After a brief review of the literature on ecologically sustainable economic growth models, the paper provides some considerations on dematerialization and sheds some light on how it can become an engine of sustainable growth. Despite the proliferation of studies on ecologically sustainable economic growth theories and models, the debate on the design and implementation of green economic policies still lacks a shared basis and a truly comprehensive and integrated vision. We think that, from the theoretical point of view, this is due, at least in part, to an inadequate interaction among managerial, growth economic and industrial ecology literature. This paper aims to provide empirical evidence on the link between internal mobility and economic growth through the case of a European country, such as Poland. According to the study, the origin of immigration flows explains the trend of regional disparity. The estimates suggest that the impact of immigration from urban areas is positive and prevalent compared to the aggregate. Conversely, the influence from the rural areas is negative and slowing economic performance of the region of destination. These results demonstrate that there is heterogeneity in the flow of immigration and that the differences may depend on the level of human capital in the different places of origin.

The main purpose of this paper is to discuss the results of a regional economic impactanalysis aimed at quantifying the local macroeconomic effects (on employment and income)generated by the veterinary epidemiology centre «Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentaledell'Abruzzo e del Molise "G. Caporale"» between 1999 and 2010. Like many other researchcentres, the Institute participates in activities which produce impact on national and internationallevel, this makes drawing its field of action and pinpointing the part of the economiceffects that converges in its reference area very difficult. Therefore, in support of the economicimpact analysis, a re-composition of the Institute's transactions framework is proposed. Forthe economic impact assessment, we employed Black's model (2004), suitably adapted to takeinto account the structural characteristics of the reference area. Therefore, the overall economicimpact produced by the Institute is measured in terms of regional income. The transactionanalysis was performed using several indicators.

The study aims to identify socio-economic characteristics and structural change of regionsin the new European Union Member States. The convergence and growth are central aspectsof the investigation. In this context, it intends to pursue a dual track analysis: a) highlight theextent and causes of regional growth differences by making a comparative evaluation with theregions of the old members of the eu, b) identify the relationships between economic growthand productive structure. Based on the analysis of the causes of growth, will head up the contributionof sectoral change on the evolution of productivity. The results will provide guidanceon policy interventions.

The paper aims at proposing a sectoral «shift and share» analysis of the labour productivity growth of the Italian Regions through a decomposition in two different components: an intra-sectoral one, which relates to productivity gains achieved thanks to the internal improvements of productivity in each sector; a structural one, which refers to productivity gains due to changes in sectors composition. The findings suggest that the role of the structural change (characterized by a marked tertiarization process) has been, with few regional exceptions, predominant in the period 1980-2004 and decisive in the period 2000-2007. In many cases, the structural change positive contribution to total productivity growth has concealed a decline of the productivity within sectors (in particular as far as the 2000-2007 period is concerned). In addition, the employment has moved from sectors with «low levels - high growth rates» of productivity (manufacturing) to «high levels - low growth rates» of productivity (services), thus supporting Baumol's structural burden hypothesis.

The article aims at enucleating the main issues of the current debate on the strategies by which to face the crisis in Italy and place solid basis for an eco-sustainable evolution of industrial systems. More specifically, it is underlined the relevance of the "industrial ecology" approach, the importance of entrepreneurial initiatives and the fundamental role that regulatory instruments can play in facilitating the transition.

A durable economic progress can take place only if environmental sustainability of industrial activities improves. The purpose of this paper is to reconsider the structural and policy changes that could ensure growth and competitiveness in a scenario in which environmental constraints represent the major concern. More specifically, we suggest to focus on two relevant questions: first, the reorganisation (above all in terms of sectoral interdependence) that our production system is undergoing as a consequence of our manufacturing firms' strategic responses; secondly, the strategies and investment decisions planned by firms operating at different stages of the energy vertical chain and in related green industries. Even though at a preliminary level, some policy implications are proposed.

In this article, a rather comprehensive analysis of the animation industry is provided. I start describing technological and business characteristics of animated products, and then I concentrate on the many interesting economic issues they raise both on the supply and demand side. Just to mention a few, we could think about the global dimension of the market, the multifaceted contractual relations between buyers (such as TV broadcasters) and production studios, the significance of co-productions (above all those carried out at international level) and licensing. Throughout the analysis, I dedicate special attention to the Italian situation. As our animation industry structure is rather weak (in comparison to those in other countries), more effective public policies should be promoted and coherently implemented. In particular, public intervention, which is even more justified from a cultural perspective, would need specific funding and well-targeted instruments.

The enforcement of competition law suffers from the lack of adequate tools to study the markets in which innovation and, more generally, economic change are the main drivers of competition. In such cases, the traditional (microeconomic) analytical framework, based as it is on the trade-off between static and dynamic efficiency, is only able to provide unsatisfactory answers, affected by structural discretionality. This inadequate outcome originates from the fact that the underlying theory is not fit for practical implementation. The article aims at providing a description of the fundamental features of change-based competition - and of its efficiency in terms of dynamic social welfare - as derived from the mainstream literature on management science. This framework is then used to develop some general principles for the enforcement of competition rules.

This article provides a comprehensive framework of the common features of pharmaceutical research, with a particular focus on the developments brought about by the widespread affirmation of the biotechnological paradigm. The study follows a layout inspired by the current regulatory setting: applied research (i.e. research activities carried out in order to find out economically appealing compounds), preclinical development (i.e. tests run in order to obtain the formal authorization for human experimentation), clinic experimentation (i.e. studies conducted on either ill or sane human beings carried out till the achievement of a commercial license) and, lastly, production/commercial exploitation. For each phase the main technological features, the regulatory framework, and the strategic choices firms have to undertake are examined. The article also provides some general remarks on the relationships between the evolution in research techniques and the organization of pharmaceutical industry.

The article analyses the role of the regulatory agencies within the Italian institutional system, with a particular concern to their relationship with political bodies. The discussion stems from some methodological weaknesses of the law studies on the issue. They are probably among the main causes for the imperfection of the law proposals that recently addressed the problem in Italy. Starting from a vision of the very first roots of the democratic system based upon a Popperian methodological framework, the article points out the role of bureaucratic agents, introduces the distinction among "implemental" and "adaptive" bureaucracies and analyses the issue of the efficient choice the political power has to make between the two kinds of agents. Finally, the paper outlines the question of the consistency between the degree of delegation and the level of control.
