and malnutrition still remain a major concern regarding this procedure. The aim of this observational retrospective study was to investigate whether a tailored biliopancreatic limb (BPL) length relative to small bowel length (SBL) is superior to a fixed BPL length of 200 cm in terms of weight loss results and nutritional deficiencies in morbidly obese patients 1 year following OAGB-MGB., Materials and Methods: Sixty-four patients who underwent OAGB-MGB were divided into two consecutive groups depending on the BPL length used: fixed 200-cm BPL and tailored BPL groups. Anthropometric measurements (%EWL, TWL, %TWL) and nutritional parameters (vitamin A, vitamin D 3 , vitamin B 12 , serum iron, serum albumin, total protein) were compared between the two groups at 1-year follow-up., Results: No statistically significant differences were observed between the patients in two groups in terms of %EWL, TWL, %TWL. The number of patients with deficiencies of vitamin A (p = 0.030), vitamin D 3 (p = 0.020), and albumin (p = 0.030) was significantly higher in fixed 200-cm BPL group as compared with tailored BPL group, 1 year following OAGB-MGB. No statistically significant differences were seen between the patients in two groups in terms of vitamin B 12, iron, and total protein deficiencies., Conclusion: Tailoring BPL length by bypassing about 40% of the SBL seems to be safe and effective. According to preliminary results of this study, a tailored BPL length relative to SBL is even likely to be superior to the fixed 200-cm BPL as it is associated with less nutritional deficiencies while providing similar weight loss results. Further randomized studies with larger sample sizes and longer follow-up periods are necessary to confirm the primary results of this study.

Angiogenesis is an essential process for tumor growth and metastasis. Inhibition of angiogenesis as an anticancer strategy has shown significant results in a plethora of tumors. Anti-angiogenic agents are currently part of many standard-of-care options for several metastatic gastrointestinal cancers. Bevacizumab, aflibercept, ramucirumab, and regorafenib have significantly improved both progression-free and overall survival in different lines of treatment in metastatic colorectal cancer. Second-line ramucirumab and third-line apatinib are effective anti-angiogenic treatments for patients with metastatic gastric cancer. Unfortunately, the anti-angiogenic strategy has major practical limitations: resistance inevitably develops through redundancy of signaling pathways and selection for subclonal populations adapted for hypoxic conditions. Anti-angiogenic agents may be more effective in combination therapies, with not only cytotoxics but also other emerging compounds in the anti-angiogenic class or in the separate class of the so-called vascular-disrupting agents. This review aims to provide an overview of the approved and "under development" anti-angiogenic compounds as well as the vascular-disrupting agents in the treatment of gastrointestinal cancers, focusing on the actual body of knowledge available on therapy challenges, pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic mechanisms, safety profiles, promising predictive biomarkers, and future perspectives.

Purposes: Management of staple-line leaks following laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) is challenging and controversial. Guidelines for leak treatment are not standardized and often involve multidisciplinary management by surgical, medical and radiological methods. Herein we present our experience and proposed strategy for handling leaks after LSG., Patients and Methods: Retrospective data regarding LSG performed from April 2012 to October 2017 at the Surgical Oncology Division, Department of Human Pathology in Adulthood and Childhood ''G. Barresi'', University Hospital "G. Martino", University of Messina, Italy, were reviewed. The management approaches and the surgical, endoscopic, and percutaneous procedures used were examined. Outcomes measured included the prevalence of gastric leaks, radiological features, related morbidities and mortalities, hospital stay and management., Results: LSG was performed in 310 patients. Eight patients were managed for gastric leak within the 5-year period: 5 (1.6% overall prevalence) from our division, 3 referred from another hospital. All cases were successfully treated conservatively with combined CT/US-guided drainage using a locking pigtail catheter and endoscopic gastric stent positioning. Endoscopic therapy included the use of fully covered self-expanding esophageal metal stents (Hanarostent® 24 cm; M.I. Tech, Seoul, Korea) in addition to pigtail drains (Drainage Catheter Locking Pigtail 8F/21cm; Tru-Set® Ure-Sil, Skokie, IL, USA). Complete closure of the leak was achieved in all patients. The mean time from presentation to healing was 74 days ± 37.76 (SD). None of the patients underwent remedial surgery., Conclusion: This study presents our management strategy for leak resolution in LSG patients. Based on our results, we strongly recommend the conservative and combined management of gastric leaks following LSG by endoscopic stenting and percutaneous drainage.

Objectives: Ipilimumab is the first licensed immune checkpoint inhibitor for treatment of melanoma. The promising results of the registration clinical study need confirmation in real practice and its clinical success comes together with a relevant budget impact due to the high price of this drug. The aim of this work is to describe a new model of economical sustainability of ipilimumab developed in an Italian reference center for melanoma treatment., Methods: This retrospective, observational, and monocentric study was carried out at the Veneto Institute of Oncology. Ipilimumab was administered to fifty-seven patients with advanced melanoma. Overall survival, progression free survival, and toxicity were evaluated. A local management procedure was evaluated together with the cost-saving strategies implemented by the Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA)., Results: We demonstrated that the use of ipilimumab for metastatic melanoma in real practice had an efficacy and toxicity similar to that reported in the literature. In this scenario, our management model (centralization of compounding + drug-day) permitted savings up to the 11.1 percent of the gross cost for the drug (calculated assuming that no cost saving procedures were applied) while the policy of cost containment designed by AIFA produced an additional 6.2 percent of savings., Conclusions: In real practice conditions, the centralized administration of ipilimumab allows to replicate the results of clinical studies and in the meantime to contain the cost associated with this drug. The local strategy of management can be readily applied to most of the high cost drugs compounded in the hospital pharmacy. Impact of findings on practice: (i) We describe a new model of economic sustainability (drug-day, centralization of compounding, payback systems) of an expensive and innovative drug, ipilimumab, for treatment of melanoma within an Italian cancer center. (ii) This pivotal study demonstrated that a cost containment strategy is feasible and it needs the cooperation of all healthcare providers (oncologists, pharmacists, nurses, and technicians) to guarantee the full efficiency of the process.

Background: In hereditary retinal degeneration, microglia cells become activated, migrate through the outer nuclear layer (ONL) and accumulate in the subretinal space. Although this inflammatory process is not likely to be responsible for the onset of photoreceptor apoptosis, cytotoxic substances secreted by activated microglia could potentially accelerate and perpetuate the degenerative process. Anti-inflammatory drugs have been shown to modulate the microglia response in neurodegenerative disorders and potentially ameliorate the disease progression in various animal model systems. In this study we wanted to test the impact of the most commonly used anti-inflammatory drugs (acetylsalicylate and prednisolone) on the microglia activation pattern, the rate of caspase-3-dependent photoreceptor apoptosis and the course of the degeneration in the retinal degeneration slow (rds) mouse retina., Methods: 169 pigmented rds mice and 30 CBA wild-type mice were used for this study. The treatment groups were injected daily with either acetylsalicylate (200 mg/kg) or prednisolone (2 mg/kg) i.p. from day 0 up to 3 months. Animals were sacrificed at days 10, 14, 16, 18, 20, 30, 40, 60 and 90. Cryoprotected frozen sections were immunostained with F4/80 and cleaved caspase-3 antibodies. The main outcome measures were the total microglia count in the subretinal space, the total cleaved caspase-3-positive cells in the ONL and the averaged number of photoreceptor rows in the midperipheral retina., Results: Neither acetylsalicylate nor prednisolone reduced subretinal microglia accumulation in the rds mouse degeneration model. Moreover, they aggravated migration and accumulation in the early time course. The apoptotic cascade started earlier and was more pronounced in both treatment groups compared to the control group. The pace of retinal degeneration was not reduced in the treatment groups compared to the untreated control. In contrast, acetylsalicylate did significantly accelerate the photoreceptor cell degeneration in comparison to the prednisolone (p < 0.001) and to the control group (p < 0.001)., Conclusions: Acetylsalicylate and prednisolone do not decrease the microglia response in the rds mouse and are not neuroprotective. More research is needed to clarify the molecular mechanisms which lead to photoreceptor cell death and to elucidate the complex role of microglia in inherited retinal degeneration., (Copyright (c) 2005 S. It has been reported that cytocidal activity of light-activated hematoporphyrin (HPD) within the cells might be exploited in the therapy of experimental and human cancer. As part of a project from this laboratory aimed to study some major biologic features of HPD, it was found that [3H]thymidine incorporation in tumor cells was highly inhibited as a consequence of HPD treatment. HPD-mediated inhibition, obtained by a treatment either in vitro or in vivo, was long lasting and independent of light activation. Cellular DNA synthesis was inhibited by non toxic doses of HPD which were not influential either cell viability or cell oncogenicity. In preliminary studies, HPD-treated cells accumulated in the G1 phase of the cell cycle as detected by cytofluorometric analysis. This finding is in keeping with a likely inhibition exerted in late G1 or at the beginning of the S phase of cell the cycle and might exclude a direct damage of the DNA synthetic machinery. Definitive loss of cell viability and cellular DNA inhibition was obtained immediately after the exposure of HPD-treated cells to He-Ne laser light. HPD-mediated cell lysis was dose dependent and in the other of magnitude of cytocidal doses in different cell systems. HPD antileukemic activity or HPD interactions with chemotherapeutic drugs was ruled out in L1210 leukemic mice.
