Quantum states with long-lived coherence are essential for quantum computation, simulation and metrology. The nuclear spin states of ultracold molecules prepared in the singlet rovibrational ground state are an excellent candidate for encoding and storing quantum information. However, it is important to understand all sources of decoherence for these qubits, and then eliminate them, in order to reach the longest possible coherence times. Here, we fully characterise the dominant mechanisms for decoherence of a storage qubit in an optically trapped ultracold gas of RbCs molecules using high-resolution Ramsey spectroscopy. Guided by a detailed understanding of the hyperfine structure of the molecule, we tune the magnetic field to where a pair of hyperfine states have the same magnetic moment. These states form a qubit, which is insensitive to variations in magnetic field. Our experiments reveal an unexpected differential tensor light shift between the states, caused by weak mixing of rotational states. We demonstrate how this light shift can be eliminated by setting the angle between the linearly polarised trap light and the applied magnetic field to a magic angle of $\arccos{(1/\sqrt{3})}\approx55^{\circ}$. We explore coherent multi-photon processes in $^{87}$Rb$^{133}$Cs molecules using 3-level lambda and ladder configurations of rotational and hyperfine states, and discuss their relevance to future applications in quantum computation and quantum simulation. In the lambda configuration, we demonstrate the driving of population between two hyperfine levels of the rotational ground state via a two-photon Raman transition. Such pairs of states may be used in the future as a quantum memory, and we measure a Ramsey coherence time for a superposition of these states of 58(9) ms. In the ladder configuration, we show that we can generate and coherently populate microwave dressed states via the observation of an Autler-Townes doublet. We demonstrate that we can control the strength of this dressing by varying the intensity of the microwave coupling field. Finally, we perform spectroscopy of the rotational states of $^{87}$Rb$^{133}$Cs up to $N=6$, highlighting the potential of ultracold molecules for quantum simulation in synthetic dimensions. By fitting the measured transition frequencies we determine a new value of the centrifugal distortion coefficient $D_v=h\times207.3(2)~$Hz.

We investigate the effects of static electric and magnetic fields on the differential ac Stark shifts for microwave transitions in ultracold bosonic $^{87}$Rb$^{133}$Cs molecules, for light of wavelength $\lambda = 1064~\mathrm{nm}$. Near this wavelength we observe unexpected two-photon transitions that may cause trap loss. We measure the ac Stark effect in external magnetic and electric fields, using microwave spectroscopy of the first rotational transition. We quantify the isotropic and anisotropic parts of the molecular polarizability at this wavelength. We demonstrate that a modest electric field can decouple the nuclear spins from the rotational angular momentum, greatly simplifying the ac Stark effect. We use this simplification to control the ac Stark shift using the polarization angle of the trapping laser.

We use frequency comb-based optical two-way time-frequency transfer (O-TWTFT) to measure the optical frequency ratio of state-of-the-art ytterbium and strontium optical atomic clocks separated by a 1.5 km open-air link. Our free-space measurement is compared to a simultaneous measurement acquired via a noise-cancelled fiber link. Despite non-stationary, ps-level time-of-flight variations in the free-space link, ratio measurements obtained from the two links, averaged over 30.5 hours across six days, agree to $6\times10^{-19}$, showing that O-TWTFT can support free-space atomic clock comparisons below the $10^{-18}$ level.

Quantum statistics and symmetrization dictate that identical fermions do not interact via s-wave collisions. However, in the presence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC), fermions prepared in identical internal states with distinct momenta become distinguishable. The resulting strongly interacting system can exhibit exotic topological and pairing behaviors, many of which are yet to be observed in condensed matter systems. Ultracold atomic gases offer a promising pathway for simulating these rich phenomena. Two recent experiments reported the observation of single atom SOC in optical lattice clocks (OLCs) based on alkaline-earth atoms. In these works encoding the effective spin degree of freedom in the long-lived electronic clock states significantly reduced the detrimental effects of spontaneous emission and heating that have thus far hindered the study of interacting SOC with alkali atoms. Beyond first studies of interacting SOC with alkali atoms in a bulk gas and with two particles in a lattice, here we enter a new regime of many-body interacting SOC in an OLC. Using clock spectroscopy, we observe the precession of the collective magnetization and the emergence of spin locking effects arising from an interplay between p-wave and SOC-induced exchange interactions. The many-body dynamics are well captured by a collective XXZ spin model, which describes a broad class of condensed matter systems ranging from superconductors to quantum magnets. Furthermore, our work will aid in the design of next-generation OLCs by offering a route for avoiding the observed large density shifts caused by SOC-induced exchange interactions.

We demonstrate optical frequency comparison of the 171Yb, 27Al+ and 87Sr atomic clocks with measurement uncertainties below 1 part in 1017, and discuss how phase-coherent and synchronous clock comparisons can be used to improve measurement stability.

We perform absolute measurement of the 27Al+ single-ion and 87Sr neutral lattice clock frequencies at the National Institute of Standards and Technology and JILA at the University of Colorado against a global ensemble of primary frequency standards. Over an eight month period multiple measurements yielded the mean optical atomic transition frequencies ν Al + = 1 121 015 393 207 859.50 ( 0.36 ) Hz and ν Sr = 429 228 004 229 873.19(0.15) Hz, where the stated uncertainties are dominated by statistical noise and gaps in the observation interval (‘dead-time’ uncertainty).

We report on an improved systematic evaluation of the JILA SrI optical lattice clock, achieving a nearly identical systematic uncertainty compared to the previous strontium accuracy record set by the JILA SrII optical lattice clock (OLC) at $2.1 \times 10^{-18}$. This improves upon the previous evaluation of the JILA SrI optical lattice clock in 2013, and we achieve a more than twenty-fold reduction in systematic uncertainty to $2.0 \times 10^{-18}$. A seven-fold improvement in clock stability, reaching $4.8 \times 10^{-17}/\sqrt{\tau}$ for an averaging time $\tau$ in seconds, allows the clock to average to its systematic uncertainty in under 10 minutes. We improve the systematic uncertainty budget in several important ways. This includes a novel scheme for taming blackbody radiation-induced frequency shifts through active stabilization and characterization of the thermal environment, inclusion of higher-order terms in the lattice light shift, and updated atomic coefficients. Along with careful control of other systematic effects, we achieve low temporal drift of systematic offsets and high uptime of the clock. We additionally present an improved evaluation of the second order Zeeman coefficient that is applicable to all Sr optical lattice clocks. These improvements in performance have enabled several important studies including frequency ratio measurements through the Boulder Area Clock Optical Network (BACON), a high precision comparison with the JILA 3D lattice clock, a demonstration of a new all-optical time scale combining SrI and a cryogenic silicon cavity, and a high sensitivity search for ultralight scalar dark matter., Comment: 24 pages, 9 figures

We investigate collective emission from coherently driven ultracold [superscript 88]Sr atoms. We perform two sets of experiments using a strong and weak transition that are insensitive and sensitive, respectively, to atomic motion at 1 μK. We observe highly directional forward emission with a peak intensity that is enhanced, for the strong transition, by >10[superscript 3] compared with that in the transverse direction. This is accompanied by substantial broadening of spectral lines. For the weak transition, the forward enhancement is substantially reduced due to motion. Meanwhile, a density-dependent frequency shift of the weak transition (∼10% of the natural linewidth) is observed. Engineered spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in cold atom systems can aid in the study of novel synthetic materials and complex condensed matter phenomena. Despite great advances, alkali atom SOC systems are hindered by heating from spontaneous emission, which limits the observation of many-body effects, motivating research into potential alternatives. Here we demonstrate that SOC can be engineered to occur naturally in a one-dimensional fermionic 87Sr optical lattice clock (OLC). In contrast to previous SOC experiments, in this work the SOC is both generated and probed using a direct ultra-narrow optical clock transition between two electronic orbital states. We use clock spectroscopy to prepare lattice band populations, internal electronic states, and quasimomenta, as well as to produce SOC dynamics. The exceptionally long lifetime of the excited clock state (160 s) eliminates decoherence and atom loss from spontaneous emission at all relevant experimental timescales, allowing subsequent momentum- and spin-resolved in situ probing of the SOC band structure and eigenstates. We utilize these capabilities to study Bloch oscillations, spin-momentum locking, and Van Hove singularities in the transition density of states. SU(N) symmetry can emerge in a quantum system with N single-particle spin states when spin is decoupled from inter-particle interactions. So far, only indirect evidence for this symmetry exists, and the scattering parameters remain largely unknown. Here we report the first spectroscopic observation of SU(N=10) symmetry in Sr-87 using the state-of-the-art measurement precision offered by an ultra-stable laser. By encoding the electronic orbital degree of freedom in two clock states, while keeping the system open to 10 nuclear spin sublevels, we probe the non-equilibrium two-orbital SU(N) magnetism via Ramsey spectroscopy of atoms confined in an array of two-dimensional optical traps. We study the spin-orbital quantum dynamics and determine all relevant interaction parameters. We use a phase-only spatial light modulator to generate light distributions in which the intensity decays as a power law from a central maximum, with order ranging from 2 (parabolic) to 0.5. We suggest that a sequence of these can be used as a time-dependent optical dipole trap for all-optical production of Bose-Einstein condensates in two stages: efficient evaporative cooling in a trap with adjustable strength and depth, followed by an adiabatic transformation of the trap order to cross the BEC transition in a reversible way. We perform a measurement of the tune-out wavelength, $\lambda_{0}$, between the $D_{1}$, $6^2S_{1/2}\rightarrow6^2P_{1/2}$, and $D_{2}$, $6^2S_{1/2}\rightarrow6^2P_{3/2}$, transitions for $^{133}$Cs in the ground hyperfine state $(F=3, m_{F}=+3)$. At $\lambda_{0}$, the frequency-dependent scalar polarizability is zero leading to a zero scalar ac Stark shift. We measure the polarizability as a function of wavelength using Kapitza-Dirac scattering of a $^{133}$Cs Bose-Einstein condensate in a one-dimensional optical lattice, and determine the tune-out wavelength to be $\lambda_{0}=880.21790(40)_{\textrm{stat}}(8)_{\textrm{sys}}$ nm. From this measurement we determine the ratio of reduced matrix elements to be $\left|\left \right|^{2}\left|\left \right|^{2}=1.9808(2)$. This represents an improvement of a factor of 10 over previous results derived from excited-state lifetime measurements. We use the present measurement as a benchmark test of high-precision theory.
