Solar wind protons can interact directly with the hydrogen corona of Mars through charge exchange, resulting in energetic neutral atoms (ENAs) able to penetrate deep into the upper atmosphere of Mars. ENAs can undergo multiple charge changing interactions, leading to an observable beam of penetrating protons in the upper atmosphere. We seek to characterize the behavior of these protons in the presence of magnetic fields using data collected by the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) spacecraft. We find that backscattered penetrating proton flux is enhanced in regions where the magnetic field strength is greater than 200 nT. We also find a strong correlation at CO2 column densities less than 5.5 × 1014 cm−2 between magnetic field strength and the observed backscattered and downwardflux. We do not see significant changes in penetrating proton flux with magnetic field strengths on the order of 10 nT.

The detectors in the Aqua Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) reflective solar bands (RSBs) are calibrated assuming a linear relationship between the observed top-of-atmosphere radiance and the instrument output response. Any nonlinear behavior in the system response can contribute to errors in NASA's Level 1B MODIS reflectance and radiance products, which are used in a wide variety of Earth science applications. While most RSB detectors continue to have very linear behavior even after more than 18 years of operation, we present evidence that the detectors in Aqua MODIS bands 1 (645 nm) and 2 (858 nm) have deviations from gain linearity that change over the mission by up to 3%. We show a clear divergence between gain measurements made with the onboard solar diffuser (SD) at two different radiance levels, achieved by collecting data both with and without an attenuation screen. Radiance trends from lunar calibrations and typical desert and ocean scenes are also compared. We present a simple method to characterize the response nonlinearity using a quadratic function by combining the results of the two sets of SD calibrations. Applying this quadratic calibration algorithm to the desert and lunar data results in improved agreement in their long-term radiance trends. A clear understanding of the magnitude of the gain nonlinearity could be useful to help improve the quality of numerous MODIS science products, including the land imaging applications that rely heavily on these bands.

Storytelling is a powerful instrument for system change. Telling stories of lived experience, listening to them, and sharing them contributes to a culture of trust based on dignity, mutual respect and shared values. In this paper we draw attention to public service innovation and co-creation with the people the service is meant for. In the past years, public service innovation was result-and output driven, targeting technological and managerial innovation. Stories of service users revealed the unintended negative consequences of such innovation policies and opened new perspectives for conversations of change based on shared values leading to innovations based on human development and dignity.

This chapter highlights the life story of Zina Karaeva, a senior professor of English Philology in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Zina has been active in developing university academic programs in Kyrgyzstan, including Translation Studies and American Studies. Her commitment to the translation of Kyrgyz epics is the result of a lifetime of navigating cultures and languages within and beyond her small mountainous country in Central Asia and is a passion she hopes to pass on to her students.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instruments on-board the Aqua and Terra spacecraft have collected valuable Earth data for the last 19 and 21 years, respectively. MODIS is equipped with various on-orbit calibrators, including a solar diffuser (SD) and solar diffuser stability monitor (SDSM), that are used to monitor changes in the instrument’s gain over time. Nominally, SD calibrations alternate between two configurations: screen open and screen closed. Terra MODIS, however, experienced an anomaly in 2003, which has left the SD door and screen in a permanent open-closed configuration. This resulted in accelerated degradation of the SD on Terra MODIS due to the direct solar radiation exposure every orbit. It also led to an unexpected divergence between the calibration coefficients, m1, or the inverse of the gain, generated using SD data and those generated using lunar observations at the time of the 2003 anomaly. This paper examines the effect of the screen configuration on the Terra SD degradation by analyzing Terra SDSM data and comparing to Aqua. We generate “pseudo-open” Terra SDSM data by modeling the ratio of Aqua screen open and screen closed SDSM data and calculate the Terra SD degradation using this new screen open data. We then examine the effects on our m1 values calculated using this new pseudo-open SD degradation for Terra. Implementing this new degradation results in a smaller discrepancy between the lunar and SD m1 values after the door anomaly, indicating that there may be a systematic error in the SD degradation calculated with screen closed data.

Within the expansion of postgraduate educational qualifications for health professionals, graduate attributes have become important markers of outcomes and value. However, it is not clear how or when graduate attributes develop, or how they are applied in professional practice after graduation. We interviewed 17 graduates from two online Master's programmes to explore their perceptions of how postgraduate study had influenced their practice and professional identity. Our thematic analysis produced three main themes (academic voice, infectious curiosity, and expanding worldview) which reflected changes in the participants' confidence, attitude, perspective, and agency across professional and academic settings. We then conducted a secondary phase of analysis using Bourdieu's concepts of 'field', 'capital', and 'habitus'. While graduate attributes have been conceptualised as the context-independent acquisition of traits that can be employed by individuals, Bourdieu's framework highlights their relational qualities: they are caught up in the cultural history and context of the student/professional, the reputation of the awarding institution, and the graduate's location within a network of professional peers.

IntroductionLow self-compassion and poor sleep quality have been identified as potential key predictors of distress in type 2 diabetes (T2D). This study investigated relationships between sleep behaviors (sleep duration, social jetlag and daytime sleepiness), diabetes-related distress (DRD) and self-compassion in people with T2D.Research design and methodsThis cross-sectional study used data from 467 people with T2D derived from self-report questionnaires, accelerometer-assessed sleep measures and demographic information (clinicaltrials.gov registration: NCT02973412). All participants had a diagnosis of T2D and no comorbid sleep disorder (excluding obstructive sleep apnea). Hierarchical multiple regression and mediation analysis were used to quantify relationships between self-compassion, sleep variables and DRD.ResultsSignificant predictors of DRD included two negative subscales of the Self-Compassion Scale (SCS), and daytime sleepiness. The ‘overidentified’ and ‘isolation’ SCS subscales were particularly important in predicting distress. Daytime sleepiness also partially mediated the influence of self-compassion on DRD, potentially through self-care around sleep.ConclusionsDaytime sleepiness and negative self-compassion have clear associations with DRD for people with T2D. The specific negative subscale outcomes suggest that strengthening individuals’ ability to mindfully notice thoughts and experiences without becoming enmeshed in them, and reducing a sense of separateness and difference, might be key therapeutic targets for improving well-being in T2D. Psychological interventions should include approaches focused on reducing negative self-compassion and improving sleep behavior. Equally, reducing DRD may carry beneficial outcomes for sleep and self-compassion. Further work is however crucial to establish causation and long-term impact, and for development of relevant clinical resources.

A male child presented initially well with a mixed nephrotic–nephritic syndrome and was commenced on standard high-dose oral corticosteroids. Clinical deterioration occurred 3 weeks later with rapidly progressing renal dysfunction, seizures and diminished urinary output, requiring renal replacement therapy. Once stabilised, renal biopsy demonstrated mesangial and capillary C3, minimal IgG deposition, with mesangial electron dense deposits felt consistent with postinfectious glomerulonephritis or C3 glomerulopathy. Further investigations identified circulating autoantibody directed against factor H, as a plausible aetiology of the membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN). Treatment with rituximab and mycophenolate mofetil was associated with a reduction in antibody titres and a concurrent reduction in proteinuria and normalisation of renal function.Subsequent monitoring of antibody titres prompted further administrations of rituximab, with reduction in titres demonstrated after repeat doses. Atypical presentations or complications of nephrotic syndrome or MPGN should prompt detailed investigations for the cause with consideration of antifactor H antibodies.

Mentoring of pre-service teachers in school contexts is acknowledged as an important part of initial teacher education. However, finding sufficient school-based professional experience placements for pre-service teachers, ensuring the quality of the learning experiences provided by such placements, and gaining a clear understanding of what teachers actually learn during placements continue to be of concern to all involved in this component of teacher education. In this paper, three interconnected perspectives are provided as a university-based teacher educator, a school-based teacher educator and a pre-service teacher learn together in a dialogic mentoring relationship. The work of Mikhail Bakhtin and Valentin Voloshinov is employed to theorise the nature of dialogic relationships and how such relationships differ from ‘having a conversation’.

Purpose To determine test-retest reliability and minimal detectable change of the Timed Up and Go (TUG) and Timed Up and Down Stairs (TUDS) for Down syndrome. Subjects Twelve children with Down syndrome (DS) aged 3 to 17 years. Methods Two sessions, 1 week apart, with 3 trials of the TUG and 2 trials of the TUDS. Test-retest reliability was estimated using intraclass correlation coefficients and the standard error of measurement. The minimal detectable changes (MDCs) for both tests were calculated. Results The TUG and TUDS tests both had high test-retest reliability. The MDC was 1.26 seconds for the TUG and 12.52 seconds for the TUDS test. Conclusions Both tests were reliable in this population, but the MDC results suggest only the TUG is clinically useful.

While previous studies separately demonstrate EEG spectral modulations during speech preparation and ERP responses to the listened speech, it is unclear whether these responses are related on a trial-by-trial basis between a speaker and listener. In order to determine whether these responses are related in real-time, Electroencephalography (EEG) responses were measured simultaneously within a speaker and listener using a 24 electrode Mobile EEG system (18 participants; 9 pairs) during a sentence completion task. Each trial consisted of a sentence prompt with an incomplete ending (e.g. “I took my dog for a ____”). The speaker was instructed to fill in the ending with something expected (e.g. “walk”) (40 trials) or unexpected (e.g. “drink”) (40 trials). The other participant listened to the speaker throughout the block. We found that lower alpha band activity was reduced when individuals prepared unexpected sentence endings compared to expected sentence endings. Greater reductions in the speaker’s lower alpha activity during response preparation were correlated with a more negative N400 response in the listener to the unexpected word. These findings demonstrate that alpha suppression and the N400 ERP effect are present within a hyperscanning context and they are correlated between the speaker and listener during sentence completion.

Isomerisation of 2-benzylidene-1,3-dioxolane to 3-phenylbutyrolactone occurs readily under flash vacuum pyrolysis (FVP) conditions. 2-Diphenylmethyl-1,3-oxathiolane and 2-benzyl-1,3-oxathiolane have been prepared and the latter compound has been oxidised to the corresponding sulfoxide, whose structure and conformation is examined by 1H NMR, and to the sulfone whose X-ray structure is determined. 2-Benzylidene-1,3-oxathiolane is also prepared and the behaviour of the three S-oxidised oxathiolane derivatives upon FVP is examined. While extrusion of SOn to give ethene and a carbonyl compound predominates in all three cases, the sulfoxide also gives bis(2-hydroxyethyl) disulfide, most likely formed via thiirane S-oxide and 1,2-oxathietane.
