A study was conducted to evaluate four different cholecalciferol levels (NRC; modified), using diets supplemented with 200 (control), 1500, 2500 or 3500 IU/kg of cholecalciferol (VIT-D3). Each treatment was assigned to 3 pens of 17 broiler chicks of a commercial strain grown in an open-sided house with sidewall curtains. At 21and 42 days, BW and feed conversion (FCR) were determined. At 42 days, five birds per pen were slaughtered to evaluate tibia and toe ash of the right leg, and incidence and severity of tibial dyschondroplasia (TD) of the left tibia and also measured dressing percentage and breast meat yield. Serum calcium and phosphorus concentrations were also determined. Haemagglutination inhibition antibody titre against Newcastle disease virus and lymphoid organs weight/body weight ratio were also determined. At both 21 and 42 days, the BW of birds fed 1500 IU/kg to 3500 IU/kg of VIT-D3 was significantly greater than birds fed 200 IU/kg. Similarly, better FCR was observed in birds those fed diets of high level of VIT-D3. No significant difference was observed for mortality at any age. Better dressing percentage and breast meat yield were noted in birds fed diets containing 2500 or 3500 IU/kg VIT-D3. Both tibia and toe ash contents were increased (p < 0.05) progressively with increased concentrations of cholecalciferol in feed. The incidence of TD (percentage of birds having TD scores greater than zero) was significantly (p < 0.05) influenced by level of 3500 IU VIT-D3/kg at 42 days. The severity of TD in birds fed diets containing 200 IU/kg VIT-D3 was apparently higher than birds fed diets with higher levels of VIT-D3. Concentrations of calcium and phosphorus minerals in the serum increased progressively with the high level of VIT-D3 supplementation to birds at both 21 and 42 days of age. Feeding levels of 1500 or 3500 IU of vitamin D3 did positively affect the immune system within the parameters measured. It may be concluded that performance, bone mineralization, blood chemistry and immunity against disease in broilers could be maintained when supplementing high level of VIT-D3 incorporated in broiler diets. Wound healing is a natural body response to injury and consists of three steps; Inflammation, proliferation and remodeling. Natural products have always been attractive in pharmacy and drug delivery and have shown higher patient compliance in some treatments. Aloe vera and licorice extract have each been used to improve and accelerate wound healing. It seems that combination of these two natural products may show better and effective results. Aloe vera gel and licorice extract powder were standardized with their major and important components, Glycyrrhizin and Glucomannan, respectively. Three different polymers in three different concentrations were used to prepare topical gels containing Aloe vera gel and licorice extract powder. Gels were examined for different properties such as appearance, pH, viscosity, spreadability, drug content and in vitro release. Optimized formulations contained carbopol 2% (F3) and CMC 3% (F5) with pH (5.92 and 5.69), spreadability (51 and 55 mm), a shear thinning manner and in vitro release within 8 hours proper for topical use. Preclinical studies should be processed to determine the suitability of these gels for wound healing.

Robotic surgery offers various advantages over conventional surgery that includes less bleeding, less trauma, and more precise tissue cutting. However, even surgeons who use the best commercially available surgical robotic systems complain about the absence of haptic feedback in such systems. In this paper, we present the findings of our project to overcome this shortcoming of surgical robotic systems, in which a haptic-enabled robotic system based on master and slave topology is designed and developed. To detect real-time intrusion at the slave end, haptic feedback is implemented along with a programmable system on chip, functioning as an embedded system for processing information. In order to obtain real-time haptic feedback, force and motion sensors are mounted on each joint of the master and slave units. At the master end, results are displayed through a graphical user interface, along with the physical feeling of intrusion at the slave part. Apart from the obvious applications of the current system in robotic surgery, it could also be used in designing more intuitive video games with further precise haptic feedback mechanisms. Moreover, the results presented in our work should pave the way for further scientific investigation, to provide even better haptic mechanisms.

Introduction: Ovarian tumors are important in perimenopausal women as they are more likely to be malignant. Aim: The aim was to study the various histological pattern of ovarian tumors and their clinical presentation in perimenopausal age group. Materials and Methods: The study was carried out in the departments of Gynaecology and Obstetrics and Pathology in a teaching hospital for two years from June 2007 to May 2009. All patients presented with ovarian tumors of perimenopausal age group (40- 50 years) were included. Detailed clinical information, radiological findings and histopathological reports were recorded. Results: A total 52 ovarian tumors were included in this study. Most common histological types were surface epithelial tumors (92.3%), out of which 54.2% were benign, 41.7% were malignant and 4.2% were borderline. Serous cystadenoma was the most common benign tumor and serous cystadenocarcinoma was the commonest malignant tumor. Abdominal discomfort was the commonest presenting symptom both in benign and malignant tumors (85.7% and 45.4% respectively). Most of the malignant tumors were presented in stage III (50%), followed by stage II (27.3%). Conclusion: In this: study, we found a relatively higher proportion of ovarian malignancies. So, any ovarian tumor in perimenopausal age group is more likely to be malignant and that require a thorough evaluation and management. Further research should be advocated in this field. The increasing levels of cadmium (Cd) pollution in agricultural soil reduces plant growth and yield. This study aims to determine the impact of green synthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) on the physiochemical activities, nutrition, growth, and yield of Zea mays L. under Cd stress conditions. For this purpose, ZnO-NPs (450 ppm and 600 ppm) synthesized from Syzygium aromaticum were applied through foliar spray to Z. mays and also used as seed priming agents. A significant decline in plant height (35.24%), biomass production (43.86%), mineral content, gas exchange attributes, and yield (37.62%) was observed in Cd-spiked plants compared to the control. While, 450 ppm ZnO-NPs primed seed increased plant height (18.46%), total chlorophyll (80.07%), improved ascorbic acid (25.10%), DPPH activity (26.66%), and soil mineral uptake (Mg +2 (38.86%), K + (27.83%), and Zn +2 (43.68%) as compared to plants only spiked with Cd. On the contrary, the foliar-applied 450 ppm ZnO-NPs increased plant height (8.22%), total chlorophyll content (73.59%), ascorbic acid (21.39%), and DPPH activity (17.61%) and yield parameters; cob diameter (19.45%), and kernels numbers 6.35% enhanced compared to plants that were spiked only with Cd. The findings of the current study pave the way for safer and more cost-effective crop production in Cd-stressed soils by using green synthesized NPs and provide deep insights into the underlying mechanisms of NPs treatment at the molecular level to provide compelling evidence for the use of NPs in improving plant growth and yield.

Plasmodium falciparum , which causes life-threatening cerebral malaria has rapidly gained resistance against most frontline anti-malarial drugs, thereby generating an urgent need to develop novel therapeutic approaches. Conducting in-depth investigations on Plasmodium in its native form is challenging, thereby necessitating the requirement of an efficient model system. In line, mounting evidence suggests that Dictyostelium discoideum retains both conformational and functional properties of Plasmodium proteins, however, the true potential of Dictyostelium as a host system is not fully explored. In the present study, we have exploited comparative genomics as a tool to extract, compare, and curate the extensive data available on the organism-specific databases to evaluate if D. discoideum can be established as a prime model system for functional characterization of P. falciparum genes. Through comprehensive in silico analysis, we report that despite the presence of adaptation-specific genes, the two display noteworthy conservation in the housekeeping genes, signaling pathway components, transcription regulators, and post-translational modulators. Furthermore, through orthologue analysis, the known, potential, and novel drug target genes of P. falciparum were found to be significantly conserved in D. discoideum . Preeclampsia (PE), caused by multiple factors, is one of the most serious complications of pregnancy. Cadmium (Cd) is a heavy metal environmental pollutant, reproductive toxicant, and endocrine disruptor, which can increase the risk of PE. Cd toxicity due to occupational, diet, and environmental factors has worsened the risk. Studies showed elevated Cd concentration in maternal blood and placenta of PE women. However, the implicit association between Cd associated PE is still not highlighted. We systematically reviewed Cd-associated PE and its effect on pregnancy and birth outcomes. Based on "Preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA)" guidelines, eighty-six studies were identified by PubMed, Web of Science (WOS), and Scopus databases. Publications were included until October 2023 and articles screened based on our inclusion criteria. Our study identified that the exposure of controlled and uncontrolled Cd induces PE, which negatively affects pregnancy and birth outcomes. Given the serious nature of this finding, Cd is a potential adverse agent that impacts pregnancy and future neonatal health. Further comprehensive studies covering the whole trimesters of pregnancy and neonatal developments are warranted. A 72-year-old man with cirrhosis had undiagnosed hepatocellular carcinoma with distant metastasis occupying nearly the entire right atrium. The key role of mitochondria in neurodegenerative disease patients is well documented. Recent studies claimed that mitochondrial regulatory dysfunction might play a role in ongoing cell death and dysfunction. In the present study, we characterized ultrastructural morphometry of mitochondrial alterations occurring at the level of motor neuron cell bodies in SCI-induced rats. We applied 17β-estradiol (E2) to determine whether it can improve mitochondria structural integrity of motor neurons. We used a rat model of acute SCI generated by spinal cord contusion at the T9-T10 level, followed by tissue processing 21 days post-SCI. Samples were divided into five groups: laminectomy, SCI, vehicle, SCI + 25 µg/kg E2, and SCI + 10 µg/kg E2. Assessments included analysis of hind limb motor recovery, quantifying tissue repair, and evaluation of morphological changes in the ultrastructure of mitochondria in motor neurons by transmission electron microscopy. In the E2-treated groups, especially the group receiving 25 µg/kg E2, less irregular mitochondria were observed, as there was a significant reduction in swelling or vacuolization, or fragmentation compared to the SCI group. Furthermore, E2 significantly reduced membrane rupture in the SCI group. E2 could be a proper therapeutic agent to relieve mitochondrial deleterious effects on neurons in neurodegenerative diseases., (© 2023. Advanced spectroscopic techniques have been utilized to study the interaction between the laser dye coumarin 153 (C153) and graphene oxide (GO) nanoparticles. GO was synthesized using a modified Hummers' method and characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, Raman laser spectroscopy, FTIR-ATR spectroscopy, FESEM, HR-TEM, and XRD techniques. The GO@C153 composite was formed by mixing two aqueous solutions of GO and C153 due to their strong interaction through stacking and hydrophobic interactions. In this case, GO acts as an effective fluorescence quencher for C153 molecules, which undergo H-type aggregation in the presence of GO. The Stern-Volmer equation and time-dependent fluorescence studies were utilized to analyse the mechanism of fluorescence quenching. According to the findings, both static and dynamic quenching processes are responsible for the reduction in fluorescence intensity. The effect of surfactants (both cetyltrimethylammonium p -toluenesulfonate (CTAT) and synthesized N , N '-dihexadecyl- N , N , N ', N '-tetramethyl- N , N '-but-2-ynediyl-di-ammonium chloride (16-4-16)) on the aggregation and photophysical properties of the dye was investigated using surface tensiometry, conductometry, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, steady-state fluorescence measurements, DLS, and time-dependent fluorescence spectroscopy. Surfactants change the microenvironment of the C153 dye, leading to spectrum shifting and a higher quantum yield, which causes a rapid rise in fluorescence intensity in the micellar medium. It has been noted that in a micellar medium rather than in an aqueous one, the luminous intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) state of C153 stabilises. Lastly, we investigated the photophysical behavior of the GO-C153-micelle ternary system and discovered that, in the presence of a micellar medium, the quenched and blue-shifted (H-type aggregation) fluorescence peak of C153 (in the presence of GO) began to intensify once more. The main goal of this work is to create an effective and fairly cost powerful fluorescence sensor. Additionally, the ternary system (GO-C153-micelle) analytical idea can be employed to identify the onset of micelle formation. In wastewater treatment analysis, the GO-C153-surfactant ternary system concept can also be used to regenerate the adsorbent (in this case, GO) from dye molecules by allowing the dye molecules to exit the adsorbent and enter the micellar medium.

Salt toxicity is one of the foremost environmental stresses that declines nutrient uptake, photosynthetic activity and growth of plants resulting in a decrease in crop yield and quality. Seed priming has become an emergent strategy to alleviate abiotic stress and improve plant growth. During the current study, turnip seed priming with sodium selenite (Na 2 SeO 3 ) was investigated for its ability to mitigate salt stress. Turnip ( Brassica rapa L. var. Purple Top White Globe) seeds primed with 75, 100, and 125 μ ML -1 of Se were subjected to 200 mM salt stress under field conditions. Findings of the current field research demonstrated that salt toxicity declined seed germination, chlorophyll content, and gas exchange characteristics of B. rapa seedling. Whereas, Se-primed seeds showed higher germination rate and plant growth which may be attributed to the decreased level of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) and malondialdehyde (MDA) decreased synthesis of proline (36%) and besides increased total chlorophyll (46%) in applied turnip plants. Higher expression levels of genes encoding antioxidative activities ( CAT , POD , SO,D and APX ) mitigated oxidative stress induced by the salt toxicity. Additionally, Se treatment decreased Na + content and enhanced K + content resulting in elevated K + /Na + ratio in the treated plants. The in-silico assessment revealed the interactive superiority of Se with antioxidant enzymes including CAT, POD, SOD, and APX as compared to sodium chloride (NaCl). Computational study of enzymes-Se and enzymes-NaCl molecules also revealed the stress ameliorative potential of Se through the presence of more Ramachandran-favored regions (94%) and higher docking affinities of Se (-6.3). The in-silico studies through molecular docking of Na 2 SeO 3 , NaCl, and ROS synthesizing enzymes (receptors) including cytochrome P450 (CYP), lipoxygenase (LOX), and xanthine oxidase (XO), also confirmed the salt stress ameliorative potential of Se in B. rapa . The increased Ca, P, Mg, and Zn nutrients uptake nutrients uptake in 100 μ ML -1 Se primed seedlings helped to adjust the stomatal conductivity (35%) intercellular CO 2 concentration (32%), and photosynthetic activity (41%) resulting in enhancement of the yield attributes. More number of seeds per plant (6%), increased turnip weight (115 gm) root length (17.24 cm), root diameter (12 cm) as well as turnip yield increased by (9%tons ha -1 ) were recorded for 100 μ ML -1 Se treatment under salinity stress. Findings of the current research judiciously advocate the potential of Se seed priming for salt stress alleviation and growth improvement in B. rapa .

Salt stress is a major abiotic stress that affects the world's agricultural soils and crop yield, the system that ensures food production. In the present study, three different concentrations of zinc oxide nanoparticles (250, 500 and 750ZnONPsmg L-1 ) were applied by soil drenching. The treatments aimed to improve the phytochemical characteristics of Lagenaria siceraria L. (bottle gourd) by lowering the oxidative stress brought on by salinity stress (200ppm NaF). Green synthesised ZnO NPs were prepared, having hexagonal and spherical shapes and sizes 16-35nm. Salt stress reduced fresh and dry biomass of plants and improved production of proline. ZnO NPs improved antioxidant response by enhancing catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, superoxide dismutase and peroxidase activities, and protecting cellular structures by eliminating free radicals and reactive oxygen species. The 500mg L-1 ZnO NPs treatment improved total chlorophyll (31%), total soluble sugars (23%) and maintained the gas exchange parameters under salt stress. This treatment also enhanced the biosynthesis of osmotic regulators (proline) by 19%, Na+ by 22% and Zn2+ by 17%, assisting mitigation of salt stress-mediated toxicity in plants. This study demonstrates that ZnO NP-treated seedlings show improved growth attributes, suggesting that ZnO NPs could be advantageous for L. siceraria cultivation in salt polluted areas and could be utilised in place of conventional Zn fertiliser for better crop yield.

Brassinosteroids (BRs) influence a variety of physiological reactions and alleviate different biotic and abiotic stressors. Turnip seedlings were grown with the goal of further exploring and expanding their function in plants under abiotic stress, particularly under heavy metal toxicity (lead stress). This study's objective was to ascertain the role of applied 28-homobrassinolide (HBL) in reducing lead (Pb) stress in turnip plants. Turnip seeds treated with 1, 5, and 10 µM HBL and were grown-up in Pb-contaminated soil (300 mg kg -1 ). Lead accumulation reduces biomass, growth attributes, and various biochemical parameters, as well as increasing proline content. Seed germination, root and shoot growth, and gas exchange characteristics were enhanced via HBL treatment. Furthermore, Pb-stressed seedlings had decreased total soluble protein concentrations, photosynthetic pigments, nutrition, and phenol content. Nonetheless, HBL increased chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b levels in plant, resulting in increased photosynthesis. As a result, seeds treated with HBL2 (5 µM L -1 ) had higher nutritional contents (Mg +2 , Zn +2 , Na +2 , and K +1 ). HBL2-treated seedlings had higher DPPH and metal tolerance indexes. This led to the conclusion that HBL2 effectively reduced Pb toxicity and improved resistance in lead-contaminated soil.

Microneedles are widely used substrates for various chemical and biological sensing applications utilizing surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), which is indeed a highly sensitive and specific analytical approach. This article reports the fabrication of a nanoparticle (NP)-decorated microneedle substrate that is both a SERS substrate and a substrate-supported electrospray ionization (ssESI) mass spectrometry (MS) sample ionization platform. Polymeric ligand-functionalized gold nanorods (Au NRs) are adsorbed onto superhydrophobic surface-modified polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microneedles through the control of various interfacial interactions. We show that the chain length of the polymer ligands dictates the NR adsorption process. Importantly, assembling Au NRs onto the micrometer-diameter needle tips allows the formation of highly concentrated electromagnetic hot spots, which provide the SERS enhancement factor as high as 1.0 × 10 6 . The micrometer-sized area of the microneedle top and high electromagnetic field enhancement of our system can be loosely compared with tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, where the apex of a plasmonic NP-functionalized sharp probe produces high-intensity plasmonic hot spots. Utilizing our NR-decorated microneedle substrates, the synthetic drugs fentanyl and alprazolam are analyzed with a subpicomolar limit of detection. Further analysis of drug-molecule interactions on the NR surface utilizing the Langmuir adsorption model suggests that the higher polarizability of fentanyl allows for a stronger interaction with hydrophilic polymer layers on the NR surface. We further demonstrate the translational aspect of the microneedle substrate for both SERS- and ssESI-MS-based detection of these two potent drugs in 10 drug-of-abuse (DOA) patient plasma samples with minimal preanalysis sample preparation steps. Chemometric analysis for the SERS-based detection shows a very good classification between fentanyl, alprazolam, or a mixture thereof in our selected 10 samples. Most importantly, ssESI-MS analysis also successfully identifies fentanyl or alprazolam in these same 10 DOA plasma samples. We believe that our multimodal detection approach presented herein is a highly versatile detection technology that can be applicable to the detection of any analyte type without performing any complicated sample preparation.

Chromium (Cr) is one of the toxic heavy metals that disturbs growth and physiological properties of plants. During the current study, Trigonella corniculata L. (Fenugreek) was exposed to different levels of Cr in potted soil. Chromium toxicity reduced fiber, ash, moisture, carbohydrate, protein, fats, and flavonoid content of T. corniculata. Considering the stress relieving effect of 28-homobrassinolide (28-HBR), seeds of T. corniculata were primed with different concentration of 28-HBR i.e., 0, 5, 10, and 20 µmol L -1 . Application of 28-HBR reversed the toxic effect of Cr through improvement in activity of antioxidant enzymes like superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT). Conclusively, 10 µmol L -1 28-HBR increased Cr tolerance in T. corniculata seedlings due to reduction in oxidative stress markers. Programmable manipulation of inorganic-organic interfacial electronic properties of ligand-functionalized plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) is the key parameter dictating their applications such as catalysis, photovoltaics, and biosensing. Here we report the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties of gold triangular nanoprisms (Au TNPs) in solid state that are functionalized with dipolar, conjugated ligands. A library of thiocinnamate ligands with varying surface dipole moments were used to functionalize TNPs, which results in ∼150 nm reversible tunability of LSPR peak wavelength with significant peak broadening (∼230 meV). The highly adjustable chemical system of thiocinnamate ligands is capable of shifting the Au work function down to 2.4 eV versus vacuum, i.e., ∼2.9 eV lower than a clean Au (111) surface, and this work function can be modulated up to 3.3 eV, the largest value reported to date through the formation of organothiolate SAMs on Au. Interestingly, the magnitude of plasmonic responses and work function modulation is NP shape dependent. By combining first-principles calculations and experiments, we have established the mechanism of direct wave function delocalization of electrons residing near the Fermi level into hybrid electronic states that are mostly dictated by the inorganic-organic interfacial dipole moments. We determine that both interfacial dipole and hybrid electronic states, and vinyl conjugation together are the key to achieving such extraordinary changes in the optoelectronic properties of ligand-functionalized, plasmonic NPs. The present study provides a quantitative relationship describing how specifically constructed organic ligands can be used to control the interfacial properties of NPs and thus the plasmonic and electronic responses of these functional plasmonics for a wide range of plasmon-driven applications.

A major obstacle to agricultural production and yield quality is heavy metal contamination of the soil and water, which leads to lower productivity and quality of crops. The situation has significantly worsened as a result of the growing population and subsequent rise in food consumption. The growth of nutrient-rich plants is hampered by lead (Pb) toxicity in the soil. Brassica oleracea L. (broccoli) is a prominent vegetable crop in the Brassicaceae family subjected to a number of biotic and abiotic stresses that dramatically lower crop yields. Seed priming is a novel, practicable, and cost-effective method that can improve various abiotic stress tolerances. Many plant metabolic activities depend on the antioxidant enzyme glutathione (GSH), which also chelates heavy metals. Keeping in view the stress mitigation potential of GSH, current research work was designed to inspect the beneficial role of seed priming with GSH on the growth, morphological and gas exchange attributes of broccoli seedlings under Pb stress. For this purpose, broccoli seeds were primed with 25, 50, and 75 µM L -1 GSH. Plant growth and photosynthetic activity were adversely affected by Pb stress. Furthermore, Pb stress enhanced proline levels along with reduced protein and phenol content. The application of GSH improved growth traits, total soluble proteins, chlorophyll content, mineral content, and gas exchange parameters. The involvement of GSH in reducing Pb concentrations was demonstrated by an improved metal tolerance index and lower Pb levels in broccoli plants. Worldwide, crop productivity is highly influenced by heavy metal toxicity. Lead (Pb) the is second-most toxic heavy metal that has high persistence in soil. Lead is translocated in plants from rhizosphere soil and enters the food chain, where it poses a significant hazard to the health of humans. In the present investigation, seed priming with triacontanol (Tria) was used to mitigate Pb phytotoxicity in Phaseolus vulgaris L. (common bean). Seeds were primed with different concentrations of Tria (control, 10 µmol L -1 , 20 µmol L -1 , 30 µmol L -1 ) solutions. The pot experiment was carried out by sowing Tria-primed seeds in contaminated soil with 400 mg kg -1 Pb. Lead alone induced a decrease in the rate of germination and a significant reduction in biomass and growth of P. vulgaris as compared to the control. All these negative effects were reversed by Tria-primed seeds. Proliferation of photosynthetic pigments was observed 1.8-fold by Tria under Pb stress. Primed seeds with 20 µmol L -1 Tria enhanced stomatal conductance ( gs ), photosynthetic rate ( A ), transpiration rate ( Ei ), and uptake of mineral contents (Mg +2 , Zn +2 , Na + , and K + ) and reduced Pb accumulation in seedlings. Tria caused a 1.3-fold increase in osmotic regulator proline synthesis to alleviate Pb stress. Phenolics, soluble protein, and DPPH free radical scavenging activity were enhanced by Tria application, suggesting that exogenous Tria could be employed to improve plant tolerance to Pb stress.
