Search

Recent studies on topological flat bands and their fractional states have revealed increasing similarities between moir\'e flat bands and Landau levels (LLs). For instance, like the lowest LL, topological exact flat bands with ideal quantum geometry can be constructed using the same holomorphic function structure, $\psi_{\mathbf{k}} = f_{\mathbf{k}-\mathbf{k}_0}(z) \psi_{\mathbf{k}_0}$, where $f_{\mathbf{k}}(z)$ is a holomorphic function. This holomorphic structure has been the foundation of existing knowledge on constructing ideal topological flat bands. In this Letter, we report a new family of ideal topological flat bands where the $f$ function does not need to be holomorphic. We provide both model examples and universal principles, as well as an analytic method to construct the wavefunctions of these flat bands, revealing their universal properties, including ideal quantum geometry and a Chern number of $C = \pm 2$ or higher.

The quantum metric of single-particle wave functions in topological flatbands plays a crucial role in determining the stability of fractional Chern insulating (FCI) states. Here, we unravel that the quantum metric causes the many-body Chern number of the FCI states to deviate sharply from the expected value associated with partial filling of the single-particle topological flatband. Furthermore, the variation of the quantum metric in momentum space induces band dispersion through interactions, affecting the stability of the FCI states. This causes a reentrant transition into the Fermi liquid from the FCI phase as the interaction strength increases., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures

The star-critical Ramsey number is a refinement of the concept of a Ramsey number. In this paper, we give equivalent criteria for which the star-critical Ramsey number vanishes. Next, we provide a new general lower bound for multicolor star-critical Ramsey numbers whenever it does not vanish. As an application, we evaluate $r_*(P_k, P_3, P_3)$, where $P_n$ is a path of order $n$. Bandyapadhyay et al. introduced the generalized minimum-membership geometric set cover (GMMGSC) problem [SoCG, 2023], which is defined as follows. We are given two sets $P$ and $P'$ of points in $\mathbb{R}^{2}$, $n=\max(|P|, |P'|)$, and a set $\mathcal{S}$ of $m$ axis-parallel unit squares. The goal is to find a subset $\mathcal{S}^{*}\subseteq \mathcal{S}$ that covers all the points in $P$ while minimizing $\mathsf{memb}(P', \mathcal{S}^{*})$, where $\mathsf{memb}(P', \mathcal{S}^{*})=\max_{p\in P'}|\{s\in \mathcal{S}^{*}: p\in s\}|$. We study GMMGSC problem and give a $16$-approximation algorithm that runs in $O(m^2\log m + m^2n)$ time. Our result is a significant improvement to the $144$-approximation given by Bandyapadhyay et al. that runs in $\tilde{O}(nm)$ time. GMMGSC problem is a generalization of another well-studied problem called Minimum Ply Geometric Set Cover (MPGSC), in which the goal is to minimize the ply of $\mathcal{S}^{*}$, where the ply is the maximum cardinality of a subset of the unit squares that have a non-empty intersection. The best-known result for the MPGSC problem is an $8$-approximation algorithm by Durocher et al. that runs in $O(n + m^{8}k^{4}\log k + m^{8}\log m\log k)$ time, where $k$ is the optimal ply value [WALCOM, 2023]., Comment: To appear in CALDAM 2024

So-called fragile topological states of matter challenge our conventional notion of topology by lacking the robustness typically associated with topological protection, thereby displaying elusive manifestations that are difficult to harness for wave control. In this work, we leverage the recent discovery of fragile topological states in special classes of structural kagome lattices to document the availability of domain wall elastic wave modes that are directly traceable to fragile topology and, yet, exhibit remarkably robust signatures. We design twisted kagome bi-domains comprising two topologically distinct sublattices - one trivial and the other fragile topological - sharing a common bandgap and meeting at a domain wall. The two phases are achieved via carefully engineered surface cut patterns that modify the band landscape of the underlying lattices in complementary fashions, leading to dichotomous irreps landscapes. Under these circumstances, a domain wall-bound mode emerges within the shared bandgap and displays remarkable robustness against domain wall orientation and defects. We corroborate these findings via k.p Hamiltonian and Jackiw-Rabbi analysis and validate them experimentally through laser vibrometry tests on a prototype endowed with water jet-induced perforation patterns.

The small Davenport constant ${\mathsf{d}}(G)$ of a finite group $G$ is defined to be the maximal length of a sequence over $G$ which has no non-trivial product-one subsequence. In this paper, we prove that ${\mathsf{d}}(G) = 6$ for the non-abelian group of order $27$ and exponent $3$ and thereby establish a conjecture by Gao and Zhuang for this group.

We study the influence of spatial symmetries on the appearance and the number of exact flat bands (FBs) in single and bilayer systems with Dirac or quadratic band crossing points, and systematically classify all possible number of exact flat bands in systems with different point group symmetries. We find that a maximum of 6 FBs can be protected by symmetries, and show an example of 6 FBs in a system with QBCP under periodic strain field of $\mathcal{C}_{6v}$ point group symmetry. All known examples of exact FBs in single and bilayer systems fall under this classification, including chiral twisted bilayer graphene, and new examples of exact FBs are found. We show the construction of wavefunctions for the highly degenerate FBs, and prove that any such set of FBs are $\mathds{Z}_2$ nontrivial, where all WFs polarized on one sublattice together have Chern number $C = 1$ and WFs polarized on the other sublattice together have $C = -1$. These bands also satisfy ideal non-Abelian quantum geometry condition. We further show that, just like in TBG, topological heavy fermion description of the FBs with higher degeneracy is possible as long as the Berry curvature distribution is peaked around a point in the BZ.

Non-equilibrium and active effects in mesoscopic scale systems have heralded a new era of scientific inquiries, whether concerning meta-materials or biological systems such as bacteria and cellular components. At mesoscopic scales, experimental and theoretical treatments of membranes, and other quasi-two-dimensional elastic surfaces cannot generically ignore Brownian motion and other thermal effects. In this paper we aim to study the behavior of thermally fluctuating 2-D elastic membranes possessing odd elastic moduli embedded in higher dimensions. We implement an isotropic generalization of the elastic tensor that includes odd elastic moduli, $K_{odd}$ and $A_{odd}$, that break conservation of energy and angular momentum respectively, due to cite{scheibner2020odd}. Naturally this introduces active and non-equilibrium effects. Passive equilibrium thermalized elastic membranes possess effective (renormalized) Lam\'e coefficients that reduce with increasing system size and a diverging effective bending rigidity. Introducing two odd elastic moduli means that deformations from a reference state can induce chiral forces that cannot be derived from a Hamiltonian. Thus, the behavior of odd elastic membranes must instead be investigated with Langevin equations. If fluctuation-dissipation relations hold, we calculate via the renormalization group that at long length scales, active effects due to $K_{odd}$ can be effectively ignored whereas $A_{odd}$ cannot. To validate these findings, we developed an advanced force implementation methodology, inspired by the $(T)$-scheme prevalent in vertex models. This contributed to a new method for the simulation of elastic membranes in higher dimensions, as detailed recently in \cite{matoz2020wrinkle}. The novelty of the method is that microscopic/discrete and continuum in-plane elastic moduli are one-to-one and thus no coarse-graining is needed.

We investigate the effect of thermal fluctuations on the mechanical properties of nanotubes by employing tools from statistical physics. For 2D sheets it was previously shown that thermal fluctuations effectively renormalize elastic moduli beyond a characteristic temperature-dependent thermal length scale (a few nanometers for graphene at room temperature), where the bending rigidity increases, while the in-plane elastic moduli reduce in a scale-dependent fashion with universal power law exponents. However, the curvature of nanotubes produces new phenomena. In nanotubes, competition between stretching and bending costs associated with radial fluctuations introduces a characteristic elastic length scale, which is proportional to the geometric mean of the radius and effective thickness. Beyond elastic length scale, we find that the in-plane elastic moduli stop renormalizing in the axial direction, while they continue to renormalize in the circumferential direction beyond the elastic length scale albeit with different universal exponents. The bending rigidity, however, stops renormalizing in the circumferential direction at the elastic length scale. These results were verified using molecular dynamics simulations.

Topological insulators hold promises to realize exotic quantum phenomena in electronic, photonic, and phononic systems. Conventionally, topological indices, such as winding numbers, have been used to predict the number of topologically protected domain-wall states (TPDWSs) in topological insulators, a signature of the topological phenomenon called bulk-edge correspondence. Here, we demonstrate theoretically and experimentally that the number of TPDWSs in a mechanical Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model can be higher than the winding number depending on the strengths of beyond-nearest-neighbor interactions, revealing the breakdown of the winding number prediction. Alternatively, we resort to the Berry connection to accurately characterize the number and spatial features of TPDWSs in SSH systems, further confirmed by the Jackiw-Rebbi theory proving that the multiple TPDWSs correspond to the bulk Dirac cones. Our findings deepen the understanding of complex network dynamics and offer a generalized paradigm for precise TPDWS prediction in potential applications involving localized vibrations, such as drug delivery and quantum computing.

Maxwell lattices, where the number of degrees of freedom equals the number of constraints, are known to host topologically-protected zero-frequency modes and states of self stress, characterized by a topological index called topological polarization. In this letter, we show that in addition to these known topological modes, with the help of a mirror symmetry, the inherent chiral symmetry of Maxwell lattices creates another topological index, the mirror-graded winding number (MGWN). This MGWN is a higher order topological index, which gives rise to topological zero modes and states of self stress at mirror-invariant domain walls and corners between two systems with different MGWNs. We further show that two systems with same topological polarization can have different MGWNs, indicating that these two topological indices are fundamentally distinct.

The flat band is a key ingredient for the realization of interesting quantum states for novel functionalities. In this work, we investigate the conditions for the flat band in both monolayer and bilayer graphene under periodic strain. We find topological nearly flat bands with homogeneous distribution of Berry curvature in both systems. The quantum metric of the nearly flat band closely resembles that for Landau levels. For monolayer graphene, the strain field can be regarded as an effective gauge field, while for Bernal-stacked (AB-stacked) bilayer graphene, its role is beyond the description of gauge field. We also provide an understanding of the origin of the nearly flat band in monolayer graphene in terms of the Jackiw-Rebbi model for Dirac fermions with sign-changing mass. Our work suggests strained graphene as a promising platform for strongly correlated quantum states.

Biedl et al. introduced the minimum ply cover problem in CG 2021 following the seminal work of Erlebach and van Leeuwen in SODA 2008. They showed that determining the minimum ply cover number for a given set of points by a given set of axis-parallel unit squares is NP-hard, and gave a polynomial time $2$-approximation algorithm for instances in which the minimum ply cover number is bounded by a constant. Durocher et al. recently presented a polynomial time $(8 + \epsilon)$-approximation algorithm for the general case when the minimum ply cover number is $\omega(1)$, for every fixed $\epsilon > 0$. They divide the problem into subproblems by using a standard grid decomposition technique. They have designed an involved dynamic programming scheme to solve the subproblem where each subproblem is defined by a unit side length square gridcell. Then they merge the solutions of the subproblems to obtain the final ply cover. We use a horizontal slab decomposition technique to divide the problem into subproblems. Our algorithm uses a simple greedy heuristic to obtain a $(27+\epsilon)$-approximation algorithm for the general problem, for a small constant $\epsilon>0$. Our algorithm runs considerably faster than the algorithm of Durocher et al. We also give a fast $2$-approximation algorithm for the special case where the input squares are intersected by a horizontal line. The hardness of this special case is still open. We study flat bands and their topology in 2D materials with quadratic band crossing points (QBCPs) under periodic strain. In contrast to Dirac points in graphene, where strain acts as a vector potential, strain for QBCPs serves as a director potential with angular momentum $\ell=2$. We prove that when the strengths of the strain fields hit certain ``magic" values, exact flat bands with $C=\pm 1$ emerge at charge neutrality point in the chiral limit, in strong analogy to magic angle twisted bilayer graphene. These flat bands have ideal quantum geometry for the realization of fractional Chern insulators, and they are always fragile topological. The number of flat bands can be doubled for certain point group, and the interacting Hamiltonian is exactly solvable at integer fillings. We further demonstrate the stability of these flat bands against deviations from the chiral limit, and discuss possible realization in 2D materials.

Recent years have seen the discovery of systems featuring fragile topological states. These states of matter lack certain protection attributes typically associated with topology and are therefore characterized by weaker signatures that make them elusive to observe. Moreover, they are typically confined to special symmetry classes and, in general, rarely studied in the context of phononic media. In this article, we theoretically predict the emergence of fragile topological bands in the spectrum of a twisted kagome elastic lattice with three-fold rotational symmetry, in the so-called self-dual configuration. A necessary requirement is that the lattice is a structural metamaterial, in which the role of the hinges is played by elastic finite-thickness ligaments. The interplay between the edge modes appearing in the bandgaps bounding the fragile topological states is also responsible for the emergence of corner modes at selected corners of a finite hexagonal domain, which qualifies the lattice as a second-order topological insulator. We demonstrate our findings through a series of experiments via 3D Scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometry conducted on a physical prototype. Atomically thin sheets, such as graphene, are widely used in nanotechnology. Recently they have also been used in applications including kirigami and self-folding origami, where it becomes important to understand how they respond to external loads. Motivated by this, we investigate how isotropic sheets respond to uniaxial tension by employing the self-consistent screening analysis method and molecular dynamics simulations. Previously, it was shown that for freely suspended sheets thermal fluctuations effectively renormalize elastic constants, which become scale-dependent beyond a characteristic thermal length scale (a few nanometers for graphene at room temperature), beyond which the bending rigidity increases, while the in-plane elastic constants reduce with universal power law exponents. For sheets under uniaxial tension, $\sigma_{11}$, we find that beyond a stress-dependent length scale, the effective in-plane elastic constants become strongly anisotropic and scale differently along the axis of uni-axial stress and orthogonal to it. The bending rigidities on the other hand will not exhibit any anomalous behavior beyond this stress-dependent length scale. In addition, for moderate tensions we find a universal non-linear stress-strain relation. For large uni-axial tensions, the Young's modulus of the bare elastic material is recovered.

Topological mechanical metamaterials have enabled new ways to control stress and deformation propagation. Exemplified by Maxwell lattices, they have been studied extensively using a linearized formalism. Herein, we study a two-dimensional topological Maxwell lattice by exploring its large deformation quasi-static response using geometric numerical simulations and experiments. We observe spatial nonlinear wave-like phenomena such as harmonic generation, localized domain switching, amplification-enhanced frequency conversion, and solitary waves. We further map our linearized, homogenized system to a non-Hermitian, non-reciprocal, one-dimensional wave equation, revealing an equivalence between the deformation fields of two-dimensional topological Maxwell lattices and nonlinear dynamical phenomena in one-dimensional active systems. Our study opens a new regime for topological mechanical metamaterials and expands their application potential in areas including adaptive and smart materials, and mechanical logic, wherein concepts from nonlinear dynamics may be used to create intricate, tailored spatial deformation and stress fields greatly exceeding conventional elasticity., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

In this article, we prove that the Schur Multiplier of a finite $p$-group of maximal class of order $p^n ~(4 \leq n \leq p+1)$ is elementary abelian. The case $n = p+1$ settles a question raised by Primo\v{z} Moravec in an earlier article.

For a finite group $G$, the power graph $\Gamma_G$ is a graph whose set of vertices is equal to $G$ and two distinct elements of $G$ are adjacent if and only if one of them is a positive integer power of the other. An $L(2,1)$-labelling of $\Gamma_G$ is an integer-valued function defined on $G$ so that the distance between the images of two adjacent vertices (resp. vertices with distance two) are at least two (resp. at least one). The lambda number $\lambda(G)$ is defined to be the least difference between the largest and the smallest integer values assigned to the vertices of $\Gamma_G$ for all possible $L(2,1)$-labellings of $\Gamma_G$. It is known that $\lambda(G) \geq |G|$. In this paper, we prove that if $G$ is a finite simple group, then $\lambda(G) = |G|$ except when $G$ is cyclic of prime order. This settles a partial classification of finite groups $G$ that achieve the lower bound on of lambda number.

An $L(2,1)$-labelling of a finite graph $\Gamma$ is a function that assigns integer values to the vertices $V(\Gamma)$ of $\Gamma$ (colouring of $V(\Gamma)$ by ${\mathbb{Z}}$) so that the absolute difference of two such values is at least $2$ for adjacent vertices and is at least $1$ for vertices which are precisely distance $2$ apart. The lambda number $\lambda(\Gamma)$ of $\Gamma$ measures the least number of integers needed for such a labelling (colouring). A power graph $\Gamma_G$ of a finite group $G$ is a graph with vertex set as the elements of $G$ and two vertices are joined by an edge if and only if one of them is a positive integer power of the other. It is known that $\lambda(\Gamma_G) \geq |G|$ for any finite group. In this paper we show that if $G$ is a finite group of a prime power order, then $\lambda(\Gamma_G) = |G|$ if and only if $G$ is neither cyclic nor a generalized quaternion $2$-group. We present a method for predicting the linear response deformation of finite and semi-infinite 2D solid structures with circular holes and inclusions by employing the analogies with image charges and induction in electrostatics. Charges in electrostatics induce image charges near conductive boundaries and an external electric field induces polarization (dipoles, quadrupoles, and other multipoles) of conductive and dielectric objects. Similarly, charges in elasticity induce image charges near boundaries and external stress induces polarization (quadrupoles and other multipoles) inside holes and inclusions. Stresses generated by these induced elastic multipoles as well as stresses generated by their images near boundaries then lead to interactions between holes and inclusions and with their images, which induce additional polarization and thus additional deformation of holes and inclusions. We present a method that expands induced polarization in a series of elastic multipoles, which systematically takes into account the interactions of inclusions and holes with the external field, between them, and with their images. Elastic materials with holes and inclusions are important in a large variety of contexts ranging from construction material to biological membranes. More recently, they have also been exploited in mechanical metamaterials, where the geometry of highly deformable structures is responsible for their unusual properties, such as negative Poisson's ratio, mechanical cloaking, and tunable phononic band gaps. Understanding how such structures deform in response to applied external loads is thus crucial for designing novel mechanical metamaterials. Here we present a method for predicting the linear response of infinite 2D solid structures with circular holes and inclusions by employing analogies with electrostatics. Pseudo-Newtonian Potential has always been a useful tool to discuss the motion of a particle in space-time to avoid the tedious and nearly impossible nonlinear computations coming from the field equations of general relativity. Mukhopadhyay, in 2002, has introduced such a pseudo-Newtonian potential for rotating Kerr black hole which is efficient enough to replicate the scenario of the classical mechanics. But there was no such model to explain the dark energy realm. In 2016 S Ghosh introduced a Lagrangian for such rotating black hole embedded in quintessence. in this article we obtained a pseudo-Newtonian force for this new black hole solution embedded quintessence. This paper introduces a simple computational scheme to evaluate a pseudo-Newtonian force for any space-time metric. This model possesses at most $4.95 \%$ error corresponding to general relativistic results. Since we took a popular agent of dark energy, i.e., quintessence into account, this is a general form of pseudo-Newtonian force to explain late time accelerating universe. In this paper, it also has been discussed about the difference between the pseudo-Newtonian force with and without dark energy effect. In this survey article, we try to summarize the known results towards the long-standing non-inner automorphism conjecture, which states that every finite non-abelian $p$-group has a non-inner automorphism of order $p$.

In this paper, we are presenting a new approach to car theft detection and arresting system using RFID technology. The main purpose of this paper is to establish the concept and the architecture of the whole system. The system which we are able to develop still now is basically a demonstration model or a prototype of the system. The key thing in this system is the passive RFID tags which will be hidden inside the car and act as a unique identification number for the car. The information of all such tags will be maintained by a centralized server. In case of any car being theft, a report should be logged into the server by an authorized user and a network of RFID scanners installed in different check post, traffic signal or toll plazas in the city will search for the reported tag. Once it is found necessary security system would be activated for arresting the car.

The genus spectrum of a finite group $G$ is a set of integers $g \geq 2$ such that $G$ acts on a closed orientable compact surface $\Sigma_g$ of genus $g$ preserving the orientation. In this paper we complete the study of spectrum sets of finite $p$-groups of co-class $1$, where $p$ is an odd prime. As a consequence we prove that given an order $p^n$ and exponent $p^e$, there are at the most eight genus spectrum despite the infinite growth of their isomorphism types along $(n,e)$. Based on these results we also classify these groups which has unique stable upper genus $\sigma_e(p^e) - p^e$, where $\sigma_e(p)$ is a constant that depends on $p$ and $e$.

Let $G_{m,n,k} = \mathbb{Z}_m \ltimes_k \mathbb{Z}_n$ be the split metacyclic group, where $k$ is a unit modulo $n$. We derive an upper bound for the diameter of $G_{m,n,k}$ using an arithmetic parameter called the \textit{weight}, which depends on $n$, $k$, and the order of $k$. Let $\Gamma(G,S)$ denote the Cayley graph of a group $G$ with respect to a set $S \subset G$. In this paper, we analyze the spectral properties of the Cayley graphs $\mathcal{T}_{m,n,k} = \Gamma(\mathbb{Z}_m \ltimes_k \mathbb{Z}_n, \{(\pm 1,0),(0,\pm 1)\})$, where $m,n \geq 3$ and $k^m \equiv 1 \pmod{n}$. We show that the adjacency matrix of $\mathcal{T}_{m,n,k}$, upto relabeling, is a block circulant matrix, and we also obtain an explicit description of these blocks. By extending a result due to Walker-Mieghem to Hermitian matrices, we show that $\mathcal{T}_{m,n,k}$ is not Ramanujan, when either $m > 8$, or $n \geq 400$., Comment: 18 pages, 1 table

The genus spectrum of a finite group $G$ is the set of all $g$ such that $G$ acts faithfully on a compact Riemann surface of genus $g$. It is an open problem to find a general description of the genus spectrum of the groups in interesting classes, such as the abelian $p$-groups. Motivated by the work of Talu for odd primes $p$, we develop a general combinatorial machinery, for arbitrary primes, to obtain a structured description of the so-called reduced genus spectrum of abelian $p$-groups. We have a particular view towards how to generally find the reduced minimum genus in this class of groups, determine the complete genus spectrum for a large subclass of abelian $p$-groups, consisting of those groups in a certain sense having `large' defining invariants, and use this to construct infinitely many counterexamples to Talu's Conjecture, saying that an abelian $p$-group is recoverable from its genus spectrum.
