The Lightning Network is a peer-to-peer network designed to address Bitcoin's scalability challenges, facilitating rapid, cost-effective, and instantaneous transactions through bidirectional, blockchain-backed payment channels among network peers. Due to a source-based routing of payments, different pathfinding strategies are used in practice, trading off different objectives for each other such as payment reliability and routing fees. This paper explores differences within pathfinding strategies used by prominent Lightning Network node implementations, which include different underlying cost functions and different constraints, as well as different greedy algorithms of shortest path-type. Surprisingly, we observe that the pathfinding problems that most LN node implementations attempt to solve are NP-complete, and cannot be guaranteed to be optimally solved by the variants of Dijkstra's algorithm currently deployed in production. Through comparative analysis and simulations, we evaluate efficacy of different pathfinding strategies across metrics such as success rate, fees, path length, and timelock. Our experiments indicate that the strategies used by LND tend to be advantageous in terms of payment reliability, Eclair tends to result in paths with low fees, and that LDK exhibits average reliability with larger fee levels for smaller payment amounts; furthermore, CLN stands out for its minimal timelock paths. Additionally, we investigate the impact of Lightning node connectivity levels on routing efficiency. This paper offers actionable insights for developers to build scalable, responsive applications, aiming to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. This study's critical analysis and recommendations aim to guide future research and development in ASM, contributing to the advancement of modern application architecture.

The Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) is developing a Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics (MCAO) system for the Kodaikanal Tower Telescope (KTT). In this context, we have measured the daytime turbulence strength profile at the Kodaikanal Observatory. The first method based on wavefront sensor (WFS) images, called S-DIMM+ (Solar-Differential Image Motion Monitor+), was used to estimate the higher altitude turbulence up to a height of 5 - 6 km. The second method used balloon-borne temperature sensors to measure the near-Earth turbulence up to 350 m. We also carried out simulations to validate the performance of our system. We report the first-ever daytime turbulence strength profile measurements at the observatory. We have identified the presence of a strong turbulence layer about 3 km above the observatory. The measured near-Earth turbulence matches the trend that is expected from the model for daytime component of turbulence and gives an integrated $r_0$ of about 4 cm at 500 nm. This is consistent with earlier seeing measurements. We investigate connectivity properties of the SARS-CoV2 spike protein-human ACE2-receptor complex employing a protein side chain-based network method that allows us to span a range from atomic to global protein scales. We analyze network topology in terms of clusters and cliques obtained from averaging over snapshots of MD simulations (from D.E. Shaw Research). We demonstrate that SARS-CoV2 forms a more dominant, robust connection with the ACE2-receptor as compared to the less virulent SARS-CoV1. Globally, this stronger connectivity is reflected by our percolation analysis where the interface cluster for the SARS-CoV2-ACE2 complex persists when restricted to stronger and stronger bonds, as compared to the SARSCoV1- ACE2 complex. At the atomic level, interface clique structure reflects a stronger connectivity in the former complex. We pinpoint key functional residues in SARSCoV2 that play important roles in establishing this higher connectivity. Thus, our studies provide an objective method to map spatial connectivity of atomic level non-covalent interactions to global connectivity between any two amino acids in the complex. We also analyze specific snapshots of the MD simulations to highlight prominent variations in network topology that explore diverse conformational landscapes. Finally, we demonstrate that a majority of mutations that occur in the SARSCoV2 spike protein in variants of concern/interest (including the currently circulating JN.1) have been observed at the interface with the ACE2 receptor. Adaptive Optics (AO) systems have become integral for ground-based astronomy. Based on the scientific case, there are various flavours of AO systems. Measuring the turbulence strength profile ($C_N^2(h)$) and other site characteristics is essential before selecting a site or implementing certain types of AO systems. We used an iterative deconvolution procedure on long-exposure H-$\alpha$ images of the Sun to determine the isoplanatic patch size during the daytime. Modern large ground-based solar telescopes are invariably equipped with adaptive optics systems to enhance the high angular resolution imaging and spectroscopic capabilities in the presence of the Earth's atmospheric turbulence. The quality of the images obtained from these telescopes can not be quantified with the Strehl ratio or other metrics that are used for nighttime astronomical telescopes directly. In this paper, we propose to use the root mean square (rms) granulation contrast as a metric to quantify the image quality of ground-based solar telescopes. We obtain semi-logarithmic plots indicating the correspondence between the Strehl ratio and the rms granulation contrast for most practical values of the telescope diameters (D) and the atmospheric coherence diameters ($ r_0$), for various levels of adaptive optics compensation. We estimate the efficiency of a few working solar adaptive optics systems by comparing the results of our simulations with the Strehl ratio and rms granulation contrast published by these systems. The microtubule is a cylindrical biological polymer that plays key roles in cellular structure, transport, and signalling. In this work, based on studies of electronic properties of polyacetelene and mechanical properties of microtubules themselves (see Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 248101), we explore the possibility that microtubules could act as topological insulators that are gapped to electronic excitations in the bulk but possess robust electronic bounds states at the tube ends. Through analyses of structural and electronic properties, we model the microtubule as a cylindrical stack of Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chains (originally proposed in the context of polyacetylene) describing electron hopping between the underlying dimerized tubulin lattice sites. We postulate that the microtubule is mostly uniform, dominated purely by GDP-bound dimers, and is capped by a disordered regime due to the presence of GTP-bound dimers as well. In the uniform region, we identify the electron hopping parameter regime in which the microtubule is a topological insulator. We then show the manner in which these topological features remain robust when the hopping parameters are disordered.
