Abstract

Background On festive days worldwide eyes are severely injured by fireworks. The data on the number and severity are to date not registered in Germany. Objective How frequent are firework-induced injuries in Germany, who are the affected, how serious are the injuries, which forms of treatment are necessary and how frequent are accompanying injuries? Method A German nationwide online-based survey was carried out in all inpatient eye departments and data over the last 3 consecutive years were descriptively analyzed. Results From New Years Eve 2016/2017, when 41 eye departments sent in data, the participation could be increased to 51 eye departments in 2018/2019. More than one third (33-39%) of all 1356 patients over 3 years were minors, 60% were younger than 25 years old and roughly 60% of patients were injured as bystanders or in an unclear situation. In total 25% of all eye injuries were considered severe and required inpatient treatment. Accompanying injuries of the other eye, the face and hands were more frequent in minors than in adults. Eyeball ruptures were reported in 10 minors and 38 adults over the 3 years. Conclusion Particularly minors and bystanders need better protection.

Abstract

A blood type was the most common in our group of patients (41.6%), followed by O blood type (33.3%), B blood type (15.8%) and AB blood type (9.3%), respectively. Non-O blood type lymphoma patients with VTE had significantly more often developed VTE prior to the treatment initiation in comparison with O blood type lymphoma patients with VTE (2.5% vs. 1%, I p i = 0.04), whereas VTE in O blood type lymphoma patients was significantly more often after the initiation of hematological treatment in comparison with VTE in non-O blood type patients (3.8% vs. 3%, I p i = 0.04). VTE was diagnosed before the specific hematological treatment initiation in 46.8% of lymphoma patients, whilst 53.2% of lymphoma patients have been diagnosed with VTE after the hematological treatment commencement. 25. Soluble And Insoluble Ternary Complexes Of Serum Proteins With Polyanions In The Presence Of Cu2+ In Water

Abstract

Complex formation between polyacrylic acid (PAA) and bovine serum albumin (BSA), human serum albumin (HSA), hemoglobin (Hb), globin (Gl), and, respectively, transferrin (Tr), were studied in neutral water. Water-soluble and insoluble complexes are formed upon addition of divalent copper ions to the solution. The contacts between proteins and PAA are achieved via chelate unit formation in which the copper ions are located at the center. The solubility of the polycomplexes depends on the nature of proteins acid correlates with their isoelectric points (pI). In the mixtures of Hb-Cu2+-PAA and Gl-Cu2+-PAA, insoluble complexes are formed at pH = pI starting with very low concentrations of Cu2+ (n(Cu)/n(AA) less than or equal to 0.01) On the other hand, these polycomplexes remain soluble at pH > pi. BSA, HSA, and Tr form soluble ternary polycomplexes at neutral water (pH 7). The formation of the polycomplexes in the mixture BSA-Cu2+-PAA was intensively studied by titration, HPLC, electrophoretic, and spectrophotometric methods. The solubility, composition, and stability of these polycomplexes depend on metal/polymer and protein/polymer ratio. Insoluble polycomplexes are formed when concentration of Cu2+ reaches a critical value (n(Cu)/n(AA) greater than or equal to 0.25). At this concentration of Cu2+, phase separation takes place, starting with very low concentration of protein in the system. Over the critical ratio of the protein/polymer, the mixture again exhibits water-soluble character. The pattern of distribution of Cu2+ between PAA coils and of protein globules between polymer-metal complex particules appeared to follow the self-assembly principle. 26. A high peritoneal large pore fluid flux causes hypoalbuminaemia and is a risk factor for death in peritoneal dialysis patients

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Hypoalbuminaemia is common in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients and has an associated high mortality. An excess morbidity and mortality has previously been found in patients with high peritoneal transport. A high peritoneal large pore fluid flux (Jv(L)) results in increased peritoneal loss of protein that possibly contributes to patient morbidity. Alternatively, hypoalbuminaemia and high transport status could be just a marker of capillary pathology associated with atherosclerotic comorbidity.METHODS: Peritoneal dialysis capacity computer modelling of peritoneal transport, based on Rippe's three-pore model, was performed to measure Jv(L) in 155 incident PD patients 2-4 weeks after PD initiation. Patient clinical and biochemical status was determined -6, -3, -1, 1 and 6 months after PD initiation, and every 6 months thereafter. Jv(L) was redetermined in prevalent patients 2 and 4 years after PD initiation.RESULTS: Jv(L) was 0.106+/-0.056 ml/min/1.73 m(2) (median 0.094, interquartile range 0.068-0.128). It was correlated to age*** (*P<0.05; **P<0.01; ***P<0.001) (20-30 years 0.079+/-0.04; 70 years 0.121+/-0.071), but not to gender. No correlation to diabetic or preexisting renal replacement therapy was seen, but patients with atherosclerosis had higher Jv(L) (0.123+/-0.06 vs 0.100+/-0.056*) as had patients with other systemic disease (0.121+/-0.68 vs 0.100+/-0.051*). Jv(L) was positively correlated to area parameter (r = 0.41***), and negatively correlated to plasma albumin (-0.36***). Patients were divided into three equal groups: group 1, Jv(L) <0.075 ml/min/1.73 m(2); group 2, 0.075-0.11; group 3: >0.11. There was no difference between the groups in p-albumin prior to PD. Immediately after PD start, differences between the three groups appeared (1 month p-albumin: (micromol/l) group 1, 548+/-83; group 2, 533+/-86; group 3, 497+/-78**), and persisted for up to 6 years. The design of auxiliary ventilation systems for long drivages and tunnels requires the installation of multiple fans and is of vital importance. If the fans are installed next to each other then air leakage is high, so they are instead installed in series and separated from each other by rigid ducts of fixed or variable length. For a duct of constant length, the design problem may be approached in two ways: by selecting appropriate fans for installation at equal intervals, or by selecting the optimum locations for fans of particular characteristics. The design procedures for each approach are presented as solution algorithms each comprising iterative calculations for which a computer program has been developed. The classical Hardy Cross method and the Steepest Descent method, the simplest of the non-linear programming techniques, were combined in a single algorithm on which a computer program was based. Computational experience has demonstrated that the proposed algorithm converges on the optimum solution very rapidly, requiring fewer iterations and less total solution time than the Hardy Cross method. Abstract

The article presents a study that describes the mechanisms, parameters, and modeling of naphthenate-soap deposition and the related formation damage in petroleum reservoirs. It reveals the use of static bottle tests to calculate its precipitation rate for various pH and temperature conditions, of microscopy investigations to check the growth of its particles, and of core-flow tests to produce its particles. It discusses the correlation of maximum precipitation, of reaction constant, of precipitation-rate constant, and of activation energy. It notes that a mathematical model was designed to describe the formation-damage mechanism its particles in porous media under flowing conditions.

47. Investigation of the ototoxic effects of interferon @a2A on the mouse cochlea

Abstract

This prospective randomized study investigates the possible toxic effects of interferon (IFN) @a2A on the mouse cochlea. Thirty-six albino Swiss mice that were randomly assigned to 3 groups underwent baseline auditory brain stem response testing bilaterally to objectively assess baseline hearing levels. The first group received a single dose of 50,000 units, and the second group received 100,000 units of IFN-@a2A intraperitoneally, whereas the third group was given no medication. Repeat auditory brain stem response testing revealed a significant rise in mean baseline peak equivalent sound pressure level thresholds in the groups that received IFN (P < 0.001). Histologicallly, the cochleae of mice that received IFN had a decreased number of fibroblasts in the spiral limbus, as well as prominent cytoplasmic vacuolation of these cells, compared with control animals. Loss of hair cells was not observed. It is possible that reversible biochemical and metabolic changes in the cochlea, rather than morphologic abnormalities, manifest IFN ototoxicity.
