Abstract Diabetic foot infection imposes a significant burden and is the major cause of nontraumatic limb amputation. Adequate patient management with effective antibiotic therapy is crucial. This retrospective cohort study aimed to characterize the microbiology and resistance patterns of moderate to severe neuropathic diabetic foot infection in patients hospitalized at a tertiary referral hospital between January 2020 and June 2023. Deep tissue specimens from ulcers were collected for culture. Sixty inpatients were included (62% male, mean age 59.1 ± 11.5 years). Osteomyelitis was present in 90% of the patients. Among 102 microorganisms (average of 1.91 ± 1.25 pathogens per patient), 60.8% were gram-positive bacteria, 31.4% were gram-negative, 3.92% were anaerobic bacteria, and 3.92% were fungi. Staphylococcus aureus (19%) and Enterococcus faecium (17%) were the most common. Pseudomonas aeruginosa (8%) and bacteria of the Enterobacterales family (24%) accounted for all the isolated gram-negative bacteria. Sixteen percent of Staphylococcus aureus and 67% of coagulase-negative Staphylococci were resistant to methicillin. Resistance to ampicillin was found in 11% of Enterococci. All Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates were sensitive to piperacillin-tazobactam, ceftazidime, or cefepime. Among the Enterobacterales, resistance rates were 35% for piperacillin-tazobactam, 38% for ceftazidime, 21% for cefepime, and 13% for carbapenems. Although the prevalence of methicillin-resistant staphylococci was lower than that in other studies, carbapenem resistance among gram-negative bacteria warrants attention. This study highlights the importance of understanding local epidemiology for effective diabetic foot infection management and resistance mitigation.

Abstract Background Bariatric surgery leads to weight loss and to cardiometabolic risk improvement. Although prediabetes remission after bariatric surgery is biologically plausible, data on this topic is scarce. We aimed to assess prediabetes remission rate and clinical predictors of remission in a 4 year follow up period. Methods Observational longitudinal study including patients with obesity and prediabetes who had undergone bariatric surgery in our centre. Prediabetes was defined as having a baseline glycated haemoglobin (A1c) between 5.7% and 6.4% and absence of anti-diabetic drug treatment. We used logistic regression models to evaluate the association between the predictors and prediabetes remission rate. Results A total of 669 patients were included, 84% being female. The population had a mean age of 45.4 ± 10.1 years-old, body mass index of 43.8 ± 5.7 kg/m2, and median A1c of 5.9 [5.8, 6.1]%. After bariatric surgery, prediabetes remission rate was 82%, 73%, 66%, and 58%, respectively in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years of follow-up. Gastric sleeve (GS) surgery was associated with higher prediabetes remission rate than Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery in the 3rd year of follow-up. Men had a higher remission rate than women, in the 1st and 3nd years of follow-up in the unadjusted analysis. Younger patients presented a higher remission rate comparing to older patients in the 3rd year of follow-up. Conclusion We showed a high prediabetes remission rate after bariatric surgery. The remission rate decreases over the follow-up period, although most of the patients maintain the normoglycemia. Prediabetes remission seems to be more significant in patients who had undergone GS, in male and in younger patients.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a worldwide lockdown, which affected physical exercise habits, as well as having a detrimental effect on psychological health and follow-up visits of patients submitted to bariatric surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of COVID-19 lockdown on the 2-year weight loss of patients submitted to bariatric surgery in our center. Methods: This was an observational study comparing the weight loss of patients who underwent bariatric surgery from January to March 2020 with a control group submitted to surgery between January and March 2017. Percentage of total weight loss (% TWL) and excess weight loss (% EWL) were assessed 6, 12, and 24 months after surgery. Results: A total number of 203 patients were included in this study, 102 had bariatric surgery during the selected period in 2020 and 101 underwent surgery during the same period in 2017. There was no statistically significant difference in weight loss between the 2017 and 2020 groups which was reported as % TWL (mean 27.08 ± 7.530 vs. 28.03 ± 7.074, 33.87 ± 8.507 vs. 34.07 ± 8.979 and 34.13 ± 9.340 vs. 33.98 ± 9.993; p = 0.371) and % EWL (mean 66.83 ± 23.004 vs. 69.71 ± 17.021, 83.37 ± 24.059 vs. 84.51 ± 21.640 and 83.47 ± 24.130 vs. 84.27 ± 23.651; p = 0.506) at 6, 12, and 24 months post-surgery. Conclusion: Despite social limitations imposed by the COVID-19 lockdown, we found no significant difference between weight loss at 2 years postoperatively in the 2020 group when compared with a control group who underwent bariatric surgery in 2017. These results show that the outcomes of bariatric surgery during the COVID-19 lockdown were comparable with those recorded before the pandemic, supporting the efficacy of bariatric procedures’ metabolic effects during the first 2 years after surgery, regardless of lifestyle habits.

The vast array of omics data in microbiology presents significant opportunities for studying bacterial pathogenesis and creating computational tools for predicting pathogenic potential. However, the field lacks a comprehensive, curated resource that catalogs bacterial strains and their ability to cause human infections. Current methods for identifying pathogenicity determinants often introduce biases and miss critical aspects of bacterial pathogenesis. In response to this gap, we introduce BacSPaD (Bacterial Strains’ Pathogenicity Database), a thoroughly curated database focusing on pathogenicity annotations for a wide range of high-quality, complete bacterial genomes. Our rule-based annotation workflow combines metadata from trusted sources with automated keyword matching, extensive manual curation, and detailed literature review. Our analysis classified 5502 genomes as pathogenic to humans (HP) and 490 as non-pathogenic to humans (NHP), encompassing 532 species, 193 genera, and 96 families. Statistical analysis demonstrated a significant but moderate correlation between virulence factors and HP classification, highlighting the complexity of bacterial pathogenicity and the need for ongoing research. This resource is poised to enhance our understanding of bacterial pathogenicity mechanisms and aid in the development of predictive models. To improve accessibility and provide key visualization statistics, we developed a user-friendly web interface.

Abstract Objective To evaluate the functionality in patients with adhesive capsulitis undergoing suprascapular nerve block (SSNB). Methods A before-and-after clinical prospective study in a single center was conducted with patients with secondary adhesive capsulitis treated with four nerve blocks based on anatomical limits. The sample was non-probabilistic, and it was obtained after a routine appointment at a specialized outpatient clinic. The instruments used for evaluation were the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) and the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) questionnaire, which were applied at baseline (T0), one week after the fourth SSNB (T4), and three months after the first SSNB (T12). The paired t-test was used to compare the means of the ICF checklist items and DASH in the different: T0xT4;T4xT12;and T0xT12). The probability of rejecting the null hypothesis was 5%. Results The sample was composed of 25 individuals with a mean age of 58.16 years; 16 of them were female. The duration of the pain symptoms ranged from 2 to 16 months, with a mean of 5.92 months. The ICF checklist showed that all domains had already improved in T4 except for the environmental factors, which only improved at 03 months (p = 0.037). The patients reported improvements in shoulder function in T4, which increased more in T12, at the end of data collection (p = 0.019). Conclusion The SSNB technique is effective in patients with adhesive capsulitis after4 weeks of application, with improvements in individual's functionality lasting for 12 weeks.

Introdução: As alterações de deglutição são comuns após tratamento para cancro de cabeça e pescoço. Os exercícios para a recuperação das funções da deglutição são importantes, mas a sua utilização de forma profilática ainda é pouco estudada. Objetivo: Analisar a utilização de exercícios profiláticos para a deglutição em pessoas com cancro de cabeça e pescoço submetidas a tratamento (neo)adjuvante com radioterapia e/ou quimioterapia. Métodos: Revisão sistemática da literatura cuja seleção dos estudos decorreu em outubro de 2022 envolvendo pesquisas nas bases de dados PubMed central, LILACS, Scielo, CINAHL Complete, Cochrane Collection Plus, Nursing & Allied Health Collection e Medic Latina. A análise do nível de evidência foi realizada através da escala “Quality Assessment Tool for Quantitative Studies”. Resultados: Identificaram-se 1.401 estudos e selecionados apenas oito para análise e extração de dados. Conclusão: A utilização de exercícios profiláticos parece ter algum benefício nas funções da deglutição, mas os resultados não são consistentes. Sugerem-se novas investigações para estudar os seus potenciais benefícios de forma mais específica (i.e. tipo exercício versus tratamento). Giant condyloma acuminatum, a rare variant of anogenital condyloma, shows rapid growth associated with immunodeficiency. Wound care after resection and outcomes were reported. NGS, black, 55 years, HIV positive, with giant condyloma acuminatum affecting from the groin to the intergluteal groove, which was resected, remaining the wound opened for later skin graft. Topical care included polihexametilene biguanide/betaine solution, essencial fatty acids solution, hydrofiber/silver, and poliuretane film. The wound developed secondary infection, so hidrofiber was replaced by polyurethane foam/silver/ibuprofen. There was improvement in infection and pain, contraction of the edges and the presence of granulation tissue across the lesion. In those conditions the skin graft was performed after 41 days. Despite possible confusion bias, it can be inferred that the care adopted prepared the wound bed to receive the skin graft.

Introdução: A profilaxia pré-exposição (PrEP) ganhou relevância como método de prevenção do VIH em determinados indivíduos e contextos. Após a entrada em vigor das normas para prescrição em Portugal, pretendemos aferir o conhecimento em relação à PrEP entre os estudantes de Medicina em Portugal. Material e Métodos: Foi enviado um questionário online aos estudantes de Medicina das escolas médicas portuguesas. Foi feita uma análise descritiva dos resultados e um estudo transversal analítico para identificar fatores associados a “conhecer a PrEP”, “ter tido uma aula de PrEP”, e “identificar grupos elegíveis corretamente”. Resultados: Dos 796 estudantes que responderam, 64,6% sabiam o que era a PrEP. Destes, 34,44% obteve conhecimento sobre a mesma durante a sua formação. Entre os respondentes, 4,77% identificaram correta e completamente os grupos elegíveis. Com o avançar do ano letivo, a probabilidade de conhecer a PrEP, ter tido uma aula de PrEP e identificar os grupos corretamente aumentava. No sexto ano, 43,48% tinham tido uma aula sobre PrEP e entre os que conheciam a PrEP, 28% identificaram os grupos elegíveis. Existem diferenças entre as escolas médicas após ajustamento para o ano letivo em relação aos resultados obtidos. A forma como se tomou conhecimento da PrEP não alterou de forma estatisticamente significativa a capacidade de identificar corretamente grupos elegíveis Conclusão: As diferenças entre as escolas médicas poderão ser harmonizadas. Esta temática poderá ser reforçada nos respetivos currículos.

Background: Colorectal cancer is one of the most common types of cancer and is associated with a high lethality rate. Treatment is multidisciplinary, and neoadjuvant chemoradiation is recommended in locally advanced rectal cancer. About 15% of patients answer favorably to neoadjuvant chemoradiation, so it is important to determine the predictors of response. Objective: To review the results of studies that analyzes the predictors of complete pathological response to neoadjuvant chemoradiation in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer. Search methods: We searched for eligible articles in data bases Pubmed and Scopus, between the 12th and the 20th of March 2020. The following key words were used: “predictors of response”, “chemoradiation” and ''locally advanced rectal cancer''. Selection criteria: Inclusion criteria: Studies including patients with locally advanced rectal cancer, patients receiving neoadjuvant chemoradiation as treatment, studies including predictors of response to neodjuvant chemoradiation, overall survival as an outcome and regarding language restrictions, only articles in English were accepted, only studies published until the 31st of December 2019 were accepted. Main results: Fourteen studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Thirteen are cohort studies and one is a clinical trial. Four groups of predictors were defined: blood markers, tumors, histopathological and patients’ characteristics. Author's conclusions: During the analysis of the articles, there were several predictors identified as potential candidates for clinical practice, such as high pre neoadjuvant chemoradiation Carcinoembryonic Antigen levels and small post neoadjuvant chemoradiation tumor size. Nevertheless, it is difficult to make definitive conclusions about the most reliable predictors. That is why it is crucial to initiate further studies with standardized cut-off values and a methodology homogenization. Resumo: Introdução: O cancro colorretal é um dos cancros mais prevalentes em Portugal e tem associada uma alta taxa de letalidade. Atualmente, o tratamento é multidisciplinar, e a quimioradioterapia neoadjuvante está indicada no Cancro do Reto Localmente Avançado. Sabe-se que cerca de 15% dos doentes responde favoravelmente à quimioradioterapia neoadjuvante, sendo por isso importante determinar quais os preditores de resposta a este tipo de tratamento. Objetivo: Rever os resultados dos estudos que analisam os preditores de resposta completa à quimioradioterapia em pacientes com Cancro do Reto Localmente Avançado. Métodos de pesquisa: Pesquisamos artigos elegíveis nos bancos de dados Pubmed e Scopus, desde o dia 12 a 20 de Março de 2020. Foram utilizadas as seguintes palavras chave: “preditores de resposta”, “quimioradioterapia neoadjuvante” e ''Cancro do Reto Localmente Avançado''. Critérios de seleção: Critérios de inclusão: Estudos que incluam pacientes com Cancro do Reto Localmente Avançad, pacientes sujeitos a quimioradioterapia neoadjuvante, preditores de resposta à quimioradioterapia, que avaliem a sobrevivência como outcome, escritos em inglês e publicados até dia 31 de Dezembro de 2019. Resultados principais: Catorze estudos preencheram os critérios de inclusão. De todos os artigos, treze são Cohort e um é Clinical Trial. Foram definidos quatro grupos de preditores: marcadores de sangue e caraterísticas do tumor, histopatológicas e dos pacientes. Conclusões dos autores: Durante a análise dos artigos, foram identificados vários preditores como potenciais candidates para a prática clínica, tais como o valor elevado de antigénio carcinoembrionário pré- quimioradioneoaajuvância e tamanho reduzido. Contudo, é arriscado elaborar conclusões concretas relativamente aos preditores mais confiáveis. Por isso, é crucial iniciar novos estudos com valores de cut-off estandardizados e métodos com maior homogeneidade.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is associated with several other metabolic disorders, which are typically pro-inflammatory states. Body fat content is an important marker of metabolic health and abdominal fat is associated with harmful cardiometabolic outcomes. We aimed to evaluate the association between the risk of NAFLD (through Fatty Liver Index (FLI), and BMI, AST/ALT ratio, and presence of diabetes (BARD)), and anthropometric parameters, predictors of metabolic status, in patients with morbid obesity, and to evaluate the association of FLI and BARD scores with pro-inflammatory markers. We have retrospectively studied patients with morbid obesity followed in our center. In total, 2184 participants were included, with an average age of 42.8 ± 10.6 years, 84.5% being females. We report a positive association of FLI with waist circumference (β = 0.10 [0.09 to 0.11], p < 0.01) and waist-to-hip ratio (β = 8.68 [6.85 to 10.52, p < 0.01]), even after adjusting for age, sex, body mass index, diabetes, and dyslipidemia (p < 0.01 for both adjusted models). The associations of BARD with anthropometric measures were significant only in the non-adjusted model. There was a positive association between both FLI and BARD and C-reactive protein. Our results point towards a positive association between waist-to-hip ratio and the risk of hepatic steatosis, and between pro-inflammatory markers and both hepatic steatosis and fibrosis.

Introduction The study area is located in the northeast of Iran (the Khorasan Razavi province) and 28 km northwest of Bardaskan city and in position of 57˚ 46΄ to 57˚ 52΄ latitude and 35˚ 21΄ to 35˚ 24΄ longitude. The study area is a part of Taknar zone. The Taknar geological-structural zone is situated in the north Central Iranian microcontinental and it is a part of Lut block (Fig.1). Taknar plutonic complex that is situated in the Taknar structural zone is located in the northern part of Iranian microcontinent. Materials and methods Chemical analysis of REE and minor elements of samples of the Bornaward diorites and gabbro’s took place in the ACME Lab. in Vancouver, Canada, by the ICP-MS method (Table. 1). For the Bornaward diorite dating by the U-Pb method, zircon grains of material remaining in the sieve, Bromoform were isolated from light minerals by cleaning and were isolated with a minimum size of 25 microns, and then studies took place in the Crohn's Laser Lab Arizona (Gehrels et al., 2008). Measurement of Rb, Sr, Sm and Nd isotopes and (143Nd/144Nd)i , (87Sr/86Sr)i ratios and ƐNd (T=552), ƐNd (T=0), ƐSr (T=552) and ƐSr (T=0) took place in radioisotope Laboratory, University of Aveiro in Portugal. Discussion Geology of study area The study area forms the central part of the Bornaward plutonic complex. This complex is a granitoid assemblage including granite, granodiorite, tonalite and granophyre.tscentral part has been formed by intermediate and basic intrusive rocks such as diorite, quartz diorite and gabbro units (Fig. 2). From the genetic point of view, the intermediate and mafic rocks of the Taknar plutonic complex does not have any relationship with granitoid rocks of this assemblage, and they are related to a similar magmatic phase but are separated from this granitoid assemblage. However, these mafic and intermediate units are older than granitic units at the rim of the complex that are called Bornaward granite. Petrography The main minerals in the diorite and quartz diorite rocks are plagioclase and hornblende and we can see biotite in the quartz dioritic rocks. Quartz exist as tiny grains and anhedral and in the matrix rock. The amount of Quartz in the quartz diorites is 5 to 20%. Plagioclases usually have normal zoning and are highly altered to sericite. Most of the plagioclases were saussuritized. Altered minerals resulted from plagioclase and hornblende are sericite, epidote, chlorite, zoisite and clinozoisite. The main minerals in the gabbro are pyroxene, hornblende, and fine grains plagioclase. Minor minerals in the rocks are apatite, magnetite and other opaque. The main texture of intermediate and mafic rocks in this assemblage is medium granular to coarse grain and especially in the intermediate rocks and gabbro rocks, we can see scattered poikilitic, intersertal, sub-ophitic and porphyroid texture. Geochemistry The area diorite and gabbro is located locate in Tholeiitic and Calc-alkaline series (Fig. 9). Shand index (Al2O3/(CaO+Na2O+K2O)) is obtained under 1.1, in Metaluminous field (Fig. 7) and I-type granite field (Chappell and White, 2001). Based on the TAS diagram (Middlemost, 1985), all the diorite and gabbro samples are located in diorite, gabbro-diorite and gabbro-norite groups (Fig. 6). The diorite and gabbro’s show enrichment LREE and low ascending pattern ((La/Yb)N =1.40-6.12 and LaN =12.26-75.81). U-Pb zircon geochronology Measurement of U-Th-Pb isotopes of the Bornaward diorite zircons of BKCh-03 sample (Table 2) show that its age is related to 551.96±4.32 Ma ago (Upper Precambrian (Neoproterozoic) (Ediacaran) (Fig. 14). Sr-Nd isotopes The (87Sr/86Sr)i and (143Nd/144Nd)i content of Bornaward diorite and gabbro rocks is located in the range of 0.7038 to 0.7135 and 0.51203 to 0.51214, respectively (Tables 3 and 4). It shows that the diorite and gabbro rocks can be affected by hydrothermal alteration because their (87Sr/86Sr)i is above (Fig. 16). The numeral amounts of ƐNd(T=552) of Bornaward diorite and gabbro are 2.0 to 4.0. Petrogenesis The Bornaward diorite and gabbro rocks show a widespread enriched pattern of Rb, U, K, Pb, La and Th elements than chondrite, while Ba, Ti, Ta, Sr and Nb elements show reduction as a result of fractional crystallization (Fig. 11). The rocks of this complex are formed at the continental margin and VAG environment (Fig. 18) which is related to the subduction of the oceanic crust that exists between the Iranian microcontinent and the Afghan Block. Results This assemblage with age of Late Neoproterozoic is the result of extensive magmatism in the northern part of the Iranian microcontinent due to Katangahi orogeny event. The similar magmatism in the northern part of the Iranian microcontinent is existing as Khaf-Kashmar-Bardeskan volcano-plutonic belt. Based on the geochemical investigations, the magmatism of these rocks has been tholeiitic and calk-alkaline and have formed the coexistent rocks with I-type granites. Alumina saturation index for intermediate and mafic rocks of Bornaward complex is metalumina. These are medium-K rocks and enriched in the LILE such as Rb, Pb, U and Th while depleted of the Nb, Ti, Ta, Sr and Ba. Therefore, it shows that these rocks have resulted from the mixing by the lower crust. The low (87Sr/86Sr)i Bornaward diorite and gabbro rocks and the numeral amounts of Ɛ0Nd(present) of these rocks from -0.2 to 4.0 show that production of such intrusive masses can be attributed to the source of upper mantle or contaminated lower continental crust. Environment of formation of the intermediate and basic rocks of the Bornaward plutonic complex is active continental margin and volcanic arc environment. The production of fraudulent goods remains widespread and economically damaging. The high value of the wine industry makes it particularly vulnerable, and a number of geochemical methods have been developed to ensure traceability and identification of origin. Here, strontium (Sr) isotope data on wines from five defined regions in Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain) show that the young volcanic geology imparts a clearly identifiable low 87Sr/86Sr signature (87Sr/86Sr above what is expected in the soils. Bentonite addition has not affected the 87Sr/86Sr signatures, with white wines at lower Sr concentrations than red wines in all regions. A number of natural contributions to the terroir are evaluated in relation to Tenerife’s unique combination of geology and geography. Atmospheric precipitation (rainfall) is likely a dominant influence on Sr isotope systematics in northern Denominación de Origen regions, and evaporation may play a role in buffering signatures in southern regions. Other natural additions of 87Sr are not precluded at a local scale, given the large range in climatic conditions of island terroir and known input of mineral dust from Africa. Despite natural explanations affecting the overall small shift observed, there are clear outliers with considerably higher 87Sr/86Sr and Sr concentration. This confirms the utility of Sr isotope systematics for oceanic-island viticulture and demonstrates the use of young volcanic soils for tracing natural inputs that may be masked in other regions.

Introduction The Bornaward area is located in the Northeastern Iran (in the Khorasan Razavi province) 28 km northwest of the city of Bardaskan at 57˚ 46΄ to 57˚ 52΄ N latitude and 35˚ 21΄ to 35˚ 24΄E longitude. The Taknar structural zone, situated in the North central Iranian micro continent, is part of the Lut block (Forster, 1978). The Taknar zone is an allochthonous block bounded by the Darouneh and Taknar major faults. Much of this zone consists of metarhyolite-rhyodacite volcanic rocks, and rhyolitic tuff with interlayers of sandstone and dolomite (Taknar Formation). Analytical Results ICP-MS analysis of REE and minor elements of samples of the Bornaward metarhyolites was carried out at the ACME Laboratory in Vancouver, Canada. U-Pb dating of the metarhyolites was performed on isolated zircons in Crohn's Laser Lab, in Arizona (Gehrels et al., 2008). Measurement of Rb, Sr, Sm and Nd isotopes and (143Nd/144Nd)i and (87Sr/86Sr)i ratios took place in the radioisotope laboratory of the University of Aveiro in Portugal. Petrography The volcanic rocks are porphyritic, commonly containing phenocrysts of orthoclase and rarely sanidine, quartz and intermediate plagioclase in a groundmass of fine-grained quartz and feldspar. An alteration has produced oriented needles of sericite and clay minerals, clusters of fine-grained green biotite and clots of epidote and chlorite. Geochemistry The compositions of the volcanic rocks are calc alkaline and high K- calc alkaline. The obtained Shand index (Al2O3/( CaO+Na2O+K2O) is above 1.1, in the peraluminous S-type granite field (Chappell and White, 2001). Plotted on the TAS diagram (Middlemost, 1994), all the metarhyolite-rhyodacite samples are located in the sub-alkaline field and the majority fall into the rhyolite group. The metarhyolite-rhyodacites show enrichment of LREE with a moderately ascending pattern ((La/Yb)N=2.51-10.11 and La=46.45-145.48). Europium shows a negative anomaly (Eu/Eu*=0.23-0.71). U-Pb zircon geochronology Measurement of U-Pb isotopes of the Bornaward metarhyolite zircons of sample BKCh-103, indicates an age of 552.23+4.73,-6.62 Ma (Upper Precambrian). Sr-Nd isotopes The Sr ratios of the metarhyolites (87Sr/86Sr) were found to fall in the range of 0.688949 to 0.723435 and the Nd ratios (143Nd/144Nd)i were in the range of 0.511701 to 0.511855. These values indicate that the metarhyolites of samples BKCh-12, BKCh-103 and BKCh-177 were affected by hydrothermal alteration since their (87Sr/86Sr)I ratios are high. The Sr ratios suggest that the more negative Nd anomaly and the more negative ɛNd(552) of the samples BKCh-12, BKCh-103 and BKCh-177 indicate that these lavas originated in an enriched upper mantle source and/or lower continental crust. In contrast, two recent examples (Xua et al., 2005) can be related to sialic continental crust with significant contamination. Petrogenesis The Bornaward metarhyolite- rhyodacites show an enriched pattern for Rb, Th, U, K, Pb, Nd and Y relative to the primitive mantle, while Ba, P, Ti, Sr, Zr and Nb show a reduction as a result of fractional crystallization. Based on isotopic correlations of207Pb/204Pb vs 206Pb/204Pb, the primitive source of the Bornaward metarhyolite- rhyodacites is the lower continental crust. This part of the continental crust is only slightly depleted in Pb. Consequently, it has a low 87Sr/86Sr ratio (Samples BKCh-138 and BKCh-198). In contrast, the samples of BKCh-12, BKCh-103 and BKCh-177 have high 87Sr/86Sr ratios that could be the result of significant contamination to parts of the continental crust with very high 87Sr/86Sr (Karimpour et al., 2011). Results and Conclusions The calc-alkaline compositions of samples BKCh-12, BKCh-103 and BKCh-177, the high K- calc alkaline of samples BKCh-138 and BKCh-198 of the Bornaward metarhyolites and the higher temperature overgrowth of plagioclase on lower temperature microcline phenocrysts can be a reason for entrance lavas with different generations. The distinct isotopic characteristics of the two groups of rhyolitic samples are the reasons for two different sources for the production of these lavas: 1) partial melting of an enriched mantle reservoir or lower continental crust, and 2) sialic continental crust with high contamination. With respect to the Bornaward metarhyolite- rhyodacites with (143Nd/144Nd)i ratios from 0.511701 to 0.511855, geochemical characteristics and the high volume of volcanic rocks in the area, their formation can be attributed to a continental rift environment. El proyecto de investigación "Historias en lo femenino: la influencia de las narrativas en la construcción de la identidad de educadoras en Portugal y en España" se desarrolló durante dos años con investigadores de la Escuela Superior de Educación Paula Frassinetti y la Universidad de Madrid. El grupo desarrolló una investigación cualitativa, de carácter biográfico, basada en historias de vida, después de entrevistar a 11 educadores / maestros portugueses y españoles. En este texto presentamos solo seis de estas historias, todas narradas por mujeres portuguesas. Este artículo cubre una parte del estudio y se centra en seis entrevistas sobre el papel de las mujeres como educadoras y narradoras. De este modo, el artículo se enfoca en las diferentes dimensiones de las mujeres, asumiéndose a sí mismas como narradoras, ya sea hablando de ellas mismas o de otra narradora. En este artículo presentamos el discurso de algunas de las mujeres entrevistadas que, al hablar de su relación con el tiempo de contar historias, rescatan aspectos importantes de su infancia. En este proceso, se reconstruyen en una memoria afectiva relacionada con las historias, los personajes, los sentimientos desencadenados después de experimentar cuando escuchan o leen una buena historia.

Temperature, humidity and precipitation have a strong influence on the generation of diseases in different crops, especially in vine. In recent years, advances in different disciplines have enabled the deployment of sensor nodes on agricultural plots. These sensors are characterised by a low cost and so the reliability of the data obtained from them can be compromised, as they are built from low-confidence components. In this research, two studies were carried out to determine the reliability of the data obtained by different SEnviro nodes installed in vineyards. Two networks of meteorological stations were used to carry out these studies, one official and the other professional. The first study was based on calculating the homogenisation of the data, which was performed using the Climatol tool. The second study proposed a similarity analysis using cross-correlation. The results showed that the low-cost node can be used to monitor climatic conditions in an agricultural area in the central zone of the province of Castelló (Spain) and to obtain reliable observations for use in previously published fungal disease models.

We report a 48-year-old female patient who presented to the emergency room with right eyelid edema, with 3 days of evolution. She had suffered minor trauma to this eye one week before. She reported episodes of right eyelid swelling of spontaneous resolution since the occurrence of a traumatic brain injury 5 years ago. Ophthalmological examination showed a soft and painless eyelid edema of the right eye. Brain computed tomography showed an area of bone discontinuity of the orbital roof with brain herniation and a CSF leak into the eyelid (blepharocele). Magnetic resonance confirmed the result of TC and revealed an area of frontal encephalomalacia. Ibuprofen (800 mg/day) was prescribed, with complete resolution within 20 days. She was evaluated by Neurosurgery with no indication of surgery due to the resolution of the edema and absence of symptoms. Blepharocele is a rare entity that should be considered in the differential diagnosis of unilateral eyelid edema. It can be secondary to an orbital fracture or congenital lesion.

Schwann cells are highly plastic cells that dedifferentiate to a progenitor-like state following injury. However, deregulation of this plasticity, may be involved in the formation of neurofibromas, mixed-cell tumors of Schwann cell (SC) origin that arise upon loss of NF1. Here, we show that adult myelinating SCs (mSCs) are refractory to Nf1 loss. However, in the context of injury, Nf1-deficient cells display opposing behaviors along the wounded nerve; distal to the injury, Nf1−/− mSCs redifferentiate normally, whereas at the wound site Nf1−/− mSCs give rise to neurofibromas in both Nf1+/+ and Nf1+/− backgrounds. Tracing experiments showed that distinct cell types within the tumor derive from Nf1-deficient SCs. This model of neurofibroma formation demonstrates that neurofibromas can originate from adult SCs and that the nerve environment can switch from tumor suppressive to tumor promoting at a site of injury. These findings have implications for both the characterization and treatment of neurofibromas.

INTRODUÇÃO: O hiperparatireoidismo secundário (HPT2) é uma complicação comum e precoce em pacientes com doença renal crônica (DRC). Estudos têm sugerido que os altos níveis de paratormônio (PTH) podem exercer efeitos deletérios no estado nutricional de pacientes com DRC. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi comparar o estado nutricional de pacientes com DRC em diálise peritoneal contínua (DPC) com e sem HPT2. OBJETIVO: O objetivo deste estudo é comparar o estado nutricional de pacientes com DRC em diálise peritoneal contínua (DPC) com e sem HPTS. MÉTODOS: Foram avaliados 74 pacientes, entre adultos e idosos, divididos em dois grupos, de acordo com os níveis de PTH. No grupo 1 (n = 18) os níveis de PTH eram maiores do que 300 pg/mL e, no grupo 2, menores ou iguais a 300 pg/mL. O estado nutricional dos pacientes foi avaliado através da antropometria, exames bioquímicos e avaliação subjetiva global (ASG). O consumo alimentar foi avaliado através do registro alimentar de 3 dias. Foram coletados também dados clínicos, como cálcio e fósforo séricos, e a presença de inflamação foi avaliada através da dosagem de proteína C reativa ultrassensível (PCR US). RESULTADOS: A média de idade da população estudada foi de 54,97 ± 17,06 anos, com predominância de pacientes adultos (58,1%) e do sexo feminino (56,8%). O tempo de DPC expresso em mediana foi de 17 meses (7,75-33). Através da ASG, demonstrou-se prevalência de 36,5% de desnutridos na população. Na análise de diferença entre os grupos, em relação à antropometria, indicadores bioquímicos e ASG, bem como ingestão alimentar, não foram evidenciadas diferenças entre os grupos estudados. CONCLUSÃO: Não houve diferenças no estado nutricional e na ingestão alimentar entre os pacientes com e sem HPT2.

SETTING UP AND EXPLORING GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION INFRASTRUCTURES IN EAST TIMOR. This paper presents a report on the production and usage of Geographic Information applied in a co-operation project with Timor Leste. The project was funded by the Portuguese Government, developed by technical teams of the Technical University of Lisbon and coordinated by the group GERTiL. The work in the project resorted extensively to geographical information. The article describes the global implementation strategy, namely the definition of a co-ordinate system, the installation of a GPS permanent base-station, field surveys, remote sensing and data gathering. Different projects made use of the built infrastructure, namely a strategic development plan, the “school mapping” project, the border demarcation and other smaller projects.

The sediments of the Galician Interior Basin are influenced by the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) and by their proximity to the Western Iberia continental landmass , and thus provide an adequate archive to study the peculiarities of the last glacial‐interglacial dynamics and the transition into present day conditions. The aim of this study has been to analyse the sedimentary expression of climatic processes and forcings derived from the relation between the last North Atlantic glacial cycle and the local regional components -including abrupt climate changes and local events- since the end of the last glacial period in this area. We have attempted to establish the rates and magnitudes of change of this system to understand its climate dynamics, processes and feedbacks, and hence its role on a local to sub‐regional scale from a palaeoclimatic proxies perspective. The inference of these climatic mechanisms encrypted in the deep-sea sedimentary record needs to constrain the spatial and temporal scales of the sedimentary processes involved, in particular the identification of source areas, pathways and transport, storage times and hydrodynamic conditions. In order to achieve these goals we have used a twofold approach; an initial effort to constrain the current sedimentary conditions to their associated local hydrography conditions by means of a mooring, which will be used to later infer the palaeoenvironmental conditions from sediment cores. The location of the mooring and the 5 coring locations has been based on the acquisition of new geophysical data: a precise 20 x 20 m bathymetry covering an area of 9860 km2 and 690 km of high-resolution seismic profiles distributed in 10 transects that allow to investigate the main sedimentary units in the region. The mooring comprised 2 sediment traps located at 500 and 1400 m below the sea surface. These depths are under the influence of the Eastern North Atlantic Central Water (ENACW) and Mediterranean Water (MW). The sediment traps also target sediments from the shelf and the upper slope. Sediments were collected monthly for a 9 month period, whilst hydrographic conditions such as current speed, salinity, oxygen and turbidity were continuously recorded in associated instruments at the same depths. Finally, a multidisciplinary study combining resolution scans, including geochemistry (ITRAX), physical properties (GEOTEK) and enviromagnetic properties (2G cryogenic magnetometer), has been constrained using a very robust geochronology framework. Further analyses comprised grain size distributions, S͞S, SEM, XRD, stable and high-precision radioactive isotopes. The area consists mostly of generally autochthonous hemipelagic and terrigenous muds and sandy to silty muds with high clay content, showing abundant bioturbation and early diagenesis. Allochthonous material of different provenances (characterized by 143Nd/144Nd and 87Sr/ 86Sr isotopic ratios) occurs interbedded within the hemipelagic sediments associated to Heinrich Stadials HS1 to HS6. The sediments also show significant changes in the vigour of bottom-currents (based on the S͞S proxy) both within and between the HS. The combination of these sedimentological, geochemical and geophysical data has provided a new insight into the role of current strength, circulation and sediment provenance changes in the area, and allowed to establish across vs. along margin transport balances in the sedimentary record of the Galician Internal basin over the last 60 Ky.
